the trump administration is already slowly taking away our rights, no longer legally recognizing us and only seeing two genders in america — male and female — and passports no longer taking new gender maker changes or x gender markers. this is just the start of it most likely
they've erased mentions of LGBTQ on government websites and removed pages related to honoring nex benedict and matthew shepard, like they never existed. we know they existed though and we need to keep both nex benedict and matthew shepard's names alive and remember what horrible violence and hate crime took them away from us.
this is not to scare anyone. this is to inform the masses on what our government is doing. censorship is actively happening around us. do you know the world is protesting for us? no? the united states have already started their censorship, their propaganda for this administration. do not let them censor us and hide us from the truth. speak up, learn, adapt, and inform others.

We Need An IQ Test For The Internet
If you can't throw a simple HTML site up on Neocities or GitHub or set up and manage a private online forum, there is good reason to think you shouldn't be online.
There are two reasons why I draw this conclusion.
1. If we think back to when all the trouble and chaos on the Internet started, it seems to stem from the rise of large online companies and social media platforms that made it their business model - in full or in part - to help people get online, i.e, establish a web presence. This entails the logical conclusion that such individuals were unable or unwilling to do the work done by earlier internet adopters of figuring out how to launch a basic HTML website or private forum themselves. In other words, people who can't be bothered with learning things. You know, "busy" people, perhaps. People who didn't necessarily see the early internet as an intriguing piece of technology but more as a growing social trend that triggered their FOMO.
Hence, the establishment of visual CMS and cookie-cutter social profile pages by big companies and small entrepreneurs with dollar signs in their eyes to help such individuals "get online".
And that's where the trouble started.
2. It's probably a good bet to conclude, that people who can't be bothered to learn a new technology and yet feel entitled or rewarded with the ability to participate in its community and environment, probably feel entitled to participate in other areas of public knowledge and exchange such as, oh, I don't know, politics, without doing the same degree of work to master that new environment as earlier entrees.
And that is how we arrive at the present toxic state of the Internet where poorly vetted misinformation and plain dumb opinions are churned out in mass, every day, by a huge demographic of, frankly, unintelligent masses that needed help to get online to share their unschooled and vial takes in the first place.
Helping people get online who are too lazy to research and learn how to do it themselves, was the mistake that led to the toxic Internet and culture we see today. We have given online bullhorns and virtual podiums to people who can't be bothered personally to figure out technology, proper and healthy forms of human relationship, interaction and exchange or productive and respectful democratic politics.
In short, we removed the IQ test required to have an online web presence. Think of what it would have saved us if no company or entrepreneur had stepped forward and made it so easy for anyone to get online.
If you can't be bothered to learn HTML to get yourself online, what else can't you be bothered to learn? Evolution? Political history?
People adverse to educating themselves on principle in areas they, nonetheless, choose to participate, but can't be bothered with learning how to set up a simple HTML page or private online forum, would have never been able to generate so much virtual pollution. They would have never gotten online to spout and spread their misinformation and garbage takes and, it follows, our communities, culture and the Internet would have been the better for it.
The sins of these large online companies and social media platforms run vast and deep and it will take decades to unearth and identify them all.

My mom is a pretty extreme leftist, but I’m somehow so leftist that she’s skeptical of my views more often than not for just how radical they are. I guess I’ve had a bit too much internet or something.

I never feel more redpilled than when people say "I watch the Super Bowl for the commercials, I don't care about football." Like if you're watching for the halftime show, fair. Football fields are for band practice, after all. But like hooolllly shit talk about consumerism/sucking up to corporate. Talk about cultural capture. I think that everyone is capable of being good and that acting superior for sociopolitical issues is bad on many levels, but in that moment I have seen the glory and you all are sheeple. Sorry

and he just signed a 75 day extension on top of a lot of shitty, racist, transphobic, and awful executive orders. people are going to focus on the tiktok extension instead of him targeting minorities and letting his fucking cult members who ATTACKED THE CAPITAL out of jail.
the whole tiktok situation is EXACTLY why media literacy and education on propaganda is so important. the notifications about tiktok going down and then coming back use VERY propagandistic language, and with a literal fascist coming into power in the us tomorrow we need to be even more critical of the information we’re consuming and stay on the lookout for political stunts like this

What Trump Has Done So Far
[PT: What Trump Has Done So Far / END PT]
trump has signed a lot of executive orders, this includes the one i mentioned previously about establishing the binary in america, that there are only "two genders recognized under american law: male and female." with the additional fact of taxpayer dollars could not go to "transitional services."
he also signed 11 immigration related executive orders, including "declaring a national emergency as it relates to the southern border, redefining the term birthright citizenship, clarifying the military’s role in border security, suspending refugee resettlement, ending asylum and closing the border for asylum seekers, restarting title 42, and ending the catch and release policy for mexico."
on top of this, he pardoned over 1,500 january 6th defendants and ordered the release of all january 6th defendants tonight.
but hey, 75 day extension of tiktok right? this is what we wanted right? /sarc
FUCK TRUMP.

