Just saw a lady on my fyp talking about “red flags she saw at a daycare center” and all of the comments are early education teachers roasting her 💀
#‘I want the daycare I go to have a requirement of taking the kids to the park’ k ma’am majority of these daycares are in cities-#like we have fenced in playgrounds/outdoor spaces for a reason#even one comment was like ‘I would not want my daycare bringing kids to a park’#and then she got upset that they didn’t like encourage math or learning to read#and like while we do let the kiddos look at books and of course they ask questions about words or what’s going on in the book#and we always read to them. it’s not developmentally appropriate for us to teach them to read. like even our preK teachers do SOME but-#nothing like the school system because it’s not appropriate#like her BABY isn’t even a toddler wtf are you on about#and I actually do math with my students (who are toddlers/early preschoolers)#no were not doing equations or learning how to add numbers together#however we are constantly counting. we are constantly sorting. we are constantly making patterns.#like I’m sorry you want your infant to do equations that’s not what we do in a daycare#find a nanny

How to Prepare for Competitive Exams
In modern times, achieving success in competitive examinations is quite challenging. Students work hard for many years to crack the exam attempt, but some get successful, and some do not. So, it is mandatory to strategize the studying schedule to be successful in the examinations. Learners and scholars must create effective smart-study methods and full-proof planning to get qualified for their competitive exams.
As examinations sometimes become difficult, students must create self-study plans that strengthen their abilities and imaginative skills. Nowadays, children are giving their best to clear the exam so that they get selected and move towards achieving their career goals. If you are a student and want to crack your exam in just the first attempt, follow the tips for competitive exam preparation. Let us look into some useful hacks to succeed in competitive exam attempts.
1) Understand the Exam Pattern
Students must understand the detailed curriculum of the examination and outline what type of questions are asked in the assessment.
They should check out sample papers of the respective subject to get an idea of the total number of questions asked per section.
Follow a timetable to develop a study plan that helps practice and revise exercises.
Solve previous year's papers and note mistakes to avoid repeating them.
The candidate should stick to the syllabus to understand the whole pattern of exams.
2) Pay Attention
Pay attention when teachers or instructors are trying to make something understandable.
Listen to peers and educators with full concentration when they try to give important details about a particular topic.
Make a habit of preparing notes while going through chapters.
Highlight the topics or headlines when teachers say this content is "very important".
Do not skip homework as it helps students to reinforce the concept done in the class.

3) Write Clearly and Carefully.
Always make neat and clear notes, so you don't get confused when you study that part again.
Write in clear handwriting to avoid a mess in notebooks and answer sheets, as good handwriting impresses the examiner.
Before writing, carefully review the question paper and its instructions.
Divide long paragraphs into short-meaningful paragraphs and leave space after every answer to create a good impression on the examiner.
Make sure to illustrate your answers with flowcharts and well-labelled diagrams.
After attempting the questions, cross-check all the answers to avoid silly mistakes
4) Make a Good Strategy
The students need to know which subject to study and which topics are important.
Focus on the practicals along with the theoretical part to strengthen your preparation.
Start early and focus on the topics that need more attention to reduce stress levels.
Keep yourself calm and healthy to give your best in exams.
Take a break, look after your health, and try to find time to do exercise that makes your mind peaceful.
5) Take help from eLearning platforms.
Many eLearning portals conduct mock and practice paper tests that help students prepare for their exams.
It provides a suitable medium for education in modern times via video animations, infographics, text, short clips, etc.
The platform is very helpful in organizing quizzes and smart eNotes that genuinely help thousands of learners during their examinations.
Online portals evaluate students' performance by offering a productive learning environment.

"Study24hr.com" gives a prime benefit of online learning that ensures students synchronize with modern learners and experts.
With the help of "study24hr.com" advanced learning and teaching tools, students can improve their academic performance.
