Hey guys I'm gonna go on a small hiatus bc

1) work is eating me alive (but I'm making big money so its okay <3)

2) I'm obsessed with the german tv show "Das Boot" at the moment, problem is only me, my irl friend who recommended it to me, about 2 other people on here and probably a few german dads with questionable hyperfixations on WW2 have ever heard of it but I might need to start a sideblog for it anyway

First off: wow I'm flattered that my art gets to be your lockscreen (again sometimes I forget that tumblr isnt just The Void but theres actual people looking at and liking my stuff)

Second: yess I'll reopen commissions eventually, I'm still floored how fast the slots filled up haha, thank you again everyone. It'll be a while tho, I need to finish this batch first and although I expected it my summer job is kicking my ass which means almost no time for art unfortunately (including mermaid content, I will get to mermaid gore and dundy and all the rest eventually. Maybe. But also the weather here is very much not giving summer rn so im not feeling the summer vibes. ANYWAYS)

September will be pretty chill before I move again for uni so maybe I'll reopen commissions then, no promises tho I'll have to see how things progress :)

I thought about it since I've done a couple of animation meme/art trends that came from tiktok but I'm scared ppl I know irl will find my account (tiktok makes it fairly easy to find users in your contacts) plus I dont think I have the energy or the time to manage two social media channels (thats why I don't have a twitter or bluesky acc either, I think someone asked me that on here before)

Hello thank you for asking I was hoping for someone to ask about my thought process for that one lmao

The idea came to me while I was making coffee, my best ideas spawn randomly and fully formed in my head and that was one of those lmao

(It is 100% based on the animation meme thats going around on tiktok tho, I didn't come up with the concept myself. The song is called "В последний раз (For the Last Time)")

Started making it, I initially just made two versions per character, one where they have their eyes and mouth closed and one where both are open (I'm not animating actual lipsync bc i like to keep some of my sanity) but then I made two alternate version each (eyes open mouth closed/eyes closed mouth open) and thats when I started putting some thought into how and when everyone would have their eyes open or closed (more way too complex and deep thoughts about every pairing under the cut, turns out I have a lot more to say than I expected but I had enough time to let things marinate while at work lmao)

First off this is (sort of) from Croziers POV after the show ends, the others are his visions and he sees them how he last saw them or (in Ross' case) how he wants to remember them (there is a decent chance Crozier saw Ross' face while he went into in the tent with the netsilik leader but I think he'd want to keep the image of Ross safe and warm back in England since Ross vowed to his wife Anne to never set sail again as a condition for their marriage)

So first up is Sophie, both of them sing the lyrics, "time will pass and you'll forget everything that happened" which fits them both: For Crozier it's his fear that Sophie and her feelings for him (whatever they may be) will pass. I honestly haven't made up my mind about them, whether Crozier would want her to move on after it's clear he's never coming home, but I do believe he loved her and he loved him, just not the fact that he is a sailor. She sings the lyrics as well because she (a vision Crozier has made up) almost urges him to forget. "Forget me, please, you know this wouldn't have worked out", shes the embodiment of his doubts here. That's why she eventually closes her eyes, averting her gaze and shutting him out, trying to forget him but also wanting him to forget her

Now Ross, he (as someone figured out in the tags, shout-out to that person) never closes his eyes. He will never forget his best friend/lover/whatever really, he will never stop looking for him (at least figuratively), Crozier literally sees him sitting in the tent. But Crozier can't return, neither to Britain nor Ross himself so he shuts his eyes, turning his back on both in the end

James has his eyes open once he enters the frame while Crozier still has his shut, grieving Ross like he did at the beginning of the expedition, feeling lonely and depressed. James watches him from the beginning, first mockingly, then with the alcoholism gets bad with disgust, but eventually once they go for broke with admiration and eventually with love (platonic, romantic, anything goes). They're always intertwined, first as rivals, then as reluctant co-captains and finally as brothers (or lovers). That's when Crozier opens his eyes again and for a brief moment they're on the same page, they're brothers, just for them to close their eyes in unison again. James dies, assisted by Crozier, but they're in harmony

Now Jopson... the lyrics again, "No, I won't wait for you but know that I loved" argh absolutely made for him. While Crozier will never know when Jopson died and how he was left behind (did Dundy have his way and abandoned the ill right away or did they camp out there for longer, did Jopson ever hear that Crozier was kidnapped?), he will never know that Jopson thought his captain had abandoned him ("No, I won't wait for you"). Crozier feels responsible of course, he deeply cares about Jopson and knowing he failed him, the vision of Jopson closes his eyes in resentment and doesn't "speak" (i.e. sing the lyrics), punishing Crozier with eternal silence

Blanky... The only one who gets to smile because he's one of the few who chooses his own death. He's not happy (who would be in this situation) but he's content and at peace with himself, thats why he closes his eyes while Crozier keeps them open a while longer, not willing to let go of his closest friend

And finally Edward (side note I love how he turned out but it hurt like a bitch to draw him like that, again THE scene in the show where I was like "okay this is gonna haunt me forever huh"). I know it doesnt look that way but he doesn't sing the lyrics, his mouth is just pulled open a little by the chains. He takes one quick look at his captain (does he even recognize him anymore? Who knows) before closing (close. haha) his eyes forever. And so does Crozier, maybe the last nail in the coffin, cementing that he can never go home again after failing even the last, most loyal one of his men

OKAY THATS IT WOW that turned into a one person blunt rotation discussion circle but hey haven't actually debated the source material in a while so a win is a win ig
