“Epilogue,” North Shore Music Theatre, 2014. Will Ray as Jean Valjean, Susan Moniz or Daniella Danni as Fantine, Siri Howard as Cosette, Blake Stadnik as Marius.
A lovely finale. Will’s Valjean is warm and tender, while Fantine (whose identity the uploader unfortunately didn’t know) sings with a rich, caressing, motherly tone, and the sweet tones of Blake’s Marius and Siri’s Cosette beautifully round out the scene. The fact that we hear Cosette sobbing softly throughout Valjean’s last moments only enhances the scene’s poignancy: based on all the clips I’ve heard so far, this production was much freer than most in allowing ad-libs and extra-musical sounds from its performers, all to good effect.
This production seems to take its cue from the movie in omitting Éponine’s harmony with Fantine and Valjean. Fantine sings “Take my hand, I’ll lead you to salvation...” by herself and it sounds like “To love another person...” is just her and Valjean. I understand the logic behind this (“Why would Éponine’s spirit come to meet Valjean when he dies? They didn’t even know each other.”) but I personally wouldn’t call it an improvement. I can accept that Éponine mainly appears in this scene for the audience’s sake, not for Valjean’s, and I miss her voice when her part is cut.
All the same, this is a beautiful performance.

Saw Fun Home last weekend. Beautifully crafted show.
Non traditional opening of the show=nice. Love the line, “my dad and I were exactly alike..my dad and I were nothing alike.” Alison has some great lines in the show!
“Everything is balanced and serene. Like chaos never happens if it’s never seen.” Great lyrics and describes the Bechdel family so well. The song,Come to the Fun Home! Those kids are having so much fun! Changing my Major is just as exuberant and joyful as everyone says. Abby Corrigan is great as Medium Alison. And boy, she does belt at the end there. Maps is such a good song, “I can draw a circle, you lived your life inside.” So good, Lisa Kron and Jeanine Tesori are very deserving of that best score Tony.
I LOVE RAINCOAT OF LOVE! Okay, of course I love it because it’s by far the most happiest part of the show, although it is an illusion, which of course could make it the saddest part. But, it’s such a happy song and Robert Hager (Roy) has a great voice! And I loved how it was to block out her parents fighting because I think we all have that feeling sometimes. Clueless in New York was such a great scene. I loved the dark lighting, and Pony Girl was such a beautiful song.
RING OF KEYS. Wow, that song is magical. And pretty powerful. Such a moving, eye opening moment for people in the audience. And how Bruce ignores Small Alison the whole time and when she does look at him, he hides behind the newspaper.
Days and Days, very sad song, but so beautiful and eloquently sung by Susan Moniz. And DON’T GET ME STARTED on Telephone Wire. So many emotions in that scene and song. “At the light, at the light, at the light.” This moment needs to happen between Alison and her dad. And the cut off of the “this can’t be our last- .”  Bruce: “Well that was fun.” And this moment doesn’t happen and that is why it is so heartbreaking when she says, “that was our last night.” We’ve all that moment of regretting not saying something in that one moment, and that’s why that scene carries a huge emotional punch. Ugh. And props to Kate Shindle (Alison) for staying on stage the entire time and reacting to everything that happens because that’s pretty amazing when you know you’re not the center of the action. And like when Medium Alison asks Bruce if he knew what he was doing when he gave her Colette and Alison literally leans in waiting for the answer. She still has so many unanswered questions in her life and that is why she is “stuck”.
EDGES OF THE WORLD. More ugh. Robert Petkoff was superb as Bruce. The parts I find saddest in that song is “but when the sun shines on the parlor wall, I see how beautiful this house could be.” I find it sad because it’s like he knows life can be okay and there are times when he is okay living. At least that’s how I see it. And then the lyric “WHY AM I STANDING HERE?” Because it’s like he doesn’t even know why he’s there, why is he killing himself?. And just the build up of that line is so powerful. Flying Away finale, omg, so beautiful. The three Alisons’ voices together are so pretty. “I can see all, of Pennsylvania.” And that last line is the most fantastic way to end the show. “Caption: Every so often there was a rare moment of perfect balance when I soared above him.” Just beautiful and very captivating show. If you have any questions and comments about the show, please tell me! It was so beautiful and if you have the chance, go see it!

Biden Transition Goes to Work
LOS ANGELES (OnlineColumnist.com), Nov. 7, 2020.--Calling the election, Associated Press and all major networks declared 77-year-old former Vice President Joe Biden president-elect, with only 74-year-old President Donald Trump and his diehard faithful not caught up that the 2020 presidential election is over.  But Covdi-19 or not, Trump predicted correctly that universal mail-in ballots would do him in, not necessarily for the reasons he thinks but for getting the biggest election turnout in U.S. history.  Whether there was some fraud or not, the overwhelmingly large turnout brought millions of new voters into the fold, beating Trump and the Republican Party with its historic registration disadvantage.  Let there be no mistake, the sheer volume of Democrat, independent and crossover votes did Trump in.  When you consider how competitive the race, it’s a testament to how fiercely Trump battled in the campaign’s final days.
