Creators I love you but it's time to wake up
Among rumors about our tumblr user data being sold off to Midjourney/Generative AI, recent Extremely transphobic events (that have been ongoing) coming to a head, another extremely concerning internet censorship bill being pushed in upper levels of government, and a general air of frustration over how the site belongs to and is operated by perhaps the second stupidest CEO (second only to twitters own) of our age, I'm very done with the last few vestiges of what the old internet held for artists.
And if you're reading this, you probably are too.
I know we're tired. We are all tired. It is not always viable to pack up shop and move, again and again and again.
From tumblr to twitter to anywhere else we've ever grown up posting, things no longer work. Our audiences are kneecapped by aggressive and hostile algorithms, our reach is abysmal - if we aren't shadow-banned or silenced for one (transphobic) reason or another, we're thrust into an ever growing pit of hostility where the only thing that drives clicks is fighting and contention.
We're tired. We're so fucking tired. We aren't businesses, we aren't content mills, we cannot keep this pace that modern social media has set for us, to wring every ounce of creativity out of us to profit from and leave us rotting.
The key to staying afloat here, and I cannot stress this enough, is to stay connected to your peers.
Pack up and move as units if you must. Exodus from the sites that are killing us. Push your entire friend group of artists to move from one site to the next that promises you a kinder experience.
Art drives movements, it drives change, it is all that encompasses being human. If you take that away from the shitty places, they will be left with nothing but a cesspit of inhumanity and the people who follow you will be more incentivized than ever to move with you.
Yes, this is terrifying. There are no guarantees. There never was, and never are, and never will be.
But stay connected. Stay human.
Support each other and be willing to hold hands and jump when we all - as a group - need to jump from the flames we're all trying to convince ourselves wont kill us before rescue comes.
Rescue isn't coming, rescue will be found hand in hand with each other. I'm offering you my hand, please take it. There's always a new start, there are always helping hands reaching for you. You have to look up from the doom-scroll long enough to see and take them.

Also what if I said the show taking time to show that Luz and Hunter aren't unhealthily dependent on one another post time skip the way they were in thanks to them (but still close seen in Luz's patches on her clothes or Hunter taking time off work to go to Luz's bday) actually plays in to the cycle of sibling betrayal motif w/ the Clawthornes and Wittebanes????
#ramblings of a lunatic#the owl house#toh#luz noceda#hunter toh#bc like. both of the previous generations of siblings had incredibly small/non-existant support networks outside of each other#the wittebanes were orphans and bc Caleb was philips caretaker as well as his brother#(and also just kinda. a pattern with philip)#he loves caleb on the condition that he agrees with and stays with philip. and when Caleb stops meeting these conditions love is revoked#in the form of. yknow. murder and cloning and then murdering the clones#bc again it's less about the ambiguous abandonment and more about the 'living a life i don't agree with and therefore can't be part of-#-due to my own selfishness and bigotry' thing philips got going on#a mindset that would be understandable for a powerless child but is ridiculous coming from a 400 year old god king#Lilith is ALSO in a state of preoccupation and arrested development when we meet her!#the thing that drove a wedge between the Clawthorne sisters was the fact that they were no longer each others codependent supports#Eda had Raine and is clearly closer/at least gets more undivided attention from their parents#not that eda's life is all rainbows and sunshine- she's still an outcast. but she has people other than Lilith#everything we see from the gallery nucleus art to edas old photos portrays the hagsquad as eda's friendgroup. not Lilith's#and years later in s1 even when Lilith is at the top of the boiling isles social latter she's still hung up on Eda#both bc of her guilt but bc she seemingly has no friends who are also her equals#she wants her codependent support system back no matter the damage it'll cause to Eda#bc much like philip she's sort of in a state of arrested development#it's a theme with toh antagonists#the difference being Lilith tried to grow up too fast and was never able to move beyond her teenage conceptualisation of maturity#so she's good at pretending to be mature when really she's not#all this to say that Luz and Hunter don't have this problem outside of thanks to them when they're at their self-hate peak#luz has her mom her owl fam Amity Willow Gus. Hunter now has Camila Gus and Willow and eventually Darius#they don't NEED to be the only one the other can count on and bc of that they're not gonna lose their shit when the other does something-#-they feel they can't/don't want to be a part of#anyway I'm out of tags but. this was a good move writing wise actually even if i love their dynamic. we got a whole special abt them