6) Always Be Positive and Maintain Self Confidence
To achieve your targeted goals, it is very important to be self-confident. If you don't have enough confidence in yourself, it might create problems and issues.
Have faith in your own will that you can achieve anything in life.
Working hard, maintaining confidence, and never giving up are the main elements in boosting future goals.
Trust in your inner self and keep good and positive thoughts in your mind to stay motivated in the long run.
Always remember that there are potentials and hidden strengths within you that effectively convert your hard attempts into success.
7) Revision
Revision is the most crucial cog for preparing for your competitive exam.
After completing your course, go through the important notes and topics to remind yourself what you have learned in previous days.
Give mock tests as many as possible regularly that enhance your speed and accuracy.
Active revision techniques allow students to practice summarising the information that identifies the gap in learning.
In addition, one-time revision is not enough to crack any competitive exam, so learners must revise the important points systematically.
8) Evaluate Yourself
Evaluating students from time to time is essential for effective exam preparations.
Thousand of online education portals avail previous year question papers where you can evaluate yourself and find your stand.
While attempting a sample paper, imagine yourself in the examination hall and keep proper track of time without having breaks in between.
After solving the paper, analyze the test and revise the topics you have not done correctly.
Conclusion
Competitive exams are all about proper execution and nothing else. As this article introduced so many tips and hacks to students, it might be useful. Learners who study with sincerity and concentration can achieve everything in their lives.
So, if you want to get qualified for your exam, start working hard towards your goal. Don't get demotivated, even if you fail in any attempts, because failing doesn't mean stopping. Rather, it refers to carrying forward with more dedication and hard work. Always motivate yourself to concentrate on your studies and achieve your targeted goals. Hence, follow the strategies mentioned above to crack the toughest exam in just one go!

Create Unique Spiral Beanies with Simple Techniques
I love to crochet hats for two reasons. They are fast and, for the most part, only use one skein of yarn. Keep in mind the larger the hook and thicker the yarn, the faster it will work up. This makes hats an ideal item for craft fairs and online shops. There’s a lot of room for creativity too. Colors, shape, design and embellishments all combine to make a unique project with a lot of…

Goddammit I miss that cat.
#my wife's cat Prince died of cancer in March#he was so fucking ornery and particular about everything; he was named because of his regal look but he acted like a spoiled prince too#the kind of beautiful super fuzzy cat that didn't like anyone but their owner and was just plain mean to anyone but them#in a way that just tormented your soul because if you could just get that cat to somehow tolerate you.....#..... it might mean you were incredibly special#i mean i know that sounds dumb but that was the feeling. that became a minor goal in life to everyone who met him#he wasn't special otherwise by any means#she swears he was very human like but no I've raised 40+ cats in my life (17 of them live with me now)#he was a normal cat he was just very very beautiful and very spoiled and#if you spend enough time with any mammal you both learn each others patterns and that is a bonding experience for both so i get it#he got squamos cell carcinoma so far back on his tongue that they couldn't even operate on it#and like I said I've raised 40+ cats as well as dogs and birds‚ death is a part of pet ownership I've accepted that‚ I'm very okay with it#but I spent more money on three different specialists trying to treat him.....#.....than i have ever spent combined on every other cat I've owned for the last 25 years#and that's not admitting I don't take my cats to the vet#every cat I have ever owned gets neutered/spayed‚ vaccinated‚ and flea meds at the MINIMUM#it's admitting I spent more money treating him than some people spend on student loans#and i mean most of it was because as strongly as I felt for him I knew she felt a trillion times stronger#there was nothing she wouldn't have done for him#i think my heart broke the worst when we were putting him down and she sobbed 'how am i going to live without you' like i was a stranger#she would have easily plunged a knife in my gut if she was certain it would save his life#i can't fathom feeling that strongly for a pet and yet I'm quietly crying in my truck because i miss his stupid face#though now that i typed it all out maybe the truth is.................. you know what nevermind#will probably delete this tomorrow who tf knows#op#ranting

I would like to send a huge THANK YOU to everyone who has messaged me privately or replied to my tag rant to explain what the pattern abbreviations mean. Your responses have been far more enthusiastic and about ten thousand times more helpful than the usual replies I get when asking for knitting help, which have generally been either, "You can watch me do it, but I don't know how to teach it," or, "How are you even knitting like that? You're holding your needles wrong" (from people holding needles in various ways that instantly make my hands cramp). I really do appreciate the help, and patterns are much less intimidating now!
