Ok, so let’s start with our setup.

SY and LBH went to the same secondary/high school, where LBH had a bit of a reputation for having a new girlfriend every other week. SY of course disapproved… of the girlfriends. Surely someone as handsome as LBH deserves someone who really loves him, instead of all these girls he breaks up with so soon after getting together! He might pick up a tendency to follow him on dates… and take photos… he really just wants LBH to be happy! Knowing all his favourite things is just a way to find the girl who would be perfectly suited to him!

A few years later, they’re all in university now — but different ones (same city though). SY is studying economics, LBH is studying law while living out of his cousins apartment because his father is still in jail for media piracy (and also some organised crime). LBH ends up taking a literature elective taught by SYs older brother, SJ, mostly so he could flirt with literature student NYY. SJ views this as harassment but can’t get him on it because NYY won’t say anything (she’s not interested, but also not really bothered and knows he’ll stop if she asked). Then SJ, already looking for an excuse to kick LBH out of his class comes across something interesting… evidence of plagiarism in his assignments. LBH ends up being kicked from the class, and eventually has to transfer to the law course in the only other university in the city… the same one SY goes to.

Of course, the entire thing was set up by SY. He’s friends with SQH, who happened to be taking the same class as an elective (studying accountancy for his parents), and who also happens to be in a relationship with a TA for one of his other classes. SY took the opportunity for blackmail, knowing that SQH has done similar things before (eg changing his own grades in the school system as a teenager). He’s realised that not seeing LBH every day is no fun, and going all across town just for a glimpse.. no, this is much better. And if he just happens to volunteer to show LBH around his new campus…

i can never get into any aus that make shen yuan too ooc and stalker/murderer shen yuan falls into that category.

but this does make me giggle at the idea of binghe thinking someone is stalking him, being elated at seeing it's his old tutor Shen Yuan, not knowing shen yuan really isn't lying when he says he just happened to be there every. single. time. Is it hard to believe two rich young men would end up visiting the same places??

Binghe, DERANGED: I'll just drop my bracelet and walk away, pretending I didn't notice... a little gift for my admirer. I'm sure he'll be overjoyed to have something to lick while he's being a pervert over me...

TGCF: I think Xie Lian would very quickly realize he has a stalker. He has had a stalker before! Three times, even, though the other two were small ones compared to the big first one. He is, one might say, experienced in being stalked. However unlike the previous ones, this stalker is kind of.... nice.... kind of. Fun. Yes he keeps popping up where he shouldn't and Xie Lian definitely saw his own picture in the guy's wallet that one time, but he's very NICE and POLITE and honestly, the attention is nice. This is a good stalker. Xie Lian will lean into it to the horror of all his close ones. Xie Lian will encourage the stalker to stalk and meanwhile Hua Cheng thinks he's winning the Best Courtship Award, not knowing anyone more sane would have called the cops.

MDZS: Wei Wuxian would see Lan Wangji staring weirdly and acting weirdly one too many times and decide the man is stalking him. What a shame! He's so beautiful! Beautiful men aren't meant to be stalkers! Wei Wuxian's immediate decision to stalk right back is questionable at best and mostly impulsive. Several months after they end up together, it turns out Lan Wangji recognized Wei Ying from a Missing Child Poster and also from meeting as little kids, and all that staring was him trying to figure out if the Jiang family kidnapped him as a child. When Wei Ying decided to stalk him, Lan Wangji just thought the guy recognized him in turn and wanted to rekindle their childhood friendship.

SVSSS: Shen Yuan is not gay. He's not gay. However, lately, he keeps running into the most beautiful, handsome, gorgeous, hot, THE most perfect man he has ever SEEN. The guy is so charming and sweet and clearly having a rough time lately, CLEARLY he needs some support! Some encouragement! So what if Shen Yuan decides to dig up everything he can on the guy? That's normal! The dude seems to be HOMELESS, he needs help! Shen Yuan just needs all this information to make sure he can get Binghe the most fitting, best job. And besides, clearly they're meant to be (platonic) if they keep running into each other. He's so proud he made a friend and he's so proud he can help said friend. He ignores all the attic wife jokes from Airplane. There is nothing wrong with enjoying cleaning and cooking, dude! Binghe is very masculine. And he can leave whenever he wants!

Meanwhile Binghe, who knows stalking is bad but can't help it, can't help make sure to run into Shen Yuan every chance he gets, or memorize all that he likes and dislikes and- well, it's fine! Because it turns out that when he finally moves in with Shen Yuan, his boyfriend ALSO stalked him! Not that Shen Yuan will admit it, but Binghe sees the conspiracy board with all his info carefully mapped out, and he knows that his precious A-Yuan stalked him right back, doing it the digital way instead of on foot, like Binghe did.

It's very flattering.

what are your thoughts on stalker Shen Yuan?

my thoughts on stalker shen yuan are many and varied, and sometimes contradictory.

personally i want shen yuan to be whatever he wants to be, and stalker shen yuan is so fucking delicious that i’m grateful whenever i happen upon it.

but shen yuan is too filled with shame and self-imposed conditions to actually be a stalker. he’d skirt close to it and spook himself away before he does anything even remotely scandalous.

would he like to know what binghe is up to at all times? 100%. always. no question. is he inappropriately curious about everything that has to do with binghe? what kind of question is that, of course he is.

but he’d know it was inappropriate!! he’d back away and slap himself for the audacity!! he has done this in canon!!! it’s so frustrating!!!!! shizun allow yourself to be creepy and overstep, i promise binghe wants you to!!

which brings me to the point, if there is one. this is what i’m thinking:

luo binghe catches shen yuan’s eye without him knowing it. be this by way of shen yuan transmigrating into pidw into a self-insert npc, a modern au wherein binghe is the popular charmer of whatever space they share with shen yuan watching him from the sidelines, an idol/mafia/university/office au, whatever.

