Tuesday, October 10: Suppressive Fire, "No Man's Land"
Lemmy always insisted that Motӧrhead was a rock and roll band, nothing more or less, but the group’s inherent scuzziness ensured that the bulk of their influence would shine through in similarly greasy, grimy and misanthropic metal acts. And so while Suppressive Fire’s most direct antecedents were extreme thrashers like Kreator, Celtic Frost and Toxic Holocaust, “No Man’s Land” simply couldn’t exist had not Lemmy, Fast Eddie and Philthy Phil (alongside Würzel, Phil Campbell and Mikkey, of course) bulldozed the original path. This was gross and antisocial, with guttural vocals and a yearning desire to do nothing more than just kick some ass, and it certainly did that, belching and bulldozing its way and leaving a distinct stench on the way out.

Vaggie: "I don't think this is a good idea."
Charlie: "But you think all my ideas are good ideas?"
Vaggie: "I don't think me thinking your idea is a good idea is good idea in this case, babe."
Charlie: "Well that sounds like you're second guessing yourself... But I KNOW you wouldn't believe in me if I didn't have really really GOOD ideas! I trust your judgment enough for both of us, Vaggie~"
Vaggie: "Bad idea."
Charlie: "Here- We- GOOOOO!!!!"
-one idea later-
Charlie: "I have a new idea."
Vaggie: "Charlie, I love you, but we only just put out the fire."
Charlie: "My new idea is that you get a girlfriend veto vote for every idea I have. As a safety feature."
Vaggie: "I'm vetoing that idea." (blasts fire extinguisher)
Charlie: "Why would you veto my best idea yet. Do you WANT more spontaneous and completely avoidable fires in your life???"
Vaggie: "Why not. Using these things is kinda fun." (blasts fire extinguisher again) "Watch out at eight O'clock- your tail's setting the carpet on fire."
Charlie: "Shoot." (sigh) "Foam me?"
Vaggie: (blasts her demon gf with the fire extinguisher)
Charlie: "Ooooh it TICKLES! Oh oh hey! This IS kinda fun!!!"
[please do not shoot your non-demon girlfriend with a fire extinguisher- Charlie Morningstar, who is part seraphim, some form of immortal, and close to inscrutable, is an outlier and shouldn't be counted. She's also slightly odd and not a reliable indicator of what your average human or demon would find enjoyable. Thank you for helping create a world where I felt it smart to add this note to the end of a nonsense joke. Cheers!]

Fire suppression p.1 & p.2: “Flame Retardant” & “Building Potential” Inspired by the PEM's ‘Our Time on Earth’ exhibit
I was gladly surprised to see the exhibit’s various optimistic installations, especially the building materials of the future. As a forestry student I am beginning to understand our relationship to our forests differently. In the US, forest policy which aimed to suppress wildfires has contributed to a century-long build up of fuel that would otherwise have been cleared by controlled burns or small spontaneous ground fires. Indigenous peoples shaped the forests of the Americas to require these controlled burns. More and more I realize that indigenous knowledge and collaboration is a necessary part of the stewardship of future. A concept which is present at large at the museum but also specifically within Our Time on Earth. Getting a ‘sustainable’ amount of lumber from our forest still disregards the health and purpose of these trees to a diverse and complex ecosystem. It is essential that we diversify our building material, to include carbon-negative things like mycelium! Natural resources that are close by, and at hand in our local environment, which doesn’t require chopping down a tree 3000 miles away and transporting it to the US. We need local resources whose collective cultivation lead to a sense of community and collaboration. A better future!
My thanks to lane.m.artin for collaborating with me for p.2!

