How to Use Social Media Effectively
Social media is a tool for connection, not for competition.— Gary Vaynerchuk Social media is a powerful tool that can be used to connect with friends, family, and colleagues, share information, and build relationships. However, it can also be a time-sink and a source of stress. If you want to use social media effectively, it’s important to set some goals and create a plan. Set goals for…

A federal judge on Monday threw out a lawsuit by Elon Musk’s X that had targeted a watchdog group for its critical reports about hate speech on the social media platform. In a blistering 52-page order, the judge blasted X’s case as plainly punitive rather than about protecting the platform’s security and legal rights. “Sometimes it is unclear what is driving a litigation,” wrote District Judge Charles Breyer, of the US District Court for the Northern District of California, in the order’s opening lines. “Other times, a complaint is so unabashedly and vociferously about one thing that there can be no mistaking that purpose.” “This case represents the latter circumstance,” Breyer continued. “This case is about punishing the Defendants for their speech.” X’s lawsuit had accused the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH) of violating the company’s terms of service when it studied, and then wrote about, hate speech on the platform following Musk’s takeover of Twitter in October 2022. X has blamed CCDH’s reports, which showcase the prevalence of hate speech on the platform, for amplifying brand safety concerns and driving advertisers away from the site. In the suit, X claimed that it had suffered tens of millions of dollars in damages from CCDH’s publications. CCDH is an international non-profit with offices in the UK and US. Because of its potential to destroy the watchdog group, the case has been widely viewed as a bellwether for research and accountability on X as Musk has welcomed back prominent white supremacists and others to the platform who had previously been suspended when the platform was still a publicly-traded company called Twitter.

I breathe alternative air
As someone who cares about software, the internet, user interfaces, design, and patterns of political and social power choosing a social network to use is a part of my identity as much as the clothing I wear, or what I choose to eat. It baffles me that it seems most people don't really see it as a decision or a reflection of who they are.
When I talk about alternatives to big social networks it's like I'm saying "why do you breathe air? it's problematic, I breathe alternative air..."
My point is I don't think most people see social networks as something they have a choice about. And to some degree this is true.
I'll see some news item about how this or that was "trending on X" and even if it's a trend I like or find funny what is the point? It's *on X* ...
I wonder of news orgs understand how much business they drive to X simply by talking about what's happening there as if it mattered.
I dare ya'll reporters to report about what is happening HERE. That would help.

My Ongoing Chill Time Off Tumblr + Hope For Future Organizing
I participated in the poorly planned tumblr strike. Which made me very happy! I like to see users starting to become more disillusioned to the site. And during my break it got me thinking I don’t really like tumblr as an app that much as is. And I’ve experienced a lot of Harrassment, discouragement, and abuse while just trying to speak my mind and it’s very unpleasant for me and tumblr has done nothing to ease that pain. And though I’m not planning on deleting my account anytime soon just yet I think I’m gonna become more serious in becoming less active and keep and open mind to deletion. Also if organizers from the strike I participated in want my help for anything I’ll try to stay as available as possible because I want to help see that strike develop into something beautiful. Until then I would like to communicate I don’t think tumblr has to be a site that’s for profit and collects our data and targets ads at it’s user base to run. And I want to see more change from the internet landscape especially not tolerating cyberbullying which I’ve seen much of online. Until then way less use of the mobile app from me and I’ll be using software to protect myself from the vulnerabilities of dangerous adware. While reminding myself there’s always a possibility for big change to come. I committed 48 hours but I don’t mind committing more of my time in the future.

Lots of reactions to today’s Staff post, so here’s another one in the ring.
I’m not so alarmist as to think that the changes Staff laid out today are going to kill tumblr, I think they’ll annoy most of us and drop a few users but ultimately blow over because they’re less egregious than what every other site is up to right now. Also, even though I don’t like the changes, I do like the way Staff is publicizing them.
But I do see a clear pattern in Tumblr’s recent moves - bolder merchandise marketing via Emporium, scrambling for engagement metrics with Tumblr Live, more aggressive prompts to sign in to see content, etcetera. Some members of staff have even publicly said outright that tumblr needs to start making money. What this pattern tells me is that Tumblr as a business entity has probably been given a deadline by which to become profitable or at least financially break even, and what we’re seeing is an aggressive push to meet that goal.
I don’t think Tumblr is going to work out the secret recipe to profitable social media, nobody except Facebook ever has, and nobody else is in the niche that Facebook is in. The secret recipe probably just doesn’t exist outside of that niche. Everything else that any of us do on social media is costing somebody a TON of money that they want to one day recoup.
So my guess is that Tumblr is going to shut down in the near future, not because of these unpopular changes but the other way around.

