It Hits Different This Time
Angst, Hurt/Comfort, Rock Star Eddie Munson x Steve Harrington
Part One / Part Two / Part Three / Part Four / Part Five
“Steve.”
He hears Robin knocking on the door, her knuckles tapping firmly against the wood.
“STEVE.”
He’s lying on the bed in Robin’s guest bedroom, limbs starfished across the plush gray comforter, staring at the ceiling fan. Taylor Swift is singing to him, blasting from the Alexa speaker next to him.
Oh my, love is a lie, shit my friends say to get me by
“Alexa, volume up.”
“Steve – STEVE!”
It hits different, it hits different this time
“Alexa, off,” Robin says as she marches into the room. Taylor’s voice cuts off almost immediately and Steve huffs, frustrated.
“Steve, as much as I love listening to your ‘Sad Taylor Swift’ playlist, you need to eat something. Go for a walk. Take a shower.”
“I’d rather not.”
Sighing, Robin kicks his left leg until he’s made enough room for her to collapse down beside him and gaze up at the spinning fan.
“Do you want to talk about it?”
“No.”
They lay in silence.
“It’s just – our three-year anniversary, Robin.”
“I know.”
“He didn’t even text me.”
“I know.”
“And the supermodels at the club! And the tweets!”
“I know, Steve.”
There’s moisture pricking at the inside of his eyes now. “I just – it’s dumb, okay? I thought we could make this work. But I guess I’m not as important to him as he is to me.”
“Dingus,” Robin chides, and he turns his face away so she can’t see that he’s actually crying now. (She still probably knows that he is; Robin always knows. He just doesn’t want anyone to see.) “Okay, is Eddie Munson a huge idiot? Yes, and he has been for as long as we’ve known him. Is he kind of an asshole now that he’s famous? Yes. Do I think this is the end? Not necessarily.”
Steve snorts. “It’s been four days, Robin. Nothing for four days. I think it’s already ended.”
Robin cuddles up to his side so now they’re legitimately snuggling together. “Look, all I’m saying is he’s going to be back in the state in a few days and I think you owe it yourself to at least have a conversation with him. Either you two decide to work things out and start communicating better or you decide that he’s not pulling his weight to make his relationship work and you get closure. Either way, I think you need to talk to him.”
“Yeah,” Steve sniffles. “You’re probably right.”
“Steven, I’m always right.”
“I’m sorry, do you want to talk about the Pixar question you fumbled on trivia night?”
“Dingus, I swear to god if you don’t let it go - ”
/////
Eddie’s groggy and nauseous and fuck the sun is too bright. He pulls at the window-shades as he stumbles into their kitchen, dropping his Louis Vuitton bag on the floor. The fact that he’s managing to walk while coming down from a five day bender that he barely fucking remembers is kind of a miracle.
“Steve! Stevie, baby, I’m home!”
Silence.
What day is it today, Saturday? He’s probably at the farmer’s market with Robin. Eddie’s a few days early anyways, wanted it to be a surprise. And honestly, it’s probably a good thing Steve’s not home, Eddie needs to keep sobering up.
He pulls a fresh bottle of water out of the fridge and collapses onto the restored dining-room chairs they bought a few months ago. He tips it back and drinks it down greedily, swallowing the cool water down his aching throat. “Oh, that’s good,” he moans to himself, dropping the now empty bottle onto the dining room table.
The empty bottle that clangs against something. Squinting, Eddie opens his eyes and looks down.
There’s a small box sitting at his spot, a card laying haphazardly onto the side. It looks like someone opened it and scribbled all over what they originally wrote.
Eddie frowns and grabs for the card. It’s Steve’s writing. Whatever he’s crossed out is unreadable. Instead, all there is is the following:
I would say Happy Anniversary, but judging by the fact that (1) you didn’t return my call or even text me back and (2) the paps caught you at the club with the guys and a bunch of supermodels instead, I’m going to assume that you’re not interested in celebrating it anymore.
Eddie feels his stomach sink so fast that he’s going to lose all the water he just drank.
Look, Eds, I am so proud of you for making your dream come true. I would never ask you to give that up or sacrifice your music for me. But I’m tired of feeling alone in this relationship. Of feeling like you don’t love me as much as I love you. Because I would do anything for you, but I think this all proves that you wouldn’t do the same for me.
Anyways, I still want you to have your gift. It wouldn’t make sense to give it to anyone else.
