Here a few things I found helpful on this topic b.c. it's one of my main interests:

Download YouTube videos on mobile with the Newpipe YouTube client app, you will have to get it off F-Droid or their website because google does not want this in their store for obvious reasons (it also has no ads)

Synchronize any files from and to your Windows, Linux and Android devices using Syncthing , instead of cloud services (that are just someone else's computer) with limited storage, surveillance and the possibility of it all being randomly deleted (which happens) it's a bit of work to set up (took me around 1 hr the first time) but it works and it's instantly in your storage and not somewhere out there

Download music off of YouTube-music (separated from normal YT bc of playlists) with any client, I use this one. It's open source and works to bulk download my playlists into the safety of my hard drives (Desktop only sadly) + you need a separate music player app for phones since android no longer has a native one, I use gramophone, it has a nice interface.

Just download webpages that have any kind of text you would want to read in the future or that you just really like, I think in most desktop browsers you can just hit ctrl + s and specify the directory

Back up your stuff, I've lost it all before and I will not let it happen again

Get F-Droid if you're on android, it's a better curated app store and all the apps are fully open source, (or marked otherwise) also meaning no ads or in-app purchases as far as I've seen, it's best you download from there if you can so that google owns you just one bit less

The app I've been using to read on my phone is KOreader, it ROCKS but you need to be ready to get used to a new UI but once you get to know it it's the best thing, I read so much more bc of my enthusiasm for this app, you can configure tapping your screen corners to change brightness (and so much other stuff) for reading at night, bookmark stuff, it supports a bunch of filetypes, just awesome, idk maybe I'm weird.

btw, if you see resources online that could potentially save your life or a friend's life in the future, i.e. info on access to potentially life-saving care for vulnerable groups- SCREENSHOT, print the webpage if you can or back up the file, keep it somewhere safe. slapping a "#saving for future reference" tag on there isn't enough

honestly it's good to get into the habit of saving and backing up almost ANYTHING you wouldn't want to lose on the internet, such as music/videos/art/tutorials, because data can easily be lost forever when you least expect it. but it's especially important at a time like this when people's rights and access to care are in question.

save everything. set up a system that works for you to make saving things easier so you're more likely to do it. flash drives are pretty cheap. veracrypt is a fairly reputable source for password protecting folders if you share a computer or a space with people you don't trust. be mindful of your surroundings and safety. do your own research into sources to make sure they are not coming from people with ill-intentions. if this feels out of your scope, seek out communities that can help you parse it out. the most important tool at our disposal is each other.

this is the only post i'll make like this but if you have any other suggestions or corrections you're more than welcome to add on.

ymmv obviously this is just a take and half hc but i have to think abt how the wol fights or more specifically, who they fight with.

it always seems to transpire that for one reason or another, the wol fights a lot of their battles alone (in terms of npcs, obviously. you have other players but they're nebulously extant ingame). arr is a whole "throw the wol at the problem"-fest, it kind of doesn't even start to occur to people that "hey maybe sending them to fight this big bad alone isn't always a great idea" until like, stormblood. but even then, the scions and any other allies that are around are very often outright prevented from helping you for one reason or another.

frequently you're fighting a battle on multiple fronts, and there's no real option for them except to focus on their own fight and put their faith in the wol elsewhere. or they get taken away or left behind while you press on. then there's the fact that you're frequently fighting primals, which the majority of characters literally can't help you with for most of the game without jeopardizing their sanity. like, you have other people in the room with you when you fight a primal once, and it's actually a huge problem bc you and arenvald can't really focus on fighting when you're running back and forth trying to shield people from tempering. combined with the limited pool of people who are even on level with a primal in combat to start with, people who can actually assist you with those fights are few and far between.

but even beyond the material reasons! if there's a "canon" wol they're obviously someone who's almost comically obedient, but they do silently exercise agency on occasion... and it is almost exclusively to pick fights, usually alone. like, fucking zodiark. you get sent up to the moon, expecting to maybe fight, like, zenos, fandaniel, nope! the big guy himself. and the wol makes the active decision to not even phone home and say "hey, just so you know, i'm fighting the father of all primals, idk if there's time for you to get up here but. just so you're aware. just in case i cannot kill zodiark by my fucking self. that's what's going on on the moon right now." nah you just jump in there, no need to bother your friends, they're busy, you can take care of this one.

and then this obviously comes to a blatant head in ultima thule, where your friends all but say "we're prepared to sacrifice ourselves along with you if it means the world is safe" and the wol literally denies them that right. they pull the scions back from death and then send them away, and remain behind alone, fully aware they were facing a probably-unwinnable fight. (and i have a whole other fucking essay about the narrative ramifications of zenos' arrival in this context and others but. another time. this post is too long anyway) my point being that's one of the most blatant moments of pc agency and it's to remove others from a battle and stay behind alone.

idk i think a canon wol trait is a fixation on their own sacrifice, a desire to put themself in harm's way because otherwise someone else might do it and that's intolerable. and the narrative often conspires to validate them on this. and it's. interesting? i'm rotating it.