yk in the event that kosa does pass the senate and the house and the president and everything becomes the worst of the worst like i’ve been seeing, I’ll try to have counter-measures. from what i’ve read in the bill, while it would impact a social media site like tumblr, it doesn’t seem to impact non-profits like ao3 or email services…i would try to find a way to keep posting on ao3 & keep in contact even if i can’t be on tumblr anymore

Nona's Rage: Hurricanes, Celebrities, and the Illusion of a Bullet Train - HWSR Ep 94
In this lively episode of the He's Wrong She's Right podcast, ‘Nona's Rage, Hurricanes, Celebrities, and the Illusion of a Bullet Train - HWSR Ep 94’, hosts Andrew Lemacks and Nona Phelps cover an extensive range of topics, sometimes with comedic flair. They dive into the impact of hurricanes on the US, the peculiar rise and fall of celebrity reputations, and a surprising story of confusion between beverages. Nona vents her frustrations about government responses to domestic crises, exploring the irony of budget allocations. The duo also discusses the misleading excitement over Amtrak's new 'Bullet Train' service, only to reveal its non-bullet-speed reality. Packed with amusing and heated exchanges, this episode is a rollercoaster of current events and cultural commentary.

Good Night Lights: A Magic Minute to Brighten Spirits
Promoting on various social media platforms for non-profits is an absolute must. Non-profits use social media to reach a larger audience and get messages and stories out to the public fast. Growing a bigger following on social media calls for more donations and or volunteers for many non-profits especially the amazing local ones we have here in the ocean state. Hasbro Children’s Hospital has been able to help so many families here in Rhode Island for decades and are always in need of donations. There are various non-profits and programs to donate to or volunteer for here at Hasbro Children’s Hospital.
One of Hasbro’s most popular non-profits amongst us Rhode Islanders is ‘Good Night Lights’. Good Night Lights started after long-time hospital “resident cartoonist” Steve Brosnihan wished the children staying in the hospital a goodnight by blinking lights on his bicycle as he left for the evening. Now nightly here in Providence, Rhode Island residents from all over the smallest state gather around the hospital creating different beautiful light displays. This local tradition has since then gathered local restaurants, hotels, police and fire departments as well as the famous Brown University to help brighten the nights of the children undergoing treatments here at Hasbro.
Good Night Lights has an amazing Facebook page with 8.6k followers and 8k likes for the page itself. For a non-profit organization having just over eight thousand followers is great business. However, the number of likes varies greatly throughout the different posts ranging between 10-40 likes per post. Many of their posts have a decent number of reactions, shares and comments, most of them coming from people sharing their own experiences with Good Night Lights. Their posts on Facebook are more information based rather than focusing on the entertainment aspect of the organization. Good Night Lights' most popular posts throughout their Facebook page are the ones where they share information about their nightly event including locations and who will be in attendance. These posts gather lots of traction and make residents want to participate in this good cause. Good Night Lights’ Instagram does not get the same amount of love that their Facebook does unfortunately. With a total of 43 posts and 1,964 Instagram followers they could be doing a lot better than they currently are. The number of likes on their Instagram posts varies from 20 to about 300 likes per post. Some of the pictures are very beautiful and eye-catching that fit the theme of what Good Night Lights is all about, however there are a few unnecessary posts that do not fit the theme of their organization.
There is always room for improvement though and here are a few things they should consider changing or focusing more on. What caught my eye the most on their Facebook were the colorful informative flyers they would create digitally for their more special events such as the boat parade. Using these digital flyers is a great way to spread information fast while simultaneously keeping/getting people’s attention. Good Night Lights should be using this technique to their advantage because colorful unique digital flyers attract people more than a regular paragraph posted to Facebook. This is a great simple easy way to get people informed about the event and to quickly spread the information around by just using a digital flyer that your followers are able to either repost or screenshot. Some channel metrics they could focus on for Facebook specifically should be their engagement and demographics. This will help Good Night Lights keep track of their interactions through their likes, comments, shares, and reactions. But it will also help them understand what towns and surrounding areas their volunteers are coming from. For their Instagram I think Good Night Lights (if they are allowed and of course with parents' permission) should share the children's stories. Good Night Lights is all about creating fun and positive memories for the children at Hasbro Children’s Hospital, and I want to hear from them! I want to see what creative things the kids are coming up with to brighten up their hospital rooms to participate with Good Night Lights. For their Instagram Good Night Lights will one hundred percent benefit from looking at their behavioral metrics. This will help the organization see who is interacting with their posts. They would be able to tell who is watching their stories or sharing and interacting in the comment sections. A huge part to behavioral metrics is also seeing who is clicking links in your bio and if your followers are clicking links that can either take you to other social media platforms the organization is located on or to their website.
Hasbro Children’s Hospital has many different amazing programs that are always in need of support. Located below is a link directly to the hospital's website where you can donate and learn more about their programs! 🤍 🏥

