one of the most surprising part of finally joining the batman fandom was reading older comics and finding out that this guy wasn’t an abusive monster (at least in most comic runs) but was just some obviously mentally ill suicidal guy who’s continuously indulged and even manipulated (sometimes) by his closest friends and remaining family to jump off of buildings and sob to the ptsd induced hallucinations of his dead parents and kids he glimpses in the mirror

this is an alfred hatepost lowkey. like alfreds whole reasoning was ‘well I just wasn’t ready to be a father (i abandoned one kid already it really wouldn’t be difficult to do it again) and bruce was sooo hard to deal with 🥺 (i don’t even parent him in any meaningful way)’

Alfred is literally like “hmm schizophrenic 14 year old child. lets let him go talk and train with assassins and murderer detectives to figure out his ‘true self’ since he very obviously doesn’t want the nonexistent encouragement and help I’ve totally been giving. I’ll even pack his suitcases because THAT couldn’t send any wrong ideas to the kid I repeatedly tell to grow up and learn about life.” and he expects him to come back to Alfred’s expectation of ‘normal’???

don’t even get me started with his whole ‘indulging the continuous cycle of robins’ thing. Bruce is like “wow let’s get this kiddo to a foster home with emotionally stable people who can properly raise him” while Alfred is already picking out the fabrics to sew the robin costumes. like worstie you started the cycle of emotional unavailability and crappy parenting!!!!! you (and a lot of people in the fandom included) can’t keep blaming that on just Bruce forever!!!

Basic plot summary and some cool info below:

"How's a Hero" is a fic I've been working on since..... idk 6 months, maybe

It's basically my (affectionate) 'I don't care' to conforming to popular fandom headcanons and going insane

(It's a horror fic. It's quite literally a horror Rayman fic where Rayman's a stubborn bitch to everyone)

Inspired to finally finish it after that one Tumblr post I saw that I can't find anymore. I think this fandom does deserve a proper 'horror' fic

Have I ever written a scary story before? No but it's not to late to throw stuff at the wall

Enough about me. What is this fic?

The basic plot finds Rayman struggling to grasp that the Glade isn't reliant on ONLY him. He has friends that'll help him and he's not taking it so well.

It goes into psychological stuff like guilt, denial, refusal for help, those things

I'm not very good at naming the tropes actually who said I should be a writer???

This story is definitely out of my comfort zone with heavy themes, fight scenes, and more 'mature' things. So if it sounds like I've never wrote anything like this, you're correct I apologize

Every new chapter I'll finish (hopefully) with have a drawing to go with it. At least, if I have the time and motivation uhhh

Belle I mean this with only respect and genuine love and apologies if it's upsetting: every time you go off about religion and start reinventing heresies, I am taking a frontrow seat and making notes like it's my first day of college. You understand me, all your thoughts are better-articulated versions of my own, I am your most devoted disciple. Religious trauma gang <3

It's not upsetting at all. (Except the part where you put yourself down, stop doing that >:[)It's incredibly validating to have others understand what I'm talking about. My heart goes out to all of us who are suffering under this. A big struggle I've had for decades and continue to have is actually calling it abuse because so many times I've been told "It's so hard to raise a child, your mother was only doing was she could!". But we were never difficult kids. We just wanted to be heard and have our voices be respected when we said "No, I don't want this life." We deserved that much. It wasn't our fault.

Another Biblical story I'm thinking a lot about lately is the one of Abraham and Isaac. Where god tells Abraham to sacrifice his only son and Abraham goes to do it without question. His child. The one he and his wife prayed for, for so long. Laying on that stone slab as his father raised the knife. Choosing his god over his flesh and blood because Abraham couldn't even conceive of disobeying him. Isaac must have grown up hearing that story. How he was so wanted and so precious only to end up on the sacrificial altar anyway because this faceless god demanded it and his father put more value into that than his love for his only son.

I don't think god talks to Abraham again after he sends the angel to stop him. Do you think Sarah ever knew? Did Isaac ever tell her what Abraham was willing to do? Would she have been horrified or was she too, lost to this state of mind. I don't know. It's two thirty in the morning and I'm thinking about the cycle of abuse.