i want shen yuan to get curious to the point of sticking his nose where it doesn’t belong without actually doing anything overly invasive, and he falls ass-first into something he cannot handle. binghe catches on and decides to play with his food, and shen yuan is in so over his head he can’t make ends or tails of what’s happening. binghe manages to convince shen yuan that he is the one following him around when it’s binghe who sets up every meeting.

he sets up a way for shen yuan to get lost and end up in binghe’s rooms, where he acts scandalised when shen yuan enters. he hooks up with someone where he knows shen yuan will be able to hear. he charms his way into being told shen yuan’s schedule and always arriving there first, greeting shen yuan with a “are you following me?”, but it sounds hotter and allows for plausible deniability. (i never did claim to be overly creative)

shen yuan is losing his mind. he’s frustrated with his own clumsiness, and is entertaining the thought “what if i’m subconsciously stalking luo binghe?” or something of the sort. this blows up in binghe’s face, as it should, when shen yuan decides to actively avoid him.

how this resolves itself, i have no idea. i’m just spitballing. i just love a smart, upright man being led around by a leash without realising, and i imagine a bingge-variant would also greatly enjoy making it happen.

a better man would’ve been more succint. a good man would’ve had more to say. i, proud and sleepy, present you with the stalking cycle of bingyuan and hope you can make something of it where i couldn’t.

my brain is being weird again bc i keep imagining how canon bingqiu would react to their fan fiction counterparts. im talking about like a multiverse au where sy keeps waking up in another shen yuan’s(?) body and has some kind of telepathy with lbh for plot reasons. every time he gets put in an au where binghe is a stalker or serial killer, sy is like oh so just the usual. until the dubcon turns more dub than con. then sy immediately sends “ROC ROC ROC!!!” to lbh so that his husband knows to come and get him ASAP. yes Regret of Chunshan became their code word for this.

the first one is an AU of PIDW— much like worm, it’s an exploration of trauma and coping mechanisms that make you worse. it’s 79-centric. they both work for the PRT. lbh is a ward that shen jiu is abusing. shen jiu’s trigger was exactly when you think it was, but yqy is a cauldron cape (not that shen jiu knows that). the abyss is lbh’s second trigger, and it’s what switches him from superhero to supervillain. there’s body horror. there’s revenge fantasy. there is so, so much trauma.

the second one is a crossover with SVSSS proper, in which shen yuan transmigrates as sophia/shadow stalker, has to try and avoid getting fucked up by alec, and ultimately ends up (a) having lesbian sex with Taylor (b) getting the fanfic she’s in moved from spacebattles to ao3 (c) transing her gender. none of the other PIDW characters are there it’s just shen yuan in the plot of worm. also wildbow is there

IC smut or OOC smut?

why would i seek out smut of the character™ to intentionally read about them not acting like the character™. i would go through the original fiction tag on ao3 and pick a setting/kink i liked if i just wanted to read about a guy getting fucked under circumstances.

speaking more broadly, i do think something being "in character" vs "out of character" is entirely nuanced. these characters would act differently depending on their circumstances. how they were raised, how they got here, the setting of the au, specific personality changes applied to the character in the setting, who are they talking to, what is currently happening to them, are they comfortable or uncomfortable, etc.

using characters i'm familiar with:

if i make an au where jiang cheng is a stalker/yandere, for instance, making him act "in character" isn't just about making him act exactly like he does in the novel. it's about deciding how obsession would manifest through a character with his ideals and circumstances. why is he obsessed? who is he obsessed with? what is the driving element of his obsession? is it ownership? protection? fear? what's in character for this interpretation of him while also honoring my perception of his characterization.

setting is also important. the circumstances required for, say, bingge to kill someone in a canon setting-compliant au would be very different from the circumstances required for him to start killing people in an au where he grew up in our universe as shen yuan's neighbor and childhood friend. presumably, there would have to be outside circumstances or additional factors to motivate someone raised in a "murder is wrong, please don't kill people with swords" sort of society to start killing people with swords.

sticking staunchly to a very specific and rigid characterization based on the source material when writing for a setting/situation completely different from the source material is liable to lead you to characters acting utterly nonsensically.

additionally, i've often said that my interpretation of characters is probably going to feel ooc to people because the moments that define the character for me are going to be different from yours.

lan wangji, for instance, is often characterized by people as very cool, calm, collected and in charge because those are his defining traits to them. for me, lan wangji's most defining character moment is when wwx is off doing something and he's standing off to the side dejectedly kicking around pebbles bc wei ying isn't paying attention to him. i think people who see lwj as a really elegant, tortured character (bc to some degree he is) would probably be taken out of the fic by me emphasizing his loserboy traits bc that's ooc to them.

i think most people don't try to write characters "ooc". it's just that they interpret them differently, or are writing them with a very specific purpose in mind.

Summary: Luo Binghe has had his eye on Shen Yuan for a while, so of course he does what anyone else would do when they have big feelings about their crush. He posts about it online. The only problem is that people seem to think Luo Binghe is a stalker—just because he takes covert pictures of Shen Yuan doesn't make that true—while others think it's cute. Can Luo Binghe fight against public opinion, continue managing his alt accounts, and improve himself so he can be the person Shen Yuan deserves?

Or: Luo Binghe has a Shen Yuan obsession and posts about it online, Shen Yuan has no idea he's being stalked, Shang Qinghua struggles to get his writing career off the ground, the Junior Quartet are unwitting observers, and Liu Mingyan is a casual observer.

But the Shen Wei and Ye Zun situation is the most important thing.
