Setting myself on fire as we speak btw
Like at least Shawn and Abigail formally broke up. but like COME ON, not even a scene with him and Juliet at the end wtf????
Anyway now I’m wondering if there’s a third episode in this Yin/Yang series, seeing as we still don’t know who Mr. Yin is, and apparently Shawn and Yang met when he was young???
Goddamn how do Psych’s few really suspenseful episodes (both of the Yin/Yang episodes, Shawn Takes A Shot in the Dark, Tuesday the 17th to a lesser extent) always get me so bad?? I was so anxious the entire time, I resorted to literally chewing on my thumb lmao
#I never watch suspense/thriller movies in general bc I don’t like them#so maybe it’s just bc themed episodes of a tv show (in which I already like the characters so I’m willing to watch them)#are the only way I ever see that genre lol#psych#shawn spencer#abigail lytar#juliet o'hara#shules#captainswan618 talks too much

translation of the YT video “Adèle HAENEL, Noémie MERLANT, Céline SCIAMMA : « Un portrait de femmes flamboyant »”
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jie2x8bA9-g&lc=z22ww1aadozeifo3eacdp43a2xkn0h2wg34uemcfnjtw03c010c.1579617877414170
journalist (j) : we are glad to meet you today.... "portrait of a lady in fire", Adèle Haenel, Noémie Merlant and Céline Sciamma for this movie which had the price of the script at the Cannes festival, so we meet today at the festival of Angoulême. Beautiful adventure for a film, when we do a movie we dream of all of this, don't we ?
Céline (C) : in any case, we mostly dream that it meets its public and all the things that bring it to the public is good to take so it gives us momentum and confidence.
j : we think about public when we do a movie like this, yes, we think "how can we surprise them, how can we question them ?"..
C : of course, me, I'm absolutely obsessed by this, thinking about the public like an actif subject of the movie, how he will dwell the movie itself, mostly when we do a love story : I want people to also think to their story...
j : to recognize themselves
C : yes
j : even if the story happen in the 18th century
C : the story takes place absolutely in the 18th century.. It is a perspective effect that allows you to let go a little
j : ok.. we will now watch the trailer and then Adèle will make the pitch
Adèle (A) : 😁
--> trailer
j : Adèle Haenel
A : so it is me who does the pitch
j : yes but *mimes this movement at 1:46 *
A : yes I'll do it shortly. It is the story of Marianne who is a painter, who comes on a island to do the portray of a young woman Héloïse who will be married. It is their story, the story of this meeting when the portray is done and the meeting between these two women that takes place over a very short time
Noémie (N) : she has to paint her in secret !
A : yes, thank you Noémie .... it's a lot of suspens, it is a thriller
j : yes it's a thriller ! So now everyone who is listening to us know it's a thriller, with suspens
C : All love stories are thrillers
A : Yes it's true
j : And effectively btw, the sensation is present, this feeling of love and you have great pleasure in making us wait
C : a slow burning film, effectively, it is the slow chronic, step by step, of a rising desire. But I think that it's good frustrations and this is why we go to the cinema too, it's good to wait, to hope.
j : yes yes and we hope.. Noémie, and that's a love story anyway, a beautiful love story! Talk about your character, her relations she can nourish trough... at the bottom, there is a background : it's painting
N : Yes, this is a love story and this is also a story of contributors, of women, of artist, and how Marianne
will situate herself as a painter, how she will find her painting the truth the sincerity and it's thanks to this encounter with Héloïse that she can ask herself the right questions and break out of a framework of rules, conventions and let her go.
j : yes there is a form of a liberation trough art, through letting go
A : yep I'll continue what Noémie said, when she said : "asking the right questions", that is, all the questions that belongs to us and this is the beginning of an artist's work, it is understanding that we had made hers questions that were not ours, or the issues that were not ours or even issues that oppress us, and the romantic encounter allows to get out of these stereotypical questions which are in fact a very narrow path, and to approach the infinite field of art possibilities.
j : yes bc on the bottom there is creation, the mystery of creation and love is also a form of creation.
