July 2024 TBR--
Tumblr media
It's finally time for my Christmas in July reading! I've been looking forward to it for months because I have FOUR NetGalley ARCs that fit perfectly into my Christmas in July M.O. I'll be reading three Christmas Romances and one Mystery/Thriller set during Christmas. I also have four other books I'm really looking forward to reading in the back half of the month.
The Holiday Honeymoon Switch by Julia McKay (NetGalley)-- The first of my Christmas in July TBR. This is a rom-com where Holly Beech and Ivy Casey, two best friends who are so in sync they even look alike, swap places after Holly's fiancé jilts her and leaves her with a nonrefundable honeymoon. Both find their own romantic matches this holiday season.
Mistletoe Season by Shelia Roberts, Kathleen Fuller, and Pepper Basham (NetGalley)--This is a collection of three Christmas stories: Say No to Mistletoe (author going home for the holidays + romance), Return to Mistletoe (returning home after spending time abroad renovating an Irish castle), and The Mistletoe Prince (Prince is sent to small town North Carolina to prove he's ready for the royal life). I think the one I'm most excited to read is the first, but I'm always down for some Christmas romance.
Christmas in Aspen by Anita Hughes (NetGalley)--Mourning her mother, Caroline Holt returns to her late mother's upstate cabin to spend the holidays. But when she arrives, she discovers a letter addressed to her mother from a man declaring his love for her and saying he'll be waiting for her in front of the Little Red Mailbox in Aspen, Colorado on New Year's Eve. Caroline decides to see her mother's mysterious lover and travels to Aspen. But once she arrives she keeps running into another man and things start to get complicated. This sounds like it's going to be super emotional and character driven.
Everyone This Christmas Has a Secret by Benjamin Stevenson (NetGalley)-- Another book in the Ernest Cunningham series AND it's set at Christmas sign me the fuck up. I'm ready. I love ending my Christmas in July with a Mystery or Thriller set during Christmas. This one starts when a body drops in front of Ernest's feet during a Christmas pageant. It has the usual writing style that I enjoy so much and has the best end to a synopsis on GoodReads: "This Christmas everyone has a motive. So it's not a matter of who wanted the victim dead--but who got there first."
Teen Titans: Starfire by Kami Garcia and Gabriel Picolo (July release)-- This is the next book in the Teen Titans graphic novel series. They each follow a different Teen Titan before they become a Teen Titan. They've also started getting more interconnected as the series goes on which I enjoy. In this one we follow Kori Anders, who takes part in a clinical trial designed to treat her Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, and who discovers some strange powers she's never had before.
Sunny Disposition by Deanna Grey (Kindle)-- My hockey romance for the month. I realized a few months back that I've been reading at least one per month and decided to keep it going for the rest of the year. This is a book from an indie author following a sunshine gamer girl, Naomi, who shares a house with four hockey players and is drawn to a grumpy boy, Finn. There also seems to be a little bit of You've Got Mail Vibes in that he moderates for her online but neither know the other one is involved in the streams.
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins-- This one is a reread for me. I've been planning to reread this series since the beginning of the year, but struggled with where I would have the time. I also want to watch all of the movies because I don't think I watched Mockingjay at all (which is weird...that one may be my favorite book). I'm also going to be reading the prequel for the first time (and hopefully watching the movie as well. A dystopian world where children fight to the death. Social commentary. Food. (I swear I get so hungry reading Katniss practically starving in the Games).
Assistant to the Villain by Hannah Nicole Maehrer-- One I am SO excited to reread before the next book in the series comes out. At least this time I'll go into it knowing it's the first book in a series. We follow a girl who decides to take an office job with a villain because a girl's gotta get paid. There are castles and dragons and a very Grumpy Villain (who's secretly a softy...shhhh). It's so campy and fun and I can't wait to get back into it.
I'm hoping my birthday month reading knocks it out of the park. I'm excited to get back in the holiday mood and end the month with some fun rereads.

