New pinned post, ig
GREETINGS!
Name's Opalin, a colour-crazed man with some spicy neurons. I might start yapping about things and posting whatever I feel like, buut that's the charm of it! Now, you probably remember this blog as viera-may-in-emerdon, right? Well, I decided to change it up. Didn't feel like being a one-time advert for Project Emerdon anymore, buut don't tell Tim that!
Anyway, I have some grounds to establish.
1: No politics. This blog is light-hearted, and I couldn't care less about the people in power. If you care and think I should, then I will ask you politely to go elsewhere, and then block you if you ignore that.
2: This is not a blog of bigotry. If you come here disrespecting the neurospicy or the genders, I will simply take action without warning.
3: This blog operates in the GMT timezone, so even with my messed up sleep schedule, I may not respond for a few hours depending on the day.
Well, I'm yapping. More below.
There are 4 OCs running this blog.
The main one, Opalin, will generally appear with either white text or, in the case of a real life post, orange text. Can often be shortened to Ozzy if you wanna be silly.
Then there's Spammage, who I will best describe as Spamton, but friendly and female. She will often speak with purple text and is basically a chaos gremlin on this blog. She likes the nickname Spammy.
And lastly, th- I'll do this myself, THANKS. Glacia, not a pleasure to meet you. You'll probably see me enacting Opalin's blog rules, but you can ask me stuff. Dunno why he's treating this shit as a roleplay blog though. And if you want a short name for me, Ice.
Hiiiiii! I'm Glacia's new friend, Aoife! You'll probably see me commenting a LOT with Glacey! I'll be talking with PINK text! Oh, they all forgot to mention they have their own tags! I'm not bothering with that though!

What do you make of this comment??
I got the following comment on my fic about 3 hours ago. It is totally generic apart from the title of my fic.
What do you make of this?
This is some kind of scam, right?
I only checked their instagram and the account has been there for 2 years with 28 posts and the name has been changed 4 times.
AO3 account has been made yesterday.
I will just be thanking them for the comment, nothing else.
---
I truly appreciate your writing skills and the way you craft your story "Take My Broken Love" I'm enjoying every moment, especially the characters you create. Your storytelling is fantastic, and I can’t get enough! If you have any book recommendations, I’d love to hear them. I'm eagerly anticipating your upcoming work and can’t wait to dive into your next projects.
As someone who enjoys exploring different genres, I’m captivated by your writing.
Additionally, as an artist, I’d be thrilled to bring some of your characters to life through my drawings. It would be an honor to collaborate and infuse your ideas into my artwork. I’m excited about the possibility of creating something amazing together that you’ll love!
Feel free to DM me here, Discord: Instagram: Email:

I'm rewatching Death Note for the first time in 15 years (too long imo, but anyway)...
I'm only a few episodes in, but even while knowing the plot and what to expect, it's still already so good.
This was probably The Series that made me realize how huge the anime industry was and made me want to explore more. I'd been aware of anime pretty much as far as I can remember, but without really knowing what it was until a couple of years before discovering Death Note.
It's also where I got my nickname that some of my friends from high school and college still use to this day (and is strictly limited to being used by them, if I hear anyone outside the group refer to me by that name, I will be severely confused)
Anyway, L just debuted, and I realize I'm sitting on top of my seat and biting my thumb while watching. How fitting.

I really should remember to add this to the body of the post, but Rekudo has counterspam built into it XD you can only rekudos a fic once a day -- if you’re rereading a fic MORE than once a day then at that point you really should be looking into leaving comments instead. May I recommend the sister toolset for that?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[image: a banner for AO3 ReKudos Converter. between the Kudos button and the Comments button is an Uno Reverse type symbol; an arrow leads from the “You have already left kudos here :)” banner to a comment by “You” reading “This is an extra kudos, since I’ve already left one. :)”]
I made a userscript that will automatically turn a pointless click of the kudos button into a customisable automatic comment on the fic!
>> Get the script here <<
The script was made to work with Tampermonkey, so you may need to change the formatting to work with other JS userscript managers.
You can install Tampermokey for Firefox from here.
[EDIT 12/11/2022] The extension version of Rekudo is still live for those of you need it, but I remind everyone that it’s not the supported version of the script and is thus lacking features. The comment assist functions are fully functional, but it lacks the prompt list that the userscript version of Comment Assist has – you will just get a random prompt that says “random prompt” on mode 2 because it will not load the file with the correct prompts. Modes 1 and 3 work just fine.
Actually, Comment Assist is ready to go and fully functional also! I’ll try to make a separate post about it – the plan was always to have Rekudo provide comment prompts for those who wanted to do more than just say “second kudos!” but didn’t know where to begin, but I lost steam on this project due to a negative reaction I got from people wanting more thoughtful comments. Oh well, perfect is the enemy of the good.

