the funny thing about the conflicting narratives that kon, jon, and chris/lor zod have in modern day dc comic writing is like. the top of the house (editors, senior and executive leadership, IP brand managers) don’t WANT to publish anything with depth bc then that would mean admitting that kon was a child sex abuse victim during superboy 1994, that chris was a victim of different kinds of abuse pre-flashpoint, and that jon COULD have been a victim of child sex abuse in the volcano bc of the implications by bendis and taylor.

but like, that’s only if you dig even an INCH deeper, but they won’t, so then you get: kon flip-flopping in characterization even though jeff lemire spent a year trying to fix geoff’s sins and then bendis carried OVER that character development into yj2019, only for fitzmartin and stmot to completely retcon all of that.

then you have jon who gets panel time on different teams and angles, but all of it is superficial to the point where not a single person since 2019 has been able to really opine on The Volcano without it getting awkward bc no one actually wants to commit to the bit and write “a child called it” for dc comics.

then you have chris who is technically dead bc of the reboot, but they abused his ass so bad they had to remake him for rebirth and then abused lor so damn bad, he apparently sold his pregnant mother and father out to the galactic version of genghis khan’s army.

like, not all dc comics are bad rn, i agree, but the superstories are ESPECIALLY in the trenches bc no one’s willing to commit to the bit. they’re so unwilling to commit to the bit that lois is doing literally everything but raising her kids, even tho rebirth’s mission was to mommyfy her in the worst way possible. like, ALL of superfam writing is currently at an impasse cuz WHERE are we gonna go if we don’t get these stories back in order again? karawriting apparently cant exist without power girl. the twins get to show up, but ONLY if kennedy johnson’s around to write his OCs. lois had a whole run after jon got aged up, and her interactions with jon were some of the weirdest shit i ever did read bc it’s like they absolutely cannot have their main supercouple admit that their kid was abused bc of them.

honest to allah, i feel like lana and john henry are the ONLY ones who got to miss the bullshit this era of dc comics. they’re getting married! lana’s not in a shit marriage anymore! john henry finally accepts he’s a super and not just some poser wearing the shield of a dead man! they’re running steelworks! they’re happy!

meanwhile clark and lois are fucking around with doomsday while magically!deaged!jon kent is telling billy batson that the only thing making this life worth it after losing his childhood getting starved in a volcano is his boyfriend. like my boy is on suicide watch. he’s killing himself the second jay leaves him, and his mom never kisses him on the forehead anymore. kon can’t even admit he was in love with his abuser bc of bad writing. chris is DEAD and lor got his unborn sibling KILLED. im sick 😭

currently having EMOTIONS abt your 'Billy adopts kon and it goes p good actually'. Billy's there just like oh man I'm rambling they're gonna think I'm so lame...meanwhile I as a reader (and presumably also Kon and possibly the other characters present??) are actually going 'oh my god. oh my god he's known Kon for like one singular minute and already arranged a flat according to his best predictions of Kon's needs/wants, gave Kon FIRST PICK OF BEDROOM, and has freely offered to learn how to cook AND how to drive for the sole purpose of taking better care of Kon'. like. oh my god. oh my god. Billy is so precious and I want to give him a hug. I hope Kon isn't too overwhelmed or suspicious due to Billy's enthusiasm tho lmao. (pls could there be..more? more Billy adopts kon, if possible?) anyway I love ur writing. thank you. idk how to ask from a sidelong but this is tryingahandinholdingapen btw :D

Rich people are weird, Billy decides, then sets the swiss rolls and zebra cakes and rest of the strawberry shortcakes on the counter in case Kid Flash is still hungry or Superboy wants any of them and closes the pantry. Batman’s just doing his best, he guesses. Though Billy hopes he knows how to coupon, if he’s always buying brand-name. 

Well, he’s Batman. It’d be weirder if he didn’t know how to coupon, Billy figures.

It looks like Superboy ate all of his snack cake while Billy and Kid Flash were in the pantry, at least, which Billy hopes means he liked it. He doesn’t know how much real food Superboy’s had, but Batman’d said he should be fine eating solid stuff and not just whatever he’d been getting in his cloning pod. Though Billy’d still asked if they could get some bottled smoothies and protein shakes and stuff like that to keep in the fridge, just in case. He figured those might be easier for him to eat and digest, if it came up. Or like, maybe appeal to him more, if nothing else? 

Billy has no idea, honestly, he’s just doing his best here. The wisdom of Solomon is pretty useful but it’s not really, like, that much of a parenting guide. 

He is not going to cut Superboy in half. Like, ever. Like he understands the idea of that story but also it is an insane and incredibly freaky story and he is just not invoking it, ever. Just no way.

“If it’s alright, Captain, we should get going. We’ve got a bit of a drive to get home,” Mrs. West says, then sighs as Kid Flash empties the boxes of swiss rolls and zebra cakes in lightning-fast succession, though he leaves the strawberry shortcakes alone. Billy checks in the fridge and offers him a couple of the more filling smoothies–peanut butter and banana should be more filling, anyway, even with a speedster’s appetite. He steals those from convenience stores sometimes, when he can. He can’t be Captain Marvel all the time. 

Well–maybe he could, he guesses. But he does miss being himself, sometimes.

“Thanks, man,” Kid Flash says eagerly, then immediately shotguns both smoothies. 

“Wally,” Mr. West says in exasperation as Mrs. West sighs again. “Don’t eat Captain Marvel out of house and home.” 

“It’s okay, we’ve got lots of food!” Billy promises cheerfully. “I work with Flash, I know how hungry he gets. I bet it’s way worse when you still have growth spurts to get through.” 

“It is so much worse,” Kid Flash mutters vehemently, eyeing the empty smoothie bottles in his hands accusingly. Billy gets him another peanut butter banana one on principle. He really doesn’t want Kid Flash to be that hungry. It’s . . . not a good feeling. 

“We appreciate it, Captain, really, but we’ve got snacks and a cooler in the car,” Mrs. West says. 