Sunny Disposition: Deleted Scene
In the first draft, there was more back and forth between Finn and Naomi after he finally confessed to being her mod. They had a little fight but eventually made up and talked through the night which resulted in the accidental sleep over you’ll see below. This scene also mentions Picard who was Finn’s dog before I cut him from the story (which I kinda regret tbh because the dog’s interactions with Finn was pretty cute lol)
I’d been dreading this day all year, so I never expected I wake up with a smile.
Finn’s arms were still around me from when we first drifted off to sleep. His head rested in the crook of my neck. My arm was numb under his weight. I hadn’t felt this happy in a long time.
“Morning,” he murmured when I tried to slightly adjust myself without disturbing him.
“Morning,” I whispered back. “Did I wake you?”
Finn pulled away, flipping onto his back as he said, “No. I’ve been up for a few minutes.”
And he’d still been cuddling me? I covered my smile with the back of my hand, not wanting him to get too self-conscious over the matter.
Finn ran his fingers through his hair. His thick, dark locks stood wild in each direction. I propped myself up on my elbow to watch.
He looked up at me. “What?”
“Nothing.” I shook my head. “I just never thought I’d be in your bed.”
When I wiggled my brows, Finn chuckled. He reached for my hand and I froze under his warm touch. He pressed the back of it to his lips.
“You’re not in my bed,” he said between kisses. I gulped at how deep his voice sounded when it was muffled.
“Then what is this?” I whispered, gesturing to the tangled bedsheets.
“Well…my bed.” His cheeks burned when I laughed. “But you made it sound like we did something… eventful.”
I touched my chest, exaggerating my tone as I said, “You don’t think having a heart-to-heart eventful? Bore my soul to you, Finn Howard.”
“No, no, of course.” Finn pushed himself up on his elbow too. He looked so saddened by my pretend hurt feelings that I decided to give up the ruse in an instant.
“It was a joke,” I promised. “A bad one, I guess. I think we’re going to have to work together on finding a middle ground of humor. Something that doesn’t leave you panicked with the fear you've offended me."
“I wasn’t panicked,” Finn said even though the tension in his jaw visibly relaxed.
I laughed. “If you say so.”
“What are you doing today?” Finn still held onto my hand, holding it close to his chest now.
I studied how my fingers entwined with his. Like long legs, we had long fingers. We could line our hands perfectly. It was a tiny detail that sent butterflies through my stomach. I loved that we were the same size. Loved that I still felt safe in his arms while also keeping him safe in mine.
“Today is my mom’s birthday,” I murmured. “I usually go visit her.”
Finn’s expression softened. “I see…You haven’t brought her up in a while.”
I took a breath. It was going to take a minute for me to get used to the fact that Finn was MidQuest. He knew more of my secrets than anyone who walked the planet. When he looked at me, I felt like I might as well be naked. He’d seen so much of me and I was just now getting used to being next to him in the flesh.
Finn’s confession, still fresh in my brain, now felt so much more real. Some part of me wished it was him because if it hadn’t been, I would have had to choose between the two.
“I would like to go with you,” he said. “If you feel like having company, that is.”
“You’d voluntarily go to a cemetery?”
His fingers squeezed mine. “For you. Yes.”
“I might be emotional,” I warned.
“That’s fine.”
“This is kind of heavy. Especially this early in our…” Our what? Relationship? Friendship?
“I don’t care,” he said. “I like being around you, no matter the day.”
My heart swelled. I couldn’t say anything more than, “Thank you.”
“No need to thank me.” He shook his head. “Just tell me what time you need me to be ready.”
I wanted to wait until the sun got higher in the sky. The weather felt nasty cold as of late, so I’d wait for the maximum level of warmth.
We spent the majority of time waiting in his room with Picard. Finn left only once to get breakfast. When he did, I hurried to the bathroom to splash water on my face and gargle mouthwash.
My complexion looked warmer than usual. I pressed my hands to my cheeks, taking in the sight of me in Finn’s oversized t-shirt. It fit me nicely. I turned around, admiring how round my butt looked in his clothes, and then, felt a little sheepish for wondering if he thought the same.
The fantasy of us being together wasn’t so much of a fantasy anymore. A small part of me urged myself to not get too excited. He’d left me once, so I had to stay prepared in case that happened again.
That wasn’t entirely his fault, though, I willed myself to believe.
Finn’s accident and his memory changed things. I wanted to be there for him just like he seemed determined to support me. Hope burrowed in my chest, making my cheeks burn. I would let myself enjoy it. Even for a moment. A day. Because this feeling was comforting. I wasn’t alone anymore.
By the time I made it out of the bathroom, the house was coming back to life. I heard something sizzling in the frying pan downstairs and soft voices conversating in the kitchen. Henrik almost bumped into me in the hallway when he slipped out of his room.
“Sorry.” He smiled and pulled out one of his earbuds. His black hair was covered with a beanie. He wore a black athletic turtleneck and baggy sweats. He respectfully kept his eyes locked on mine as he said, “Good morning.”
“Morning.” I smiled, trying to not look like I was embarrassed about being pant-less.
“All good?” he asked, though his smile told me he knew the answer.
“Yeah, you?”
“Can't complain.” He winked and started down the hall. “Take care of our boy. He’s hard on the outside but all soft mush on the inside.”

