Lukola friends - these aren't the only Anons to reach out to me these past days, but they'll be the only ones I'm going to respond to publicly. I decided to share evidence of their troll campaign so that you could rest easy in the knowledge that the Lutonia's (edited to add: and Jakolas [see P.S. below]) are panicked. They saw what we saw at the BOSS event and the pieces don't fit their "hot couple in love" narrative.

A situation that didn't make sense given the lack of contact between Antonia & Luke since the end of July,

A petrified Antonia who wasn't professionally styled, as though she wasn't a priority,

An angry and disgruntled Luke who cast Antonia's hand aside, then looked like he wasn't happy to be photographed with her,

Luke's eventual (3 days later) black screened IG story with a black heart (macabre!) and a link that required two navigation clicks to get to TT so that the viewer could watch a reel that listed Antonia as "guest".

To my way of thinking, the whole "date" was an orchestrated PR stunt aimed at deflecting gaze away from Nicola & their treasure during a time when the utmost privacy was desired by both her and Luke.

So the Lutonia/Jakola anon troll's strategy? Push us when they perceive us to be down in the hopes that we don't get up. Hit out with verbiage meant to feed doubts they think we have. They also (and I love this because it's so fucking hilarious!) work soooo hard to link obvious Nicola and Polin "Lady Whistledown" references to their sinking ships. Silly gooses. And of course they ignore that Luke has never claimed or clarified Antonia's status in his life... even now, after the BOSS event.

The trolling behaviour doesn't phase me in the least. I don't have doubts they can crush with their silliness. Nicola and Luke are soulmates. End of statement.

So troll anons: why not head back to your sinking USS Lutonia or USS Jakola and cast off for home before your ship sinks to the bottom of the ocean. Now here is a couple that I take actual fandom credit for.

Like, I'm sure someone would have figured it out eventually! The subtext is so there and so intentional, modern fandom would surely have caught on. But back in the day when I first read the New Mutants (which was *not* when it first came out, the comics ran from the 80s and as you've doubtless noticed most of my Formative Ships are closer to y2k) my immediate reaction was "WOW that's gay" followed by a surprise that the fandom, as I could find it at the time, didn't seem to have any idea! (They're literally soulmates??)

... partly because much more recent comics had split them up and gone in other directions but I didn't care I wasn't reading those.

If you're unfamiliar, super-quick overview: Danielle is Cheyenne and originally has a bit of a chip on her shoulder because she's sick of dealing with racists. Her mutant power is projecting visions of your fears and desires. Rahne is a couple of years younger, a Scottish girl raised by an abusive preacher who therefore has SERIOUS religious guilt issues about absolutely everything. Her mutant power is being a werewolf (which she also fears is a sin). They share a psychic connection when Rahne is in wolf form, they're best friends, they call each other soulmates, they're very protective of each other, they touch a lot, and they got very close to saying "I love-" before being cut off by events.

ANYWAY we assembled our list of "Claremont, who loves lesbians and slipping them past the editors, absolutely intended these two, here's the evidence" and circulated it amidst the mailing lists and usenet groups of the time. Over the years I've seen many people I don't know refer specifically to our list and our evidence, and it has become a pretty standard ship, especially since.... but that's another story.

Because it was basically unknown back in the day I do not have ancient fanfics to share with you on this count. The two enduring-classic old NM fics I can name don't go there (though one does give Dani a girlfriend) and I do not remember even where to find the handful of stories that were posted back in the days when fics had individual fandom archives at best.

I can dig up stories to link now but they aren't stories that I've read and loved over the years, they're just things I'm finding right this moment. Anyway here's a couple that look promising:

The agony of a week home without him, despite knowing Cillian would be returning, was slowly making way to the pure excitement and ever present want to jump his bones, knowing that his flight had been due to land a little while ago and he would be here, at home, with you soon. You had finished work less than half an hour ago, and in the time between then and now you had been so giddy, you could hardly sit still. He was coming home, for the long run, and that felt monumental - despite you having done this whole routine many times before. You try to occupy yourself with your week of laundry in the small back room, off the kitchen, but when the five minute job is completed, you once again find yourself like a child waiting for Santa on Christmas Eve. Pulling the laundry room door shut behind you, you wonder if making coffee would settle you down any. You check the water level in the kettle before flicking the switch, and grab your preferred mug from the cupboard. You picked your phone from the pocket of your hoodie and unlocked it before you dragged down the notification bar. Nothing from Cillian about being on the way home yet, but there was a text from Cillian from earlier in the day that you'd somehow missed. Frowning at the oddity, you click open the message.