“Oh, good,” Billy says, relieved. Mr. and Mrs. West both give him strange, inscrutable looks, then glance back to Superboy. Billy wonders if he likes peanut butter banana smoothies. Though if he liked the snack cakes, there’s strawberry banana ones too, so that might be better? And strawberry kiwi, but that’s probably less filling. “Superboy, do you want a smoothie too?” 

“No,” Superboy says. Billy pauses again, then gets him a strawberry banana one and tosses it over. Superboy catches it, eyes it, and then opens it and takes a sip.

Okay, Billy thinks he’s getting the hang of this. But also they should probably talk about how “no” needs to actually mean “no”. Like, for Superboy he’s sure it’s just like that phase when toddlers want to say “no” to everything no matter what, but it’s still important for him to understand. Billy doesn’t want to accidentally upset him or overstep because Superboy doesn’t know how to really say “no” to something.

Yeah, they definitely need to talk about that, he decides.

ramble about jason ? who is he? i feel like id like him

i am putting this under the cut bc it got stupid STUPID long lol. its also very incoherent and rambling so idk. be warned.

jason todd is the second adopted son and robin to bruce wayne/batman. he grew up in a extremely poor part of gotham (which gives him a connection to the underdogs that bruce never had oop) his dad went to jail/died when he was a kid, and his mom ended up passing away from a drug addiction. jason became a self-sufficient street kid at a very young age.

how do independent young street kids meet up with the motherfucking batman?? easy. they jack the tires of the batmobile.

THIS IS HIS REAL BACKSTORY. IM NOT KIDDING. WHO IS DOING IT LIKE HIM!!!!

anyway baby jason helps bruce take down a crime ring inside of a school and bruce goes you’ve got gumption! be my robin blah blah blah and jason becomes robin ii!! im sure this will go so well for him

as time goes on jason’s anger management issues start rising to the surface and bruce, the biggest hypocrite on the east coast, takes umbrage with this. just like bruce, jason has an extremely strong drive to do the right thing and obtain justice, but he often finds himself frustrated with the constraints of the legal system.

this comes to a head with felipe garzonas, the son of a diplomat who sexually assaulted a young woman but cannot be held accountable due to ”"diplomatic immunity”” the young woman ends up hanging herself out of desperation. jason—who is particularly sensitive about violence toward women—takes this hard. he goes to felipe’s apartment to exchange some words and, well.

personally, i don’t think jason killed garzonas, but i wouldn’t be particularly upset if he did. guy was an asshole and nobody should feel bad that hes dead. but already we can see the cracks forming in jason and bruce's relationship and in jason's relationship with the extremely strict bat ethos.

anyway, jason gets benched as robin due to his anger issues (bruce. come on. a modicum of self-awareness.) while he’s benched, he discovers that the woman who raised him was not, in fact, his biological mother. jason runs away from home to find her, bruce eventually catches up, and they find jason’s biological mother, sheila haywood, working as a doctor in ethiopia.

unfortunately for everybody involved the joker is also in ethiopia doing….some joker nonsense with nuclear weapons. i don’t fucking know. anyway, turns out sheila is working for the joker, and jason, in an attempt to save her (because of COURSE he was trying to save her, because he is always always trying to be good and caring and heroic) gets lured into a warehouse and beaten half to death with a crowbar. joker leaves jason and sheila in the warehouse with a ticking bomb. they don’t get out in time. 

that’s right!! dc just killed off a roughly fifteen year old robin!! ahaha!!

it’s important to understand that like. jason STAYED dead. like he was dead for a long-ass time!! i’ve read that a common saying in comic book circles was something along the lines of “only two characters stay dead: jason todd and bucky barnes” and uh. i feel we all know how the bucky barnes thing went. anyway.

i'll help you guess, bruce. this is jason. surprise!!!

yeah he’s back!!! roughly sixteen years real time and four-ish years comic time after death in the family, we get under the red hood where jason todd returns to gotham city with a vengeance. how did we come back, may you ask? superboy punched reality too hard. he dug himself out of his own grave. wandered around brain dead for a bit before he got tossed into a magic pit and came out spitting mad. don’t worry about it it’s mostly handwaved.

(but wait!! if it’s four years comic time and he died when he was fifteen, wouldn’t he be a whopping nineteen years old?? yes. yes he is. possibly less, if you don’t count the time he spent brain dead or comatose. this will help to explain many of his succeeding actions)

anyway jason comes back to gotham and he is PISSED bc 1.) batman clearly isn’t an effective deterrent, seeing how crime continues to run rampant. gotham needs somebody to follow through on the threats and take the people who can’t change out of the equation. 2.) the joker is still alive. bruce claimed to love him like a son, and yet the man who brutally tortured and murdered him is still alive. 

AHHHHH anyway im normal

they fight about this. blow some stuff up about it. jason kills some guys. eventually, jason tries to give bruce an ultimatum between killing the joker, letting jason kill the joker, or killing jason so jason won’t kill the joker. bruce handles this by uh. hitting him in the neck with a batarang. ahahahaha

(wow that’s a lot of blood!! wouldn’t that have killed him?? some people (me) think it did, and whatever brought jason back for round 2 brought him back again for round 3. your father didn’t break his closest held rule to kill your killer, but he did to kill you. fucked!!)

anyway, after this jason’s role fluctuates. he goes through a phase where he’s a full-on villain/antagonist (and a ginger?? for some goddamn reason??) and then he moves into a more anti-hero/tortured hero role, which is roughly where he’s at now. sometimes he kills and sometimes he uses rubber bullets. sometimes bruce lets him do whatever and sometimes he really really doesn’t. depends on who’s writing him. 

there are a LOT of things that i like about jason peter todd. i think it’s pretty wild that he died that one time. i think it’s cool that he’s high-key a lit nerd (in just the comics i’ve read, he’s casually dropped references to orwell, austen, dumas, and a few others that i don’t even know despite having roughly five sixths of an english degree.) i think the white streak is cool. i love how stupid and dramatic he is at his best. i like the dumb loser quips that he makes. i think it’s wild that he’s doing all this in his late teens-early twenties.  

i love his deep, deep empathy, especially for the people batman overlooks.

