opened my copy of half-blood prince this morning right on the apparition chapter, and it's just hit me how similar it is to shifting, in principle.

'the important things to remember when apparating are the three ds!' said twycross. 'destination, determination, and deliberation. step one: fix your mind firmly on your desired destination,' said twycross ... 'step two: focus your determination to occupy the visualized space! let your yearning to enter it flood from your mind to every particle of your body!' ... 'step three ... feeling your way into nothingness, moving with deliberation!'

sounds like a shifting method to me.