We are going to have to talk to the boys and Yvonne. [link]

You stare at the message then click the link. Your screen opens up to a page in The Sun and, as you scan the article, you grow more and more nervous.

Peaky Blinders star Cillian Murphy was spotted on sets in the recent weeks, all across locations in the UK, alongside familiar faces such as Sophie Rundle, Packy Lee and Ned Dennehy. Most recently, the Cork native was seen with his long-term girlfriend, Y/N, who was visiting their set. Murphy and Y/N began a relationship after the breakdown of his marriage to ex-wife Yvonne McGuinness. McGuinness and Murphy share two children. On set, Y/N was photographed alongside film director Tom Harper and writer Steven Knight. She was seen laughing with Johnny Dogs actor Packy Lee before she was later seen cuddling up to Murphy. I don't know if we're all wondering what you're all wondering, but is this a sign of the pitter-patter of tiny feet to come? Famously guarded about his private life, we suspect any announcements to be made would not likely come from Cillian himself. Fans are said to be looking forward to the release of the Peaky Blinders film in the coming twelve months.

Your hand shakes as you scan the photographs, shaking your head. Your stomach flips nervously. Shit! Part of you is thankful that it is this being shared, and not that anyone had shared the row on the set beforehand. But fuck! You set your phone down onto the island and cross your arms under your bust. Cillian's going to be in a mood, and you're going to have to do one thing you were staunchly against, and that's sharing the news before you're comfortable with it. Part of you wonders if perhaps his sons and Yvonne wouldn't have seen it - they're used to nonsense reports with no real information in them, so maybe they'd just pass it over if it was seen? But your anxiety is focused so hard on the possibility that speaking now will jinx your pregnancy, it's hard to keep your mind on anything more tangible - other than the fact that you know Cillian is going to be in bad humour! You do rationalise the fact that it doesn't actually give any definite information at all, but you also worry that if this was seen, then perhaps your conversation was heard or, worse yet, was shared.

You lean your back against the island counter and try to find something better in your mind. Cillian still hasn't materialised and all you want is him here, to plan what's next if he really thinks that there's a danger of his sons being hurt in this. You close your eyes as you breathe steadily, trying hard to keep calm, and you're thankful when your mind brings forward the day you met Cillian for the second time, completely coincidentally. You focused on the day, the details, and allowed the whole thing to play out in your mind.

“That's twelve euro,” the young girl behind the counter says with a smile. She has a green streak in the front of her black hair, and her bottom lip is pierced on both sides. She has a beautiful smile, though, and her eyes sparkle lightly.

You tap your card against the machine and push it back into your purse, then smile as she hands you your book and receipt. “Thanks,” you nod as you walk away, tucking the receipt into your pocket. You keep hold of the book as you step out of Eason's and back out onto O'Connell Street. You step away from the doorway and examine your book, vaguely aware you're still blocking a busy street, and begin to walk back towards the bridge. You glance up occasionally, making sure you're not walking into a pole, and as you look up again you jump and gasp, narrowly avoiding colliding with the denim jacketed back of a man before you. “Shit! Sorry!” You quickly apologise as you somehow managed to fling your book into their back as you startled. You crouch to the floor, picking up your book, and as you rise back up you come face to face with someone familiar. “Hey…” you say, frowning a little. “Cillian, right?” It's the pale blue eyes and flicking hair that gives it away, you're sure, and then he smiles as you say his name and you're absolutely certain.

“Y/N?” He says, pointing at you with a questioning expression.

You nod your head, “Yep.” You smile nervously. “I'm sorry - I threw my book at you.” You turn down the corners of your mouth. “I wasn't looking. I am sorry, really.” You insist.

“Ah, you're grand.” He shakes his head.

“Well, it's good to see you. And sorry again,” you say, gesturing past him and the person he's with. “Bye.”

“Yeah, see ya,” he says, stepping aside. “Ah, here,” he calls as you get about five steps away. You turn back, eyebrows raised. “I take it you didn't curse me?”