American pulling out of WHO: good, bad or unclear?
Confused by politicized talk regarding the World Health Organization? Take a breathe and have a calm read of basic facts so you can decide for yourself.
Every newly-elected president enters office with the intent of making the changes they campaigned on. When they do, in many cases the changes relate to subjects and organizations I don’t know much about, and therefore can’t determine if the change is a good or bad thing, or somewhere in the middle. A case in point is last week when President Trump started the process of pulling America out of…

who would be the "most responsible" candidate for the role of governor in the upcoming gubernatorial elections., we can examine some of the notable candidates and their qualifications for the two states holding gubernatorial elections in 2025: New Jersey and Virginia.
## New Jersey
Several candidates with diverse backgrounds are running for governor in New Jersey:
1. Josh Gottheimer: A U.S. Representative since 2017, Gottheimer co-chairs the bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus and focuses on lowering the cost of living and cutting wasteful spending[3].
2. Mikie Sherrill: A former Navy helicopter pilot and federal prosecutor, Sherrill has been named New Jersey's most effective House member in 2023 by the Center for Effective Lawmaking[3].
3. Jack Ciattarelli: A former state assemblyman and the 2021 Republican nominee for governor, Ciattarelli has previous experience running for this office[3][4].

It's been very frustrating to come to terms with the fact that the left and the right are reflections of each other. The morals are as far apart as they can be, but both sides are dominated by people who lack the desire to think critically and examine their own beliefs. They use their own supposed superior morals (obviously i think "superior morals" on the right is total dogshit, but that's how they see it) to excuse themselves from mentally engaging with anything they don't immediately agree with, especially when that thing may challenge their beliefs. This is a recipe for stagnation and fails to affect anything except for your own self-superiority.
If you refuse to let yourself engage with something you don't agree with, how can you ever know you're right? You're only ever trying to understand the side of the story with which you already agree.
starting to hate how people use the word problematic. "don't support this person they're problematic" "dni if ur problematic" "they're literally problematic" what does problematic mean here? wtf is it supposed to convey? it's so goddamn vague and it doesn't tell me anything, it could literally mean either "has an opinion on pride flag discourse that i disagree with" or "actively grooming minors" and i wouldn't be able to tell which one was the intended meaning without asking for further information, which most of the time i'm probably not going to interact with these people more than once so i don't wanna go through the trouble of doing that, i hate it so much goddamnit.

if i were to pick only three to add to my read list, i think i'd choose:
Divided: Racism, Medicine and Why We Need to Decolonise Healthcare by Annabel Sowemimo (Wellcome Collection/Profile)
Empire of Normality: Neurodiversity and Capitalism by Robert Chapman (Pluto)
Mad World: The Politics of Mental Health by Micha Frazer-Carroll (Pluto)
click thru to read the long list!
as a side note: due to pain/fatigue, etc., i don't get out much at all. so, i've only been in Lighthouse a couple of times over the years. but! the vibe was absolutely the best, and the online events i've attended have been enlightening.
i hope that you all have an equally awesome activist bookshop either where you live or at least within enough of a distance that it's accessible even a handful of times a year.
Extract:
The judges for the Bread and Roses Award for Radical Publishing are delighted to announce the 2024 longlist!
The Bread and Roses Award, presented by the Alliance of Radical Booksellers with admin support from Lighthouse books, celebrates radical, accessible, politically-left non-fiction which offers new perspectives and insight. Over 60 books were sent by publishers for consideration, from publishing houses big and small across the industry including Verso, Saqi, Profile, Repeater, and Hajar Press.
The books chosen this year cover a wide array of topics which are critical to the present political discussion in the UK. Among them are social inequality, Britain’s place in global political conflicts, health politics, the mental health impact of climate change, marginalised histories of identity, feminism for all, and the experience of forced displacement and refuge. [...]
The shortlist for the Bread and Roses Award will be announced on 17 June 2024.
