Hello friends, it’s that time of year again!

Grab a plate, pull up a chair, and consider yourself enthusiastically invited to StarTrekPotluck2024!

The challenge is to create a piece of fanwork that is food or drink themed, and based within the realms of the Star Trek universe.

If you’re interested in joining in, here’s what you need to know:

What do I do?

Pick a type of food or drink, a meal time or a place where nourishment is served/prepared, then create a fanwork around that place/event/object.

It can be any type of fanwork, for example: fanfic, gifs, fanvid, fanart, poetry, podfic... The only constraints are that it needs to be set within Star Trek universe (any series), and it must include the theme of food/drink.

When do I do it?

Choose a publishing date between 1st August and 14th August. We will fill up each slot, and if more people want to join in the fun, we will open double bookings. That way, we can enjoy some delicious fanworks every day!

How do I do it?

1. Pick a Star Trek fandom, or a mash-up of Trek fandoms. (Please do not submit crossovers with non-Star-Trek fandoms.)

2. Send an Ask to this blog with your chosen date, the Star Trek fandom(s) you’ve picked, and the type of fanwork you’ll be creating.

3. Message this blog for any questions / changes etc, your hosts @regionalpancake and @procrastinatorproject will be happy to help :)

4. Post your delicious fanwork on your chosen date.

5. Message this blog with the details of where your fanwork is posted, and tag your post with #startrekpotluck2024

6. If posting on AO3, add your fanwork to the StarTrekPotluck2024 Collection.

7. Follow this blog for updates!

One Month To Go!

There's one month to go in our countdown to Cohen Fest! We've had many days with multiple sign ups so far (And will accept sign ups until the end of April). I can't wait to see what all of our participants have in store! Our Sign-Ups So Far!

Oh damn, I started to do this ages ago and thought I'd be quick about it because I'm chronically online anyway so this wouldn't be much of a change to my behavior xD but then I got busy with irl stuff and also obsessed with a completely different fandom, so it took me a while to get back to this, and the bingo challenge actually helped me look for more J7 fanwork again! Star Trek Fandom Event:  May 2023

Get caught in the darkness for another year.  

Welcome to the fifth Cohen-based Star Trek fandom event, which I have the honor of organizing this time. Since it is a delight every year, the tradition shall not die. It started with the the challenge of Leonard Cohen and the Merry Month of May, organised by the incomparable @mia-cooper in 2019. The challenge is now up for another year.

You know the drill (the same procedure as every year):

This year’s twist: Someone has to die.

1. Pick a Leonard Cohen song, or multiples of. Any Cohen lyrics as long as they sing dark and angsty thoughts to you.

2. Pick a date in the first fortnight of May only (Mon 1st May – Mon 15th May). If there is an avalanche of fanworks coming this way, we’ll double up on the day.

3. Pick up a Star Trek fandom, or a mash-up of ST fandoms. Mix DS9 and Picard if you so wish, but no crossovers with non-Star-Trek fandoms.

4. Message this blog with your chosen date, the Star Trek fandom(s) you’ve picked, and the type of fanwork you’ll be producing.

5. Message this blog for any questions / changes etc…

6. Post your angst-filled fanwork on your chosen date.

7. Message this blog with the details of where your fanwork is posted, and tag your Tumblr post with #abunchoflonesomeheroes

8. If posting on AO3, add your fanwork to the collection which will be created later.

9. Follow this blog for updates.

FAQs

“Do I have to create for all thirty days?”

- Not at all! Feel free to jump in whenever you’d like. This is a creation event, so create as much or as little as you want! However, if you want to be entered in the shout out post, you must participate in all 30 days.

“Can I post a creation after the day has already passed?”

- Yes! You’re welcome to post for a prompt day even after the date, just be sure to tag with which day and prompt you’ve created for! You will only be eligibile for the shoutout post if you complete all 30 days within the month of April.

“What if I don’t understand/like a prompt?”

- We have a list of 10 alt prompts for you to choose from if you don’t like the main 30. Feel free to use our alternate prompts for any day, and if there’s any confusion send us an ask!

Let me introduce to you: the 2024 Four or More Bingo!

This is a low-stakes, personal challenge. There's no penalty for not finishing or running late.

GUIDELINES

Any medium! Any rating! As long as your work focuses on a relationship with 4 or more people, it's allowed!