“Curse you?” You frown, shaking your head, and slowly step back towards him and his friend.

“Plastic Ono Band album…” he says, vaguely.

You grin brightly, “No - no actually, you have my adulation for that. It is a…remarkable album.” You say as you stuff your book awkwardly into your bag. “And it led me onto some Beatles tracks I wasn't so familiar with, too. So you, I dunno, broadened my horizons.” You chuckle.

Cillian laughs, “Then you're welcome.” He turns to the man beside him, “I met Y/N a few weeks ago, we were stranded at Busáras together.” He explains, then turns back to you. “This is a friend and colleague of mine, Steven.” He introduces you.

“Hi, Steven.” You nod politely. Steven shares a greeting just as politely, and his accent is fiercely English.

“We're just splitting up actually,” he says to you. “We were just saying our goodbyes there when you assaulted me.” He teases.

“Yes, sorry again,” you smile, but you're not entirely sure if he's being funny or not.

“Yeah, I'll say goodbye.” Steven says, and he gives Cillian a gentle hug before nodding at you again politely.

“Good luck,” Cillian calls out, and he turns as Steven walks away, watching him go. Turning back to you, he smiles brightly. “What are the odds of meeting a complete stranger more than once?” He laughs a little.

“Serendipitous, clearly.” You smile. “It was nice to see you again, and thank you again for the music, and for not wanting to have me questioned by the Guards for assaulting you.” You say, hoping you've caught onto a satirically delivered joke he was making.

He laughs, his tongue peeking over his teeth, and you remember how much you'd like it that day in the station. “Ah, no bother.” He says as he pushes his hands into his jeans pockets. “What was the book?” He asks, and you feel like he's keeping you around, looking for reasons to keep this up. Not that you mind - you're not rushing anywhere on a work-free Saturday.

“Oh, an old one. I had it on order at Eason's.” You say. “Only got it for a trip next week.” you dip your hand into your bag and pull the book back out, handing it over to him. “Read it?” You ask, “My friend at work suggested it, says it's an Irish writer and kinda beloved here by the right minds.” You laugh. He's smiling and you can't work it out, and he hands the book back with a chuckle. “What?” You ask, nervously, and look at the book again. “Is it really bad?”

“No,” he smirks, “No it's very good.” You pushes his hands into his pockets again, still smiling.

You look at him, then then book. “Odd name though, isn't it? Gives nothing away. Breakfast on Pluto…” you shake your head and push the book back into your bag.

“Are you free?” He asks bluntly.

“Free?” You raise your eyebrows, glancing around you quickly.

“Coffee?” he suggests.

You smile and nod your head, “Yeah, sure. Coffee.”

You startle as your phone buzzes across the island counter, and bring yourself back to the present with a sigh. You pick up your phone, relieved to see ‘Cill’ in the notification bar. You slide it down and open his message.

“In a taxi, be home soon. Get the kettle on. See you soon mo ghrá.”

You click your phone off and hold it tightly in your hand, sighing again. It is a relief to know he is coming home now, and it is a relief to know you'll be able to curl up beside him whenever you want for the foreseeable, but you are frightened about what he would choose to do now regarding that article. You know you can argue the point that it doesn't say anything truly, but you're fairly sure he's made up his mind and will want the boys and Yvonne to know sooner than later. You don't want words uttered before you're comfortable with it, you do appreciate why he might. But anxiety won't allow you to feel easy about it at all - it'd jinx everything to talk about the baby before the scan, and then you'd have to go around telling anyone that had been told, that something had gone wrong.

You set your phone down and grip both hands against the counter, feeling your sickly, low-burning nausea ramping up. You swallow hard and blow soothing breaths out in the hopes it'll ease the queasiness, but you suspect you're fighting a losing battle. You walk towards the sink and lift the washing up bowl out of it, and hover above expectantly, but hopeful that the impending gag doesn't rise. But you do gag, twice, and you brace your hands on the sink as the stomach lurches. Fuck! You can't get used to this. By some miracle you don't actually vomit, but the gags are painful nonetheless. When you feel like it's safe, you straighten up and replace the bowl into the sink. You rest your back against the sink and rest your head into your hands, sighing heavily, and feeling a sudden overwhelming urge to cry.