However, I apparently need ultra-remedial knitting lessons before I'm allowed to use patterns, because a lot of the explanations use terms that I still can't define -- at least, in the context of knitting (you can apparently slip stitches in knitting! but this is entirely unrelated to slip stitching! A knowledge of sewing is in no way an advantage here! 😅).
I can make rectangles like a boss. I have racked up close to a hundred feet of garter-stitched* scarves since I started knitting, but it's not false modesty when I say I know how to do literally nothing else. So I guess my next step is hunting up some baby-level knitting tutorials to find out exactly what I should have learned before actually attempting to make things.
For those of you who invited me to hit you up when I have questions (additional thanks x10), I will do so once I know the right terms to use!
*someone once told me that's what the alternating rows on my scarves were called. I'm assuming they're right, but I no longer trust anything I thought I knew about knitting because until today I didn't know you were allowed to move loops back and forth between needles without doing anything to them, and apparently that's like a really basic thing you're supposed to know before you start knitting???
Novice sewing pattern: Cut out shapes. Line up the little triangles on the edges. Stitch edges together. We've also included step-by-step assembly instructions with illustrations.
Novice knitting pattern: yOU MUSt uNDerstANd thE SECret cOdE CO67 (73, 87, 93) BO44 (63, 76, 90) 28 (32, 34) slip first pw repeat 7x K to end *kl (pl) 42 * until 13" (13, 13, 15) join new at 30 pl for 17 rows ssk 27 k2tog mattress lengthwise BO and sacrifice a goat to the knitting gods. WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU WANT "INSTRUCTIONS," I JUST GAVE THEM TO YOU
#knitting#fiber arts#look i might be able to sew/embroider/dye/needlefelt/sculpt/laser cut/thermoform/vacuform/solder/mix custom metal alloys for gravity castin#and half a dozen other fabrication techniques#but right now knitting is making me feel like an unskilled idiot#they do say that anyone who teaches needs to try to learn something they're not skilled at from time to time#so they can understand what their students are experiencing when presented with unfamiliar material#and this definitely qualifies as something i'm not skilled at#so I guess there's some benefit to my floundering around in a pile of yarn?#anyway y'all have given me hope for eventually understanding patterns whenever I get to the point of understanding knitting 😅

How lock-in hurts design
Berliners: Otherland has added a second date (Jan 28) for my book-talk after the first one sold out - book now!
If you've ever read about design, you've probably encountered the idea of "paving the desire path." A "desire path" is an erosion path created by people departing from the official walkway and taking their own route. The story goes that smart campus planners don't fight the desire paths laid down by students; they pave them, formalizing the route that their constituents have voted for with their feet.
Desire paths aren't always great (Wikipedia notes that "desire paths sometimes cut through sensitive habitats and exclusion zones, threatening wildlife and park security"), but in the context of design, a desire path is a way that users communicate with designers, creating a feedback loop between those two groups. The designers make a product, the users use it in ways that surprise the designer, and the designer integrates all that into a new revision of the product.
This method is widely heralded as a means of "co-innovating" between users and companies. Designers who practice the method are lauded for their humility, their willingness to learn from their users. Tech history is strewn with examples of successful paved desire-paths.