tips and tricks for ranboo fans to make chat (and the community) a better place!
hello! since the rebrand is coming up i decided i wanted to make a list of certain things ranboo fans should be discouraged from saying/doing, to keep chat/the community fun and keep from pushing ranboo back into the box of a streamer they no longer are. i personally don’t believe in cringe culture, i think everyone should be able to have fun, but at this point certain jokes and comments restrict ranboo from growing as a person and do reflect on the community. this got a lot longer than i was expecting, apologies! lets begin.
gender jokes (“genderman”, you stole my gender etc)
a super obvious one. getting gender envy from ranboo is normal and super awesome! nothing wrong with that. but the jokes have been overused. the genderman one specifically has ties to minecraft which, while ranboo doesn’t care about being associated with minecraft, it’s still a tie to their past content they would prefer to leave behind. this is the same level as calling them an “mcyt”, while there’s no harm in it and ranboo really doesn’t care, it’s also just.. not really true anymore and hasn’t been for years. let them grow!
2. *blank*boo/general spam
*blank*boo is nothing but spammy. all it does is fill up chats and replies and brings no substance to anything. spamming “tiredboo” when they yawn, “madboo” when they yell etc. is not contributing anything meaningful to a chat. it’s annoying and drowns out actually fun and interesting comments. as for general spam, you can use a few emotes here and there! but when all you do is spam emotes it again just floods the chat. when ranboo tells chat to stop spamming, you stop. don’t take it as a challenge, you will just get banned. yes there is delay, but you can see what other people in chat are saying too. spamming lag, telling them they missed a dono, anything where you find yourself repeating what other people are saying to either get their attention or just because (except for using bttv emotes) just don’t. i know most people are used to speaking in a fast chat, but the truth is chat doesn’t have to be fast! if you don’t have anything to say, you can just stay quiet. even spamming the PETTHEMODS emote defeats the purpose !!
3. telling off chat
slightly related, you don’t have to tell off chat either. going “chat stop” “oh my god chat” just adds to the spam. change the subject! ignore the spam and let the mods take care of it. focus on reacting to the stream and being silly, not being backseat mods.
4. the swearing obsession
ranboo is almost 20. they make so many innuendos every stream. they are heavily considering adding a mature warning to most streams from here on out, and as we have seen they no longer are the “family friendly” kid who they used to be. he can say shit and fuck and people can be normal about it. you don’t have to say LANGUAGE or go THEY SWORE ?????? he’s an adult and can swear. all of his friends swear and a huge portion of us in the community do too. it is not a big deal
5. telling ranboo what to do
back seating in video games, as well as in other situations when it’s NOT ASKED FOR is not fun. let ranboo do what they want. this applies to just general things too- you don’t need to tell ranboo to go to sleep. they can make that decision themself. again, he’s almost 20.
6. assuming ranboo is uncomfortable with something
it’s always good to be careful about respecting boundaries! but don’t confuse your own boundaries for theirs. ranboo has said many times that if something bothers him, he’ll talk about it! it’s safe to say they are more uncomfortable with you harassing an artist for drawing something you personally don’t like, over the actual art itself.
7. the chat hopping/mentioning ranboo unnecessarily
we all love ranboo. that is very obvious. their friends love them too! but when you go into one of ranboos friends chats or comment sections and start either asking about ranboo, telling his friends to play with them, or making unnecessary references to their content, it makes their friends want to do things with them less! streamers are their own people. there’s nothing wrong with watching one of ranboo’s friends streams because ranboo is there, i do it all the time. a lot of us do. the biggest thing is to be RESPECTFUL to the person who’s stream you are watching. if you chat, chat to the streamer! you don’t have to mention ranboo. or, just stay out of chat if you don’t think you’ll be able to stay on topic. you don’t have to speak in chat! there is the flip side of this, don’t bring up other streamers in ranboos chat unnecessarily either! no one cares if you saw two colors and it made you think of something unrelated. it’s so disrespectful to the streamer to do this.
8a. unnecessary negativity
the internet can be a very negative, reactionary place. seeking out negativity just for the sake of an argument is unhealthy and can also expose others to arguments that they wouldn’t have had to see. bait, obvious unchanging bigots, and also people who just don’t like ranboo (which is valid!) don’t need to be engaged. in the case of trolls, bait and bigots, they only bring negativity and are there to cause arguments. don’t give them the attention they want. As for people who just don’t like ranboo, you can leave them be too! Not everyone has to like ranboo. he can handle it, you don’t need to defend him or try and change someone’s mind. now, unnecessary negativity does not equal call outs/criticism!
8b. please criticize !
if something happens in the community, or from ranboo directly that hurts you or makes you uncomfortable, don’t be afraid to say something and help make us all better people! ranboo wants criticism. if it’s purely in the community, try reaching out to the other person first! often things can be settled privately so as to not hurt others by dragging them into the conversation or making things heated and causing people to attack each other. on the other side of this, if you see criticism from someone and feel the need to defend ranboo: don’t. if you are affected by something (ie. you are a person of color and the topic is racism) feel free to add to the conversation! if you do not have an opinion on something (ie lesbians call out lesbiphobia, and you are straight) keep it to yourself. let the people actually affected by something talk and have an opinion, and support them. it may feel like people are “attacking” ranboo (or you!) but they are not. they are real people with real, valid feelings, who want to feel safe in a community when in real life, they may be constantly victims of horrible things. listen first. if you still have your own opinions, reflect on them and why you feel the way you do, and dissect any implicit bias you may have. these are all important things that keep a community safe, happy, and mutually respectful!
ranboo encourages everyone to be good people and use common sense. remember when you say something, people other than ranboo see it too! every account has a person behind it, so treat each other with respect and help make the community a more fun and safe place for everyone to be in. ranboo has no tolerance for bigotry, racism, misogyny, antisemitism, ableism, and so on. remember to be aware of the things you are saying, and if you don’t know why something is wrong, look it up or try asking someone politely!
thank you for taking the time to read all of this! this list is non exhaustive. there are plenty of other things you can do in the community to make this a better place, from uplifting the minorities in the community more, to supporting artists by reblogging/sharing and commenting on their art, and more. at the end of the day though we are here because we love ranboo, so by following guidelines like these and putting in the effort, you show ranboo and the other people in the community you care and make everyone proud.
that’s all for now! keep boobing!