I know this isn’t a particularly common characterization of them (at least not what I’ve seen) but I personally think of the two;
Shanks rarely gets restless, he’s the one more content to just bask in a moment, it may not be in silence but he’s comfortable just doing nothing with his crew. As long as there’s alcohol, a hammock and the people he loves, Shanks is straight.
Contrary to that Mihawk is always itching to do something, entertain himself in some way. If he’s not dueling/training, he’s gardening if it’s not that then he’s cooking or he’s reading and if nothing else will do then he naps. but he’s always trying to occupy his time with something.
I think a lot of people don’t notice it because it’s not the jittery hyperactivity that people associate with it. But Mihawk is restless, endlessly so. He’s in a never ending fight with his boredom but it’s all internal.(except when he decides to make it someone else’s problem ala Don Krieg)
Mihawk’s the type of dude to implode instead of explode so it makes sense that things like restlessness don’t really show themselves in an outwardly physical way. Instead it’s more of an internal pressure and incessant need to stave off boredom. But because of his preference for being alone and the fact that the activities he chooses aren’t ones usually associated with restlessness. It goes unnoticed.
Except by Shanks who’s always going out of his way to make the life of a pretty little birdie a litte more interesting.

This is a little late, but I’m so excited for my May TBR!! Here’s what I’m planning to read for the month:
Bonus Action 4⭐️ {review}
Sunny Disposition -currently reading
The Sunshine Court -currently reading
Haikyu!! vol 2
Lunatic
Prince’s Gambit
Three Meant To Be
All The Feels
Cosmoknights vol 1
The two books I’m currently reading are so freaking good! I’m also pretty sure that The Sunshine Court is gonna be one of the most emotionally devastating books I’ll read all year.

This playlist is songs that Apollo would listen to, match his vibe, i have a drawing/writing idea for, or match his lore.
If you wanna send me an ask as to why songs are picked, I'd be happy to answer!

July 2024 Wrap Up--
Tumblr media
July was a more productive month than the photo shows. I read four NetGalley ARCs for my Christmas in July and an indie romance as well as the books pictured. Actually, the two books in this photo are my rereads for the month of July. I wanted to get more read during the month, but one of my planned reads was a new release that got pushed back a few months. Let's see the ratings.
Novellas/Short Stories-- 1. Everyone This Christmas Has a Secret by Benjamin Stevenson (NetGalley)-- 4 stars.
Novels-- 1. Mistletoe Season by Sheila Roberts, Kathleen Fuller, and Pepper Basham (NetGalley)--2.83 stars.
2. The Holiday Honeymoon Switch by Julia McKay (NetGalley)--4 stars.
3. Christmas in Aspen by Anita Hughes (NetGalley)--2 stars.
4. The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins--4 stars (original rating).
5. Sunny Disposition by Deanna Grey-- 2.5 stars.
6. Assistant to the Villain by Hannah Nicole Maehrer-- 4 stars (original rating).
The average star rating for the month is 3.33 stars. I seriously considered bumping up my rating of Assistant to the Villain because while I was reading I just kept remembering what all of the twists and turns in the book made me feel the first time around. But I ultimately chose to stick with my original rating.

I think about this yuji often. It's one of the few times we've seen yuji pre-jujutsu that clearly shows he has a scarier side to him and i think its just a nice contrast in how he's usually seen.
With how yuji's been in the current chapter (overwhelmed with fury towards sukuna, the exact same kind of emotional reaction he had with mahito), and then looking back on this, i just wanna know more about yuji's internal thoughts and backstory more than anything now
Cause for a main character there are surprisingly little we know of him as a person
