Launch of the SIGI 2024 SIGI Regional Report for Southeast Asia: Time to care (CSW68 Side Event).
Watch the Launch of the SIGI 2024 SIGI Regional Report for Southeast Asia: Time to care (CSW68 Side Event)!
Care systems in Southeast Asia rely heavily on women's unpaid work. But demographic, educational, and economic shifts are increasing the demand for paid care. What does this mean for women in the region - and what challenges lie ahead? This event will explore the care economy's transformative power to accelerate women's economic empowerment, while strengthening Southeast Asia's resilience to external shocks.
Hosted by Korea, the OECD Development Centre is organising a CSW68 Side-event to launch the SIGI 2024 SIGI Regional Report for Southeast Asia: "Time to Care". The side-event aims to delve into the root causes of gender inequality in Southeast Asia and explore potential solutions, particularly in formalising the care sector.
The SIGI 2024 SIGI Regional Report for Southeast Asia: Time to Care underscores that discrimination remains most pronounced within the family. Traditional gender roles continue to confine women to caregiving responsibilities, while men are expected to assume the roles of family providers and decision-makers.

The event will feature a panel discussion where speakers will share insights on how gender-transformative policies and innovative programmes in the care sector can challenge established gender norms, promote women's rights, foster gender equality, and drive sustainable development. The event will also explore pathways for collective action, involving policy makers, lawmakers, grassroots organisations, philanthropy, and the wider development community. Together, these stakeholders can accelerate progress toward realising Sustainable Development Goal 5 and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in the Southeast Asian region.

Things I've learned from getting covid for the first time in 2023
I wear an N95 in public spaces and I've managed to dodge it for a long time, but I finally got covid for the first time (to my knowledge) in mid-late November 2023. It was a weird experience especially because I feel like it used to be something everyone was talking about and sharing info on, so getting it for the first time now (when people generally seem averse to talking about covid) I found I needed to seek out a lot of info because I wasn't sure what to do. I put so much effort into prevention, I knew less about what to do when you have it. I'm experiencing a rebound right now so I'm currently isolating. So, I'm making a post in the hopes that if you get covid (it's pretty goddamn hard to avoid right now) this info will be helpful for you. It's a couple things I already knew and several things I learned. One part of it is based on my experience in Minnesota but some other states may have similar programs.
--------
The World Health Organization states you should isolate for 10 days from first having symptoms plus 3 days after the end of symptoms.
--------
At the time of my writing this post, in Minnesota, we have a test to treat program where you can call, report the result of your rapid test (no photo necessary) and be prescribed paxlovid over the phone to pick up from your pharmacy or have delivered to you. It is free and you do not need to have insurance. I found it by googling "Minnesota Test to Treat Covid"
--------
Paxlovid decreases the risk of hospitalization and death, but it's also been shown to decrease the risk of Long Covid. Long Covid can occur even from mild or asymptomatic infections.
--------
Covid rebound commonly occurs 2-8 days after apparent recovery. While many people associate Paxlovid with covid rebound, researchers say there is no strong evidence that Paxlovid causes covid rebound, and rebounds occur in infections that were not treated with Paxlovid as well. I knew rebounds could happen but did not know it could take 8 days. I had mine on day 7 and was completely surprised by it.
--------
If you start experiencing new symptoms or test positive again, the CDC states that you should start your isolation period again at day zero. Covid rebound is still contagious. Personally I'd suggest wearing a high quality respirator around folks for an additional 8-9 days after you start to test negative in case of a rebound.
--------
Positive results on a rapid test can be very faint, but even a very faint line is positive result. Make sure to look at your rapid test result under strong lighting. Also, false negatives are not uncommon. If you have symptoms but test negative taking multiple tests and trying different brands if you have them are not bad ideas. My ihealth tests picked up my covid, my binax now tests did not.
--------
EDIT: I'd highly suggest spending time with friends online if you can, I previously had a link to the NAMI warmline directory in this post but I've since been informed that NAMI is very much funded by pharmaceutical companies and lobbies for policies that take autonomy away from disabled folks, so I've taken that off of here! Sorry, I had no idea, the People's CDC listed them as a resource so I just assumed they were legit! Feel free to reply/reblog this with other warmlines/support resources if you know of them! And please reblog this version!
--------
I know that there is so much we can't control as individuals right now, and that's frightening. All we can do is try our best to reduce harm and to care for each other. I hope this info will be able to help folks.