C : yes there is the creation in the love dialogue, there is a creative dialogue but that is also an intellectual dialogue and the movie takes part in telling that, telling how falling in love is not only a principe of very beautiful persons who meet in an elevator and immediately fall in love, it's admiration, it's debate, it's criticism, it's analysis, it's how we think together and how we are affected by thinking together and the movie tells about that.
j : though the painter and her model, there is this relation that is very rich and strong
A : It's effectively what we are talking about, when Céline talks about exchange, it can seem very light but it's very deep, that is, how in the story of art, very often there were one brain that tough for everybody and finally this way it's a seed of oppression. We can find it everywhere whereas collaboration, it's like this that we create masterpiece I think, and the movie is more than that, we can invente societies like this, that is, this seed is present in art but also present in politic and... that's it. sorry I got carried away
(everybody is laughing)
j : no no it's true , she is right
(A : yes of course)
j : it's not the painter and her model, it's both of them are necessary to each other and it's this fusion that we were talking about
C : of course.. the term of muse is associated to a form of passivity, it's women who would be fetishized, passives and inspirational only by the pure grace of there presence and it masks the reality, the cooperators, the brains in the room, and often, women were erased of art history while they were painters, musicians, novelists etc. and even the statue of muse has been reduced to this idea of purely inspiring and quiet while they contributed to the oeuvre.
j : yes, and there is also this liberation because at the beginning, art is supposed to imprison because it's about making a portray of weeding that she didn't choose, she doesn't want, and it's art that will allow her to free herself
A : In fact, the movie is obviously political, because it is in a form of suspension, as it happens, the creation of the portrait is an opportunity for artistic collaboration, a relationship with oneself that would be very close to the surface, very excited, very forward-looking. However, it is not proposed as a long-term solution because the long-term solution is still political, there the film says "yes, indeed, we are leaving a system in which we put the young woman in the convent, we created her to be a beautiful object, we take her out while we paint her, this beautiful object, and then we remarry her and she is again an object, and not a person in itself." And this, this asks a political though on it, not just artistic.
j : so it's also a politic movie
C : Adèle says it very well but also in this dimension there, they collaborate on what will separate them : it is also a tension of romantic tragedy which collaborates from the fictional of the cinema in general and romanticism, that is, collaborate on what will separate you, this is a amorous tension which, I think, can be moving.
j : yeah, I would like you to say something about the picture, the cinematographic picture looks like a moving painting
C : yes the movie is kind of obsessed with the idea of beauty, btw when we say that the movie evokes the painting, the plans are like tables, it's because the cinema has a link with beauty as painting has : the cinema, like painting, it's a story of frame, a story of characters, of color, of light, and it's true that the movie wanted to talk about beauty, being beautiful, and also being new, and I think that the novelty has a link with beauty too.
j : yes.. Noémie you have been happy of course to be in this movie, to see all of that
A : the work with Noémie was very interesting because it's true that... I mean.. Noémie has this fire inside her, that is really particular, playing with her... turning to Noémie Idk how you have lived this... it was very exciting
j : yes Noémie you felt that too, is it true ?
N : huuummm
A : we approached the scenes a bit like somewhat sporty fights almost
j : laugh it was a sporty fight
N : it was a sporty fight.. what was interesting was that we invented our relationship with Adèle as actresses and at the same time our relationship between Héloïse and Marianne we invented it as we filmed, and what is funny is that Adèle she dare to suggest, send a ball and you never know how she will send it, how to receive it, and all these look games... what will she do ? She is fascinating. when we play with Adèle, there is a fascination that takes place and I tried to use it the most for Marianne looking Héloïse, and what also fed me a lot in the film is that the play of gaze was not only between Adèle and me, it was also with Céline : there was really a real triangle .. me, I looked a lot at Céline like she look at us, and I tried to get inspired by her gaze particularly intense and also very kind.
j : thank you
A : thank you a lot
j : thank you for sending balls, she is a ball sender
N : yeah yes!
j : thank you Adèle, thank you Céline, thanks to all of you! Thank you Noémie ..and go watch "portrait of a lady in fire"
Voilà ! If you don't understand something or want a translation of another video (related to this movie or Adèle Haenel) tell me !

MEDIA INFLUENCES FOR MY WRITING (IN GENERAL)
I was tagged by Yah Yah of @fluoresensitive (thank you!). Since I’m not actively working on a single wip I chose some early and major influences for my work overall rather than just one project. These medias span from childhood to very recently!
As you can see I am very much influenced by the science fiction and crime genres. Some of these works I was introduced to through school, others through chance or recommendation, and they all left lasting impression. The following WIPs take the strongest influence from these medias: The Puppeteer Plague (sci-fi thriller), Of Rust & Redwood Lungs (space opera? drama), Define Vitality (post apoc drama), Hyacinth Stalks (crime thriller).
TAGGING: @bebewrites - @blossomov - @skeletongrrl - @glittcrpeach - @queenie-dragon - @halohidings - & anyone who wants to tbh
This got long so I’ll put all of this under a cut!
The Magic Treehouse series by Mary Pope Osborne. These were a childhood favourite of mine, a mix of science and fantasy and adventure that made learning something empowering for children.