i think his fraught relationship to his own emotions is incredibly fascinating. jason tries so hard to present himself as somebody who doesn’t give a damn and can’t be bothered by anything, but he’s a terrible liar and his true, explosive emotions always leak through. he’s always furious and grieving and trying, and no matter what he does, those are coming through to the surface.

loathe as i am to give scott lobdell credit for anything at all ever, there’s a really good illustration of this in red hood and the outlaws vol 2 (a jason comic that is not great, but is at least readable and often even fun). jason’s just found out that his dead and presumed estranged biological father tried to write him letters and reconnect while he was in prison. jason never got these letters, so he never got the chance. he goes to his father’s grave and digs it up, all the while screaming that he doesn’t care.

obviously, he does care. he cares so deeply. he tries to cover it up, but it just keeps on exploding through. it’s so delicious. 

anyway if you’re bored and you want to explore jason’s whole deal, i recommend starting with the under the red hood movie. it’s a little over an hour long, it does a pretty good job of hitting condensed emotional beats (even if it has to cut some pretty good moments from the comic). jason is voiced by none other then Jensen Fucking Ackles, and he does a really good vocal performance.

if you like that, i recommend moving on to the under the red hood comic, which has even more fun/absolutely emotionally devastating beats. the other essential jason reading is lost days, which covers how he trained to become red hood and is pretty good except for one weird moment at the end that everybody just kind of ignores because it is ah. bad. 

every other jason comic ranges from pretty okay (seeing red, which is technically a green arrow arc but jason shows up and is written well) to good and fun but throws a lot of random names at you really quickly (task force z, the hill) to entertaining enough if you lower your standards (red hood/arsenal, red hood and the outlaws vol 2, appearances in the morrison batman and robin run) to actively bad but characterizes jason pretty well despite everything and you’re desperate (gotham war) to do not read at any costs unless you are truly at your limit oh my god (red hood and the outlaws vol 1). there are plenty of other ones where jason has more of a supporting role. there's also a lot of excellent jason-centric fic, which is where i got into batfam, but this is long enough already jesus christ.

i’m wrapping up now because this has turned into a goddamn manifesto. to anyone who made it to the end, thank you. you’re a doll. here are some of my favorite moments of jason being absolutely silly as a palate cleanser.

January Comics Round-Up

New year, same old comics! Let's go!!

Action Comics (480-492) (1978-1979)

Some neat storylines, my fave was the one about the light from Krypton's explosion finally reaching earth! We've got both Atom and Air Wave backups now, so I do get to see Jean and also tiny Hal Jr, which is fun!

Superman (323-332) (1978-1979)

Huge sigh about martin pasko (my enemy) bringing back the worst parts of the Lana v Lois rivalry and the scheming to prove Clark is superman schtick for Lana. Like, I'm excited to see Lana again, but.... at what cost?

Superman Family (188-194) (1978-1979)

!! Lois got a throwaway mention of Lucy! She knows her sister is alive! We have still not fucking seen them in the same story let alone on the same page! However the amount of ass that Lois gets to kick every issue does make up for it a tiny bit. Also we get a doom patrol cameo, Mal and Karen, AND the newsboy legion teams up with Jimmy and Roy Harper to go up against Cadmus (the DNA Project here) and find out what happened to Jim Harper, Roy's uncle!

Black Lightning (7-11) (1978)

No Rose/Thorn Cameo, but there definitely wasn't room for it, and Jeff is such a good solo hero that it's not really necessary anyway... if they hadn't imploded and we had gotten years more Black Lightning then it would have been fun to see.... but it sure did end at issue 11. The unfinished ink story from issue 12 is pretty fun, but goddamn do the seventies shine thru when they send a runaway kid back to his dad who is known to hit him and his mom, with the advice that really, he needs to be the grownup in this situation, because nobody else is.

World's Finest Comics (247-254) (1977-1979)

World's finest is still doing the anthology thing, so I'm still more excited about the Black Canary and Green Arrow stuff then the main feature, but sometimes there is some cool stuff where the story overlaps different hero's and you get to see if from different perspectives, which I quite like.

DC Presents (1-5) (1978-1979)

I'm enjoying getting to see all the different Superman team-ups, and of course there is the Metal Men team up, this is the only time we ever get to see the metal men.Issue 5 finally reconciles the two Atlantises into Tritonis and Posiedonis!

Superboy (236-247) (1978-1979)

They've started leaning a lot more into interpersonal drama and soap opera-isms which can be fun and can be tiresome, but it really does highlight the fact that these kids are growing up/have grown up. Both weddings that we've seen so far have had truly awesome wedding fashion, on that note.

Adventure Comics (456-461) (1978-1979)

This is a fun anthology line up now! we've got extra flash stories! we've got deadman! we've got aquaman! We still Do Not Have a name for Aqualad!!!!!!! Give it to him DC!!

Green Lantern (101-112) (1978-1979)

Itttyyyyyy!! We will always love u!! This section has a nice juxtaposition of space stuff to more worldly matters, and is always a fun read. I like to see Carol and Dinah hanging out because often Carol seems quite removed from the greater dc universe (outside of Barry and Iris of course.

The Brave and the Bold (133-146) (1977-1979)

At this point it's just fun to see character's that you don't get to see often in this, like hi creeper hi!! (tho now he is part of the WFC anthology lineup so that is fun). Human target in now the backup and i'm sorry i Do Not Care about that guy at allllll.

Jonah Hex (1-20) (1977-1979)

Jonah is having an absolutely terrible time being an outlaw, but me? I'm having a great time! I enjoy that while he often does the right thing, he's just about always an shithead about it. It feels weird to say that him being indifferent at best on women's suffrage makes him a stronger character, but it really does feel that way. Like, this guy doesn't have modern (70s) values he's from the 1800s!

The Warlord (11-17) (1978-1979)

Wooow they managed to pack so much into this! Tara is back! Morgan has a son! Who is immediately kidnapped by the OG evil wizard. Exciting times all around!

Showcase (97-104) (1977-1978)

Got a fun Power Girl story, a Hawks story, and the 100 issue special for the end of showcase! The last issue was war stories which was... anticlimactic, so I think this one was also canceled unexpectedly.