A Place of second chances!
Villalobos Rescue Center in New Orleans, LA is a place for second chances not only for dogs but for parolees that want to change their lives around for the better. This facility's sole income depends 100% on donations and volunteering from the public as they go through over 4,000 pounds of dog food a week and the cost is approximately $10,000 a day to run the entire shelter as stated on their website. https://www.vrcpitbull.com/about/#:~:text=VRC%20works%20ceaselessly%20to%20give,they%20may%20eventually%20be%20adopted. Villalobos
In order to get these donations Villalobos Rescue Center has various social media accounts included Facebook, Instagram and Twitter to get the word out for the need of donations and volunteer work. Although the shelter has aired on TV for over 14 years, social media has been a huge impact for them spreading the word on available adoptions and events going on in the facility weekly. I think this facility does a great job with the advertisement on all their current social media accounts. With over 5-6 posts a day on Facebook and 1.8 million followers following the page I believe this has helped this facility tremendously over the years. Every post that is posted on Facebook normally gets around 3,000 likes and over 300 comments making this a huge opportunity to get their name out in the public to help this cause and inform other people of the situation. From posts about available dogs up for a adoption to posts asking the public for volunteers I think they are super on top of every platform. The amount of video content posted is super effective in my eyes as a Facebook follower of them myself. I enjoy the videos and love seeing some of these dogs getting adopted and I believe this also brings joy to other followers as well. In this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HOblgPhLrTY it shows how it is never too late for anyone or anything to get a second chance at life. Youtube has also been a huge benefit for this organization for other people to see just exactly the outcomes of non profit organizations and how you can also help and be a part of them.
In 2020 Villalobos Rescue Center partnered with Chewy.com and created wish lists so that customers can purchase things for the dogs and have them shipped directly to the shelter. I think this is genius and a very huge engagement for others to help that don't live in that area and want to be part of the cause. On the website https://www.chewy.com/g/villalobos-rescue-center-pets-in-the-hood_b73319877?fbclid=IwY2xjawFP05RleHRuA2FlbQIxMAABHcVN_aGJFbbvvP7YlcyI6Pr1F4Oepdic2sO4Z53GoFQJxbrcXqROoHH81Q_aem_P-49lL4PXgvmktbTNQwCKA you can choose items you would like to buy and have shipped for the dogs. This was probably the smartest thing I think any shelter could do as far as donations besides having all the social media platforms.
On the other hand I think the Instagram page Villalobos Rescue Center has could use a little more posting maybe as far as making more videos on their Instagram stories or making reels of the dogs or the adoption process so people could better understand how the facility manages things. Reels are 'short film' videos that are very popular with all ages of people that are Instagram users. Reels would help more engagement to their page to connect with different types of crowds around the world.
Now lets get to the website. The website is perfectly displayed with clear colorful pictures of the dogs and workers. It is professionally done and easily instructed for people to navigate through and understand clearly. There are many advanced metrics like network health and channel metrics like social referrals on their website but maybe there could be more behavioral metrics like customers experiences posted on the website for others to see. Having customers experiences posted on the website could really help more because people now a days like to see reviews about products before they buy them so I think this would kind of be the same sense. Some people may not know a lot about certain organizations and I think coming from previous customers it would help other people better understand non profit organizations. I really think Villalobos does a excellent job on advertising the need for help o all their platforms of media and I think they have a strong team behind them to monitor and keep all those platforms up and running.

