“Fun Home” at the Curran
Tumblr media
There is no more perfect show to christen San Francisco’s newly-renovated Curran Theatre than Fun Home, the Jeanine Tesori (music) and Lisa Kron (book and lyrics) musical based on Alison Bechdel’s graphic novel memoir of growing up in a Pennsylvania funeral home and coming out as lesbian only to discover that her father had been living as a closeted gay man. It’s perfect not only because the show itself is simultaneously powerfully moving and delightfully entertaining, but because the themes of Fun Home – self-discovery, the toxicity of the closet, and the joy of embracing your nature to become your best self – are reflected in the stunning rebirth Carole Shorenstein Hays has brought to the Curran. As the cast sings in an early number, “Welcome to our house on Maple Avenue – see how we polish and we shine. We rearrange and realign.”
What Shorenstein Hays has accomplished with the restoration of the Curran goes far beyond polishing and shining. There is far more here than fresh paint, reupholstered seats, expanded bathrooms, new bars, and a 2500-hour polish job on the giant Phoenix Day chandelier – though all that (and more) is part of it. Shorenstein Hays has done more than shine the jewel of San Francisco’s theatre district, she has created a new center for the arts that honors and highlights the very best the City has to offer.
Shorenstein Hays the impressaria has an aesthetic eye that is unsurpassed among theatrical producers, and an artistic instinct that pervades every corner of the Curran – and beyond, reaching into the community at large. As Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom said at last night’s opening gala, San Francisco can be described as “49 square miles surrounded by reality,” and Shorenstein Hays expresses so much of the wonder and magic of the City by the Bay. The art on the walls of the balcony level bar was created by patients at Benioff Children’s Hospital, the downstairs mural is by San Francisco’s Aaron de la Cruz, and the Riordan High School marching band provided a brassy welcome to last night’s patrons. The programs for the Curran will be curated by McSweeney’s, the San Francisco-based publishing company established by local author Dave Eggers. Every aspect of the experience at the Curran bears the stamp of Carole Shorenstein Hays and her love and respect for the amazing city of San Francisco.
Like the Curran, Fun Home celebrates the artist in us all, the sensitive soul who seeks to present a vision that is both an authentic representation of one’s self, and an expression of a highly-personalized point of view but one that garners acceptance and perhaps even approval from a larger community.
In Fun Home, Bechdel reveals her genesis as both an artist and a lesbian at three different stages of her life: as a young girl of 10, as a freshman at Oberlin College, and as an adult artist looking back at her life as she creates the work that will become the graphic novel of her life – and the musical we see laid out before us.
All three actors portraying Alison are marvelous. As Small Alison, Alessandra Baldacchino has a voice that belies her tiny frame, belting the show’s signature tune, Ring of Keys, with emotion and authority. She also perfectly inhabits the aggressive charm of a self-assured youth; the sense of wanting to free herself from the thumb of her controlling father, and live up to her own expectations is almost palpable. Abby Corrigan’s Medium Alison is appropriately jittery as the college freshman taking the first steps of real independence, and Kate Shindle’s performance as grown-up Alison lets us see the anger and impatience of the young girl, the anxiety and desire to please of adolescent Alison, in the midst of her portrayal of an Alison comfortable in her own skin yet still questioning and seeking to grow as a person and an artist. Shindle’s comic timing is also spot-on, generating laughs from pausing just the right amount or stepping on another actor’s line at exactly the right moment. Perhaps more important, these three actors create a unity and balance between the three faces of Alison that was lacking when I saw the show on Broadway in 2015.
Robert Petkoff (as Bruce, Alison’s closeted father) gives a performance that is every bit as explosive as Michael Cerveris’s Tony-winning turn. If anything, he’s even a little better, as his beautifully-rounded tenor exhibited a tenderness of tone that Cerveris lacked.
Director Sam Gold has done a stellar job with this production, and it’s easy to see why he also won the Tony for his work on the Broadway run of Fun Home. The story moves backward and forward through time, and action between different times is often performed simultaneously, but he never loses the thread that links the different scenes, and we are never confused by any aspect of the action. On the contrary, his staging reveals aspects of the characters and their story that would be lost in a more linear telling.
Every aspect of this production is top-notch: David Zinn’s sets are appropriately chaotic and precisely ordered (at just the right moments), and there is a reveal of the Bechdel parlor mid-way through the show that received a well-deserved round of applause. It’s all lovingly illuminated by Ben Stanton’s gorgeous, dynamic lighting design.
Though there is deep tragedy at the heart of Fun Home, there is also tremendous humor and love in the face of heartache and loss. Just as the three Bechdel children (not only Alison, but also her brothers John [Lennon Nate Hammond] and Christian [Pierson Salvador]) make a playground of a mortuary, book writer Kron has found myriad opportunities for humor and gentleness amid the harsh backdrop of a household headed by an authoritarian father with significant anger issues.
There is one more connection between Fun Home and the new Curran – both deserved to be experienced, for both will fill your heart with emotion, and give you hope for humanity as you witness what people truly committed to art and community can accomplish.
Fun Home runs through February 19 at the Curran Theatre, 445 Geary Street, San Francisco. Performances are Tuesdays-Saturdays at 8:00pm, with matinees at 2:00pm Wednesdays and Sundays. Tickets range from $49-$185, and can be purchased by visiting sfcurran.com, calling 415-358-1220, or visiting the box office between 10:00am and 6:00pm Monday-Friday.