All New Collectors Editions (54-58) (1978)

Superman V Wonder Woman was okay, Superman V Captain Marvel was whatever, Lightning Lad and Saturn Girl's wedding was fun, but Superman VS Muhammad Ali was incredible. V good, highly recommend, absolutely ends with Ali knowing Supes secret identity.

Doorway to Nightmare (1-5) (1978)

This wasn't supposed to be a mini I think, i'm fairly certain that it is a victim of the implosion, but it was very good and I liked to see Madam Xanadu's origins. It makes so much sense how much she meshes in with Spectre in the 80s run.

Sooo this month was a little sparse, but at least I finished up 1978!! I definitely didn't get caught up putting together a new skyrim modlist or anything, nooo!

Favorite Superboy villain (if you have one, if not then favorite sb comic) and a plotline you think had a lot of potential but should have been written better

idk about villain (maybe black zero or he's not technically a superboy villain but his fight with cyborg superman was cool.) buttttt in terms of potential i think a lot of sb comics are filled with half-baked ideas that never get to see full fruition :P

i think my favorite is hypertime probably because 1) i liked seeing all the diff kons (into the konverse....) esp robin!kon <3 and 2) seeing him confront Paul and Black Zero and grapple with the darker aspects of himself was neat. I liked seeing the powers Kon could possibly gain in the future and he's just so <333 in that arc. It's been a long while since ive read it tho so i could probably go into more depth if i reread 3) also around this time he's been feeling very down and so seeing yj ask about his whereabouts and mickey cannon being like "i didnt realize so many people cared about him" made me go aaaaaah and later kon asking clark if he came back to the right reality was so interesting to me. i think this arc presents a really neat struggle with belonging and knowing ur place in the universe and it was like yeah <3 he belongs in this reality he is so loved <3

i think my other favorite is him in the whole apokolips arc between his solo and yj. i liked seeing him and his conflict with tim finally reach its climax and him having to deal with the fallout and consequences it has on his friendships w all of yj really, however i was pretty disappointed to not actually see an apology scene between tim and kon even if i think the yj team reuniting chaotically was very in fashion for them

and the whole sins of youth arc in general was cool :0 it gave me the "All I got is who I am!" line so <3

Some other things i liked was the whole peter pan thing ofc --there was a couple issues where he gets trapped in a place and they try to do a lost boys thing but didnt commit (but i have a fic idea thats got one page written about this).

i kinda liked most of his arcs in general, from the beginning with him learning to be a hero in ROTS to him trying to make a name for himself and messing up a lot along the way but continuing to try anyways. but like i said, i think if these emotional arcs could go One step further or allowed to delve into some of the darkness of these arcs or didnt fall back onto tropes his solo would have been stronger.

for example, during the cadmus era of his life, i would have liked to see more exploration of the fact he's back in the place that made him and now have him working for them. or in the hawaii era, they could have gone into how he could have had friends his age at school but got thrown into a wack ass love triangle. in general, the hawaiian issues could have been treated with more respect as well. they also introduced silver sword, but it didn't go anywhere i feel like T-T

also for the kon in smallville plotline i think it would have been cooler to see kon struggle more to be a regular person but his rebel streak keeps taking over

Ahh its one of my favorites! I was and still am pretty proud of that one, i think i managed to encompass a lot about kon that makes him such an interesting character to me, and it ended up feeling cohesive which is p high on my writing priorities list. Its hard. Its also got a lot of ma and kon which is an extremely underrated dynamic imo, since people love to make up stories about kons 'dads' instead of engaging with his relationship with ma at all. Superboy 2011 you will always be famous theyre family!!

The part about the dead girl in the river was inspired by a very similar story my grandparents told me about and well its scary and i kept thinking about it. Something about the hopelessness of a situation where the best outcome is simply finding a dead body felt like it would speak to kons sense of duty and feelings of failure a fair amount. I was afraid it would end up feeling too pretentious but i like how it came out in the end, i had a great time writing it and it flows well. That + all other smallvile scenes are also important to show kons life in smallvile, how he fits in outside of superhero work and how people see conner kent; a big deal considering how important Image is to kons character

There was also a challenge i liked to give myself when writing dc fics, specifically kon centric fics, which was not to have timkon in it, because the majority of fics in kons tag are tim centric timkons, so they're here in this fic as best friends but i avoided any timkon hints even tho i do enjoy them a lot

ok i wanna start this by saying this is pure rant. totally unimportant feelings about the show. i’d do a whole analysis or essay type thing but i’ve done enough of that against my will </3

i started titans for nightwing and starfire bc they were my favorite actors. seriously anna diop is so gorgeous i couldn’t get over it and still won’t. in a way, i also started watching for jason because it seemed like a whole new take on his character (bc it was) and i was excited on how they’d do the whole robin/red hood story with the titans. jason’s introduced as the immature and loud teenager which didn’t seem like a good idea for the red hood part of his story but he’s also still robin at this point. at the time i think he was moreso there to introduce nightwing’s development and departure from being robin because batman in this show is just yucky. i don’t remember enough to talk about that tho lawl

then it gets suckier than it started because out of nowhere the whole team starts treating jason like shit. he goes from the goofy one to the young and always angry character and that’s when i just KNEW they were finna fuck him over. first off the team (nightwing, star, raven, yada yada) takes in this girl rose wilson bc slade’s trying to kill her. if you guessed that she’s actually there to help slade kill the titans or whatever then you’d be right, she’s basically like tera from the judas contract if you watched that. and they made her jason’s LOVE INTEREST and at first they were cute but UHJHJGJFJFJ i cant start on that rn

so like i said earlier right now jason’s the immature angry teenager of the group. at some point someone (im pretty sure it was rose) pranks everyone by putting some fucked up shit in their rooms, like drawing crosses all over raven’s room. tell me why EVERYONE AUTOMATICALLY BLAMES JASON??? they just assumed he did it for whatever fucking reason. so that’s one way the team treated him like shit 😭 another ginormous part to this: yk how jason goes after the joker even tho batman told him not to?? it’s basically that but instead of the joker it was slade that he went after. got kidnapped and tortured cuz what’s a jason todd character w/o that right. then he ALMOST died but didn’t bc superboy saved his life, blah blah blah all this other stuff and then he almost commits suicide! wowww so fun!