Your biggest fan, Steve
He can’t see straight and it’s not because of the drugs. He can’t breathe and it’s not because of his asthma or his wicked smoking habit.
He grabs the small box, flips it open, and chokes back a sob.
It’s a perfect replica of Aragorn’s ring, the ring he’s given that proves he is Isilduir’s heir. He’s wanted it foryears, but it was never something that he thought he could buy for himself. Sure, he could buy whatever random luxury shit without a sweat, but something so meaningful to him? Because reading The Lord of the Rings saved his fucking life in high school? His brain couldn’t deal with him buying it for himself. His therapist says it’s one of his many hang-ups regarding money and fame and his self-esteem issues, but that’s not what matters right now.
What matters is that Steve gave this to him, loved him enough to have it made for him.
And now Steve is gone.
Eddie grabs for his phone with shaking hands and checks the date.
“Fuck.”
Five days.
He’s five days too fucking late.
He’s dialing Jeff before he can even realize he’s doing it.
“Dude, I really don’t want to be talking to you right now.”
“Jeff,” Eddie barely gets out, his voice choking on a sob. “Steve is gone.”
Jeff’s silent for a moment.
“I’m on my way.”

Newsies Interview with Christian Bale for Seventeen Magazine, 1992
(transcript under the cut)
---
Cristian Bale lumbers into a conference room on a rainy Saturday morning. He plops down in a chair, yawns, and wipes sleep from his eyes. Dressed in black jeans, a sweatshirt, and sneakers, he apologizes for being late. "I'm just getting over the flu and I'm still jet-lagged," he explains, "so I'm moving a little slowly."
But the six-foot-two British-born actor, best known for his film debut as a young schoolboy in Steven Spielberg's epic Empire of the Sun and more recently for Kenneth Branagh's Henry V, need not apologize. For the past few weeks, he's been flying round and round from L.A. to London to Prague and back again.
"I've been doing reshoots for Newsies here, doing preproduction work on a new film, Swing Kids, in Prague, and visiting my mom, sister, and girlfriend in England. And I don't even like to fly!" he says with a slight shudder. "Before I came here, I flew on a plane that sounded like it had a window open the whole time."
When Bale heard about Newsies, a live-action musical recounting the tale of the New York newsboys' strike of 1899, he claims he had no interest in auditioning for the project. "I'd never sung or danced, and I didn't think I could do a musical," he says. "I read for the film in England, and then Disney flew me to Los Angeles for a screen test. But before I signed the contract, I meet with the director [Kenny Ortega] and told him I wasn't comfortable with the dancing and singing and I didn't want to be a bloody Artful Dodger in a remake of Oliver!, jumping down the street with a big smile on my face. But he told me it wouldn't be like that, and then he lied to me about all of these different actors who had done musicals, like Al Pacino."
After he was cast as Jack Kelly, the head Newsie, Bale joined the rest of the films actors and dancers in two months of "Newsies school." He studied singing, dancing, speaking with a Brooklyn accent (circa 1899), gymnastics, and karate. "We had a kung fu master," he recalls with a laugh. "Thirty of us would be standing in a room doing something like t'ai chi to this humming music. It's very relaxing, but when you see yourself in a mirror, it's really funny.
"Filming Newsies was a blast," he says. "By the time the cameras started rolling, we were so prepared we were ready for anything. The blend of technically great dancers and actors with great characterizations made it all work perfectly." And what about his Oliver! fear? "Sure, we're singing and dancing in the streets," he says, "but we don't always have smiles on our faces."
Immediately upon finishing Newsies, Bale flew up to Prague to begin Swing Kids, which costars Robert Sean Leonard and Frank Whaley. "It's set in 1930s Hamburg, Germany," the eighteen-year-old explains. "There was quite a big culture then among teenagers who liked to dress in zoot suits and go to swing clubs. The story is about three friends from different backgrounds who love swing music. I play the bad seed."
In between movies, Bale tries to squeeze in time with his family and girlfriend. "I've been going with the same girl for three years," he says shyly. "But she's going to a university in England and I'm relocating to Los Angeles, where my father lives. If I had nothing to do with the film industry, I'd stay in England, but Bournemouth [the city where he's lived for the past five years] isn't exactly the film capital of the world."
If he never made another movie, however, Bale says he wouldn't mind a noncelebrity life. "I love making movies," he concludes, "but I also love my privacy. If it all ended tomorrow, I'd just live by the sea and be perfectly happy."

