I think there’s something so deeply and intimately and morbidly true about The Last of Us’s primary thesis which is that humanity’s fatal flaw, in that very Shakespearian way, is that we are destined to care too much about one another so much so that we discard the collective entirely. like we have such a capacity to love the human race and humanity as a whole, to grow our communities and govern cities how we know best and foster such connection with the masses which we are part of, but it’s overtaken by our capacity to love even just a single other person. like one human can come into your life that creates such an intrinsic and passionate love in you— or maybe two people or a family’s worth or any small number— and you suddenly would burn entire villages down just to keep them safe.

joel doesn’t blink twice murdering to find ellie. he doesn’t look back when he decides to do what he does at the hospital later on. he has no remorse about any of it it, because this one girl has grown to mean more to him than any possible greater good could ever mean. and it’s reciprocal. ellie would— and does— do anything she can to help him, save him, protect him, and, eventually, to avenge him. because that’s what you do when you love someone. not when you love people. when you love someone.

and it’s selfish, in a way??? because we love these people and would do so much for them because they mean more to us than other strangers do. it’s exactly like an iteration of the trolley problem, actually. one track has your daughter on it and one track has fifty people. don’t even try telling me you wouldn’t go onto track B if it meant saving your daughter and her puppy dog eyes from the whimpering and pain and fear. The Last of Us says yes, you would. I would. we all would. and like yeah that is our greatest weakness, that we have such a unique ability to love a handful of people so deeply that our compassion towards community and strangers and the bigger collective starts to slip from view. but goddamn what a fucking great fatal flaw it is to have. we are all going to die and the world will burn because we loved another person too much.

Whumpee stirring from a deep, medical-induced sleep to the sound of muffled voices, fighting to pry their eyes open to see who it is but their resolve is too weak, their eyelids too heavy.

Their head lolls sideways on the pillow as they draw a slow, sluggish breath, mumbling unintelligibly'Where am I? What's happening?' But their mouth is unable to properly form the words.

The voices pause suddenly, and hesitate, before Whumpee feels a warm gentle hand is stroking their face and hair.

"No, No...shhhh. Shh, It's alright, Whumpee. It's nothing," A soothing voice whispers, lulling them back down. "Just go back to sleep."

"It'll all be over soon..." Is the last words Whumpee hears before the medicine takes over again, causing them to fall back into their slumber.

Do you have a headcanon about Viggos relationships he had in the past (if he had some) or body and kiss count headcanons?

I started writing this in the tumblr text box and then realized it was going to get long and I should probably make a separate file for it. It’s currently residing in the Notes app on my phone, but I’ll probably make a document on Ellipsus so it’s there.

This was fun to answer! I finally put my secret headcanons into words! Words that need warnings, lol.

Warnings for dubcon, noncon, and underage sex.

Viggo is promiscuous. He loves sex and knows how to get it. He’s, uh, not great about communication and consent with it, however. He manipulates his partners to get what he wants out of it.

I see Viggo as pansexual, but he has a preference for men. He’s had female partners and greatly enjoys that, but men generally catch his eye more.

I tend to think that Viggo got introduced to sex rather young. I can’t imagine his grandfather giving him The Talk™, and I headcanon his parents as both being deceased. He was 14 when he first had sex. An older boy, say, 17 or 18 took advantage of his naturally curious nature and “showed him the ropes.” It was a very toxic relationship that they kept a secret. They definitely took turns manipulating each other, or were just trying to outwit each other. Viggo didn’t like all the things this older guy had him do or had done to him.

And that is where Viggo’s kinkiness comes into play. This man is a fucking freak in bed and I will never be convinced otherwise. Sorry, but DreamWorks calling what he does to people “cruel and unusual punishments” just kind of solidified that idea for me.

But what Viggo had with this guy very much became hate sex. He would start tying Viggo up for sex, and Viggo, hating him, was left to imagine all the things he wanted to do to him and what ways he could make him suffer. (Also, not to start top/bottom discourse, but Viggo was definitely the bottom in this relationship. He really enjoys prostate stimulation, but doesn’t like the way it makes him feel out of control. He needs to be in control of the situation, and this guy was not letting him have any control whatsoever. [“This guy” needs a name, doesn’t he?])

Viggo pretty much kidnaps his partner one night and tries to live out all his fantasies. He gets so high off torturing him and drawing blood. He has this man exactly where he wants him, and he doesn’t waste the opportunity at all. It’s also his first time penetrating someone, and he has a great time with it.

Viggo does let his partner go, but only after swearing him to more secrecy. Nothing can get out about this.

And it doesn’t. Sure, there are rumors, but no one can be really sure what Viggo’s sex life is like. He’s about 16 now, in my head. Ryker definitely tries to talk to him about it, but Viggo is flippant and brushes him off.

Viggo’s partner never comes to him again after that night, and it makes Viggo feel like he won the game. The man goes off on a dragon hunt and never returns, but Viggo couldn’t care less. The only feelings he’d ever had were purely sexual. There was no emotional attachment.

And so, having been introduced to sex and liking being in control with it, Viggo starts to seduce and manipulate people. He has a lot of fun playing with them, be it sexually or mentally. I mean, he canonically thinks life is one big game and he’s the master moving all the pieces. (Okay, that’s actually a really fucking scary mindset when you put it into words like that. Holy shit, dude. Get some help.)

He definitely has a lot of different partners and doesn’t really stick to one person. He’s very noncommittal and will discard people when they no longer suit his needs or desires. He has bastard children that he doesn’t give a damn about, even if the mother comes to him asking for help and support, or to make their child his heir.

Ryker does learn about all of this and criticizes him for it. I imagine he learned it from one of the various new mothers coming to him after being refused by Viggo. Viggo, of course, always brushes off his criticisms and concerns. He’s chief now. He can do whatever he wants.