so at this point i’m thinking “ok thst was weird but trust the process right???” long story short nightwing fucks up, team disbands, jason and rose disappear for the whole next season or wtvr, then in a random episode jason and rose are basically confirmed to be dating and i think they live in part of bruce’s mansion or smth??? idk anyway over the course of a few episodes we see their relationship develop and they’re actually kinda cute. like jason fake proposed to her with six bigass sandwiches that he made and it was so adorable and BOOM rose tells him she was originally supposed to sabotage the titans and that’s why the team disbanded so he’s like “ykw fuck you” and then he disappears AGAIN. this was very random so i just assumed it was supposed to add on to why he did what he did later on…

ok now when he comes back we get into red hood. i guess they kinda mashed jason’s original story with the arkham knight story??? i forgot exactly what happened but i think what happened was he got buddy buddy with scarecrow and reverse engineered his fear gas so that it gives you a munch of adrenaline and makes you fearless or wtvr. this was one of my least favorite things about this interpretation of jason because making him rely on drugs to do the things he wants to without fear just. does not make sense to me??? if anything i feel like jason would despise drug addiction and things of the like but that’s neither here nor there! so now he’s pumped full of drugs and he goes to find the joker. then he dies and gets dumped in the lazarus pit in the same episode so him dying has literally no significance. THEN BRUCE KILLS THE JOKER. so now i’m stuck like wtf are they finna do with this narrative??? literally eliminated one of the biggest parts of red hood. atp i’m wondering where tf they’re going with this and the answer is they went NO WHERE WITH IT. jason becomes red hood (and no hate to curran walters but it was lame as fuck) and does a lot of fucked up shit because scarecrow promised him power or whatever so now there’s no depth to what he’s doing and it takes him getting kidnapped and almost killed for the THIRD TIME before he decides he’s not doing the right thing. so he says fuck scarecrow and tries to help the titans stop whatever he was doing and ugh it’s just such sucky writing.

tl;dr only thing that kept me watching was a thirst for jason todd content, brenton thwaites and anna diop. like there are probably hours worth of stuff in that show i skipped bc it had nothing to do with the only three things i cared about. only thing that i was satisfied with was nightwing and starfire being together. there’s more stuff i could add but this was specifically for jason and how let down i was 💔

currently it's joker persona 5, hair like his is Hell to get looking good IMO. previously it's been snake zero escape, who again has a very specific Look to his hair that's hard to replicate without looking stupid, before that... apollo justice. tho there's no way to make apollo's hair look good it just isn't, before that i could never get caleb widogast's face to look right, and every character on the mighty nein has an outfit that is so complex to draw over and over again and OH SUPERBOY. i never quite got the hang of superboy.

imagine having file name conventions! uhh i Usually just name stuff something short and sweet that'll let me remember it at a glance and is sometimes funny enough that i'll laugh when i go back to look at the files. most of the complexity of my filing of art goes into the folders system, so i don't have to worry about naming something 'commish' for the 4th time, since there's only ever like, 30 drawings in a folder tops. my file names ARE full of typos tho. me and 'thisvs.png' against the word

Superman x witch fem black reader x Superboy! Our future? Part 1!

You come back from a mission only to meet a boy who claims to be your son?!

After your mission with Flash which was an epic win! After going back in time to help stop an ancient Egyptian pharaoh from destroying world you just wanted to turn in your report go home and watch TV and rest but life had another plan for you today!

"When you use that spell on that other guy and had him hallucinating that he was fighting in his underwear was absolutely hilarious Y/H/N! (Your Hero Name)

"Right? Like he didn't see that coming! I do feel bad for the poor guy tho." We entered the Batcave as we got closer we could hear three people talking I saw Batman and Superman an unfamiliar face. It was a boy well more like a teenager he had blue jeans, black combat boots with a black shirt when he turned around I can see the Superman symbol and for some reason you had this pull towards him and he looked strangely familiar?

"Hey guy's! We're back it took a while you know with the whole space-time thing but we're fine, we made it got the job done so uh who's the new guy new face looks pretty young to join the Justice League don't you think?" Flash says. Superman looked at me I gave him a small wave to say hello but he just gave an awkward smile looking pass you. It was weird he usually doesn't do that, something must have happened you turned your attention back to the teenager who was looking at you with his eyes glossing over like he was close to crying?

"Since when do we allow fans into the batcave?" I asked hands on my hips I had got a good look at his face better and to your surprise he looked kind of like Clark? Before you could say anything the boy ran towards you with such speed nearly knocked you over he pulled you into a big bear hug almost like he was too scared to let you go everyone just stood watching the scene Bruce stood with a blank face, Superman stood there with an uneasy look while Flash was just as confused as you were with what was going on.

"Your here! I made it just in time!" The boy says into your shoulder you honestly didn't know what the heck was going on but something in you felt a connection to this unknown boy. You hug him back rubbing his back he pulled back flustered.

"Uh hi?" I say with a confused smile.

"H-hi! I mean I'm sorry for uh hugging you I just got really excited!" The boy said with a nervous smile geez even his smile is like Clark's!

"That's fine hon just uh be careful next time you wanna hug someone. You nearly knocked me off my feet!" You say hitting his shoulder. He smiled but was still flustered, you got a better look he was definitely a spitting image of Clark but only a tad bit kid had some muscle on him that's for sure but what really caught your attention was his eye's they were Y/E/C (your eye color)you put a hand on his cheek making him flinch a bit from your warm touch.

"That's funny your eyes..." Before you could finish Flash cut you off sliding over next to you and the kid.

"Can someone explain what and who this boy is please?" Flash says looking the kid up and down, Batman looked towards Superman who looked back shaking his head Batman looked towards the boy who looked back nodding than turned at you nervous.

"Um so first I'm really happy to meet you and second please don't freak out when I tell you this but I'm Kon-el."

"Oh so you are Kryptonian! Another cousin you failed to tell us about Superman?" I asked jokingly but he just looked at you awkwardly with a tiny blush, okay what the heck is wrong with him? You just turned your attention back to the young man.