Take John Deere. While today the company is notorious for its war on its customers (via its opposition to right to repair), Deere was once a leader in co-innovation, dispatching roving field engineers to visit farms and learn how farmers had modified their tractors. The best of these modifications would then be worked into the next round of tractor designs, in a virtuous cycle:
https://securityledger.com/2019/03/opinion-my-grandfathers-john-deere-would-support-our-right-to-repair/
But this pattern is even more pronounced in the digital world, because it's much easier to update a digital service than it is to update all the tractors in the field, especially if that service is cloud-based, meaning you can modify the back-end everyone is instantly updated. The most celebrated example of this co-creation is Twitter, whose users created a host of its core features.
Retweets, for example, were a user creation. Users who saw something they liked on the service would type "RT" and paste the text and the link into a new tweet composition window. Same for quote-tweets: users copied the URL for a tweet and pasted it in below their own commentary. Twitter designers observed this user innovation and formalized it, turning it into part of Twitter's core feature-set.
Companies are obsessed with discovering digital desire paths. They pay fortunes for analytics software to produce maps of how their users interact with their services, run focus groups, even embed sneaky screen-recording software into their web-pages:
https://www.wired.com/story/the-dark-side-of-replay-sessions-that-record-your-every-move-online/
This relentless surveillance of users is pursued in the name of making things better for them: let us spy on you and we'll figure out where your pain-points and friction are coming from, and remove those. We all win!
But this impulse is a world apart from the humility and respect implied by co-innovation. The constant, nonconsensual observation of users has more to do with controlling users than learning from them.
That is, after all, the ethos of modern technology: the more control a company can exert over its users ,the more value it can transfer from those users to its shareholders. That's the key to enshittification, the ubiquitous platform decay that has degraded virtually all the technology we use, making it worse every day:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/02/19/twiddler/
When you are seeking to control users, the desire paths they create are all too frequently a means to wrestling control back from you. Take advertising: every time a service makes its ads more obnoxious and invasive, it creates an incentive for its users to search for "how do I install an ad-blocker":
https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2019/07/adblocking-how-about-nah
More than half of all web-users have installed ad-blockers. It's the largest consumer boycott in human history:
https://doc.searls.com/2023/11/11/how-is-the-worlds-biggest-boycott-doing/
But zero app users have installed ad-blockers, because reverse-engineering an app requires that you bypass its encryption, triggering liability under Section 1201 of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. This law provides for a $500,000 fine and a 5-year prison sentence for "circumvention" of access controls:
https://pluralistic.net/2024/01/12/youre-holding-it-wrong/#if-dishwashers-were-iphones
Beyond that, modifying an app creates liability under copyright, trademark, patent, trade secrets, noncompete, nondisclosure and so on. It's what Jay Freeman calls "felony contempt of business model":
https://locusmag.com/2020/09/cory-doctorow-ip/
This is why services are so horny to drive you to install their app rather using their websites: they are trying to get you to do something that, given your druthers, you would prefer not to do. They want to force you to exit through the gift shop, you want to carve a desire path straight to the parking lot. Apps let them mobilize the law to literally criminalize those desire paths.
An app is just a web-page wrapped in enough IP to make it a felony to block ads in it (or do anything else that wrestles value back from a company). Apps are web-pages where everything not forbidden is mandatory.
Seen in this light, an app is a way to wage war on desire paths, to abandon the cooperative model for co-innovation in favor of the adversarial model of user control and extraction.