Finally played the night of Mardi Gras, where Clover Clarke revealed a whole new side to herself at the peak of the celebration. She's always been a blonde sweetheart, but Red Clover seems to be a way for Caius to explore edgier performances going forward.

So Caius performed as Clover Clarke, Queen of Mardi Gras, last night and it was insanely successful. She was a star. The parade went like a dream, everyone had a good time.

(I have notes on her song performances as well as stage designs/float floorplan if anyone would actually be interested in seeing that btw)

This was the first time Clover has ever sung in a performance, as Caius has been pretty protective of that talent, but wanted to make the parade special in a big way.

What happened after was, uh, not so great!! But great in the way that you're excited about the trouble your little guy is in, lol.

So, just for context, Clover/Caius had to sleep with a slimy councilman to basically seal the deal to be Queen of Mardi Gras. Shady entertainment industry type stuff, thematically. Caius, before his embrace, did sex work, so, like, he's not unfamiliar with the territory. Still, it's not something he was especially happy about. The councilman then had Caius to step up to be bound to a saltire cross, and staked him. That moment was about when Caius realized that disciplines did not work in that apartment.

The councilman drained Caius, stealing all but three of his blood points (said killing him would be too much trouble, thanks, I guess) then had him dumped on the city limits and texted Bo, our Ventrue, where to find him.

Caius is, understandably, incensed and immediately plotting revenge against this fucker because Who Does He Think He Is?????

Apparently, the Prince's Very Useful Ghoul is who he Actually is, we find, after some research. This complicates the whole "I need to make this man suffer greatly and then make him die" goal, significantly. This is also a fun fact that Christopher Lane, who set the deal up with Bo, should absolutely have known.

Bo went to talk to Lane, who is also his mentor, about that very thing. Lane responded basically, "Well, one, would it have mattered that he was a ghoul, and two, are you sure it happened like Caius said it did? His sire is a known crazy, and he used to do sex work, so. But I'll totally investigate and if it did happen that way, I'll make sure we take care of it." Toxic, gross stuff, obv, but Bo takes the info in stride, for now. Best to play this hand extremely carefully anyway.

So, back to last night, after the parade, Caius was getting out of drag in the dressing rooms, and getting ready to leave, when he's stopped by Lane.

Lane starts talking, and hits Caius with Forgetful Mind about the whole councilman incident. Now he remembers (falsely) that the councilman was still a lech but Caius left afterward, un-staked and full of blood, but a driver that took him home tried to assault him instead, stabbed him with some wood, presumed he died, then he got dumped out, etc etc.

So that's fun! He told his packmates and one other person, so they are the only ones that know what happened now, and Caius isn't even aware of that.

So that all aside, systemics wise, Awe + Enchanting Voice meant Clover was rolling at, like, a 4 difficulty to charm the crowd, with a base of like 14d10 with all the specialties in Charisma and Performance, not counting the buffs for crafting the costume and help from the backing band. The draw for the Rex parade is something like 800k-1 million people total, so this is absolutely the biggest crowd she's performed for, by far. Got the 4th dot of Fame for free, because of just how insanely good the performance was. He also gets a Fame specialty of Queen of Mardi Gras, which is cool.

Man, vampire is fun.

Crime and Punishment Warrior Cats AU

Okay, so for organizational purposes, I'm going to make a list of characters I'm going to keep in the AU, then a list of characters I'm not keeping and why. Obviously, when translating this story into the warrior cats universe, there are going to be things that just don't fit. (btw ✅ means I've finished their ref sheet and successfully turned them into a kitty cat.)

Avdotya Romanovna (despite her and her mother living in a different place than Raskolnikov, I'm going to omit that from this AU, since they end up coming to St. Petersburg anyways, and warrior cats characters basically stay in the same place for their whole lives.) ✅

Alena Ivanovna (Moneylenders don't exist in warriors so I'll need to figure out a different reason for why Raskolnikov would have been doing business with her and for why Porfiry Petrovich originally began to suspect Raskolnikov.)

Marmeladov (I think I'm gonna make it so he ran away from the clan, like how Marmeladov in the book ran away from his family?)

