it feels sort of silly being surrounded by all this layclaire stuff while in the throes of an obsession with a completely different set of layton characters. i acknowledge the tenderness and tragedy of it all but i'm just not in the headspace to engage with it in any meaningful way lol

wrote like ... 1k of good solid fic today ... feeling VERY ACCOMPLISHED. my new solution to a convo in-fic that feels like it's dragging is to actually make the characters have two conversations at once. this takes twelve million hours to figure out how to do in the text for me BUT does solve my problem of "WOW THIS CHAPTER IS LIKE. STRAIGHT UP BORING?!" lol

also i've put in (HEE HEE) a very pointed technical shift at one key point of chapter 3 which satisfies my need to underscore the important thing happening. and ALSO all the dialogue is sooo much snappier and faster and "realistic" and less "here is plot exposition. here is my clear and direct feelings" thank god omfg

ANYWAY! suffice to say. it is possible that. there will be a new chapter on time on uhh whichever weekend day i post on. sunday (???) i think. and also like .... it might actually be good up to my personal standards

You get a lot of questions via tumblr. Are those ever a burden to you? Do you feel a lot of pressure to answer?

Yeah I currently have 104 unanswered asks on Tumblr to give you an idea of like, me not being able to get to them all.

Some of it is how AO3 has changed my ability to respond to comments has eaten into my ability to respond to asks. Some of it is that I get a lot of social anxiety around responding to certain kinds of asks. (I like those asks, so I'm not going to say what they are in case people stop sending them lmao).

Most of it is that I realised a few years ago that as fun as responding to asks is, that's not actually my job and because it takes time and often research to respond to some of them, it makes it harder for me to write the stories that folks enjoy in the first place, and that one is probably the biggest reason I no longer pressure myself to answer in the same way.

Some of the asks I reply to, especially the ones that require research that a reader could themselves do in the story (I get asked a few things that are actually often already answered in the story, and I answer them the same way a reader sometimes could: by using control + F with keywords in the story), can take 30-45 minutes to compose. Writing advice asks take a lot longer. Research asks can take a long time too.

I can write a chapter in 2 hours, though I'll be tired afterwards, so I can't do that 4 times a day (especially with editing etc.), but you can sort of see how very quickly, if I get fatigued from writing for 2 hours, sometimes I'm going to have to choose between asks, replying to comments, editing, or writing a chapter.

I love the asks I get, they're not a burden at all, but I do make choices re: prioritising what I have time for, and what I can spend spoons on. I've made myself very sick from overworking, so now I get to asks when I can, and queue them up (if you see an 'administrator gwyn wants this in the queue' then I've actually responded to a bunch at once and they'll come out slowly over time so I don't spam people in 10 minutes and then vanish for months lmao).

I still really enjoy them though, and I'm really lucky to get them. :D

Since there's already 5 million reblogs on your Kab post, I'll just put my thoughts here: 'id love to see you make an essay of red that would be awesome i think' Funnily enough I kind of suck at analyzing people. And I also can't write above 400 words or I die. I do like ranting about Red though, and while I'd probably like to make an essay of him, I think the fandom sidelines him Hard to an extent it makes me feel like I'm going fucking crazy. I would make it for the 2 people that care about Red's character as much as I do. He's such a weird boy! 'and honestly bpd-coded red makes sense to me at least from what i know of him and id certainly believe it coming from you' To quote my work-in-progress doc he has very unstable relationships (especially his problem with rushing in on relationships on the idea of a person rather than who they actually are), has an extreme need for love and acceptance, and has a lot of abandonment issues. I also think that some of his actions can be read as him splitting on people (*especially* the Red-Kab altercation, The Mice divorce was extremely BPD coded for me). I think there's also other symptoms he displays like doubt about the future and feeling mistreated or victimized often but I think those are just the ones in broader strokes. The people want a queer man with many disorders and he delivers

the most "legit" criticism of Steven Universe i've seen is that it excuses abusive behavior in the name of the "greater good" with multiple storylines - obviously the main plot with the Diamonds, but also stuff with Lapis and other characters

i need a refresh on this series, so i might be fuzzy on details.

but if i recall correctly, Lapis and Jasper's storyline was a nuanced portrayal of toxic relationships where neither person was a clear-cut abuser or victim, they were both.

i don't believe anyone was OK with this, i think there was an episode where Steven tried to save Lapis but she refused. later when Malachite separated, Lapis admitted that even though she said she trapped Jasper to keep everyone else safe, she enjoyed taking out her anger on Jasper. i thought it was interesting that, after being fused for so long, she even admits that she misses that dynamic. which isn't unheard of in real life relationships, where the toxicity becomes familiar, and that familiarity feels normal because their sense of self has been so warped.

i don't think that was celebrated as a good thing, and actually, rewatching the scene- Lapis rejects forming Malachite again, she ends the cycle of abuse and spells out clearly that it was unhealthy and brought out the worst in both of them. i thought that portrayal of toxic relationships was surprisingly nuanced for a children's show- Lapis isn't perfect, but neither are all relationships and people.

I personally think Sugar would have done the metaphor of 'fusions as relationships' a huge disservice if she didn't portray ways in which they go wrong, in addition to the ways in which they go right. i don't think the toxicity was excused, as it's pretty clear Steven didn't want Lapis to be unsafe, and that Lapis takes responsibility for her part in Malachite.