To the people in the OTW Tumblr Inbox asking about how the OTW is responding to the American Election.
This is a separate post (and not a response to a specific message) because we all need to see it.
Folks have been asking Support (through the form) as well as the other social media mods, and we have now been given the following to tell you.
We are continuing to closely monitor political developments that may affect AO3 and the OTW as a whole. First, we want to assure you that there are several factors that tend to protect AO3 and its users from legal risks and challenges. These include that we are a non-profit, do not host images, do not use algorithms to promote or advertise content to users, are not aimed at children, and collect very little user data. The results of the 2024 U.S. election are deeply concerning, but the OTW remains committed to providing an inclusive space for fannish expression and will continue to fight for fans' free expression, both in court and through legislative efforts, in the U.S. and worldwide. We have seen that fans are a powerful force for promoting free expression, and we will continue to inform people about opportunities for their voices to be heard. If a bill is likely to be passed in the future that could impact our ability to provide services, our legal team will be prepared to offer updates, guidance, and legal support to our users. Fans are not alone in this fight. Both the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) (https://www.aclu.org/news/civil-liberties/the-aclu-is-fighting-back-against-trump ) and the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) (https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2024/11/2024-us-election-over-eff-ready-whats-next ) made preparations for this outcome and have developed strategies to combat anticipated efforts to curtail online freedoms. We urge our users to support these organizations and others as they fight for your rights and ours.

During the 2008 recession, my aunt lost her job. Her, her partner, and my three cousins moved across the country to stay with us while they got back on their feet. My house turned from a family of four to a family of nine overnight, complete with three dogs and five cats between us.
It took a few years for them to get a place of their own, but after a few rentals and apartments, they now own a split level ranch in a town nearby. I’ve lost track of how many coworkers and friends have stayed with them when they were in a tight spot. A mother and son getting out of an abusive relationship, a divorcee trying to stay local for his kids while they work out a custody agreement, you name it. My aunt and uncle knew first hand what that kindness meant, and always find space for someone who needed it, the way my parents had for them.
That same aunt and uncle visited me in [redacted] city last year. They are prolific drinkers, so we spent most of the day bar hopping. As we wandered the city, any time we passed a homeless person, my uncle would pull out a fresh cigarette and ask them if they had a light. Regardless of if they had a lighter on hand or not, he offered them a few bucks in exchange, which he explained to me after was because he felt it would be easier for them to accept in exchange for a service, no matter how small.
I work for a company that produces a lot of fabric waste. Every few weeks, I bring two big black trash bags full of discarded material over to a woman who works down the hall. She distributes them to local churches, quilting clubs, and teachers who can use them for crafts. She’s currently in the process of working with our building to set up a recycling program for the smaller pieces of fabric that are harder to find use for.
One of my best friends gives monthly donations to four or five local organizations. She’s fortunate enough to have a tech job that gives her a good salary, and she knows that a recurring donation is more valuable to a non-profit because they can rely on that money month after month, and can plan ways to stretch that dollar for maximum impact. One of those organizations is a native plant trust, and once she’s out of her apartment complex and in a home with a yard, she has plans to convert it into a haven of local flora.
My partner works for a company that is working to help regulate crypto and hold the current bad actors in the space accountable for their actions. We unfortunately live in a time where technology develops far too fast for bureaucracy to keep up with, but just because people use a technology for ill gain doesn’t mean the technology itself is bad. The blockchain is something that she finds fascinating and powerful, and she is using her degree and her expertise to turn it into a tool for good.
I knew someone who always had a bag of treats in their purse, on the odd chance they came across a stray cat or dog, they had something to offer them.
I follow artists who post about every local election they know of, because they know their platform gives them more reach than the average person, and that they can leverage that platform to encourage people to vote in elections that get less attention, but in many ways have more impact on the direction our country is going to go.
All of this to say, there’s more than one way to do good in the world. Social media leads us to believe that the loudest, the most vocal, the most prolific poster is the most virtuous, but they are only a piece of the puzzle. (And if virtue for virtues sake is your end goal, you’ve already lost, but that’s a different post). Community is built of people leveraging their privileges to help those without them. We need people doing all of those things and more, because no individual can or should do all of it. You would be stretched too thin, your efforts valiant, but less effective in your ambition.
None of this is to encourage inaction. Identify your unique strengths, skills, and privileges, and put them to use. Determine what causes are important to you, and commit to doing what you can to help them. Collective action is how change is made, but don’t forget that we need diversity in actions taken.

