“I didn’t know where else to go.”
[...]
“Tommy.” A shocked gasp, a question unasked. Sergeant Tozer, brow pinched with worry, and golden from the slight glow of candlelight, looks him up and down before he opens de whitewashed door further, a gust of hot air caressing his cheek like a stray ray of sun. “G’wed, lad, you’ll freeze to death out there!”
A year in the life of Thomas Armitage after he moved to a cottage in the South of England on the early days of spring 1850.

A bit that absolutely makes me melt AND hurt is:
During carnivale, Tommy is finishing eating something and wiping his hands - they're empty, he's not holding anything.
Meanwhile, Tozer has a spoon. He seems to be blowing on it. I was always like "yeah, he's eating something" and didn't really pay attention, since he's putting it to his mouth.
But in the next shot Tommy has the spoon and is giving whatever it is to Heather.
TOZER WAS MAKING SURE WHATEVER WAS ON THAT SPOON WAS COLD ENOUGH, HE WAS BLOWING ON IT AND PUTTING IT TO HIS LIPS TO MAKE SURE IT'S COLD ENOUGH IM GONNA CRY

Summary:
Tommy remembers the lads back home being interested, girls too, feeling the pull of that charisma every time a small circle gathered around Sol after dinner to hear him talk about the snow and the wild gangs and wilder creatures that could be found outside. Tommy remembers those nights, waiting in the wings, hearing his stories, feeling the pull of open air again before he felt the pull of the man himself.
After running away from an overcrowded London shelter in search of his mother and a taste of what lies on the surface of a frozen world, Tommy Armitage is forced to face two realities: One, that the world outside has changed beyond anything he knew before, and two, that the man he has been looking up to all these months has a lot more going on than he had ever given him credit for.