Hi femme! I was wondering if you could do something about not talking shit and staying out of drama? Tysmmm I love what you do and you're so amazing <33
Hi love! Thank you so much! This comment made me smile from ear to ear <333
I would say there are a few easy motivators to opt out of gossiping/stay out of drama:
Staying silent in the realm of gossip/drama/people talking shit saves your reputation by default. Opting out of drama is one of the best PR campaigns you can implement for yourself. This strength allows you to pursue/strengthen opportunities, connections, and relationships with those who succumb to this low-brow energy and no longer have access due to their desire for instant gratification
Remember that any energy and time spent investing in drama/gossip correlates to less energy/time you can spend working on yourself, your goals, and the things you enjoy. With this in mind, involving yourself in gossip sounds like a lose-lose situation to me
Staying out of negativity will almost certainly lead you to be a more positive person by default. Like attracts like at the end of the day. Don't let other people's drama, hangups, or issues get you down. You deserve better than that
Hope this helps xx

2022 BOBABOARD ACHIEVEMENTS
As seen in last week’s retrospective, 2022 was a hard year (huge understatement). Today, let’s look at all we achieved anyway!
🔥Temporarily launched Realms
Realms are independent communities within BobaBoard, with their own dedicated admins who set up policies and shape the space. This year we made it possible to run multiple Realms on the platform, and launched our first (second) one: the Fandom Coders Realm!
Unfortunately, due to personal events, we had to make the hard choice to put a pause on Realms development to respect the well-being of our team and prioritize sustainability.
Not to worry, though: we picked the work back up at the end of 2022, and are currently in full development mode!
🔥Hired an open source management consultant: the incredible Sumana Harihareswara
Thanks to Sumana's patience and knowledge, the volunteer tech team found their rhythm as a collective, knocking out a series of themed sprints, holding bug-filing-and-categorizing sessions, and laying down our blueprints for collective design discussions.
You can see their feedback in the retrospective itself!
🔥Created Fandom Coders: Fandom Coders
Fandom Coders is our new community for fannish tech pros and coding hobbyists, which includes contributors from BobaBoard, AO3, Dreamwidth, and more! Members help each other get started, get unblocked, learn new skills, and (most importantly) always believe in each other!
You can see what they have to say in the retrospective itself!
And that's all for today!
If you want to learn even more, get the full lore drop by reading the 2022 Retrospective! And if you want to support our work, head down to the "how to help" section to learn more about all the different ways to get involved.
Next up later this week: our 2023 goals.

How to Subtly Push Back in a Negative Job Interview
My inspiration for this career guide is a hostile job interview a few years back. I fumbled it because I was unprepared.
Tumblr media
At the time, I was taking a break from the family business (I've since returned full-time), going out in the world and doing my own thing.
I met this business owner at a gala. I had already been aware of the company's reputation as one of the best in their field. We hit it off immediately. It turned out they were looking for a freelancer with my exact skillset for an ongoing project.
I went in for an interview a few days later. I tailored my presentation to their company and needs, as I usually do.
I made an effort to prepare. Overall, I expected smooth sailing as I had already made a good impression at the event. I was armed with tons of relevant experience, skills, and portfolio.
Long story short, the owner was absent that day. I was interviewed by other senior staff who, much to my surprise, went for the jugular: a stress interview.
Tumblr media
The problem was that we were discussing a freelance project, not a permanent position with the company.
In that context, the stress interview technique was misguided at best. It showed me that they didn't understand the freelance relationship and had unrealistic expectations. Working with this client would likely be a nightmare.
Freelancers have other options, and we are looking for clear, professional, and mutually respectful interactions.
That was definitely not the case.
I was just trying to get a feel for the project, but the interviewers seemed determined to neg me.
Tumblr media
I was angry at myself for fumbling that interview.
Not because they didn't choose me for the project. The interview was a huge red flag 🚩, so I was no longer interested in working with them anyway.
No, I disappointed myself by being powerless, not knowing how to push back in a professional way.
I was clueless as to how to defend myself without burning bridges. The latter is relevant because I might eventually have to deal with that company again in our family business.
I vowed to myself that the next time this happens (because it will), I will be prepared. So I brainstormed some sentences to flip the script when it's all stick and no carrot.
💬 1. Ask Direct Questions
"I’m sensing there are some concerns here. Could you share what specific qualities or experiences you’re looking for that you feel I might not meet?"
Translation: Let’s see if you can back up your negativity with something concrete.
Tumblr media
💬 2. Highlight Their Approach
"I’ve noticed this interview has focused a lot on challenges and potential negatives. Is there a particular reason for that?"
Translation: Why so serious? Let’s balance this conversation out a bit.
Tumblr media
💬 3. Turn the Question Around
If they hit you with something overly harsh, try, "That’s an interesting perspective. How does your team typically handle situations like this?"
Translation: Let’s talk about how you guys deal with these issues. I’m curious.
Tumblr media
💬 4. Reframe the Situation
"It sounds like this project has a lot of potential challenges. What support does the team offer to ensure success?"
Translation: If you’re so worried, how about telling me how you plan to help?
Tumblr media
💬 5. Emphasize Your Professional Standards
"I always strive to maintain a high standard of communication and professionalism in my work. What’s the typical communication style within your team?"
Translation: Let’s make sure we’re on the same page when it comes to professionalism.
Tumblr media
💬 6. Use Silence Strategically
After a particularly harsh question, pause before responding. Let the silence do the talking.
Translation: Silence can be louder than words—let them sit with their negativity for a moment.
Tumblr media
💬 7. Seek Clarification on Their Concerns
"It seems like there are some strong concerns about this role. Could you clarify what the biggest risks you see in bringing someone on for this project are?"
Translation: Spell out your concerns. Let’s see if they’re really justified.
Tumblr media
💬 8. Politely Challenge Assumptions
"I’m curious about the assumptions behind that question. Could you elaborate on what led you to ask that?"
Translation: What’s the real reason you’re grilling me here?
Tumblr media
💬 9. Redirect to Your Strengths
"I appreciate the focus on potential challenges. However, I’d love to highlight how my previous experience with [specific example] directly aligns with this role."
Translation: Let’s get back to what I bring to the table.
Tumblr media
💬 10. Exit Gracefully
"It seems like there may be a disconnect in expectations. I believe it’s important for both parties to feel positive about a collaboration. Perhaps it’s best if we reconsider if this is the right fit."
Translation: I have options. If you don’t see my value, I’m out.
Tumblr media
Use these techniques wisely, and you’ll not only navigate tough interviews with grace, but you might even leave the interviewer rethinking their approach.
After all, your career is all about knowing your worth and choosing who you want to work with. ✨