AO3 Etiquette -UPDATED
Based on both decent and not so decent replies, I have made some changes to my original post below.
It would seem a whole new kind of AO3 reader/writer is emerging and it is becoming clear not everyone quite understands how the website community works. Here is some basic guidance on how most people expect you to go about using AO3 to keep this a fun community archive that funtions correctly:
As well as likes, kudos is for when the story was interesting enough to make you finish reading. If it sucked or was badly written, you probably left. If you finished it, you liked it - so kudos.
If you really liked it, you should try to comment. It can be long and detailed or a literal keysmash. Writers don't care, we just love comments.
No critisism unless the author has specifically asked or agreed to hear it (so use your notes to say if you want some constructive feedback). Even constructive critisism is a no-no unless an author note tells you it's okay. No, posting it online is not an open invitation for that. Many people write as a fun hobby or a way to cope with, among other things, insecurity and just want to share. Don't ruin that for them. I've seen so many authors just stop writing coz they can't handle the negative emotions the critism brings, and it's only meant to be a fun thing shared for free (pointing out tagging errors is not included in this).
Do not comment to ask the author to write/update something else. It's tacky and off-putting and will probably have the opposite effect than the one you want.
There is no algorithm, it's an archive. Use the search and filter function to add/remove the pairings/characters/tropes etc. you want to read about and it will find you the fics that fit the bill.
For this to work, writers must tag and rate stories. This avoids readers finding the wrong things and missing the stuff they want. I don't care how cringy that trope is in your eyes - it gets tagged.
The tag exception is if you don't want to tag a million things or spoil your story, you can rate it as "chose not to use warnings," and maybe tag the bare minimum.
Don't censor tags. How can someone exclude a tag if the word isn't typed out correctly? There are no content bans for terms so don't censor them.
If the tags are mostly content/trigger warnings, especially if they are things considered very fucked up or graphic, you might want to use "dead dove - do not eat" to ensure people know that you're not messing around with tags and what they get is exactly what you've warned them about.
Character A/Character B means a ROMANTIC or SEXUAL relationship of some kind. Character A&Character B is PLATONIC, like friendship or family.
Nothing is banned. This is an rule because banning one thing is a slipperly slope to banning another and another, until nothing is allowed anymore. Do not expect anyone to censor for you. Because of the tags system, you are responsible for your own reading experience.
People can create new chapters and sequels/fic series any time after they "complete" a story. So it's considered perfectly normal to subscribe, even to a finished story. You can even subscribe to the author instead just to cover your bases.
Do not repost stories or change the publishing date without an extremely good reason (like a complete top to bottom rewrite or an exchange youve written for going public). It's an archive, not social media. No one cares what's the most recent, only what fits their tag needs.
Instead of deleting a story you wrote if you hate it - consider making it anonymous or orphaning it so others can still enjoy it, without it being connected to your name anymore. If you still want to delete it, fair enough.
It's come to my attention that metaworks ARE allowed on AO3, which is something I wasn't aware of. So if you do post an essay or theory, please tag it as such so others can choose to search for it or exclude it. Art is also allowed.
The only reason this archive works is because NON ONE PROFITS. Do not link to your ko-fi or patreon or mention monetary gain in any way or you violate the terms and risk having your account removed. If anyone does link, it leaves the archive open to people claiming it's for profit and having the whole thing removed.
I KNOW there's plenty more I missed but I'm trying to cover most of the basics that people seem to be struggling with.
I invite anyone to add to this, but please explain, don't berate.