"Well it's very nice to meet you Kon-el the minute I saw you I knew you were somehow related to Superman. You are just as handsome as the man of steel himself!" You say with a smile he blushed at your words while Superman also looked flustered by you calling him handsome.

"Thanks...mom."

I froze the smile on my face slowly dropping I heard Flash gasped while Bruce and Clark stared at your face waiting for reaction the boy looked at you with a bit of concern but the only thing you could do was just stand in shock looking between the boy and Superman who was still waiting for your reaction but you let out a simple small confused "Huh?" before everything went black.

Clark's POV

Before anyone else could react Y/n eyes rolled in the back of her head luckily I had caught her in time. Conner I mean Superboy started to panic kneeling to the ground along side me.

"I-i'm sorry it just slipped out!" I just gave him a small understandable look.

"It's fine Superboy she's okay just in shock."

Not that you blame her I nearly had the same reaction I was in metropolis when Bruce had gave me the call saying that it was urgent I rushed over only to find Batman holding a teenage boy at gun point (it was a kryptonite gun) at first I was confused and concerned until Batman told me that the boy claimed to be mine and Y/H/N son which of course was hard to believe because I was in a relationship with Lois even though we've been having issues and Y/n had no interest in dating (at least that's what I was told by Diana) and we were only close friends nothing more nothing less. At least that's what I thought until the boy in front of me claimed to be our child and he needed the Justice League's help. Of course me and Bruce had doubts but I could see that he did resembled me a bit only he didn't have my blue eyes but had Y/E/C (your eye color) that's when the boy who called himself Superboy told Bruce to look in his back jean pocket and that there was a picture to prove it of course Batman did in to our surprise it was a picture of me and Y/n who was laying in a hospital bed, a beautiful but tired smile on her face and was holding a newborn baby, at the bottom of the photo it read "Welcome to the world our little miracle child Connor Kent" I had to hold on to something because I felt faint, Bruce held my shoulder trying to help me stand on my feet.

I had a son? the son of Superman and Y/H/N...we had a son?!

it just it sounded so...right??? I shouldn't be saying or thinking such things because I'm in a relationship with Lois but recently we've been having issues especially about how she feels about Y/n which just make this whole situation worse!

Just as Connor was trying to explain how he got here that was when Barry and Y/n entered the cave back from their mission, which brings us back to the present with me holding Y/h/n in my arms and Connor looking very concerned for his future mother.

"She did say she was tired after using so much magic and the shock of meeting Superboy I guess was too much for her body." Barry says arms crossed, I picked Y/n up bridal style then turn to looked at Bruce.

"I'll take care of this you call the other's." I say before walking out with Conner not far behind. Today has been tiring for everyone.

hiii I'm wondering, what issues do you have with Countdown, if you don't mind me asking?

Ooh i dont mind at all! I love talking! And potentially hearing more perspectives

Pleasee note that ive been reading all the Jason comics in order of release (started at flying todds jaybin currently at rhato), I've only read countdown once, my memory issues are a bitch, and everything is subject to change for forever 👍

I'm like, basing this whole ramble off my memory of events, and no rereading means no potential updating of feelings on it

To start on positives, I love many concepts and characters it brings to the table and all the different earths traveling they do, I think Donna, Jason, and Kyle are a fun trio as well, and their adventures are delightful. The different earths are all very interesting and i dearly wish we got to have more focus on them. I may not like it being so long but ehhh I've considered rereading it on occasion. The issues counting down are also a fun gimmick as well.

One of my problems is the like. Main story. It feels pretty messy just to like, read though. The extra issues onto the main 52 don't help. Not being familiar with that many dc characters in general doesn't help (was more of a marvel kid). Don't really remember how many character stories we were following in there anymore, it just felt like alot and I genuinely can't remember where half of them led

I ALSO. Skimmed it a bit. Especially later. That's on me. But to be fair to me it's 50 issues and I just don't think I'm big on long comic stories like that. in general. So it was always doomed to fail in the test of my personal opinion

(My favorite crossover comic so far has been legends, just to hammer that above point in)

I dont like the ending where they all hang out in a bunker on the good earth and the virus they have is spreading to just. kill that entire world. And they just go home after that. That's like, that felt weird. I'm just not big on heros accidentally slowly killing an entire universe. That just like. Hhhhng. Um. You know when the stakes get so big and bad they just kinda suck? If that's what I mean??

While I do like looking into Superboy Prime and Jason's resurrection. Don't like his dialogue here. Don't know if that's normal for him or not though

I felt a teensy bit validated when I looked it up after reading and saw many others not liking it I fear

But ignoring at all that. (Because while important to acknowledge when talking about my problems with it, most of what I just had to say is unfair to it)

My knowledge is on Jason. Let's focus on Jason

Jason just kinda. Sucks? He sucks in this. Do not get me wrong Jason is absolutely allowed to be an asshole, I won't ignore those edges. But he was more like,,, a generic asshole? He didn't feel like Jason to me, just more like, a template character or something. There are fun interactions and moments he has but just. Bwah. And it feels like a very strange turn too because for the first few issues I was actually really enjoying the Jason here. I'm not sure what happened

(Fun fact this is the first comic I felt showed Jason as angry. Actual "wow that guy is angry". the angry i was expecting when i started reading him. It was when Dick and Tim interrogated him, I actually think about this moment alot in some of my vague rambling thoughts on Jason, his anger, and how the controlled narrative after his death effects how people expect him to react and thus treat him. Its neat. I thought his interaction with Jimmy was fun and it's a neat contrast bc Jimmy and Dick n Tim were asking the same questions. I enjoyed the early issues of countdown alot, which I think made it have a harder fall for me)

But back to the bad. He's also. Consistently looking down on female heros? Excluding Donna but like. I can't remember it all exactly. but I do remember, that I felt very very very nervous when they said they were going to the genderswap dimension next (he didn't say anything here tho, actually)