It took me a really long time, almost 2 years, to finally get up and actually go to my local game dev drink up. It was just something that was so intimidating to me, and I couldn’t fathom going to them alone. I was experiencing a lot of imposter syndrome as someone who’s actually still a student and hasn’t worked in the industry yet.
But then I went for the first time last January and I’ve missed 2 or 3 since. The second Thursday of every month has become one of my most anticipated days because I get to go to a bar and talk to a bunch of nerds who like the things I like. I’ve become friends with people because of this event. I’ve made connections with people that I don’t want to lose, not because they feel valuable to me as an opportunity for work but because I will genuinely miss getting to talk to everyone.
So moral of the story for anyone nervous about attending events like this. You’re walking into a room full of nerds so nerdy they decided to make a career out of it. You can walk into a group of people and be like “so what games has everyone been playing recently?” And boom you will be locked into and hour long conversation with people telling you about the things they love. Most times I end up standing on the street for an hour and a half after the bar closes because we don’t want to stop talking!

How To Improve Your Social Skills 💬🥂📱✨
Pay close attention when others are speaking. Show that you're engaged in what they are saying, maintain eye contact, and providing verbal cues like "I see" or "interesting." Ask questions.
Good eye contact shows interest in the conversation. But avoid staring excessively in a frozen state, as it can make others uncomfortable.
A warm smile and open body language can make others feel more comfortable around you.
Work on your conversational skills, including starting and ending conversations, asking open ended questions, and finding common topics of interest.
Try to understand and empathize with the feelings and perspectives of others. This helps create trust.
Small talk is essential for building rapport. Practice starting conversations with light, non controversial topics and gradually steer them toward more meaningful subjects.
Confidence is key to effective social interaction. Work on building your self esteem and self confidence through self affirmations and positive self talk.
If you experience social anxiety, try deep breathing exercises or, visualization. Try to focus your attention on something. I used to have a lot of social anxiety so I would hold a drink in my hand to keep me centered and focused.
Familiarize yourself with cultural and social norms to ensure you're behaving appropriately in different situations so you don't look out of place or rude.
Social skills are like any other skills; they improve with practice. Start with friends or in less intimidating social settings to build your confidence.
Pay attention to nonverbal cues such as body language, facial expressions, and tone of voice. These signals often convey more than words.
Avoid dominating conversations. Give others the chance to speak and actively listen when it's their turn.
Show respect for others by using polite language, saying "please" and "thank you," and being considerate of their feelings and opinions.
Having a broad range of interests and knowledge can give you more to talk about and connect with others over. Learn, learn, learn.
Ask friends for feedback on your social skills. They can help pin point areas you can improve upon.
Join clubs, groups, or activities that relate to your interests. This helps you meet new people and practice social skills in a comfortable setting.
Observe individuals with strong social skills and learn from their interactions. Note how they engage with others and start to incorporate some of their techniques.