Variety will present Tom Hiddleston with the Variety Virtuoso Award at the Miami Film Festival on Tuesday, April 9. The award will be for his career achievements across film, theater and television.
“From screens large and small to the Broadway stage, Tom Hiddleston is one of our most versatile and engaging actors,” said Jenelle Riley, Variety Focus Awards and Features Editor. “With Season 2 of ‘Loki,’ he brought a Shakespearean arc to a fan-favorite character, making us laugh and cry — sometimes simultaneously. No one that talented should also be that nice. Or that tall.”
“We couldn’t be more thrilled to be honoring actor Tom Hiddleston at the 41st edition of Miami Film Festival. Not only has he worked with incredible directors such as Steven Spielberg and Guillermo del Toro, but his phenomenal work from the stage to the screen has made a lasting impact on fans around the world,” said Lauren Cohen, Miami Film Festival Director of Programming. “His illustrious career and starring role in such an incredible franchise is something we could not be more delighted to honor. We’re so excited to be partnering with Variety to honor the talent and remarkable career of Tom Hiddleston.”
The festival will open with “Thelma,” directed by Josh Margolin and starring June Squibb, Fred Hechinger, and Parker Posey with director Josh Margolin and producer Zoë Worth in attendance. The Festival will close with “Ezra,” directed by Tony Goldwyn, who will be in attendance on Saturday, April 13, and will receive the Art of Light Award for directing. Alison Brie will also receive the Art of Light Award, and “Sing Sing” director Greg Kwedar will be honored with the Impact Award.
Hiddleston will join previously announced honoree Molly Ringwald (Variety Creative Vanguard Award) in the lineup. The festival will present three Marquee screenings for the films “Dear Jassi,” “Sing Sing” and “The Performance,” along with a centerpiece screening of “The Idea of You.” The 2024 Miami Film Festival will celebrate more than 180 feature narratives, documentaries, and short films of all genres, from over 31 countries worldwide, featuring 10 World premieres, 10 North American premieres, five U.S. premieres, and 11 east coast premieres, and 42 Florida premieres. Louis Tomlinson Gives Rockstar Performance At Forest Hills Stadium
August 03, 2023 | BY KYLE STEVENS
Photos Courtesy of Kyle Stevens
Fans at Forest Hills Stadium couldn’t help themselves when they got the opportunity to get up close and personal with singer and heartthrob Louis Tomlinson on Saturday, July 29. Andrew Cushin and Giant Rooks opened for Tomlinson with dynamic performances that set the tone for the rest of the evening.
The former One Direction star created quite the stir when he took the stage in Queens for the last stop on the current leg of his ‘Faith In The Future World Tour.’ Tomlinson made a grand entrance rocking a black tank top and stunner shades after the rain came drizzling down right before he was about to go on. Luckily, the weather cleared up just in time and the English songwriter proceeded to sing hits from his latest solo album that dropped back on November 11 last year.
Performing “High in California,” “She is a Beauty We Are World Class,” and “Out of My System,” Tomlinson had his passionate fan base holler and shriek throughout his entire set. Tomlinson’s magnetic energy made the atmosphere so sweltering that he had to pause in the middle of “All This Time” to help a fan who needed assistance in the crowd.
Staying true to his roots by not forgetting where he came from, Tomlinson also performed 1D megahits “Night Changes” and “Where Do Broken Hearts Go.” He also paid homage to English rock band Arctic Monkeys by singing the moody “505.” (The Arctic Monkeys will also roll through the area on September 8 and 9 for a highly anticipated tour of their own.)
Stacked Sandwich Shop (68-60 Austin St, Queens, NY 11375) made sure to keep the hungry stadium crowd properly nourished throughout the evening with delicious, jumbo-size Philly Cheesesteaks that had to be seen to be believed. Owner Danny Azzo was on hand with new menu items to feed into the excitement that Louis created.
“We recently introduced Mozzarella Sticks and Fries. It’s a hit,” Azzo said in an interview with the Queens Gazette. “We don’t do that in the shop because we traditionally make sandwiches, but that’s been really good for us, as is the cheesesteak. Our usual popular items include the Turkey Sandwiches.”
Before the night wrapped up, fans who were lucky enough to be near the barricade got the rare opportunity to touch their charismatic idol during the song “Silver Tongues.” Always a gentleman, Tomlinson happily greeted his supporters with a wide smile. Attendees in the front row lost control and proceeded to tear away at Tomlinson’s tank top in a frenzied scene that was reminiscent of the peak of Beatlemania during the 1960s.