Maybe by bending the Warrior Code in my universe to make it more common for cats to move clans like how people irl can move cities...? Idk yet)

Peter Petrovich (same deal with Svidrigaylov; he will be from a different clan)

Lebezyatnikov (tbh he only stays because he was important for one scene LMAO)

Zosimov (He will be the medicine cat, obviously :3)

Porfiry Petrovich (He will be the clan deputy; I want him to hold some power in the clan, but not enough that he'd be able to exile Raskolnikov without having to prove he was the murderer. I still dk who the clan leader will be...)

Nikolay and Dmitri (will just be regular warriors that just so happened to see Raskolnikov at the crime scene.)

The rest of the characters I add will just be NPCs to fill out the clan. Maybe I'll base some of their personalities on the characters I left out. The left out characters are:

Raskolnikov's landlady (whose name I wouldn't even remember if it weren't listed at the end of the book) and Nastasya. As much as I liked Nastasya, there's no real reason to keep the landlady character in the AU at all, since landladies don't exist in Warriors. Like I said above, I may keep Nastasya as a background character, maybe just some concerned cat who comes to check in on Raskolnikov from time to time. Though I can't really think of a reason for why she would do that unless it were her job.

Natalia Egorevna. The only purpose she served in the book was that Raskolnikov was going to marry her in exchange for living in Zarnitsyna's apartment or whatever it's called. Dostoevsky had his reasons for including this, I'm sure, but I don't see it as all that important and it just doesn't make sense for Warriors. RIP.

Amalia Ivanovna. Another landlady. Again, I might keep her as a background character, but the only role she'd fill is stirring up trouble at Marmeladov's vigil and pissing off Katerina Ivanovna so bad she loses it.

Kapernaumov. He literally doesn't even speak once in the book. Does anyone care that I'm not including him?

Zametov, Nikodim Fomich, and Ilya Petrovich. They can all be condensed into one character, which is Porfiry. All the police station scenes can be changed so that it was Porfiry he was talking to instead. They serve their purpose in the book so that Porfiry would be suspicious of Raskolnikov without them having to meet face-to-face yet, but I can change things around to fix that. Maybe Raskolnikov goes to see the leader instead, and the leader wouldn't be suspicious but Porfiry is. Or I can just say the part where Raskolnikov meets him for the first time in the book isn't the first time in the AU, because why would Raskolnikov not know the clan deputy, at least as acquaintances?

OK rambling over! If no one reads this but me, that's fine, as I'm mainly keeping this so that I know who to make ref sheets for. Esp since I'm going to have to return my copy of Crime and Punishment to the library soon LOL. If anyone has suggestions for names or ways I can change characters and events to fit better into the Warriors universe, please tell me! :D

Willing and forcing myself to take up a pen again and just. Do something. Anything. In this case, drawing 3 animals coming to mind first. Should be easy and quick enough, right? I laboured 30+ minutes over this. It's amazing (bad) at how many steps in the process i second-guess myself and freak myself out into paralysis. Cognitively, i know it's happening and that i should just let go, and be, and draw bad if that's what wants to happen. And i want it to happen. Desperately so. But i somehow seem to completely have lost my inner voice or an understanding thereof. Like, should i continue even if it stresses me out enormously? Should i switch to something else? Should i keep on and just. FinishTM one tiny thing for a start? The second-guessing completely takes over the having-finished-the-thing-as-intended-albeit-painful-and-suboptimal, too. I don't even get the rewarding feeling from it :') So have i done it wrong? Let's second-guess this and my entire existence again, yes? (I don't think i did it wrong - but it's still there. And i am so afraid to think i'll never find my inner guide again. Not just for drawings but. In general. For how i am. Because atm? No idea. Just background stressed with some relief here and there.)

it completely changed my perception of myself, and the things I do. every single time I do anything my younger self would have been or was bullied for, I repeat the words “cringe but free”, sometimes out loud. the concept of being able to enjoy the things I do now, without fear of repercussion, means so much to me. growing up autistic, I wasn’t allowed to be that way.

the fact that I'm unapologetically “cringe”, and i’m simultaneously free to be that way, is wonderful to me. when I was younger, I didn’t have the incredible support I have now, from my amazing friends who allow me to be myself. I'm allowed to talk about my interests, I'm allowed to infodump, I can stim without fear of being made fun of or worse, and best of all I NEVER have to mask with them. love my friends :)