Corporate apologists like to claim that the proliferation of apps proves that users like them. Neoliberal economists love the idea that business as usual represents a "revealed preference." This is an intellectually unserious tautology: "you do this, so you must like it":
https://boingboing.net/2024/01/22/hp-ceo-says-customers-are-a-bad-investment-unless-they-can-be-made-to-buy-companys-drm-ink-cartridges.html
Calling an action where no alternatives are permissible a "preference" or a "choice" is a cheap trick – especially when considered against the "preferences" that reveal themselves when a real choice is possible. Take commercial surveillance: when Apple gave Ios users a choice about being spied on – a one-click opt of of app-based surveillance – 96% of users choice no spying:
https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2021/05/96-of-us-users-opt-out-of-app-tracking-in-ios-14-5-analytics-find/
But then Apple started spying on those very same users that had opted out of spying by Facebook and other Apple competitors:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/11/14/luxury-surveillance/#liar-liar
Neoclassical economists aren't just obsessed with revealed preferences – they also love to bandy about the idea of "moral hazard": economic arrangements that tempt people to be dishonest. This is typically applied to the public ("consumers" in the contemptuous parlance of econospeak). But apps are pure moral hazard – for corporations. The ability to prohibit desire paths – and literally imprison rivals who help your users thwart those prohibitions – is too tempting for companies to resist.
The fact that the majority of web users block ads reveals a strong preference for not being spied on ("users just want relevant ads" is such an obvious lie that doesn't merit any serious discussion):
https://www.iccl.ie/news/82-of-the-irish-public-wants-big-techs-toxic-algorithms-switched-off/
Giant companies attained their scale by learning from their users, not by thwarting them. The person using technology always knows something about what they need to do and how they want to do it that the designers can never anticipate. This is especially true of people who are unlike those designers – people who live on the other side of the world, or the other side of the economic divide, or whose bodies don't work the way that the designers' bodies do:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/10/20/benevolent-dictators/#felony-contempt-of-business-model
Apps – and other technologies that are locked down so their users can be locked in – are the height of technological arrogance. They embody a belief that users are to be told, not heard. If a user wants to do something that the designer didn't anticipate, that's the user's fault:
https://www.wired.com/2010/06/iphone-4-holding-it-wrong/
Corporate enthusiasm for prohibiting you from reconfiguring the tools you use to suit your needs is a declaration of the end of history. "Sure," John Deere execs say, "we once learned from farmers by observing how they modified their tractors. But today's farmers are so much stupider and we are so much smarter that we have nothing to learn from them anymore."
Spying on your users to control them is a poor substitute asking your users their permission to learn from them. Without technological self-determination, preferences can't be revealed. Without the right to seize the means of computation, the desire paths never emerge, leaving designers in the dark about what users really want.
Our policymakers swear loyalty to "innovation" but when corporations ask for the right to decide who can innovate and how, they fall all over themselves to create laws that let companies punish users for the crime of contempt of business-model.

At a higher writing level, parsing the quote for the reader may not be necessary or appropriate, but in a high school or lower-level university context, it's about forcing the student to establish (1) what they think the relevant information in the quote is and (2) that they understand the quote in the first place rather than merely having identified a few keywords. Students absolutely pick quotes they don't understand or that have no actual relevance to the point they're ostensibly trying to make. Making them restate it in their own words often helps them realize they need a different quote!
More generally, parsing the quote for the reader often makes up for a lack of context on the reader's part. The meaning of a single line of poetry or Shakespeare is frequently not obvious unless you've read the rest of the poem or seen the rest of the play. A single key line from a dense literary novel or a political polemic translated from German nearly two hundred years ago might not make much sense unless you know how the author has been leading up to it.
Putting the quote's meaning into the essay writer's language rather than the source author's language will typically also make for a smoother transition into the essay writer's analysis.
PSA to anyone writing an essay at ANY level:
please, for the love of god, integrate your quotes properly. don't just drop them in the middle of nowhere D:
it's very easy:
Step 1: Introduce the Author of the Quotation (Who/where is it from) Step 2: State the Quotation (the quote) Step 3: Summarize the Quotation (paraphrase it) Step 4: Analyze the Quotation (Break down the meaning) Step 5: State the Quotation’s Relevance to Your Argument (Why did you just share this quote how is it related to your essay?)