Now Biden’s transition team gets to work, as they have for some time, picking a Cabinet to run his Democrat government.  “We’re not waiting to get the work done and to start the process,” Biden said today in Wilmington, De.  Most of Biden’s glamorous jobs like Secretary of State, Defense Secretary and Attorney General are up for grabs with some old an new faces popping up. Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) was named as a possible Treasury Secretary, despite possible opposition from Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) should he stay in power.  With two Georgia GOP Senators, David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler facing runoffs, it’s possible that Biden won’t have to pick a moderate or consensus candidates.  But Biden has made the hallmark of his 2020 campaign to bring the country together, showings signs that he’ll resist pressure from his Party’s left wing.
So given Biden’s pledge to reach out to both sides, Warren is an unlikely pick for Treasury Secretary.  Looking far more likely is 58-year-old Lael Brainard, currently serving the Federal Reserve Board of Governors.  Brainard was an undersecretary of the Treasury under former President Barack Obama.  When it comes Secretary of State, 55-year-old former Obama National Security Adviser Susan Rice would be a top pick, except for her baggage with unmasking Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn when they were wiretapping Trump’s campaign.  If McConnell remains Senate Majority Leader, Biden could have some problems with Rice.  On the other hand, 58-year-old long-time Biden foreign policy adviser Tony Blinken could be a moderate alterative or candidate for National Security Adviser. While Sen. Chris Coons (R-Md.) is mentioned, he’s needed in the Senate, though his replacement would be Democrat.
Frontrunner for Defense Secretary is Michele Flournoy, who worked in the Defense Department for 74-year-old former President Bill Clinton and for Obama.  Serving as a adviser to former Defense Secretaries Robert Gates and Leon Panetta.  Flourney would be the first woman Defense Secretary in U.S. history and is the odds on favorite, with Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Il.) and Sen. Jack Reed (D-R.I. distant seconds.  When it comes to Attorney General, Sen. Doug Jones (D-Al.), defeated Nov. 3 by Tommy Tuberville (R-Al.), is considered a frontrunner but could be replaced by 59-year-old  Democratic National Committee Chairman and former Obama Secretary of Labor Tom Perez, putting a Latino in Biden’s Cabinet.  Favored for Secretary of Homeland Security, 60-year-old former Obama deputy secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas.
Rounding out Biden’s Cabinet picks, Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham (D-N.M.) is considered the favorite for Secretary of Health and Human Services, with former Obama Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy a distant second.  Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, 49, looks like the favorite for Transportation Secretary.  Former 64-year-old Hewlett Packard [HP] and Ebay CEO Meg Whitman, a former Republican candidate for Calif. governor, is considered a favorite for Commerce Secretary.  Former Obama Energy Secretary 75-year-old Ernest Moniz might get his old job back but 51-year-old former Obama Deputy Secretary of Energy and Georgia Institute of Technology Prof. Elizabeth Sherwood-Randall would be a better pick.  New Mexico Sen. 72-year-old Tom Udall looks like the favorite for Interior Secretary   Former 65-year-old Sen. Heidi Heitcamp (D-N.D.) looks like a shoe-in for Agricultural Secretary.
California’s Secretary of Labor and Workplace Julie Su looks like the favorite for Labor Secretary, with Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt. ) less likely because Bernie’s better served pushing hard for his socialist agenda in the U.S. Senate.  Replacing Dr. Ben Carson at Housing and Urban Development looks like 58-year-old former Jacksonville Mayor Alvin Brown.  Taking the baton from Betsy Devos, 65-year-old National Education Association [NEA] President Lily Ekelsen-Garcia looks like the favorite for Education Secretary, with Stanford Education Prof. Lind Darling-Hammond a distant second.  Former 38-year-old South Bend Mayor and Democrat Presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg has been named for Veterans Affairs Secretary but not certain.  Rep. Jimmy Gomez (D-Calif.), 45, looks like a favorite for U.S. Trade Representative with 71-year-old former Obama Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman favored for U.N. Ambassador.

POTO U.S. Tour Review (12/07/19)
Cast: Derrick Davis (The Phantom), Emma Grimsley (Christine), Jordan Craig (Raoul), Trista Moldovan (Carlotta), David Benoit (Firmin), Rob Lindley (Andre), Susan Moniz (Madame Giry), Phumzile Sojola (Piangi), SarahGrace Mariani (Meg Giry)
Okay, I’m about to say something controversial... I actually really loved the restaged tour.
Tumblr media
I know. Like I said, I know this is an unpopular opinion. Let me explain myself.
I can see why some would dislike this tour. In terms of costumes, sets, and blocking, it can stray pretty far from the original. But, for me at least, most of these changes really worked.
I loved how the sets rotated, folded in on themselves, and split apart to reveal a new set behind. The Stairs of Doom that Phantom and Christine go down during the title song? So cool. The split-stage to show both the Il Muto ballet and Phantom strangling Buquet? So cool.
