“Christmas movie” isn’t just a genre to me. It’s like a best friend. I wish all movies were more like this actually
#suspension of disbelief#is so dead as an important aspect of storytelling#& I WISH it was as prevalent in all genres as it is in Christmas movies#genuinely unironically a HUGE part of why I freaking love Christmas movies#is that people just go with shit#like thank you oh my god#it’s so fun#so refreshing honestly#hot frosty#movie tag#Christmas movie watch a thon 2024

I've been on a small reading binge the last month, anyone have book recommendations? Any genre is fine, but preferably something a bit lighthearted, or easy/fun reads!
edit: oooo thank you guys!! I'll be checking out the ones I have library access to!
#it doesnt even have to be good. just entertaining! a couple books i read recently were so terrible i just couldnt look away LOL#Kind of burned out on dense super long serious high fantasy epics so that's the only thing I won't really consider right now#fantasy in general is fine tho#will even consider horror as long its more whimsical or nebulous and not just a gore suspense fest. a little burned out on this genre too#i havent been drawing but i have been reading. i guess thats something#text

I wish more people would weigh out the demand of how "realistic" something is regarding horror media thats supposed to be around a certain time era or within certain limitations with the fact that if it WERE 100% accurate to what it's trying to represent, it'd probably be lame as hell.
#I've seen this complaint a lot with N64 replicated horror lately since that's been a popular... genre I guess?#'the console isn't capable of that/the devs wouldn't do that realistically because it would run bad'#Yes but consider: the game you are currently playing would lose so much value as a HORROR game if it took all of that away#Like I'm gonna keep it a stack with you. If you are playing a horror game of any kind you're already breaking the laws of reality#have some fun with it instead of nitpicking the fact that it isn't console accurate because duh#I do not think any developer goes into a console replica game with the intent to make it accurate.#They go in with the intent to make it an experience and should be judged on that merit#And sometimes I feel they do it good (Shipwrecked) or bad (Crow64 I hate your game so much)#TLDR: devs don't typically make replica horror games with the intent to be accurate they do it with the intent to be a horror game#edit: if there's a suspension of disbelief with fnaf all the time with walking non possessed sentient animatronics#I don't know why it becomes an issue when the N64 starts playing videos

Victorian sensation novels my beloved.
They're like Gothic fiction with a sense of humor.
Mysteries, but less methodical.
They're over-the-top drama with with memorable characters dealing with the craziest stuff you've ever seen.
They don't make them like that anymore.
#lady audley's secret by mary elizabeth braddon#is my first non-wilkie-collins sensation novel#and it's making it clear that i love this genre not just the author#the prose flows so much better than other victorian stuff#the pacing is propulsive#and i'm learning that guessing the plot twist does not have to destroy a mystery#because i figured out a twist right away#and i'm on the edge of my seat going 'when are they gonna figure it out???'#and it works because the characters aren't failing to put it together because they're stupid#but because we have more info than they do#the suspense is driving me nuts but it's a fun kind of insanity

*sigh* this is arguably going to be slightly cursed so don't go blaming me if you fail to avert your eyes at this my dire warning. still here? ok let's go. do you guys think kremy could light a post-coital cigarette off of gideon's... let's err on the side of discretion here and call it happy trail. like if he were down there anyway and really craving the first smoke of the day in celebration of a job well done. do you think gideon would mind. probably not right. just impatiently waiting for a cooldown smooch like 'c'mon up here already, the fuck are you still doin' down th -- oh ok, fine. just don't get any ash in my pubes this time alright it gets itchy'
#coalecroux#once upon a witchlight#kremy lecroux#gideon coal#legends of avantris#I feel like kremy's mouth... situation opens a lot of questions in this manner#there's the most obvious but also. how would kissing work for him. for that matter how does he smoke. can he purse his lips#I guess we'll just have to assume lizardfolk have slightly more flexible mouths than their real world equivalents#considering that they are also capable of producing human speech lol#(the real answer is of course 'dude willing suspension of disbelief is the entry ticket price to the fantasy genre since 4ever'#but where's the fun in that!)