On one hand I’m like “how did we as a society fuck up so hard that being around small children in regular public shared spaces, not age-restricted businesses or organizations etc, is like a point of Discourse?”
but on the other I’m kinda like. idk. I watched, for several years, lots of people tell us we were Bad People for being willing, in theory, to pay more money for a flight with a 14+ age limit. or expecting you to take your screaming baby outside if you’re at an event in an enclosed indoor space. Or even privately complaining about a crying baby on a plane when you don’t say or do anything antagonistic to the parents in response. Just anything other than unbridled joy about being around a little kid is an indication that you have rot deep in your soul. So 🫠

so many words are flushed down the rhetorical toilet of ‘ao3 is a uniquely terrible platform whose lack of content moderation is an endemic moral failure’ without ever stopping to realize that under capitalism it is flatly impossible to run a moderately large website and moderate the content on it effectively--and that attempts to do so run on the PTSD of abused workers, often in the global south--and that if you actually want a website of any scale that can moderate any type of content, you need to start seriously reimagining how the web is structured economically

In June the place I worked out steadily lost all business to the point that by July I was applying to restaurants and all of them were telling me it was slow season too. So I finally got a job and they told me August is their slow season. Oh okay. A month later It still hasn't picked up so I have to get my availability changed and they're like oh yeah it's slow season. It's been a slow season since June you can just say it we're in a recession.

afa;ldf;lakdflk;asdf urgh sorry i've been MIA i unexpectedly got super busy with the grant and my grand rounds and having to pick up shifts for people with emergencies/illnesses/moving PLUS my 'graduation' is tomorrow so i'm all over the place AHHHHH
#... AND fellowship number 2 starts in literally 12 days WHY DONT I HAVE MY SCHEDULE YET#i really REALLY wanted to finish the path to paradise by end of june but honestly i dont think that's happening#the most batshit thing i did on monday is cover for a shift at hospital A from 8am-6pm then cover a shift at hospital B from 8pm to 7am.#and they were both INSANELY busy#the first is just a consult shift so it wasn't too bad#but the second is my icu community shift and GOD#this person coded at 2am and i probably didn't leave her side until at least 5 am#its just INSANE. INSANE that i didn't get called before she coded#like i think the reason all my codes at this hospital get ROSC is because these people would NEVER have coded at the academic one#and this is FAR from the first time this has happened#you. you let this woman. sit on the floor. with BPs in the 70s. for HOW long? you left this OTHER woman completely obtunded on a bipap?!?!?#for DAYS?!?!??!?! WITHOUT TALKING TO THE ICU?! AND ONLY CALLED WHEN THEY GOT HYPOTENSIVE?!#this is horrifying. like legitimately. must be nice to practice shit medicine and when your patient crashes just wipe your hands and let#the icu doc deal with the fallout#i realize i signed up for this#but it always feels crappy when i can't tell families 'yeah no the reason your loved one is dying is probably because they were mismanaged'#and i'm gonna keep it real with you chief. its the racism too#hospital A is in the rich part of the city#hospital B is close to the border with mexico#less densely populated/less desirable areas hire less desirable doctors (all staff really)#its often like 30% people who care about the community#and 70% of people who can't get jobs elsewhere#and the economic disparity even between branches of the SAME HOSPITAL SYSTEM is staggering#healthcare in america is a fucking joke#also. like.#in rich person hospital A monday#got a consult for this guy who is a 'medical mystery'#seen at a bunch of different hospitals by a lot of different doctors#...and i'm 90% sure the way he got his lung disease is by crushing up pain and/or anxiety meds and injecting them#but see the reason no one suspects this. is because he's a wealthy white man
