Osprey in Yellowstone National Park, Montana, USA
Holly Mandarich
Conservation status: Least Concern (Population increasing)
Mass: 3 lbs (Adult)
Scientific name: Pandion haliaetus
Wingspan in feet: 5 1/2 feet
Class: Aves
Domain: Eukaryota
Family: Pandionidae
The osprey, also called sea hawk, river hawk, and fish hawk, is a diurnal, fish-eating bird of prey with a cosmopolitan range. It is a large raptor, reaching more than 60 cm in length and 180 cm across the wings. It is brown on the upperparts and predominantly greyish on the head and underparts.
Ospreys prefer habitats with plenty of shallow water where fish are plentiful. They often built nests on small islands or structures over bodies of water that are difficult for predators to get to. Manmade structures such as power poles and other stable structures are common nesting sites.
The osprey's diet is almost exclusively fish, a unique characteristic among raptors. They are opportunistic about the species of fish they catch, but they can only catch fish swimming within three feet (1 m) of the water's surface. They rarely take fish over 16 inches (40 cm) long.

In Kalispell, in the mountains of northern Montana, unhoused people are not allowed to sleep in their cars. They can’t erect tents in public places or carry “excessive” personal possessions. They can’t sleep on bus benches, because the authorities have removed them. And they are unwelcome in the city’s parks, which no longer have public bathrooms or access to water and electricity.
Which raises the question, where exactly are unhoused people expected to sleep?
When Kalispell’s mayor, Mark Johnson, was asked this recently in a federal court hearing, his first suggestion was that they go to a homeless shelter.
The problem, though, was that Johnson and his city colleagues had just voted to close a privately run cold-weather shelter that offers beds to as many as 50 people a night – close to one-sixth of the city’s estimated unhoused population. Indeed, the hearing centered on the legality of that very decision.
“If sleep is biologically necessary,” US district judge Dana Christensen pressed him, “and homeless people can’t lawfully sleep on public property without permission or on private property without permission”, what options did that leave them?
Johnson’s response: “They will find a place within shrubbery, bushes, somewhere on public property that’s discreet where they can sleep, where they’re not seen.”

ok i know that americans from other states generally seem to have no idea what goes on in montana, which is so fair, bc our ratio of land:people is like right behind alaska, but i was just watching an episode of king of the hill where it’s thanksgiving, and peggy says that in montana it’s 70 degrees and they’re going swimming??????? so do other americans think montana is like. hot in the winter??? do they think we don’t have seasons??? hey. we literally share a border with canada. like i know a fair amount of people have no idea where montana is, but it shares a border with canada, and the rocky mountains run directly down the middle of it. like excuse me peggy hill, but we definitely get far more snow than TEXAS does. we are one of those places where they never fucking cancel school for snow unless it’s physically impossible for the buses to run. and personally i think that sucks asshole and i don’t like it here at all, but it is definitely like. the opposite of florida here. idk i just thought that was a silly little funny moment that made me giggle a little and also be a little surprised, bc i just hadn’t heard that one before.