If you haven’t seen much cable tv in a few years you might not know this but the editing on most of those shows is so absolutely crazy now. God it sucks so bad. And like some of those shows do appear to be genuinely well written and made by people passionate about what they’re doing!! But the pacing and storytelling and character beats all seem so strange.
And it’s clearly bc they’re supposed to be made for an audience who’s expected not to be paying full attention/have zero attention span. So everything comes at you way too fast and both vulnerable/revealing character moments and larger plot developments seem to come out of nowhere w very little buildup. Honestly it makes me wonder how many of these shows are having genuine effort put into them but are then totally chopped up in the edit anyway.
Like as an example I really enjoyed Brilliant Minds, but if you compare the editing in that show to what they were doing over on say, House MD? It’s night and day, and it feels even more apparent bc they’re in the same genre of medical investigation drama, albeit w different central themes. Like I loved the writing and it felt like a lot of sincerity and passion went in to making it; but the editing is so break-neck and disjointed it can be hard to enjoy those positives.
(And the flipside of this is prestige television shows being pumped out that don’t have the same time constraints and so can take their time meandering and don’t have that super fast edit, but a lot of the plot and character development are still just like. Playacting at storytelling. Just vague gestures in the guise of plot or character moments. And still so many tropes.)
#I mean there are exceptions ofc!#and genre can definitely also be a determining factor#like abbott elementary doesn’t have this problem#but ofc mockumentary style shows tend to have slower and more character driven pacing anyway#plus it’s kind of breakout show w a lot of originality in its own right#also I would say there are shows like 911 where this style actually tends to work actually pretty well for the genre niche they’re occupyin#but that’s ofc bc 911 is an action-suspense-melodrama

i saw someone say Laws of Attraction is technically a lakorn and im like huh.. i could either google whats the difference between lakorn & y-series (bls) as we know it OR i could just ask you so here i am ✨✨ ((im asking cause the only lakorn i know is To Sir With love and i just thought its cause of the many episodes + not really centred ~ so like would Manner of Death be considered bl or lakorn??? idk anything anymore))
Sure it has some lakorn aspects, but if you want to experience TRUE lakorn def watch their first drama together: To Sir, With Love. It has SPARKLE DEATH GLITTER
yes you read that right
SPARKLE DEATH GLITTER
If you're familiar with telenovelas from say the 80-90s, lakorns have more in common with those than anything else I can think of. Like truly camp over the top soap operas.
They are GREAT.
If you like that kinda thing.
I would say Laws is a little less lakorn and more gay romantic suspense, because lakorns tend to be more more ensemble pieces with lots of focus on parents, villains, siblings, staff, and other sides. Again, think really soapy soap operas.
I highly recommend watching To Sir With Love. It will give you a real lakorn experience but still very gay. And, as of right now, it's the only one of its kind.
Genre is often a matter of "I know it when I see it" and challenging to define. I will sometimes try using a negative.
For example I have an author friend who defines sci-fi as: if you remove the sci-fi elements the whole story would fall apart. In other words, to be called sci fi, the book's central premise and narrative backbone must rely upon its science fiction elements.
You can apply the same to romance: if you remove the love story, the whole narrative falls apart.
Lakorn, I'm not entirely sure what that backbone is (I haven't watch enough of them, because so far they not queer enough except for Laws). But I wouldn't necessarily define Laws of Attraction as lakorn first. Although it has lakorn aspects. I wouldn't necessarily define Laws of Attraction as BL first either. Although it also has BL aspects. Which is why, like Manner of Death, I settled on "gay romantic suspense."
One might make a case for Only Friends or even Playboyy as lakorn, but neither was soapy or campy enough. IMHO they have more in common with something like The L Word or Queer as Folk.
#laws of attraction#to sir with love#lakorn#thai bl#thai lakorn#defining genre#manner of death#thai drama#gay romantic suspense

look, i'm not saying that the show missed the perfect opportunity to make "my brother's keeper" and "doctor's disorders" a psychological suspense and a psychological horror, respectfully, but. i'm also NOT not saying that.
#look spectra just lends herself perfectly to a psychological suspense/horror/thriller genre okay#she knows how to blend into the background until you don't even know that she's here#her words and intentions are so perfectly disguised that you won't notice the wounds they inflict until you already bleeding out#she's sweet and courteous and accomodating and nice#so why would you even suspect her#just. the way she manipulates her words and environment and even people's perceptions of her/themselves is so scary#wish there was more of her tbh#i could write a 1k+ word essay about her and not run out of things to say#literally want to study her under a microscope like a bug#spectra#danny phantom