The Pyx by John Buell. This pulp fiction has been lurking on my family’s bookshelves forever, since it’s one of my grandfather’s novels. I need to reread it to appreciate it properly because it’s been like 10 years.
The Chrysalids by John Wyndham. I read this in grade 9 and fell in love with its subtle science fiction elements, its post-nuclear apocalyptic setting and the children who find themselves with tele-empathic abilities that make them a target of their hyper religious communities...
The Host. Probably read this midway through high school after the Twilight craze had died down, but have reread it about 4 times and it makes me cry every time. Say what we will about Smeyer and silly hetero love triangles but she did some really cool worldbuilding with this, and those ideas have followed me ever since. I probably think about this book every time I shower, don’t ask me why.
The Stand (expanded and uncut edition). My dad has a few favourites, and among them are this book and Dune. He convinced me to read it when we were stuck in a cottage for two weeks when I was 14. I got the name Perion from this book, which I gave to one of my most treasured original characters. I also take inspiration from some of the plague and post apocalypse elements but little else.
Level 26: Dark Origins by Anthony E. Zuiker. I watched way too many crime shows as a teenager, and though I think the CSI shows were not so bad, this novel written by the executive producer was real bad. I absolutely shouldn’t have read this at 15 years old it was so fucked up, but it was also the first book to immediately hook me in in the prologue and held me in a tight grip of suspense the whole way through. I’ve never been more fucked up by a book before. The sequel is pretty good too. It is actually media based, and has codes every few chapters that you can plug into the official website where there are short clips shot with real actors that provide additional subplot to the book.
Fringe (2008-2013). This was my favourite show which I was so invested in I recall my sibling coming in to console me during a particularly intense season premiere bc I was sobbing so hard. What they did with some of the science fiction in this blew my mind, and some elements have followed me into my work now.
Obscura by Joe Hart. I read this last year, and I’ve never really finished a book and wholeheartedly said that it deserved to have a TV adaptation. It’s narrative is suspenseful the sci-fi elements are compelling and the stakes are intriguing. It’s set in space, the main character is a mother, and the twist is fucking delicious.
Bloodchild by Octavia E. Butler. I read this for my sci-fi themed English class last year and was riveted. I haven’t read anything like it before. The whole class reacted strongly to it. I loved the alien species and I love the dynamics between them and the humans, who have become refugees on another planet, and a valuable resource too. Fucked up but in a very compelling way.
The Southern Reach Trilogy by Jeff Vandermeer. I started the first book at 9 pm before trying to go to bed, and got through the first 100 pages, I had to get up and go talk to by sibling Andy because I was so thoroughly skeeved out by the world Vandermeer had created. I put a lot of trust in this story, because the perspectives shift in the following books and I really wanted more from the Biologist, but ultimately it remains one of my favourite series and a huge influence for my science fiction work.
Alien (1979) & Aliens (1986). The first “scary” movie I was introduced to as a kid. The monster/alien concept stuck with me and I rewatch the first two films (we ignore every subsequent film). Puppeteer Plague pays homage to the Xenomorphs, and in another WIP (Mare Levest 40) I named many of the crew after Alien Franchise characters.
iRobot (2004). Another action/sci-fi I was introduced to as a kid. It still startles me even though I know the story and have watched it many time. The robots were fucking cool. Spooner’s prosthetics are a major influence in Of Rust & Redwood Lungs (which is a Mars Settlement political drama).
The Expanse (show and books). I only recently got into this series, but it’s become a big inspiration for me for my own space opera wip. I have taken influence from The Martian, The Space Between Us, Interstellar and many other space-based medias for this piece, but The Expanse was the one to really dig in deep with the worldbuilding and I have a lot of respect for it especially because of its diversity of characters, but also representations of various sexualities.
Runners Up: Panic at Rock Island for its plague themes, The Mentalist and Lie to Me for their unique approaches to crime, Terra Nova for its unique worldbuilding and for also making me fuckin sob during the finale (also shout out to the livejournal fanfic community I was in for that fandom, lmao, I gave Lt. Reilly the first name Laura and someone put it on the wiki), and Bioshock, The Last of Us, and Horizon Zero Dawn for worldbuilding elements.
I legit didn’t realise I had so many sci-fi influences, damn. You’re a trooper if you read this far.

1. I love the idea of characters wanting something so badly it wrecks them... and I do drama. I just brought those things together.
