[The miller, cont.] “ ‘He’s often away from home. And look at the outlandish folk that visit him: dwarves coming at night, and that old wandering conjuror, Gandalf, and all. You can say what you like, Gaffer, but Bag End’s a queer place, and its folk are queerer.’ “ ~ The Fellowship of the Ring, A Long-expected Party (Art: “Unexpected Guests Arriving 2” by jao666 on DeviantArt)

Yall have no idea how much I love this fanfic. Almost tempted to learn how to bind books so I can print it out and keep it.
I have read real published books that were nowhere near as good as this damn fic! Now I keep trying to find the ‘strange visitors’ shaped fic I am craving in the Charthur tag on ao3. I’m trying to write my own now! Ekkk fuckin love this story.

last book + last stethoscope, part 37

This is my Littmann teaching scope with Nana Visitor's Open a Channel: A Woman's Trek, released just last month. Nana Visitor played Major Kira Nerys, the Bajoran second-in-command on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. For this memoir/investigative journalism piece/coffee table book, Visitor interviewed hundreds of actors, writers, producers, and celebrity fans and offered her own insight into the treatment and portrayal of women in the franchise as well as Hollywood in general in the last sixty years. Nichelle Nichols famously had to be persuaded by none other than Martin Luther King, Jr. to continue her role as Uhura in the original Star Trek series, discouraged by how the writers had limited her character. Thankfully, she stayed on, as countless women would be inspired by her performance. This fell short of being a perfect read for me because there were some actors I really wanted to hear from--Michelle Yeoh, Dawnn Lewis, and Jennifer Lien, to name a few, but Visitor was unable to interview them and had to rely on secondary sources. In the case of Jennifer Lien, her press appearances happened so seldom that Visitor could really only talk about her character from Voyager, Kes. A warning: there is a section in which Visitor discusses, in graphic detail, the incident when she was kidnapped and raped when leaving the set. It leads to a discussion of what it means to be a woman in a man's world and I understood why she included it, but it was a difficult read to say the least. Star Trek fans who want to read the book but would rather be spared reading about violence might want to skip the section about Visitor/Kira Nerys.

Anson Mount at Star Trek: Las Vegas convention 2023
Pictures and fun Twitter reactions of Anson being at STLV 2023 promoting Star Trek: Strange New Worlds alongside fellow cast members, August 4 2023.
The lines at his autograph table are reportedly huge! A fan posted a video of the waiting line and wrote on Twitter: "If you want an idea of the most popular #StarTrek show and cast at the moment, this was the line for an Anson Mount autograph today at #STLV. By far the longest."
Anson will be doing more autographs and photo-ops over the weekend! Judging by the photo session pictures taken with fans, he is wearing a Captain Pike inspired belt buckle, with the likeness of Captain Pike actor Jeffrey Hunter from Star Trek: The Original Series. :)

Batman/Superman: World’s Finest Vol. 2: Strange Visitor
I’ve read a ton of graphic novels over the last year and change after not having read many for most of my life. Dan Mora’s art in World’s Finest has been my favorite I’ve seen. It doesn’t hurt that Dick and Clark are my two favorite heroes, but I’ve read plenty of other stories starring them and the art hasn’t moved me the way Mora’s has.
I can’t quite put my finger on exactly what about his style makes such an impression on me. I think he’s found a way to perfectly strike the balance of humanity and mythology that DC is built on, especially with Superman.
So far, all my graphic novel reading choices have been based on characters I most care about. I’ve also put a couple on my TBR based on writers I’ve enjoyed. Mora might be the first artist to force me to seek out his work regardless of the story or characters, just so I can see his illustrations.
Can’t wait for more of the World’s Finest run to be put in collected volumes, especially the Teen Titans run so I can see Dick’s arc in that!

Leslie Fish & The DeHorn Crew - Thoughts on Strange Visitors
What manner of men are these who fly so free? Not bound to any planet's rules, Not tied to flocks and herding tools, Not serving country-minded fools— Not chained to dust, like me!
What manner of men are these, well-known to stars? Not limited to one tribe's lands, Not fed by any one tribe's hands. The mountains where my border stands Confine like prison bars!
What manner of men are these who stand alone? In all they do or say to me, The echo of the stars they see Confirms that one could be that free— It gnaws me to the bone!
What manner of men are these? I need to know! They fill my dreams with wondrous things, They give my soul impatient wings, They show me where their freedom springs— And I am called to go!

⛈ :3
It's been pouring down with rain for hours, the occasional crash of thunder almost shaking the house. Every few moments it sounds like the rain gets heavier and seems like it's going to break through the windows with how heavy it is.
It's hard to find Ollie when the weather is this bad.
They're not on the ceiling or in one of the attics; it feels too unsafe. They're not in any of their nests, they aren't in the bathroom or the kitchen.
They're in the cupboard under the stairs, shaking as they almost seem to hide in their tentacles, covered almost entirely by the appendages.