Fire Suppression Exam: Inspired by @sydcarmyfan
Fire: In romance ‘fire’ is commonly used to describe love; the ignition of a flame is the act of falling in love alternatively the extinguishing of a flame is the act of falling out of love. A fiery love is one in which is filled with intense passion and desire, it engulfs the body, mind and soul - physical, mental and spiritual. We’ve hit all of these notes with Carmy and Sydney, he’s started making physical contact with Sydney more often; he yearns for her touch, the editing suggests very unsubtly that she is nestled firmly on his conscious and his soul literally is at peace with at the thought of her and when he’s around her.
Suppression: to suppress is prevent the development, action, or expression of (a feeling, impulse, idea, etc.); restrain (Oxford Dictionary). As it has been discussed in grave detail in all of the beautiful meta, there’s a couple of solid reasons why Carmy has withheld crossing the romantic threshold; workplace relationship (major liability), lack of past relationship history and his past trauma so yes very very loaded. I’ll probably write about this next because now I’ll thinking about it lol.
The Test: The ‘fire suppression test’ is symbolic of Carmy’s growing desire, passion and love for Sydney. The Bear *restaurant* may have passed the ‘fire suppression test’ but the bear *Carmy* has failed and was unsuccessful at fire suppression - insert table scene *my attention shouldn’t be split, it shouldn’t have to be shared, she’s so great it scares the shit out of me, I could do this without you, I wouldn’t want to this without you, you make me better at this, you deserve my full focus, you’re not alone*.
‘Strange Currencies’ - R.E.M.
And I don't know what you mean to me
But I want to turn you on
Turn you up, figure you out
I want to take you on
These words, you will be mine
Carmy does not have the emotional vocabulary to describe the role that Sydney plays in his life and his heart and the arson gene is strong in the Berzatto family (shoutout to the op that said that) and Sydney is the fire thats ablaze and engulfing Carmy’s heart. Lmao why am I so corny.
I’m a walking, living, breathing ‘confirmation bias’ and I’m unstoppable. No cast/crew, media article and sure as hell no anti shipper/platonic battalion member could ever stop me. The only thing that can stop me is an episode that dismantles the entire ship or the series finale that is inconclusive.

Kansas political leader breaks law in effort to hide votes
the Kansas Court of Appeals has ruled that Kansas Secretary of State (the person in charge of voting) Scott Schwab violated state open-records law when he ordered a software vendor to disable the ability to produce a public record
the ruling is the latest victory for Davis Hammet, a voting rights advocate, in his three-year legal fight with Schwab, who works to educate and engage young adults and underrepresented communities on elections in Kansas. he has filed a series of requests for provisional ballot reports under the Kansas Open Records Act (KORA) to help voters have their ballots counted, and to research the issue to better advise public officials about policies that impact voters
in an earlier lawsuit, Shawnee County District Judge Teresa Watson ordered Schwab to turn the information over to Hammet. corrupt Republican Secretary of State Schwab responded by criticizing the court and asking ES&S, the software vendor for the state’s election system, to disable the reporting feature. allowing this would allow all computer records of public information to become inaccessible through the simple manipulation of what the computer system is asked to do
KORA declares the state policy is that public records be open for inspection by any person, and that the policy “shall be liberally construed and applied.” That means agencies cannot conceal records
“This is a clear victory for government transparency and public records access,” said Josh Pierson, the senior staff attorney for the ACLU of Kansas who argued the appeal before the court. “It affirms what we’ve said all along - that Secretary Scott Schwab violated the law, and that government agencies should be working to make records more transparent, rather than less.”
the judge also declared that the secretary’s claim that he no longer can produce the provisional ballot record is “disingenuous”
“What can be turned off can be turned on. When the secretary directed ES&S to turn off the computer feature that generates the provisional ballot detail report - a report correctly declared to be a public record - he denied reasonable public access to that public record. That denial of public inspection of a public record violates the Kansas Open Records Act.”
the appeals court directed the district court to order Schwab to restore the reporting feature

I don’t talk about it enough but Addam/Ben is such a good dynamic. Because while Addam would have been under a lot of stress, considering his present predicament (as a wanted criminal technically), he can still have a brief moment of happiness with someone who doesn’t judge him unnecessarily. And Ben, who is depicted as a person very concerned with honor, still chose to trust Addam and follow him. He’s the one who commanded the centre in Addam’s army. It’s mentioned in Fire & Blood that Ben has experienced more of the horror of war in his short life than many other people his age or older. It made him kind of ruthless and violence prone but I think he would be able to relax and let his guard down a little around Addam who is repeatedly shown to be protective of others. Their characterizations work really nicely together.
Regardless of whether it’s just a platonic friendship or something more like romance, Ben must have cared a lot for Addam. After Tumbleton, when the Riverlords retreated from the battlefield, they left their dead behind. Except for Ben, who took Addam’s body with him rather than leaving it to the carrion crows. Even laying his remains to rest at Raventree Hall, despite Addam not being a Blackwood (unless they got married at the Isle of Faces, in which case…).

In case anyone wondered what a fire suppression sprinkler head looked like. Its basically a valve held closed by a glass vial designed to break at a certain temperature. The water shoots out, hits the fingered disk underneath and splashes everywhere hopefully putting the fire out.