Tomlinson proudly soaked up the moment like only a true rockstar could, and performed the rest of his concert shirtless. Unsurprisingly, fans in Queens were quite content with that particular parting visual. The “Bigger Than Me” singer will pick up his tour again on August 29 when he goes overseas to play at Barclays Arena in Hamburg, Germany. Tickets are on sale now for those who want to take an adventurous, fly away holiday.

Doctor Who 2024 series news
Tumblr media
New information about the eight episodes in the Doctor Who 2024 series is revealed in SFX magazine 378. We’ve included contextual information from what we know from other sources and filming reports.
Space Babies
Tumblr media
This episode picks up from the events that happen at the end of The Church on Ruby Road with Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson) entering the TARDIS for the first time. The Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) and Ruby land on a spaceship occupied by babies who are very talkative for their age, a scary slimy monster called the Bogeyman (Robert Strange) — and no adults to be found. Space Babies introduces the series story arc of both the Doctor and Ruby’s foundling mystery.
The Devil's Chord
Tumblr media
Ncuti Gatwa describes Maestro (Jinkx Monsoon) as “Such a delicious villain.” The Doctor and Ruby meet and chat with The Beatles in this episode set in 1963. Both Ncuti Gatwa and Millie Gibson will sing in the story. The large recording room at Abbey Road Studios was recreated as a set at Wolf Studios Wales.
Boom
Tumblr media
The Doctor and Ruby travel in the TARDIS to Ruby’s first alien planet — a war-torn world. The episode, written by Steven Moffat and described as “intense”, was filmed in chronological order with Ncuti Gatwa receiving praise for his performance from director Julie Anne Robinson.
73 Yards
Tumblr media
The TARDIS lands on the Welsh coast and Ruby must solve a mystery involving a Welsh horror folktale legend. The TARDIS scenes were genuinely filmed on the Welsh Cost in Pembrokeshire. Dame Siân Phillips co-stars with Aneurin Barnard and Jemma Redgrave. Filming reports reveal that Barnard plays a Welsh candidate named Roger Ap Gwilliam.
Dot and Bubble
Tumblr media
Gatwa and Gibson filmed their first Doctor Who scenes together on a pontoon inside entrance locks in Cardiff Bay Barrage for Dot and Bubble. The setting for Dot and Bubble is a colony with an out-of-control dangerous situation on an alien planet. Callie Cooke plays an influential person in the colony. The episode is described as very Black Mirror and touches on a real-world problem which will likely cause a good deal of discussion after the episode airs.
Rogue
Tumblr media
This episode was co-written Kate Herron and Briony Redman. Set in the Regency Era in 1813, Rogue, described by Davies as “a proper Bridgerton episode with dances and waltzes”, was filmed in three different manor houses. Psychic earrings allow the Doctor and Ruby to period dance with skill. Jonathan Groff and Indira Varma co-star. Varma plays the villainous Duchess of Pemberton — who is not what she seems.
The Legend of Ruby Sunday and Empire of Death
Tumblr media
These episodes, set on Earth, feature UNIT headquarters populated by Kate Stewart (Jemma Redgrave), Mel Bush (Bonnie Langford), Rose Noble (Yasmin Finney), Morris (Lenny Rush) and Colonel Ibrahim (Alexander Devrient). Russell T Davies calls this episode “shocking” and “The Most Devastating Finale.”
Doctor Who, starring Ncuti Gatwa and Millie Gibson returns on 11 May 2024 midnight, 00:00 BST (10 May 7:00pm ET) streaming on BBC iPlayer and Disney+ with Space Babies and The Devil’s Chord. Both episodes will broadcast on BBC One in the UK and Ireland on 11 May immediately before Eurovision. The remaining six episodes will stream at 00:00 BST on the six subsequent Saturdays.
-- So it looks like Jemma DID film with Ncuti, despite what she said in a recent interview. Which is as it should be - she can't be in New Who and NOT appear with the Doctor - that ain't right and proper! AND she's in three episodes this series (that we know of!). Huzzah!

My Emerald City Comic Con cosplans:
Thursday: Amity Blight (Her VA will be there, too!)
Tumblr media
I'm about finished with this costume, just need to put some finishing touches on my staff, sew a quick belt, and style the wig.