Jason also just sorta,, very consistently gets beat up and knocked down? Felt very 'wow look at this guy he sucks don't you think he sucks. Do you want to see him get beat up constantly and not win any fight.' And there's no payoff to this at all. Nothing changes, nothing gets better, he immediately throws the red robin costume in the trash and we never talk about any of this ever again. He's just sorta an asshole punching bag the whole time and it's not something I enjoy. He gets into fights and gets put down and no one likes him. He doesn't even get to have fun while he's here, iirc he's basically just miserable and trying to get this over with the whole time. Kinda distantly wanted him to not leave the victorian era gotham, just a little bit, just a tad, to be real

And there's just a bit of whiplash to his whole character. We go from silly and carefully planning and competent to. Gestures vaguely. There is NO DOUBT very fun analysis about Jason you could do with this and the whiplash. But its not something I personally want to do with countdown

This post is about a Danny phantom and Red hood(Jason Todd aka the dead robin) crossover because I think there should be more content of them. Also like all my knowledge of these characters comes solely from here and fanfics. I don’t claim to be an expert I just think their neat. I suck at spelling so beware. With all that said, I have this story idea…

So when Jason dies in the whole joker explosion there is just enough ectoplasm in the area for him to create a really shoddy core. Like all it does is keep his body from decomposing and if it didn’t get anymore energy it would fade in a couple of years.

But then superboy does that whole punch the universe thing and that gives Jason’s shitty core just enough juice to bring him back to life but not enough to really heal him completely (it’s trying its best ok). Then Talia dunks him into the pit which im headcanoning is ectoplasm a random portal had spit out that got super corrupted. For a normal ghost this wouldn’t really be a problem cause they can filter it but Jason’s core sucks.

The pit madness basically makes all Jason’s underlying ghost instincts go up to 20 which explains how he act in the whole make Batman kill joker thing(because his actions make more sense if you think of him as a ghost and not a human). And I headcanon(or maybe it is a canon im not sure) that jason did die again from the batarang to the neck (death part two the electric BOOgaloo(ha get it) )and when Jason’s little core brings him back there it also has the a side effect that it takes away some of the corruption making jason mellow out a bit.

Things go on as normal until the whole penguin thing where bats beats him to death (father figure 2 is a failure bring in the next one). After Roy drags him away and he heals up Jason runs into Danny. Literally…

Sooo Danny finally tells his parents (no phantom planet tho ) and they accept him. But all is not what it seems because Later that night though they bring him down to lab and try to “fix”and/or figure out if he is really Danny. Jazz is at college, Sam is at a galla somewhere out of state with her parents, tucker competing in a week long tech competition, and Ellie is exploring the ghost zone so no one notices Danny is gone.

The guys in white come to investigate the Fentons and when the find phantom locked in the basement they kill the fentons an take him. Danny is with them for three months before they try to vivisect him. They go to touch him core and even with all the tech they are using to weaken him,danny lets out a wail killing almost everyone and escaping. The surviving GIW hunt him down as he tries to get back home. Danny is able to avoid them for a couple days but they find him and try to corner him in an alley. As Danny is running for his afterlife he senses a ghost nearby and runs to them in the hopes that whoever they are can help him fight off the GIW.

this is where he runs into jason. Literally.

So they collide danny says “help me” and hides behind jason. The GIW come sprinting into the alley guns a blazing and demand that jason hands over the freak. Jason looks at the bloody scared kid behind him then at the adults calling a child an it and goes full protect mode and kills them. After that is taken care of he goes back to Danny an asks if he hungry. Danny nods and they go get chili dogs.

They get close as Danny heals up and they plan to kill the rest of GIW. Danny morals have been a tad twisted because A)These guys just experimented on him for 3month B) They where using what they found out from experimenting on him to find ways to destroy the GZ C)he knows if he doesn’t kill them they keep trying to kill him and destroy the GZ.

They take down the GIW(cool fights and explosions) and Jason thinks that will be the end of it since danny can go back to his sisters and friends. Danny has other ideas. He does go home and tells the phantomily(phantom-family) that he’s ok but returns to jason and just starts following him around. The confrontation just kinda goes like this…

Jason: kid what are you still doing here. I’m dangerous go home.

Danny: hey I can take these guys any day and maybe I like hanging out with you. Dead guy to dead guy.

Jason: go home kid. And I prefer the term zombie.

Danny: nah ill think ill stay! I can even help my powers are super useful!

Jason:… still too risky, i not going let you become a child soilder im not Batman.

Danny: awww come on plzzzzz

Jason: your parents are probably worried about you Go. Home.

Danny: NO THEY’RE NOT THEY TRIED TO FIX ME!! AND THEN THE GIW KILLED THEM. IM LEGALLY DEAD!! I CAN’T GO TO SCHOOL, OR NASTY BURGER OR STAY AT JAZZ’S COLLEGE . OR ANYTHING!! I DON’T WANT TO LIVE IN THE GHOST ZONE I STILL WANT TO BE ALIVE. BUT IM NOT IM JUST just *sob* a freaky little boy …with freaky powers. I thought maybe you would.. you might-

So Red hood gets a partner in crime and Jason gets a family.

Phantom gets mentor who cares and Danny gets a new parent.

Kon has... always wanted to be Superman. It's what he was created to want, both like in-universe and as a character concept.

I'm gonna assume you guys asking this just... aren't as familiar with his character outside of maybe team books/adaptations where there's less of a stress put on it, but like, Kon wanting to be Superman one day has been a part of who he is since his creation. At different periods of his life it's been a bigger or smaller focus, sure, but it's absolutely always been there.

During Reign of the Supermen, the story he's introduced in, he goes around claiming to be the new Superman. That's why he was introduced, to be one of the four characters (the others being Steel, The Eradicator, and The Cyborg Superman) stepping up to take Clark’s place while he’s dead. Eventually he clarifies that he is a clone of the original (before it's revealed just after the event that at the time it was written he actually wasn't even that, and wouldn't be until a 2003 retcon) but still sees himself as ‘Superman’ and actively objects to even being called ‘Superboy’

I would also like to add on a funny note he, quite literally, trademarked the name Superman for himself. Like a legal trademark he & his agent then had to sell back to Clark once he was alive again. I'd include screenshots of that however, again, space is limited. (the selling back thing happens in Adventures of Superman #506 tho if you wanna see!)