The 80,000 warnings about the ao3 spambots on here are making me realize... do people on tumblr not know what an SEO scam is??????
Everyone warning each other to not click on the links... I mean yes this is just good internet advice, don’t click random spammy links, but if the point was trick you into clicking they would be doing a better job of pretending not to be bots, don’t you think?
The purpose of these comments is SEO optimization... just trying to increase their pagerank in search results on Google or Bing by making a lot of different pages link to them.
These aren’t a big deal if they hit the accounts of active writers, who have plenty of tools to get rid of them.  The game is to hit the accounts of writers who aren’t  checking their emails, and won’t bother to log in / mark as spam.  Then the comments stay up and help with getting their links on early pages of search results or making them look more legitimate.
Anyway here’s something for the AO3 engineering team to do - figure out where these bots are coming from and block the domain.  Since ao3 is mostly volunteer labor we just wait until someone’s free to work on it or the board votes to pay for it, though.

The Clarkesworld AI Spam issue is one of those stories that to me really highlights the limits of the tools that hype is obscuring. Clarkesworld is a well-established Sci-Fi publishing magazine that today had to suspend all of its submissions due to being overwhelmed by ChatGPT generated entries:
Tumblr media
This inspired a lot of discourse around the idea of a ‘crisis of credibility’ on the internet, AI sweeping away the boundries of authenticity in a flood of forgeries. How can magazines even operate in this new environment, one might ask?
Which is weird because this environment isn’t new at all, as the editor, Neil Clarke, comments on in his blog post around the problem:
Since the early days of the pandemic, I’ve observed an increase in the number of spammy submissions to Clarkesworld. What I mean by that is that there’s an honest interest in being published, but not in having to do the actual work. Up until recently, these were almost entirely cases of  plagiarism, first by replacing the author’s name and then later by use of programs designed to “make it your own.”
The issue isn’t that spam exists, its the quantity:
Tumblr media
This is undoubtably a gigantic spike, and 100% it is induced by ChatGPT.
But hold on - is ChatGPT actually *better* at this that previous spam tools? Niel doesn’t think so, even if he is worried about the future:
I’m not going to detail how I know these stories are “AI” spam or outline any of the data I have collected from these submissions. There are some very obvious patterns and I have no intention of helping those people become less likely to be caught...
... What I can say is that the number of spam submissions resulting in bans has hit 38% this month. While rejecting and banning these submissions has been simple, it’s growing at a rate that will necessitate changes. To make matters worse, the technology is only going to get better, so detection will become more challenging.
And how expensive was the plagarism before to do anyway? It was copy-pasting text, automated word replacement programs, and done, that is trivial. Its a little harder than ChatGPT, sure, but you could make a thousand in a day no sweat, automated scripts randomizing names and jumbling nouns from a list.
The success rate also seems to be zero! Neither plagarism nor ChatGPT generates any story worth a damn, these aren’t being accepted. Neil is quite confident he is catching 100% of them and I believe him on that, these tools cannot write good fiction of any length beyond a paragraph.
So what is the ChatGPT’s advantage over previous, ‘dumber’ spam that justifies a 100-fold increase in spam usage? I am not seeing one, and I don’t think there is one besides marginally lower per-spam costs. Phrased another way, what was stopping someone from submitted 500 spam entries in one month in 2021? Nothing but interest in doing so.
Which is the rub of why this is happening - it isn’t because ChatGPT is good at this task, its because its the hype thing to do. Everyone is talking about it, everyone is trying it out, everyone is trying to find “delta” so they can ride the hype train. A bunch of people, some who may have even had axes to grind against Clarkesworld, have heard of this brand new fun tool and are flooding into the market to take advantage of it. But there might not be much to take advantage of; hype is fleeting, particularly in the face of no results as this effort is getting. As it fails, unless that axe really needs grinding above all else, spammers will move.
All of this to say that this story is, again, not a story about AI at all. AI is just the reason these already-bad parts of the system are being tested in the public eye.