Friday: Stevonnie
Tumblr media
My hail-Mary costume- still gotta bust out a costume and two props for this one. Yes, I'm making the sword and shield. :3
There is a Steven Universe sing-a-long panel on the schedule for this day of the convention, and I super, SUPER hope more Steven Universe cosplayers show up to take photos with!
Saturday: Thirteenth Doctor (Getting photos with Jodie Whittaker!)
Tumblr media
I've since gotten new pants (more color accurate) for this costume- definitely the simplest and coziest cosplay I have lol. Street clothes cosplays are where it's at, sometimes.
Sunday: Champion's Tunic Link (BotW)
Tumblr media
Hoping to bring the bow! We'll see if ECCC security lets me in without snapping its string, ugh. (I don't see why they'd need to, it's not like the bow can bend at all without breaking)
_
Maybe I'll see some of you there! Looking forward to getting pics of cool cosplayers and finding folks dressed for the same fandoms I am!

Again, if two lie down together, they will keep warm; but how can one keep warm alone? And though one may be overpowered, two can resist. Moreover, a cord of three strands is not quickly broken. Ecclesiastes 4:9-12✝️ [5/07/2024]

Like every System Parts there’s always a reason, for their looks, names, ages, gender, se*uality it’s never random and connected to the body’s story thus far but for Us it’s probably because getting vulnerable just like in Moon Knight it represents having siblings, twins because for me my mom had a few miscarriage before and after me and one of them was my twin 🥹 so that’s probably why and also Oscar Isaac talks about in Saturday Night Live “They all deal with pain loss and confusion” 🧡

Got my DW magazines (including the latest where all those brainmelting quotes are coming from) and there really is so much loveliness in them, including a letter from RTD:
"The First Great Seismic Shift in Doctor Who was in 1966 when the lead character slumped to the floor and... what? He did what?! He changed into a different actor? For good?! Can you imagine that happening unannounced now? in 1966, there seems to be comparatively little record of the reaction. Did we question less, then? Did we just... watch?
I've got clearer memories of Seismic Shift 2, 1970, the move into colour. Though that didn't mean much; we didn't buy colour TVs overnight, I was still watching in black and white until, ooh, Planet of the Daleks...?"
[...]
Things happened, and we simply kept on watching. We might complain about today's online world, but aren't we wiser now? Less passive, more engaged?
[...]
You probably know the later Seismic Shifts. The return, in 2005. Steven Moffat's astonishing, brilliant, glittering Doctors from 2010 onwards, with the Master becoming Missy. And with a slinky Seismic Shuffle, the Eighth Doctor, who'd disappeared off screen in 1996, finally got to regenerate in 2013 but only on the BBC Red Button! And then Jodie Whittaker fell through the roof of a Sheffield-bound train with an impact so great, it bumped the entire show on to Sunday night, and then she stood up in the wreckage and smiled a smile so bright, it changed the Time Lord and television drama and the whole bloody culture for good and for better.
It really is the most fascinating show because it changes, changes, changes... and yet, it stays the same. 'Doctor Who is all about to change!' say the fans, but I sit here planning the next story in which a police box lands and the Doctor steps out and foils an invasion of Earth thinking to myself, well, is it? But I know what you mean. The feel of the show changes, the essence. Jo and the Doctor and that silver car are a different world, a different style, almost a different genre to Clara facing a Raven on Trap Street.
And now, in 2023, that high-wire-tension of approaching change is in the air. The Doctor mysteriously has a face he's had before. And by the time December rolls around, he'll have yet another new face, in a show that now drops worldwide on a vast streaming platform -- new and old at the same time, as it still stays cradled in its Saturday night home of the good old BBC.
But as I said. Voices are louder this year. Shouting and rage and horror sometimes circle around Doctor Who. And often, that's not about Doctor Who itself, it's expressing anger and fear about life, about love, about self. And I get that! These discussions are us, growing up. In the old days we'd sit in our bedroom and work out the world all on our own. We could only sing along to pop songs to express our lovely, lonely hearts. Now, we type it out, and that's always going to be clumsy. Because expressing yourself isn't easy. Even birthday cards are hard work! So trying to say what you think about life and love and sex and telly in the form of words typed on a page and read by strangers, oh, nightmare! No wonder it goes wrong. But now...
I think there's only one way to meet the changes to come.
With joy.
I'm not asking for good reviews (I've got myself for that, I think these episodes are FABULOUS!) But if you don't like the something, don't exhaust yourself. Just smile and be glad that some people are happy and wait for the next Seismic Shift to come.
