the ninth doctor trusted rose enough to believe she would stay with him after his face changed. and twelve took some convincing but towards the end of deep breath accepted that clara would stay by his side no matter how old he looked. but thirteen was so used to losing people. her previous self had loved clara and lost her, he had looked after bill and failed to save her, he had tried to redeem missy and (to his knowledge) lost that cause too. no wonder she wouldn’t trust yaz to stay for her fourteenth face. no wonder she believed she ‘had to do this next part alone’. she had grown quietly distant with the new knowledge that she was no longer even an ordinary gallifreyan, not something of this universe, but outside of it, alien even to the aliens. isolated and inaccessible, standing on an invisible pedestal her ancestors placed her on — a pedestal that more resembled a cage. glass walls on all sides like the forced regeneration chamber. thin glass wall between her and yaz now, transparent but too solid to break through. harder than azbantium when there’s no solid footing to stand on.

of course yaz would run when she saw her new self. of course she would leave. companions would never stay now, they would never fully understand. when thirteen said that she would need to do ‘this next part’ alone, by ‘next part’ she meant ‘the rest of her (potentially eternal) life’. it’s the classic gambit: push the one you love away before they get the chance to reject you. because they always will, now. either that or they die in horrible circumstances. better to flee like you’ve always done.

this is why the bigeneration was a narrative necessity, why the giggle was the perfect vision of a positive finale. the original version of the doctor gets to settle down with people that he won’t lose. people that he won’t turn away from. people whose hearts he won’t inevitably break. he’s sitting there in the back yard and he’s not going anywhere…

James’s backstory

James was born in Santa Carla and was brought up by his parents, missy and Caleb hart, until he was seven

His father was a nasty drunk who baby trapped his mother with him when she was freshly 18 and he was 30

His mother was a sweet woman who would lose herself to pills in an attempt to escape the hell she had been trapped in

He lived in a constant cycle of listening to his father beat his mother, his mother taking pills and crying and his father coming upstairs to take his anger out on him

He was in hell

It only worsened when his mother accidentally took to many of her pills

She died when he was five of an overdose

His father didn’t give a fuck, he went out and found another young victim to trap in his world of pain and hatred

James hated his father

He hated any man who would raise their hands to a woman

Eventually his father remarried and got another young girl pregnant

That’s how he got his little sister

He loved her more than anything in the world (think Karen and kenny from South Park)

His stepmother fell into his mothers habits and took pills to dull the pain of being in a relationship with a ticking time bomb

She grew unable to take care of his sister, Susan

He became her caregiver until she was two

That’s when the incident happened

His stepmother had passed out on the couch and his father had decided to take his sister on a drunken joy ride

They both died in a drunken car accident

James cursed his father for taking Susan away

He hated the dead man more than words could describe

James was taken into his uncles custody and quickly fell into a life of crime with his uncle

He learned all the tricks from how to pickpocket to how to disable at home security systems

He had gotten in trouble with the law more times than he could count but he didn’t care

He grew more aggressive as the years went on and his nightmares of his father became frequent reminders of his hatred

That’s when he met you

You were dressed up in a cute little punk dress at a concert as you swayed your body to the beat

He had seen you around his old school, ever studious and looking like a little angel

How different you were outside of school huh?

He didn’t like you at first, and you didn’t like him

He saw you as a entitled little wannabe who lived a privileged life

And you saw him as an aggressive prick who made his anger everyone’s problem

You would both bicker every moment you were together, which became more frequent when his friend started dating yours

He would never admit it, but he lived for your wit and your insults

You were refreshing

It wasn’t until he saved you from some creep that the two of you started to hang out one on one

He actually liked you and you could tolerate him when he wasn’t yelling

After a few months of friendship, you opened up to him about the fear of your fathers (obviously lying about how many there were)

The day after he gifted you a bat with nails sticking out of it and taught you how to swing it

He became obsessed with you

He chased away your love interests and would threaten people who bothered you

There was once a boy who constantly tried asking you out but every time he attempted, James would simply stand behind you with an threatening glare

The boy then got a twisted ankle from falling down the stairs, or as he claimed “pushed”

After a while of pining, he kissed you and the two of you shared a sweet moment

He then asked you out and you accepted

He grew even more obsessed, but he could tell you were lying to him

He had grown used to lying and could tell by your face

It was the same expression his mother would wear

He planned to run away with you, he bought two one way train tickets to New Orleans

He just had to wait for the two of you to turn eighteen

But then you disappeared

It was like you fell off of the earth, he couldn’t find you anywhere

That’s when he talked to max

They struck a deal that would guaranteed youd be stuck with him forever

Last Friday, I attended my first Social Media Breakfast in probably 10 years! It was excellent.

The talk was at the Improving Minneapolis building in Northeast where Tony Tellijohn of Aktion Interactive spoke about social media marketing.

Social Media Breakfast (SMBMSP) is a monthly event where like-minded folks across the Twin Cities get together to share and learn about social media.

As their name suggests, breakfast is provided before each event: there are bagels, cheesecake, coffee and bacon. Sooooo much delicious bacon.

I've been out of the social media marketing world for about 10 years, but recently my wife launched Ying Spring Acupuncture, her new clinic in South Minneapolis, so I'm helping her with marketing.

Of course, a ton has changed in social from 10 years ago! SMBMSP moderator Jen Roventine asked great questions and Tony had great insights on the subject.

I'll be attending more of these breakfasts in the future.

This event was was kind of a reunion of sorts for me--I got to reconnect with some awesome humans IRL, like Greg Swan, Missy Voronyak, and Lindsay Valenty to name a few. I also met a lot of new folks as well.

I've known SMBMSP Director Mykl Roventine for a loooooong time, and it was so great to catch up with him a little before the event.

SMBMSP has been at many venues over the years, but I LOVE this current space at Improving Minneapolis near Northeast Athletic Field Park. It's nice and big, yet cozy and has plenty of parking. It's perfect.