By the end of the story Kon concedes that it's not his time to be Superman yet since Clark is still around, but that he's next in line for the future when Clark is done and he's more ready.

And this isn't... something that just suddenly gets forgotten with him. Particularly during Meltdown his wanting to be Superman one day is brought up... a few times. When he's dying he dreams about how he was supposed to be able to take the title one day, and then once he's cured but stuck at age 16... the fact that he can't age is something so upsetting to him because now he can't grow up to be Superman.

During Sins of Youth when everyone else initially gets aged up except him he gets very annoyed about it.

He does eventually get effected like everyone else, buuuuut his first girlfriend also gets killed in his arms. Ya win some, ya lose some. When he is an adult now and is Superman (with Clark now as Superboy) he starts to have a little bit of a change in his perspective on this because of some insecurities Clark expresses, and decides from that point on to focus more on being the best Superboy he can be rather than just focusing on wanting to be Superman someday

So now, from here, (as long as I'm remembering correctly) for a while he does definitely bring up the 'Im gonna be Superman one day!' thing less, uuuuuntil the 2003 'Lex & Clark are actually his clone parents' retcon makes things a lot more tricky for him.

Because even when he's focusing on being Superboy, it's not like he can just suddenly forget that he’s still in line to be Superman one day because it's who he is and who he was made to be... but now he's got a whole new element added into the equation of 'oh fuck what if I grow up to be like Lex instead?'

He gets really deeply in his own head about it and starts to feel like he's a fake because he was supposed to be Superman and now he doesn't think he can live up to that anymore.

And of course his fears about the Luthor side of his DNA are then realized during the whole Aut Vincere, Aut Mori 'Lex takes over Conner and makes him attack his team' story. And so he continues to feel like a fake in the aftermath of that, until Superboy-Prime comes around and makes it worse… But after fighting Prime and saving everybody during Infinite Crisis he finally feels like a hero, like Superboy again... but then he dies. He saved everyone but dies immediately after in Cassie's arms.

However these are comic books so he doesn't stay dead.

He comes back during Final Crisis, in a way that neatly calls back to his very first appearance in which someone had called him Superboy and he proclaimed "Don't ever call me Superboy!"... this time around?

Here he makes it pretty damn clear that's who he is, he's Superboy, and he doesn't need to be anything else but that. He's got that confidence back!

Ooooooor so it may appear. Then we get to the Boy of Steel story over in Adventure Comics... and we find out how Conner is actively keeping a tally of things Superman did and things Lex Luthor did and trying to figure out just where it is between them he falls. By the end of the story he realizes how crazy doing that is, and feels more confident in knowing he's never going to be Lex.

But ultimately, all of this actually just kinda circles back around into supporting that Conner still wants to be Superman one day, with it ending on his journal narration of

"What did Superman do? ✓ 15) Was Superboy."

Like, that very heavily implies he sees being Superboy as kinda a step on the way to one day being Superman, but he’s just not rushing it.

His following solo comic (Superboy Vol. 5) is a lot more about him just trying to like, navigate living in Smallville and where he's at right now as opposed to where he's going in the future... except for kinda Issues #6-7. In #6 he has a talk with Tim about direction in life and if Smallville is really where he should stay, but it doesn’t really have to do with hero identities/whether he wants to be Superman. And then #7 is where he's shown his worst nightmares come to life (due to a Red Mercy) in a terrible future where he's working with Luthor, but that’s more about Lex-based insecurities rather than what he wants out of the future. Otherwise the rest of the future stuff in that comic has more to do with Sujan and his mission rather than Conner's 'when I grow up' stuff.

So… yeah. He has… pretty consistently always wanted to be Superman. Whether you think he’d be good at it or not is more subjective, but to imply he as a character has never expressed it as a goal is just like factually incorrect.

New 52 Kon on the other hand was created for a totally different purpose (to be a cure for Jon Lane Kent or be Harvest’s living weapon, it kinda bounces between these two depending on who’s writing and where along the story we are) so if you were talking about him specifically then sure yeah he hasn’t really wanted that. But I doubt that’s what you meant bc I think most people at this point get that New 52 Kon is a very separate character who is not relevant to current Conner.

And since original Conner was reintroduced in 2019, talking about this stuff just SUPER has not been the focus, he’s been kinda busy with the whole ‘the world including Superman himself forgot me!’ thing so thinking about the legacy he’d want to take over down the line… just has not been the priority. But considering he never forgot the pre-reboot world, his feelings on the matter from back then would presumably be more or less his feelings on it now.

Like... TimKon is very funny to me because it is not inherently bad... it is just that almost everything that was Tim and Kon is almost always from Kon's worst times and the most distanced Kon is from Tim the better his writing has been.

It turkey does not help that this is attached to Tim Drake, whitest cunt in Gotham, who should be sent to the Sun so Damian can be back full time as the main Robin instead of Tim being so focused on him peaking as a teen... also, TimKon is almost always tied to fanon Tim which is...

Anyway, what are your thoughts on Dark Crisis YJ? I think it is s wild book but not a bad message on how the YJ girlies... they need to fucking let go of YJ.

I think everyone needs to read Superboy (2010).

theres nothing wrong w/ it in theory i just think tim's kind of an asshole sometimes w/o writers realising it and he really ends up bringing things down by accident. so agreed on the writing thing.

also part of my hatred for it and tim comes from just fanon stuff. i try to separate fanon from my enjoyment of canon ut its SOOO hard when its so inescapable.... so prevelant and bland... tim esp has that kind of stuff seep into the story where writers clearly favour him and want to make it clear by hoisting him over all his friends and damian and jason and stuff. so. it sucks. so yeah fanon tim is so bad my friend and i have a half-joke about tim doing adderall and cocaine and kickflipping over the sad puddle of tears that is fanon tim bc we think its funny how much fanon tim sucks.

ill get back to you maybe on that but yeah.. i like yj i own several trades of it. its fun! but sometimes its like. guys it been almost 30 years.... let them grow. also bart, cassie, and kon all existed independant of tim and sometimes tim stans forget this i think. they have other friends!! i do love the four of 'em but sometimes it feels like people treat it like Tim and His Three Sidekicks.