Because this programme has trained us well! We have embraced flying cars and the Red Button and the Watcher and the Garm and hey, maybe 'granddaughter' is Gallifreyan for 'friend' (though I don't think so) which means we can delight in anything. And right now, the TARDIS is heading for Skaro, and a wounded spaceship is heading for London, and Shaun is taking an extra shift in his taxi cos he's short of money, and Sylvia is delivering a curry and Donna Noble's daughter needs to go shopping for eyes -- for eyes?! -- and as all these things converge, hold on tight, clutch those tins of beans, cos the next earthquake is rumbling away on the horizon.
Here we go again!

The Dollar Bin at 100
Tumblr media
It seems fitting that I should begin this, my 100th post in The Dollar Bin, with some heartfelt apologies.
Dear Wife,
I'm sorry my records are here, there and everywhere. But they are changing my life with a wave of... nevermind. I'm also sorry I cranked Empire Burlesque while you were doing yoga.
Dear Hipster Staff At My Record Store,
I'm sorry I consistently get your hopes up by amassing a fat stack of records that wind up costing just $16 total. When you hand me back all my new Bonnie Raitt and Mama Cass and say "have fun" with zero conviction I know that what you really mean is "you and your collection seriously suck mister." I hear you, hipster. I hear you.
Dear Famous Brother,
I'm sorry I copied your ass by writing a music blog, and I'm sorry my blog debases your entire professional field. I'm also sorry for occasionally schooling and lambasting you in print. Check that: I'm not sorry at all, broheim. I'm giggling.
Dear Stephen Stills,
I'm so sorry for all the mean things I have said about... forget it, I can't do it. Hey Stills: you still suck.
Dear Reader,
That's you! I'm sorry about all my typos and my complete lack of conciseness. I'm also sorry that Sandy Saturdays are often posted on Wednesdays, and that I almost only write about white people from 50 years ago. And yes, I acknowledge that I've written way more about Ringo more than any other Beatle. Way more. But I refuse to apologize for that fact.
Okay, now what?
I know:
Here's a handy guide, complete with links, for every silly thing I've written about in 100 posts.
I started this whole thing out of the blue last August by going on and on about a Joan Baez record no one else on earth currently listens to. Then I argued that Jerry Jeff Walker's voice cracks are high art. Clearly I had a target audience of about 15 people.
Even so, a few of my posts struck a bit of a chord, bringing in new readers like all of you - and I'm glad you are here! There was the time I explained how John Darnielle of The Mountain Goats taught me how to cook; people also liked when I shouted about the greatness that is The Roches. (My second piece on the Roches was a bit less of a smash, but oh well...).
Occasionally I've had some ideas to express. Listen to the Doors. Judy Collins rocks. Linda Ronstadt is the greatest artist in the Dollar Bin and sings pretty great backup. Gordon Lightfoot went electric. Emmylou Harris sings the best Jesus music. Steeleye Span did not ruin music; indeed they're often obscurely brilliant.
And sometimes I've just entertained myself by my writing about Dead Skunks in the middle of the road, Cat Stevens comedic skills or the links I contrived between Sandy Denny and Biz Markie.
There's also been some (silly and possibly inebriated) fury. Take the times when I laid waste to my famous brother's Dylan and Stephen Stills claims, or the days when I unleashed my wrath on Roger McGuinn, Graham Nash and Grace Slick.
Somehow Stephen Stills comes up quite a bit.
And yeah, I write a whole lot about Neil Young. I used his first, unappreciated record to introduce my whole Shakey Sundays project, then I moved on to trash The Monsanto Years, quibble with Peace Train, reclaim Living With War, scratch my head over Life, and shout about the glories of Ragged Glory on not just on one, but two, and then three different occasions. I also used Old Ways as a vehicle for describing some fairly reprehensible parenting on my part, considered The Shocking Pinks, quivered in the face of the greatness that is Odeon / Budokan, reported on Neil's current tour, compared Neil to my own father through Before and After, ignored him and focused instead on Richie Furray, had a mellow Sunday while listening to Comes a Time and screamed about Eldorado.
What's more, I complained about Young's attention to detail in Landing on Water, survived him on wacko safari in Earth, had fever dreams during a covid case, made big claims about After the Goldrush and discovered over two very different posts that I was grown up enough to finally appreciate Time Fades Away. The whole project is pretty never ending in that Young puts out a new record just about once a month and I've got a long way to go.
