"rock music is dead :("
"subculture is dead :((("
"the scene is dead :((((("
stfu and go to local shows. go see the local bands in your town or city or the next city over that are comprised of a bunch of fourteen-year-olds who just listened to Blink 182 for the first time. go see the gen-z scene girls who wish they had been born two decades earlier cover paramore on a tiny stage. go see the local metalhead teenagers ripoff every numetal band in existence. door cover will be like 10$ max, get a drink and buy a t-shirt and support your local scene. chat to the bands after their set, tell them they were great (even if they weren't). buy people's zines, listen to local bands on spotify, start your own shitty garage band. the scene is dead only if your participation in it is.

Great night out seeing my niece鈥檚 band (she鈥檚 the bassist) with the Hot Wife & my in-laws. Seriously proud of her, the band, and the two opening bands. All teenagers who played a mix of good original songs and covers.

Sappy appreciation post for local punk shows
Even though I have to be acutely aware of my surroundings as to not get hurt, when I鈥檓 at local punk shows I feel more safe and more accepted than anywhere else in the world. When you鈥檙e at a big stadium concert, everyone鈥檚 there for different reasons. Some people really love the artist, some people are just going bc they have nothing better to do. There鈥檚 always someone that鈥檚 singing too loud, or talking too much, or getting way too into your personal space. But punk shows are different. Everyone is there for the love of the game, for the energy. Friendly violence is encouraged, everyone knows what the deal is. And no one cares how you鈥檙e dancing, because everyone looks kinda ridiculous. No one is weird when everyone鈥檚 a weirdo. There鈥檚 a sense of camaraderie that I don鈥檛 think you can find anywhere else. There鈥檚 no separation between the band and crowd most of the time, ppl are encouraged to sing into the mic. It鈥檚 really like nothing I鈥檝e ever seen before.
The scene as a whole, but my local scene especially, is full of trans people. I know as a trans person that I don鈥檛 have to be afraid when I鈥檓 in the bathroom during a show bc, chances are, the person next to me is also of the transgender variety. There鈥檚 a number of transgender women in the scene who sing in deep screaming voices, and they鈥檙e still respected as women no questions asked. Punks accept you as you are.
Going into shows, I expect that I鈥檒l probably get hit when I鈥檓 near the pit. And often times I do. But when people who are moshing are able to see me, a physically disabled person with my walker, they almost always make a concerted effort to avoid ramming into me. I鈥檝e had a number of complete strangers step in front of me to shield me from people ramming into me, complete strangers protecting me so that I could enjoy the show.
I鈥檓 not saying that punk shows are always perfectly harmonious, careless people and people with bad intentions are definitely out there. But I鈥檝e found that the social barriers that so often rule our lives are completely torn down at shows. I love this scene and I feel lucky to be a part of it.

prefacing this with I'm not necessarily punk, but I like customizing my clothes. and i wanna help other people find stuff for battle jackets! (and other stuff) I'm not the authority on this, but I still want to give my two cents!! also don't expect much more to this, my profile is pure cringe.
If anyone is starting out and I can help, I'd like too!!
The spike/stud dilemma
one of the biggest issues i've noticed is "where do I find studs/spikes without fast fashion??" which is totally fair. something like that shouldn't have to be a minefield. obviously if you buy from a small business that re-sells them from aliexpress you're still indirectly supporting aliexpress.
im sure there ARE slow fashion alternatives and if anyone knows some please let me know so I can add it!!
BUT here's what I'd recommend.
-goodwill bins, sometimes they have old clothes or broken belts, very rare though. also any thrift store or reclaimed craft store.
-Local businesses, sex shops
-metal paper fasteners
-borrowing. it's inevitable, I know. JOANNs is definitely the best selection imo, but Hobby Lobby is better to steal from. Because They are Terrible. Michael's is OK but less selection usually. They use peal off tags usually which are easy to remove.
-also if you're feeling extra insane, hot topic uses mainly ink tags, which can be removed with heat (look up tutorials on) or just cut off a stud/spike belt. their studs are pretty easy to remove. same with bracelets, they break a lot. ofc it depends on the place whether they use beep beep tags.
-ask people for broken shit!
TEXTILES (the easy part)
-fabric samples are easy to find for free online. get whatever colors you want, i usually stick to black, white, grey and 1-3 other colors. they're usually pretty small so order around until you find the right size. you want cotton and linen, usually upholstery if you're painting on them. if you're not or you're ok working with leather, leather is easy to find too. A lot of companies mentioned how stretchy your material is something not stretchy most cases.
-FACEBOOK!! A.K.A the boomer method. This is where I got almost all of mine!! I recommend downloading FREEBIE as well! I got mine thru that, it links to facebook, nextdoor, and so on. Ofc you can pay for them- but you don't have to! I have lifetime supply of textiles basically bc of this. A lot of people get them for hobbies or work.
-the goodwill bins!!!! you can absolutely find fabric there, it's pretty common actually
-you don't need to steal this tbh it's easy to find second hand and less wasteful
PAINTING
-Facebook, goodwill, or reclaimed/used craft stores if you have them
-borrowing (same places)
-use something like Painter Eye (AR tracing app) and draw out any complex band logos etc.
-you can also use sharpies or whatever nobody's stopping you
Other stuff
-one of the best ways to find stuff is just GO FOR A WALK! Find little shiny objects!
-hardware stores are good so are army surplus