I was going to go through and do a comment reblog on all the lovely comments on my Crosshair fic and my Tech fics but if I did so I'm worried I'd be too spammy, so I genuinely just want to take a moment to thank all of you from the bottom of my heart. Reading all your comments has made me so happy, I'm glad you took the time to read these!!!

Any of these would be fine as long as you give credit* to the prompt writer!
Personally I usually put something like:
Based on this post by @snakebites-and-ink
at the top of my story post, because that both lets readers take a look at the original prompt and notifies the prompt writer that you used their prompt (people love to see their prompts used). (Putting the story in a reblog of the prompt would accomplish these things as well, but as a personal preference I don't like how it makes my story notes all mixed up with op's.)
*Ideas can't be copyrighted, so technically you don't have to give credit for a prompt as long as you didn't take anything verbatim from it. But it is considered polite to credit, especially in a writing community that involves an exchange of ideas like this. (And it can be a good way to build connections!)
Quick protocol question for the Whump community (and other writing communities I guess) If one was to see a writing prompt on here that sparks something, what is the generally accepted procedure? Does one write the drable/fic and then tag the prompt writer? Does one simply link to the original post? Does one reblog with a link to the story? Reblog with the story? Might be a stupid question 😂 but I don't care I need to know before I inevitably make a social forpar

Man, "censorship" has been for the last couple of years a word that needed to be on the high shelf but not it needs to be on the fucking roof. The posts on the announcement about comment moderation on news posts are... really something. Now people screaming "censorship! censorship!" like utter fools.
Yes yes yes, OTW has to "gain our trust again with actions" and all of that jazz, but really, people are seeing all the frozen comments totally fucking off topic and spammy and saying "yes this bad OTW now censors shit". Not even the failed EOTWR or whatever it was called made me mute that much people like this one single post. The screaming about "OTW you need to gain our trust again" feels like is coming from people who no matter what good (or bad) the OTW may do (or may not do), the "trust" won't ever be "gained" again. Like how "holding accountable" someone now means "I will remember how you said the N word when you were 12 on Twitter even when you're 25 now and had proved to be a better person".

I'm okay with abortion up to 24 weeks as long as the pyramidal cell dendritic spines haven't formed on the neurons.
For those that don't know what that means, the pyramidal cell dendritic spines are the parts of neurons that allow the transfer of signals.
They usually don't form in a fetus until the 28th week, but they can sometimes form earlier, at which point their nervous system can actually start functioning the same way it does in humans like you and me.
Before these cell structures are formed, a fetus is incapable of thinking or feeling in any meaningful way outside of the most intrinsic responses to stimulus that don't require brain activity.
I believe that before this benchmark, the fetus is intrinsically less valuable than the mother because the fetus is literally incapable of "living" and having experiences like you and me do.
After this benchmark the fetus and mother should be considered equal, since they have the same capacity for the conscious experiences we refer to as "living".
It's simply morally wrong to consider something literally incapable of experiencing anything to be more valuable than something capable of having experiences.
First, I’m gonna have to ask you to stop copy/pasting the exact same comments you’re leaving on the stuff you reblog from me in my inbox. It’s a little bit spammy.
Secondly, that is a terrible justification for killing a child. There’s a lot we don’t know about what babies in the womb are capable of perception wise and our understanding of it changes by the decade.
But even if you are correct about what babies in the womb can or can’t think or feel, that doesn’t mean it’s ok to kill them. And it doesn’t mean their lives are worthless and not equal with more developed human beings.
It is morally reprehensible to define human worth based on how developed a person is or what they are capable of, which is exactly what you have done.
You are saying it’s ok to kill a developing child before they have reached the point in their development that you deem them valuable and equal to more developed people. That is evil.
Creating arbitrary standards of human development that you pretend define human worth and then using those pretend standards to justify killing people who haven’t yet met those points in development although you know they will if you refrain from murdering them is absolutely vile.
It’s not ok to kill children just because they are still growing.