At the same time I would like him to be able to chill (I'm way too easily exhausted to do something/go somewhere every day). When it comes to appearences I'm mostly indifferent, but I do have a preference for fat guys (duh). The most important thing is probably that I want to be comfortable around him

ok so heres something kind of weird they do, but living world seasons are pretty significant sections of story that bridge the expacs. they introduce new maps and sometimes even new features, but for the latter, not to the extent that expacs do. if you simply log into the game in the time period surrounding a living world episode's release, you unlock it for free and have permanent access to it, seemingly no other conditions required. but if you are joining / returning after that time period you would need to buy the episode with gems. you don’t NEED all the living world seasons to play through later unlocked content, it’s not strictly chronological like ffxiv and you can chapter select, but of course a lot of people want to experience it all in order. 

i will say that because LWs can be bought with gems, unlike expacs (which i believe are all real money hard stop), you Can actually convert in-game currency to gems and purchase all the living world seasons technically at no real money cost, but this would take a ton of time and effort for a beginner, especially since some of the best gold farming maps are locked to later living world seasons.

currently, when you buy all the EXPACS (heart of thorns, path of fire, end of dragons), you dont automatically get the living world content too, unless you get the bundle with them included. i always didn't like the way they bundle this stuff -- it's reasonably very confusing for new people.

i have really mixed feelings about this structure in general. it's great for people who are already on the gw2 train -- you make your one time payments and then get to access free story updates continually for years, as long as you just log on to claim it. but i also feel this dauntingly front-loads the cost onto newbies who have an increasingly large backlog to catch up on, and makes it harder and harder to get on the train to begin with. they've recently released the expac that wraps up their big 10 year long story arc, so while we know there will be more story, it's a bit up in the air which direction they'll take the structure next, or if they'll continue doing it in the way they've done it. but it’s a good time to catch up at least! :)

season 1 has just been rereleased and will permanently be free for everyone (it's a long story, but it was previously unavailable for years). season 2 doesnt add any new maps that wouldn't be accessible to someone without the season, so you can actually play through its whole story for free if you can join someone who has it, if that appeals to you, but i dont think youll get any of the achievement rewards etc. for playing through it. this isnt as big an issue for s2 as it would be for some later dlc, since s2 doesn't really add any big features & a lot of people regard it as 'optional' unless you really care about story, but thats not to discount it either.

Yeah, it does worry me, because this is literally 5-year-old behavior. Small children react viscerally to fictional media, often behaving as if that thing happened in the real world in front of them, because they have not developed to a point of being able to fully parse the difference between not just fiction and reality, but also the Self and Others. That's why toddlers take everything personally, all the time.

People can generally have whatever opinions on a piece of fiction they want, but grown-ass adults or even teenagers should not still be interacting with media as if whatever it depicts was happening to a real person, which is what I see from this specific brand of entitlement. Being able to parse the difference between fiction and reality is the #1 way our brains cope with upsetting suggestions from not only media, but also our own imaginations, and it's really unhealthy to not have developed that ability.

Some of this flavor of bullcrap is just pure entitlement, of the garden-variety you see from people raised with it, but being autistic myself I do wonder if some of it isn't also a case of Hyper-empathy* not being managed well. I experience Hyper-empathy, and I will say that as a result of it I absolutely do have certain fictional characters that I feel very, very strongly about, and I can absolutely get very upset when they're depicted "wrong" or done dirty by canon. But because I am self-aware of how my brain works, and because I was taught discernment, I know that these feelings don't entitle me to "ownership" of other people's characters, and that I need to take responsibility for my own wellbeing by disengaging from things that cause me anxiety.

I feels to me like some of these people might be having a similar experience, but they were either never taught to manage their emotions, and/or they've taken modern concepts like "comfort characters" too far and have come to believe this excuses their feelings of ownership and entitlement. Which is yet another example of why teaching kids critical thinking and coping skills to deal with upsetting things they might encounter in media is important.

*hyper-empathy is the experience of having an over-sensitive (compared to most people) empathy response, and it's often seen alongside autism, ADHD or other neurodivergent conditions. people with hyper-empathy often have visceral, physical empathetic responses that can cause high levels of stress or anxiety, and may also experience empathy in 'inappropriate' contexts, such as towards inanimate objects.

not submission. I really hate the "My OC, my rules" thing. Cause like, no? Just because they are your oc doesn't mean you can do whatever you want with them. If you want to make your oc suffer and not like them get help, you deserve to lose rights over them. Especially if you only do that stuff to purposely trigger people. Once you do that, your oc no longer belongs to you. they belong to the public who will take better care of them instead

pardon the Hot Take™ but i think the tiered level design classic sonic is so well known for only really works so well because the increased emphasis on momentum and the feeling of weight over more responsive and snappy controls prevented them from just having one route that accomodates all playstyles like mario games do. i'm not saying the classic sonic games are sluggish or that the tiered level design is a cop-out - far from it, i appreciate the unique gamefeel that classic sonic has, and i also fully admit that the reason i don't prefer it as much as the alternative is mainly because i'm not very good at it! i just think that those games made some sacrifices to achieve their weightier gamefeel, and that the tiered level design is a clever solution to the problems that posed and should be appreciated as such

So while I was distracted with school, this very cool awesome artist (Szkin) reblogged my lancer mech, Word of Law, and it started doing some numbers.