Sandy Denny has been my other major focus, and for good reason. After all, she should have had a hit in 67, is a lyrical equal to Dylan and Young, recorded some very sweet demos, scorned Pete Townsend, fronted her own band long before the public was ready for that level of feminist power, made the soundtrack for a movie no one has ever seen, provided parents with a I-love-you-now-go-to-sleep anthem, backed up Richard Thompson on the song that should be featured in all graduations, showed off her pop music pipes, is impossible to find performing live on the internet, and had her songs mangled by Fairport Convention except when she was making improved, vastly improved and then perfect music with them, even when it was about meat products left out in nature.
Then we had World Party week with one, two, three, four, five and then six different posts to honor the passing of one of my favorite artists from the 80s/90s, Karl Wallinger. RIP Karl.
Probably too often I wrote about my own pedestrian biography more than the music itself. That happened with Uncle Tupelo, and in big ways with Tom Petty's lost-to-me second record, Shakey's Re-ac-tor and Nelson Sings Kristofferson. Oh yeah and there was the time I melted all my new records...
One great thing about the blog is that it forces me to actually listen to all my records. And so my appreciation grew for some artists like Mickey Newberry (here and here), Bonnie Raitt, June Tabor, and Randy Newman
There are plenty of other artists that I'm just getting started with: Cat Stevens, Paul Simon, Van Morrison, Linda Thompson, The Incredible String Band, Stevie Nicks, Dump/Yo La Tengo, Carole King and Roger Miller will all deserve many future posts.
Finally, there are a few posts that I am pretty proud of.
There's the deep dives I took on Kris Kristofferson and Lord Franklin's connections to my own biography, and I'm glad I connected Ian Matthews to Richard Thompson and the terrible suffering in Gaza.
Plus, I think my first big piece on Dylan was alright, Ma. And I had a lovely weekend morning listening to Jonathan Richman.
And finally, I'm proud of my Sandy Denny piece on songs that birth worlds and another rambling meditation about her that included CS&N fighting over a sandwich.
Okay, you did it: you read a whole post about posts. Thank you so much for supporting my self-indulgent blog people. I really appreciate it.

hey!! I'm obsessed w your writing about butch bea -- it's been super life-giving and I feel so seen when I read it :) lol it's gotten to the point where I am BEGGING my gf to watch warrior nun for the sake of being able to read the butch bea universe... anyways. it's incredible. show-stopping. legendary.
I did have a question, though -- what kind of music do you think bea listens to? to me (read: I'm projecting lol) she'd love "take the sadness out of saturday night" by bleachers, "in defense of my own happiness" by joy oladokun, and boygenius (both the first ep & all three of their solo work). and of course ava loves to sing "solid" by muna to bea.
anyways, again, I LOVE this universe & am very grateful that you've spent so much time & energy fleshing it out :) have a great day!
well i have none of these songs as ones bea would listen to but that’s cool! do whatever u want!! i have no agenda w music ppl fuck w so do ur thing lol
maybe bc i’m in LA, but i think she’s p vibey. lots of frank ocean, moses sumney, blood orange. especially blond & negro swan as like fundamental albums for her. bea is also fun!! i think she loves like alicia keys & tlc, really good classic r&b, & subsequently like solange. also i obviously love arooj aftab but i do stand by like. the supreme holiness in her music so i think bea would rly love it. it’s like profoundly undeniable. in that vein, sufjan stevens & leonard cohen as well. i think bea would also rly love like… karen o, silversun pickups, paramore kinda vibes too when she’s Feeling It. & god help anyone who ever plays a love supreme for her
mm for me ava is a pop girly!! which is my favorite!! i literally mean this w like i think pop is the most supreme genre of all time ever, so like… carly rae! charli xcx! caroline polacheck! she is here to feel! she is here to have fun! she is here to be sexy! she is here to be sad! she is here to be in love! the intelligence & excess of pop & its like silly yet obsessive nature,,, how could ava not fall in love. how could anyone not fall in love. pop forever. + the entirety of the insecure soundtrack (which bea probably has half of on vinyl) — best show of all time re:music. (somewhere in there there’s them watching insecure as an ode to LA but i digress lol). i do think ava also probably loves anything justin vernon does (hymn alternatives, the poet of our generation — a word about gnosis, it ain’t gonna buy the groceries), & also she loves contemporary classical.