Setting myself on fire as we speak btw
Like at least Shawn and Abigail formally broke up. but like COME ON, not even a scene with him and Juliet at the end wtf????
Anyway now I’m wondering if there’s a third episode in this Yin/Yang series, seeing as we still don’t know who Mr. Yin is, and apparently Shawn and Yang met when he was young???
Goddamn how do Psych’s few really suspenseful episodes (both of the Yin/Yang episodes, Shawn Takes A Shot in the Dark, Tuesday the 17th to a lesser extent) always get me so bad?? I was so anxious the entire time, I resorted to literally chewing on my thumb lmao
#I never watch suspense/thriller movies in general bc I don’t like them#so maybe it’s just bc themed episodes of a tv show (in which I already like the characters so I’m willing to watch them)#are the only way I ever see that genre lol#psych#shawn spencer#abigail lytar#juliet o'hara#shules#captainswan618 talks too much

for anyone wondering if in a violent nature is basically just friday the 13th with the serial numbers filed off: you’re not wrong but watch it anyway
#in a violent nature#idk there’s something quite special about it as an addition to the slasher genre#there are so many modern slashers that wanna be More than the classics#more clever more self-aware etc#and this one is different in a lateral way. if that makes sense#by shifting the perspective to the killer for the vast majority of the movie you get a new kind of suspense#it feels like jason and yet there’s a richer character here because his story is his own unencumbered by the producer’s need to impress#also sorry but it reminds me a lot of my friday the 13th remake where alice & jason are (in a word) friends#there’s a lot of similar themes; especially the viciousness of nature vs the greed of man#but that’s for another day & i’m not looking to get back into horrordom anytime soon

Night School (Terror Eyes, 1981)
"There's been another killing."
"Mmm."
"That doesn't seem to surprise you."
"When man kills for the sake of killing, there's no reason why he should stop."
"Do you really believe that man can go out and kill, just like that?"
"Why not? You see, animals kill when they're hungry or when they're threatened. But man is the only animal who destroys his own kind for the sheer pleasure of it."
#night school#terror eyes#1981#video nasty#slasher film#american cinema#ken hughes#ruth avergon#leonard mann#rachel ward#drew snyder#joseph r. sicari#nick cairis#karen macdonald#annette miller#bill mccann#margo skinner#elizabeth barnitz#holly hardman#brad fiedel#an intermittently stylish but tonally mismatched slasher from perhaps the busiest year for big screen splatter icons. this was almost bound#to get lost in the onslaught of horror classics that 81 saw‚ but it isn't helped by the weird way it melds its sleazy giallo inspirations#with a tv movie style romantic drama theme. a bizarre final project for director Hughes‚ who'd come up doing quota quickies in the UK and#had no real horror experience; he was a last minute replacement for Alfred Sole‚ who walked off the project. Ward was more or less#an unknown newcomer at this point but in a couple of years she'd be a screen icons with The Thorn Birds. there's some nicely executed#scenes of suspense here‚ and a delightful playfulness at times (there's a 'where will the severed head be' tease in one scene which goes on#so long it almost becomes absurd) but the plotting is old hat and the big twists very predictable. not without its fun moments#but simultaneously this was never going to be a game changer in a genre which was already beginning to suffer from over exposure

Whenever a Bridgerton character (specially a married one!!) has absolutely no idea how sex and pregnancies work, EVERY SINGLE TIME there are such scenes I need to pause the episode until I'm able to concentrate again on the plot instead of having most of my brainpower focused on daydreaming a scenario where I shake the 4th wall until they let me in and I get to teach some DESPERATELY NEEDED sex ed to everyone
#bridgerton#yes i know this is a feature of the genre and not a bug but sometimes i just cant#and then there's the suspension of disbelief aka me pretending that everyone somehow washes their hands/mouths before and/or afterwards#nym's posts