I didn't realize 3D art that wasn't character art had general appeal, and cause i never participated in the tumblr art community until recently (indeed I didn't really use tumblr) I held in my heart that I would never live out my dream of having art mutuals. NOW I HAVE ONE YAYAYAYAY JUMPING UP AND DOWN !!

Why am I reblogging this? Because while I was working on the prototype for Word of Law, I saw this piece by them and in retrospect I think it stuck in my brain, because I (albeit while unawares) used the same ewar-suite detail they did with their Volos design! Glowing ring and all!

My platform is very small, but you should check out their stuff if you like lancer or mecha more generally (Their mecha designs are very crunchy, love them). Their non-lancer, non-mecha stuff is also very good and I especially like their usage of color in their more ambitious pieces, and the worldbuilding that's integrated with their personal work.

RWBY makes us so heartbroken because it had SO MUCH potential but they wasted it, and we really liked it at the start but its gone so far off, like it has some really really interesting plotlines, but they fail because they're not done like they should have been done (like vol 9), and then there's vol 4-5 that are like, hated amongst most fans still because they are wasted potential!! i do hope that whoever buys the IP either reboots the series or somehow manages to salvage it (if anyone buys it that is) this show changed how our head designs characters and weapons so seeing it become so BAD makes us sad

My favorite OC backstory I've written so far is for Indigowing, my Warrior Cats villain OC! I'm kinda obsessed 💀

SO I'll try to explain this as concise as possible, but let's be fr this is abt to be a whole textwall so sorry for that LOL. It started in ThunderClan, where an eight moon old abandoned kit (Indigowing) was found. The ThunderClan leader took pity on him, as it was leaf-fall, and she believed he might not survive leafbare. Indigopaw was made an apprentice and began to train, learning the ways of the warrior code and how to fight and hunt, but surprised ThunderClan with his self-taught fighting techniques. By this time in his life, Indigopaw had already been on his own for so long (he didn't even remember who his parents were; his mother abandoned him as soon as he was weaned) that he could hunt and fight on his own, though ThunderClan saw his ways as backwards and cruel (and tbf he was). After moons of training, however, he was eventually made a warrior despite the fact that most of the clan did not trust him at all and only saw him for his past as a rogue kit. Up to this point, Indigowing stayed optimistic that he could prove himself, win over ThunderClan and MAKE them love him, but this all fell apart when, after a battle with WindClan where ThunderClan's then deputy died, Indigowing's "rival", Volestrike was chosen as the next deputy instead of him. To be fair to Indigowing, I wrote this so that if Indigo had been clanborn, he would have been chosen as deputy, but the entire clan being afraid of him is a pretty good reason not to make him deputy anyways. After this, Indigowing's attitude shifted as he finally realized that he simply would not be able to win over the clan. Their attitude towards him is half prejudice towards rogues and half because of his temper and his disregard for authority and rules. Soon after the naming of the new deputy, an altercation occurred where an argument between Volestrike and Indigowing turned into Indigowing attacking Volestrike, scarring the young deputy both physically and mentally. Indigowing was exiled from ThunderClan, and the furious warrior quickly came up with a plan; he would go to WindClan and lie that ThunderClan kicked him out because they "no longer wanted a rogue in their clan" (and they would believe him because in the story I did set up WC's leader, Nightstar, to like Indigowing, and because ThunderClan and WindClan were warring, so WC didn't like TC at all right then and would believe any slander against their enemy). Indigowing would then play the long game and climb the ranks in WindClan; once he was leader, he would destroy ThunderClan, kill Volestrike (who will be Volestar when they meet in the final battle), and become the most feared and powerful cat in the forest. After moons of working his way up in WindClan, tensions between WC and TC building, ESPECIALLY after TC realized that WC had taken Indigo in, Indigowing (not without a little murdering of some of the cats in his way) became Indigostar. The final confrontation between Indigostar and Volestar is in a massive battle between Thunder and WindClan, in which Indigostar is killed by his old foster mother from ThunderClan, Shadedpool. He is sent to the dark forest after death. Hope I explained that well as it's a kinda convoluted story XD
