Summary: Written for AI-less Whumptober 2023 Day 21. Set during Httyd 1. After the battle with the Red Death, Toothless can hardly believe that he and Hiccup are still alive.

When they decided to fight the Red Death, Toothless was not expecting to get out of that battle alive. It was a miracle that he and Hiccup weren't immediately killed by the cruel queen, let alone that they somehow killed her and put an end to centuries of suffering at her jaws.

But somehow they did it and Toothless finds that they’re both still alive.

His body is in such pain.

He’s never had to push his wings that hard before, his lungs have never had to scream, his heart has never had to stay ahead of death. The heat of the fire as she blew up was hot enough to almost blister his fireproof hide.

The fight is a complete blur. Though the images keep rolling around in his head, he can’t make sense of them. Not how they beat her and not how they’ve made it out alive.

And he can’t imagine what it must’ve been like for a human either. Hiccup lay perfectly protected within the confines of his aching body and held to his chest. His laboured breathing like the sound of drums to his sensitive ears. Toothless can very clearly smell the parts of him- clothes and flesh- that were touched by the fire before he pulled him out.

The smell bothers him. The sounds bother him. His body hurts too much to hold onto him, but he doesn’t let go.

Hiccup almost died. Toothless almost died. He can’t let them seperate ever again. Not now, not ever.

Toothless hears the sound of movement and it wills him from the darkness of sweet unconsciousness. Just the mere glimpse of the grey cloudy and ash-filled day hurts his eyes, an unearthly pounding inside his skull.

Stoick- as Toothless has learned his name is- kneels there. He looks mournful, but Toothless still holds onto Hiccup, not wanting to let go.

4chan dying via getting hacked into oblivion by its own even further radicalized exiles while tumblr is somehow still alive is amazing. it's like watching an anime character getting beaten down for multiple episodes, and instead of having some kind of epic second wind the guy beating them just suddenly dies of a stroke and leaves our protagonist as the last one standing amidst a sea of corpses despite them having gotten bodied in every fight.

Not Quite his Twin

Danny Fenton is not Danyal al Ghul. They’d wanted him to be, but he wasn’t.

He still remembers when he first woke up, his whole body feeling raw and ill-fitted. Even his mind felt wrong, his memories not quite his own.

Which, he supposes, they weren’t.

Because Danyal is still dead. Executed on the orders of the Demon’s Head for failing to live up to his twin.

But the spurned heir would make a perfect figurehead to build legitimacy for a coup, so a splinter sect of the League stole away some of his remains before they could be disposed of. They may not have had permission to access the Lazarus Pits, but they could still turn to some more unorthodox methods of attempting resurrection. A combination of cloning, a few stolen and processed samples of Lazarus Water, and pieces of necromantic rituals.

And it almost worked.

Almost.

The body they constructed did indeed come to life, and clearly possessed at least some of Danyal’s memories, but it wasn’t him. The memories were locked behind a barrier, present in abstract but not felt. This thing they created could never pass for the deceased heir, and thus could never be the figurehead they wanted. So they decided to dispose of him.

But the clone’s memories had shown him this sort of betrayal before, and he did still have some of the original’s skills. He struck first, killing several of their agents and managing to escape the lab.

He had no idea what to do next, but at least he was free. Free to form his own life, to become someone unique rather than just not-quite-Danyal.