2. A day, literally just today lol.
3. There’s a lot more metaphorical references and I’ve decided everyone thirsts over Abraxas bc damn
4. I still don’t have a title, so the plot came first.
5. Books like All For The Game, If We Were Villains, The Secret History, etc. It’s dark academia.
6. A stand-alone, for once! Usually I only write series.
7. The genres of my WIP are thriller/suspense and dark academia.
8. Their general vibe. I knew I wanted an angry character, an unreliable narrator, an egocentric character, etc. The rest came later.
9. ABRAXAS IS SO FUN TO WRITE!! He’s just been through so much and lives and breathes theatre and it’s so interesting writing such a damaged flawed character.
10. I know what will happen at the end. Whether or not I stick to it is yet to be seen.
11. Idk what this means.
12. Probably the start. When I get into the action and stuff it’ll be great!
13. Not yet no, but I cut a whole character.
14. I’m excited to write Abraxas’ interactions with his mother, and also his downfall. I’m being vague to avoid spoilers ahaha.
15. “You know, it’s so wonderful to watch someone you know well destroy themselves and crumble to nothing in front of your eyes,” Abraxas commented, staring into the fire with a contemplative look on his face.
16. SPOILER: Abraxas is jealous of how good Jeté is and because she is so talented, he kills her, making it look like a suicide, because he can’t have anybody be better than him, nobody.
17. Rehearsals with Abraxas never went brilliantly — my back twinged in remembrance from being shoved into the corner of a wall by the other storming backstage — but these particular ones had went worse than usual.
18. MAIN CHARACTERS
MAX. A sixteen year old boy obsessed with trying to find his place in a world that doesn’t seem to have one for him. A loyal and true friend to the end, Max is the narrator of this piece, and a rather unreliable one due to his romanticisation of both Abraxas, the antagonist, and his other friends too. His hair is ginger and he has brown eyes, and is of an average height. His arc is one of coming of age, of losing the innocence and friends he makes, and the realisation that sometimes it is necessary for one to forge their own place in the world when one is not available.
ABRAXAS knows he will die young, and is determined to be remember through two mediums: the theatre he creates, and the suffering he inflicts. His mother is the director in Atticus High; and as soon as he could say the word ‘script’ Abraxas has been destined for the stage. Inheriting his mother’s cruelty and ability to manipulate, Abraxas is the youngest student ever admitted to Atticus, despite being one of the most talented actors there. He knows how his story will end: in blood, at the edge of a blade, or the barrel of a gun, and so is determined to prove to his mother his use — and to the world his talent. His arc is of power and corruption, the childhood desire to be loved, and his eventual downfall to his own pride and flaws.
JETÉ is Abraxas’ ex and biggest rival. They met when they were thirteen and fourteen (her being a year older) in a movie and the fans haven’t shut up about their brief romance since. She is a romantic at heart, but doesn’t act that way because she believes her softness will get her killed (or worse: out of a job) in the cut throat acting industry. She is the only one who can stand up against Abraxas and get away with it, however, even then, she is also the one on who he takes anger out the most. Jeté claims to have a heart made of ice and a desire for power like Abraxas that cannot be tamed, but her heart is soft and her soul is sweet, and she cannot stand against the fire of Abraxas’ destructive personality for much longer alone. Her arc results in showing that good people do die, and also helps to show how cruel Abraxas really is, and how far down the road to hell he is.
LEO is the clown out of all of them, but hides secrets he really doesn’t want any of them to find out (the only one who knows he is trans is Abraxas. Because Abraxas always knows) underneath his jokes and tricks. Fun loving and the one who tries to keep them all in good spirits, he is classed as the weakest out of all of them due to his emotions running so rampant, and Abraxas takes a lot of his frustration over rehearsals out on Leo. Despite this, Leo tries his best to keep looking forward to the day he will finally be out of Abraxas’ control and in the real world. He dreams of not acting, but stand up comedy, though is careful not to let anyone else know this. He is the glue that holds the team together, and for that reason, he has to be strong. His arc consists of finding yourself, discovering you can’t be strong forever, standing up for what you believe in, and following dreams even if they’re hard.
TALIA is one angry girl, and it shows. Not content to let Abraxas order her around but not courageous enough to simply leave his ranks (she knows all too well her body would turn up in a river in an ‘accident’ a few weeks later if she tried), she is the most rebellious of his instructions, though she is talented at theatre and so he doesn’t usually take too much out on her. This tends to make the others angry that she can get away so much, but also makes her somebody they can turn to rant to about Abraxas: she’s the last person that would tell anyone. She’s the fire to match Abraxas’, but it becomes painfully clear that matching fire with fire will only cause more harm. Her arc is about knowing when to back down, bravery, pride, control and loss of it, and confronting situations you cannot run from any longer.
