Saint Matthias Died: 80  Feast Day: May 14 (New) February 25 (Trad.) Patronage: alcoholism, carpenters, smallpox, tailors, Gary, Indiana
St. Matthias had been one of the disciples during the whole of our Lord's public life and, like the others was a witness of His resurrection. It was he who took the place of Judas among the Twelve, following Judas' betrayal of Jesus and suicide. The Church venerates St. Matthias on an equal footing with the other Apostles, whose voices resound throughout the world, from generation to generation, giving testimony to what they saw and heard in their life with our Lord.

St Matthias’ Day

James Radclyffe, Third Earl of Derwentwater. Source: Wikipedia
On this day in 1716, James Ratcliffe, the last Earl of Derwentwater was executed. His crime was to be one of the leading lights of the Jacobite Rebellion of the previous year (known to history as “The Fifteen”) which had begun in the Highlands of Scotland with the intent of overthrowing the Hanoverian King George I in favour of James Stuart, son of King James II who had been deposed in 1688. The rebels invaded England and succeeded in taking Preston, but the hoped-for rising of Stuart supporters in England failed to materialise and Derwentwater, along with many of the other rebel leaders, was captured by Hanoverian troops there.
Romance followed the story of Derwentwater after his death. Many ballads were written of his tragic demise and his wife, Lady Derwentwater, briefly escaped with the couple’s fortune by climbing the cliffs above the family seat in Derwentwater. On hearing of her husband’s execution (she blamed herself for encouraging him to join the Stuart insurrection), she threw the treasure into the lake, never to be seen again. Tradition also states that when Derwentwater was executed, the stream at Dilston Hall ran red, the river turned into a sea of serpents, and the sun shone red with blood. The Aurora Borealis may be the actual origin of this dramatic tale and the Northern Lights are still referred to in Cumbria as Lord Derwentwater’s Lights.
Today is also St Matthias’ Day, on which the last cold blast of winter takes place. Traditionally Matthias’ feast is characterised by freezing weather either on the day itself or sometime over the following week.

Chapter 11: The Vulture of Saint Matthias
Two minutes had passed.
Ever tolerant, Lucian focused on the hard knuckles of his opponent, seething eyes, the silver-plated walking-stick brandishing closer to his face. Endless prattle going on and on. Moments like these made him question the wisdom of joining forces with a traitor. The more the man raged, the more he betrayed himself as a coward. A vulture that had been pushed too far, the posture slouched, the neck leaning forward slightly. One of these days, the spine would crack…

SAINT OF THE DAY (May 14)
Tumblr media
Matthias, whose name means “gift of God,” was the disciple chosen to replace Judas as one of the twelve Apostles.
The Acts of the Apostles state that he was also one of the 72 disciples that the Lord Jesus sent out to preach the good news.
Matthias was with the Lord since His Baptism and was “a witness to Christ’s Resurrection,” according to St. Peter in Acts.
He remained with Jesus until His Ascension.
According to various traditions, Matthias preached in Cappadocia, Jerusalem, the shores of the Caspian Sea (in modern day Turkey), and Ethiopia.
He is said to have met his death by crucifixion in Colchis or by stoning in Jerusalem.
There is evidence cited in some of the early Church fathers that there was a Gospel according to Matthias in circulation.
However, it has since been lost and was declared apocryphal by Pope Gelasius.
Symbols associated with St. Matthias include a spear or lance.
He is the patron for those fighting alcoholism, small pox, reformed alcoholics, tailors, and carpenters.