All works must be your own and not previously posted. AI generated works will be deleted from the collections.

MEDIUM SPECIFIC GUIDELINES

Minimum wordcount for fics is 100 words. There is no maximum

Minimum for art is a sketch on unlined paper (figure sticks allowed!). There is no limit to the quality or effort you want to put in your fills.

Minimum for moodboards is a 3x3 grid (9 images individually or edited in one image). Maximum is given by the place where you decide to post. On tumblr, the maximum is 20 images, but on AO3, you're free!

Minimum for podfic is a 100-word fic. There is no restriction on maximum length or effects.

Minimum for fanvids is 30 seconds. There is no maximum.

Other mediums don't have a minimum. Do you want to make an in-universe magazine for your ship? A cross stich pattern? A sculpture? Go ahead and do it! I look forward to all the things you can create.

Deadline Extended!!

The deadline for my dissertation project, Affirmation/Transformation, has been extended! This project asks fans to get inspired by one of 14 pieces of fine art and create... ANYTHING! Write a story, write a song, design a cosplay, create a fancy manicure, make a meme, make a stop-motion video, choreograph a dance, make a SuperWhoLock gif fic, or anything else your heart can dream up. Fanworks are submitted digitally, so you don't have to actually send me anything, and all kinds of fanworks from all fandoms are welcome!! You can find all the pieces and sign up for reminders HERE.

I'm not going to lie, I haven't gotten quite the response I was hoping for. I have enough submissions to put the show on, but not as many as I would like for my research. If you're interested in supporting my project, but you're not sure how, please reach out to me! I'd love to see as many different kinds of fanworks and as many different fandoms represented as possible. Submissions will be accepted through the end of the exhibition (December 22, 2024) but, if they're made after August 1st, I can't promise they'll be in the exhibition on opening day. The exhibition will be available both in person at Marquette University's Haggerty Museum of Art. and online.

The McSpirk Events Gift Exchange is now live!

This exchange will be a bit different from others!

In fact this gift exchange is about Response and Remix works.

What is a response?

Response works that are a fanwork created that were inspired by someone else's creation. (Kind of like how big bangs have art inspired by the fic, and reverse big bangs have fics inspired by art made).

What's a remix?

Remixes which are re-envisoned versions of someone else's fanwork. (As an example maybe you wrote/drew an alternate ending to an episode. Well as a gift to you someone would read that fic and then write, draw, or edit their own ending to that episode.)

Does it have to be Mcspirk?

Nope! While this is a Mcspirk blog, I wanted to host an event that would help everyone in the fandom celebrate each other's amazing talents and skills! So you can request, and share works for any star trek ship, or even non-ship material.

What are the rules?

Your gift has to meet these minimum requirements:

500 words for fics.

10 songs for playlists

30 seconds for a video edit

A sketch for fanart

A graphic edit

A GIF

2. If you are under 18 do not request an NSFW gift, and do not link any NSFW content you may have made.

3. Do NOT reveal who your making a gift. This is a surprise until reveals happen on August 22nd.

4. Turn in your gift by August 10th!

Are Treats allowed?

Of course! If you want treats please include in your request description that treats are okay.

For those who are unaware, treats are bonus gifts. You are not required to make any treats but you can if you want too.

So how does this work? (Step by step instructions with images to help are below the cut.)

Step 1 - Go to the event page on Ao3 here. (The collection was mistitled. I changed it to Mcspirk Gift Exchange 2024.)

Step 2 - Click Sign Up

Step 3 - You begin filling in your request. Please fill in the follow categories to best summarize the fanwork you want a gift made of. You can make up to 10 requests.

For fandom you'll want to put whatever fandom your piece is of. You'll do the same for characters and relationships.

For additional tags please put what types of gifts you'd like to receive as well as if you want a Response gift, a Remix gift, or you can select both to receive either or.

Please put the ratings that match your original source material and any warnings that apply.

Below is an example of one of my pieces, and how I would link it in the description of a request.

Step 4 - Fill in an offer! Please be sure to list all the ships & characters you'd be willing to make gifts for PLUS what kind of gifts you want to make.

This process works exactly like the requests side of things only instead you'll be putting in all the ships/shows/ratings you'd be willing to create for + what you'll make!

Instead of the description box being used for links to works, you can instead use it for extra information. (Stuff that myself as a mod will consider in case I have to switch any matches around.)