both of them are absolutely feral abt florence + the machine, all of her discography but i think her latest album maybe more than anything

Steven Tyler’s career-ending throat injury: How dangerous is a fractured larynx?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Aerosmith’s mid-tour announcement that the band is retiring after five decades has spotlighted the little-known condition that frontman Steven Tyler is battling. On Friday, the band announced on its website and its X account that Tyler’s ongoing vocal issues led them to the “heartbreaking” decision to stop performing.”As you know, Steven’s voice is an instrument like no other,” the statement read.AEROSMITH RETIRES FROM TOURING, STEVEN TYLER’S VOICE WON’T MAKE FULL ‘RECOVERY’: ‘HEARTBREAKING'”He has spent months tirelessly working on getting his voice to where it was before his injury. We’ve seen him struggling despite having the best medical team by his side.””Sadly, it is clear that a full recovery from his vocal injury is not possible. We have made a heartbreaking and difficult, but necessary, decision – as a band of brothers – to retire from the touring stage.”Prior to the tour cancellation, the band had postponed a few dates of their Peace Out farewell tour after Tyler damaged his vocal cords during a Sept. 10 performance, according to reports.”I’m heartbroken to say I have received strict doctor’s orders not to sing for the next 30 days,” Tyler, 75, posted on Instagram. STIFF PERSON SYNDROME PATIENTS SHARE WHAT IT’S LIKE TO LIVE WITH THE RARE DISEASE”I sustained vocal cord damage during Saturday’s show that led to subsequent bleeding. We’ll need to postpone a few dates so that we can come back and give you the performance you deserve.”Later in September, the band posted on Facebook that Tyler’s injury was “more serious than initially thought.””His doctor has confirmed that in addition to the damage to his vocal cords, he fractured his larynx, which requires ongoing care.”The larynx, also known as the voice box, is a hollow tube that runs vertically down the middle of the neck above the trachea (windpipe) and esophagus, according to the Cleveland Clinic. As part of the respiratory system, it also helps to prevent food from entering the windpipe while breathing. The larynx is essential for breathing and producing vocal sounds, the Cleveland Clinic states.A laryngeal fracture, which Tyler suffered, is rare, but it can occur when there is a blunt external force applied to the voice box, according to Dr. Joel E. Portnoy, a laryngologist and otolaryngologist at ENT and Allergy Associates in Lake Success, New York.WHAT IS FRONTOTEMPORAL DEMENTIA, THE DIAGNOSIS BRUCE WILLIS HAS RECEIVED?”After about age 30, the laryngeal cartilage becomes bone, which is more brittle and subject to fracture,” Portnoy told Fox News Digital via email.”This can be life-threatening if the injuries extend internally and may require emergency surgery to repair.”Patients with trauma to the larynx typically experience hoarseness, neck pain, shortness of breath, loss of voice, and pain while speaking or swallowing, Medscape states. For a singer, a laryngeal fracture can lead to “devastating consequences,” Portnoy said.”At best, internal swelling will lead to temporary hoarseness, but in rare scenarios, irreparable damage can occur that permanently impairs the ability to sing or speak,” he said.”Thankfully, most laryngeal fractures are minor and respond to voice rest, humidification, close monitoring and sometimes steroids to manage,” the doctor added. In some severe cases, surgical intervention may be necessary. In general, most vocal injuries are due to local tissue trauma, such as vocal fold hemorrhage (bleeding under the surface) or mucosal tears (like a scrape of the vocal fold surface), according to Portnoy.”These typically resolve with absolute voice rest, humidification and time,” he said. For singers and others who rely on their voices for their professions, timely diagnosis and management are critical, Portnoy advised. “General prevention of vocal injuries includes vocal warm-ups, humidification and hydration as well as employing good vocal techniques,” he said.CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR OUR HEALTH NEWSLETTER”We always advocate for listening to your body; if you feel a change in your voice or are experiencing fatigue, strain or pain, it’s generally time to refrain from voice usage.”Aerosmith isn’t the only band to recently announce a tour cancellation due to illness.Last month, Eddie Vedder and the members of Pearl Jam canceled a string of shows on the European leg of their Dark Matter World Tour, citing recovery from a continued “illness” within the band. In June, Neil Young, 78, and his band Crazy Horse announced they were taking an “unplanned break” due to illness among various band members. For more Health articles, visit www.foxnews/healthAlso in June, country music star Mark Chesnutt announced the cancellation of his tour as he recovered from emergency quadruple bypass surgery. Janelle Ash, Tracy Wright and Christina Dugan Ramirez of Fox News Digital contributed reporting.