It didn’t hurt that the actors were all so phenomenal. Derrick Davis was such an elegant, and yet clearly unhinged Phantom. Emma Grimsley played a strong and feisty Christine, who very nicely toed the line of showing sympathy and compassion for the Phantom while still being clearly in love with Raoul and wanting to be with him. Jordan Craig surprised me. He was so cute! He could come off a little standoff-ish, especially in act 1, but it was also so obvious how much this Raoul loved and wanted to protect Christine.
So now, some little details that I noticed and really, really loved:
Christine’s effervescent joy in TOM- big grins and lots of twirling
Raoul’s first very cute moment: correcting himself during his part of TOM- “Bravo! Oh, brava!”
Christine clearly hesitated to grab the Phantom’s hand to get in the boat during the title song- she seemed to sense this was probably a bad idea, but eventually decided to just go for it anyways
Raoul was PISSED during Managers I- he was clearly irritated and even made Andre take his coat off of him when he first came into the office
After the second “Serafimo, away with this pretense,” Christine touched her head and then just shrugged. It was very cute!
Christine’s almost-jump off the rooftop was VERY dark, and Christine staggered back very slowly, looking like she was in pain. And she was crying, which just broke my heart. Raoul kneeling down and crawling over to comfort her was very sweet.
After Christine left the rooftop, Raoul grinned and chased after her, so excited and happy.
I missed the staircase and iconic choreography in Masquerade, but I also really liked the new choreography. Emma was clearly having a lot of fun dancing.
Wishing was STUNNING. Emma’s might be my new favorite.
Before Christine pulled the hood off the Phantom at the end of PONR, she looked up at Raoul as if to warn him something was about to happen.
A fun audience reaction after Christine pulled the hood off: the man behind me, who had clearly never seen the show before, was shocked that it was the Phantom and not Piangi: “Ohoho!” Despite the drama happening on stage, this made me smile.
When Phantom started singing AIAOY, Christine pretty vehemently shook her head no. She was not into it.
Another fun audience reaction. After Christine said “you deceived me,” there was complete quiet in the theater, except for a woman in the audience who emphatically said “yep.” Like, you’re damn right he did. Call him out.
Derrick’s “you try my patience, make your choice” was SO SIMILAR to Brad Little’s that we were just talking about a couple of days ago! A very slow, growling “you try my patience,” a long pause, and then a loud “make your choice!”
Christine kissed the ring before setting it down!
And a final thing. And this shook me to the core. I cried. So, after Christine and Raoul leave the lair the second time, they sing a few lines from AIAOY. Christine sang her line, and THEN. THEN. Phantom looked up at the sound of her voice, in a way that very much reminded me of Hugh Panaro, and started to SING THE NEXT LINE. Then he heard Raoul begin to sing the next line and he stopped himself, so heartbroken. I was devastated.

Fun Home Tour Review
General thoughts:
Kate Shindle (Big Al): I went in thinking I wouldn’t like her because she didn’t want to cut her hair, but I was impressed. Beautiful voice, looked realistically butch, her reaction after the end of “Edges of the World” was a gut punch. She seemed more of a wallflower Alison, it was kind of easy to forget if she was there or not. One thing I noticed that she did different than Beth was that the line “How did it feel to step in front of a truck, Dad?” was way less emphasized, less abrasive. I only really noticed that because my dad hates that line and refused to come see the show with me because of that.
Robert Petkoff (Bruce): I think I remember earlier in the run people were saying he was “Robert Petkoff as Michael Cerveris as Bruce Bechdel”, but he definitely was different here. I think part of it comes from the fact that he’s a different body type than Michael, idk just got a more masculine energy from him. Sorry, Kaylee, he said “parlor” weird.
Abby Corrigan (Medium Al): pure baby bird version of Alison. Wasn’t so much awkward as just completely innocent (but yeah, she was awkward too). Very high pitched, sweet voice. Loved her.
Susan Moniz (Helen): A poor man’s Judy Kuhn except she kept belting!!! She was okay.
Victoria Janicki (Joan): Erin and I couldn’t decide if she was British, something in her first line made Erin think she was British. We ultimately deduced that she was not. She was literally a goddess, so funny, very different from Roberta (who I fucking adored). Idk, less abrasive, less political. Not sure if I’m making sense here. She was also so beautiful.
Robert Hager (Roy/Pete/etc) This actor isn’t really the star of the show. Didn’t have a lot of opinions except I think he “disappeared” into the different characters more than Joel, so I’m sure people were surprised one guy played all of them. I liked him.
I’m not going to review the children besides that I liked them.
Specific things:
The Boston Opera House was too big for this show. We were lucky that we got limited view orchestra seats that weren’t really limited view at all (the only obstructions were that sometimes we heard people before we saw them and when Bobby Jeremy enters during Raincoat of Love, I couldn’t see Medium Al flanking him on one side.
So many butches in this audience! Never seen that many in one place. Also, there were a sizeable amount of Deaf people in the audience, and we had three sign language interpreters. One was a butch woman! I’d love to see Deaf West Fun Home.