Here's another example:
After talking with Cherry, a girl from the opposing group, Ponyboy, the main character in The Outsiders, by S.E Hinton, observes, "Maybe the two different worlds we lived in weren't so different. We saw the same sunset" (Hinton, 78). In other words, after talking, they realized they had more things in common than they thought. This shows that one of the reasons the two groups keep fighting is that they don't really ever communicate with each other. This is a reflection of our society today, where people discriminate against each other based on stereotypes, without actually ever communicating with each other.
Its an easy formula to follow and literally makes your writing sound so much clearer PLEASE just DO it and SAVE THE EYES of your teachers today
- sincerely a teacher who is TIRED OF SEEING quotes that have been parachuted into a sentence and no one knows who said it or why you added it in your paper PLEASE we want to give you good grades help us out 😭😭😭

I think you're right that it's significant, and I think Mori is clever to recognize that Akutagawa is a rook.
Like a rook, Akutagawa is powerful, but generally contained and often undercut by his predictability. However, because he's keenly aware of his own constraints, and because others often aren't (especially regarding variables they've internalized as known), he's able to play into and against his own predictability to paradoxically surprise them.
He moves within the confines of his rigidity to shape outcomes, sometimes more effectively than his more dynamic opponents and peers. Rooks do that too, if you let them.
Me, knowing nothing about chess, probably overthinking the significance of referencing akutagawa in this scene, but is going to look it up later anyways
#i have very specific chess feelings and thoughts re: rooks (which is what that piece is)#because in elementary school i was in a program for intellectually gifted students - by which i do NOT mean an honors program#i mean i displayed several specific neuro characteristics and struggled in a classroom environment such that i was referred for screening#the results of the screening flagged me for several additional tests and my results on those tests then prompted a comprehensive assessment#which was conducted by a licensed examiner who additionally administered another test chosen specifically based on my prior data#the report from which triggered a review of all of the above data by a panel of specialists who determined that I was wired so atypically#that I required specifically designed support services to avoid an adverse impact my access to education#ie I was not considered academically gifted which is what people are usually thinking of when they talk about giftedness (esp on tumblr)#i prefaced with all of that to counter misconceptions and emphasize that i was not in a program for smart and highly successful students#i was in a program for students with distinct cognitive processing needs that could not be met without specialized intervention#but inanely and entirely b/c of misconceptions the administrators at my school forcibly registered us in an annual chess tournament#which they wouldn't let us opt out of b/c there was a funding incentive for the school if we advanced far enough#ironically chess is a bad fit for this type of giftedness b/c it's rote + relies on bounded conventions instead of creative problem solving#but anyway i did not want to fucking play chess especially not competitively - it's boring and gets redundant#so i intentionally threw all of my games to remove myself from the tournament early#except my fellow indentured chess competitors noticed i was doing that and they were also bored and didn't care for the tournament#and so several of them made a game out of forcibly advancing me as far as they could by outmaneuvering my attempts to lose#horrifically they managed to corner me into winning enough that i was in serious danger of advancing#and so i started AGGRESSIVELY practicing chess in my spare time to learn how to shape the board and get confident in my ability to do so#i played against computers and then strangers online for hours a day and i studied checkmate patterns and how to subvert + reconfigure them#all so i could play well enough to ensure i'd lose even when being actively sabotaged#it worked - i narrowly escaped advancing that year and I don't think they were able to lose to me again after that#they kept trying - even playing me outside of tournaments to try and figure out how i was consistently losing#it's b/c i layered multiple strategies that involved breaking select conventions + manipulating their focus and psychology#BUT the fulcrum of my approach relied heavily on my rooks and select pawns as my most valuable pieces#i got very good at using rooks to shape the board without placing them in a position to be captured until i wanted them to be#once i had a few pawns close to promotion i would shift my rooks into bait b/c once one was taken i could just promote a pawn into a rook#and because absent a potential stalemate people almost always promote pawns into queens#my opponent would forget my additional rooks and would make choices based on the implicit assumptions that my deputized pawns were queens#rooks are treasures
