Joachim Patinir (Belgium, 1480 - Antwerp, 1524)
Quentin Massys (France, 1465 - Antwerp, 1530)
A collaboration of Patinir and Massys, who painted the figures in the foreground, although it is only signed by Patinir close to the lower right corner.
Oil on Panel: 155 x 173 cm
Carnal temptation is represented in a general way. The apple offered to the saint by one of the young ladies, like a modern Eve, alludes to original sin, while the woman behind him who caresses his neck already betrays her devilish nature in the shape of the train of her robe, and the monkey, a symbol of the devil, pulls at St Anthony, identified as such by his nimbus, to make him fall to the ground, as his rosary and the shell tied to it already have. Rather different in nature is the scene on a smaller scale to the far left of the panel, which incorporates a passage from the Vitae Patrum or Vaderboeck in which the saint is tempted by the queen and three young women who are with her in a brook...

THE TEMPTATION OF SAINT ANTHONY /c.1870/ by FREDERICK CHARLES UNDERHILL
The painting represents the legendary temptations of St. Anthony of Egypt, considered the founder and father of organized Christian monasticism, he went to the desert to free himself from worldly temptations. This story is a very popular theme in art and represents the struggle of spiritual purity against earthly temptation.
The painting depicts Saint Anthony in distress and deep thought against a chaotic, surreal landscape. The background is filled with grotesque and fantastical creatures that embody the kind of temptations he encounters.
Underhill combined realism and romanticism in his work, but his focus leaned more toward dramatic lighting and emotional expression. The figures demonstrate attention to great anatomical detail, showing the artist's training and influences.
The demons take seductive forms due to the fact that temptation, as a spark of enjoyment, has its duality: it is attractive and dangerous. Moreover, this composition highlights the eternal conflict between virtue and vice. This makes the theme resonate with the viewers through the ages.

St. Anthony, faithful servant of Christ, you offered comfort and consolation to all who came to you in times of trouble. Pray for me now, that I may know true peace of mind, heart and soul. Help me grow in faith, so that I may be free from all useless and needless anxiety in this life, Amen.<3

So I've already posted the theory that Angel Dust has a pet pig as a reference to Charlotte's Web, but now I've got another theory.
I have a book called The Little Book of Saints, and I dipped back into it to see if there was anything about St Anthony (Anthony being Angel's real name). And there was!
And what it had to say was interesting...
Often depicted accompanied by a pig, Anthony is the patron saint of butchers.
So maybe Angel having a pet pig is not a Charlotte's Web reference, but a religious reference.
Or maybe it's both!
And Anthony being the patron saint of butchers ... I wonder if that name was chosen to reflect Angel's human life as a member of a mafia family? Hmmm...