You don't want to share your news before you're ready. You don't want to see your life plastered across sites and pages. And you realise this is exactly what Cillian was scared of happening. You feel foolish, stupid, and pathetic. This is supposed to be happy, and it sucks so much. For the first time since the press associated with his divorce, you find yourself absolutely hating what Cillian does and the fame associated with it.

I haven’t really seen any of the more recent U.S. election news hitting tumblr yet so here’s some updates (now edited with sources added):

There’s evidence of Trump cheating and interfering with the election.

Possible Russian interference.

Mail-in ballots are not being counted or “recognized” in multiple (notably swing) states.

30+ bomb threats were called in and shut down polling stations on Election Day.

20+ million votes are still unaccounted for, and that’s just to have the same voter turnout as 2020.

There was record voter turnout and new/first-time voter registration this year. We definitely should be well over the turnout in 2020.

U.S. citizens are using this site to demand, not only a recount, but a complete investigation into election fraud and interference for the reasons stated above:

An investigation for election interference and fraud is required. We desperately need a recount or even a revote. The American people deserve the right to a free and fair election. There has been evidence unveiled of Trump cheating and committing election fraud which is illegal. There is some evidence of possible Russian interference. At least 30+ bomb threats were called in to polling places. Multiple, notably swing states, have ballots unaccounted for and voting machines not registering votes. Ballots and ballot boxes were tampered with and burned. Over 20 million votes that we know of are unaccounted for. With record turnout and new voter registration this year, there should be no possibility that there are less votes than even in the 2020 election.

The first is a screenshot with a link and information for contacting the White House directly regarding election fraud. The instructions include choosing to leave a comment to President Joe Biden directly and to select election security as the reason.

The screenshot then instructs people to include any or all of the following information in a paragraph as a comment to the president:

32 fake bomb threats were called into Democratic leaning poll places, rendering polling places closed for at least an hour.

A lot of people reporting their ballots were not counted for various reasons.

This all occurred in swing states.

This is too coincidental that these things happen and swing in his favor after months of hinting at foul play.

Directly state that an investigation for tampering, interference, fraud is required, not just a recount.

The challenge argues that a provision of the Pennsylvania Election Code takes precedence over the federal Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act (UOCAVA), which requires states and counties to permit U.S. citizens who move overseas to vote by absentee ballot for federal offices based on their last U.S. residential address.

The full text of the challenge that was filed appears below this email.

I am Mohammed Saqr , 22 yrs , a Palestinian youngman, from Gaza, seeking to save my 12 _ member family from the hell of the war by moving to a safe place till the gruesome war ends.

Our suffering and hardship started on 14th October, 2023 when my family was forcibly displaced from the north to the south under a life-threatening situation. As a result, our houses were completely destroyed and demolished, and our business accordingly went with the wind. Nothing has been left to be a source of livelihood. No shelters to house us nor a livelihood source to live on.

We have been living miserably in tents since the early days of the war. Life had become very hard and tough. No means of life still exists. Getting the least level of life is now hard and impossible. All our hope is to secure the daily basic necessities but this seems more often impossible that is why we are suffering the hardship of life. You can't imagine how hard it is to get food, drink water, medicine and other facilities. Life has become dire and sad in addition to the hot weather inside the hot tents that adds to our pain and unbelievable sufferings. Words can't show the miserable situations and circumstances we are experiencing nowadays due to the unfair war.

A part of our daily sufferings to get the least of what we need. Imagine how you feel when you wait for at least four hours in queue .Things are the worst one has ever

experienced. That is why I am asking for you generous contribution to help me secure the least of what we daily need and to find safety and peace for the twenty-member family who are now tasting all forms of torture and sorrow.

Help save Bilal's family!

i want to talk about my friend Bilal @bilal-salah0. for over a year now, Bilal has been living in germany, trying to adjust to his new living situation in a foreign country, learning a new language and working full time. 

when the war started, he was far away from home and his family and has been living in daily fear for their lives ever since. 

being forced to work long hours and promoting his family’s fundraiser at the same time, he has taken on more responsibility than anyone ever should. still, he managed to raise money for their evacuation fund and helped take care of his family’s daily needs with the money he was making while working. 

in a cruel twist of fate, all of this got taken away in an instant. he lost his job and his apartment and even his residence permit. which means he is at danger of deportation from germany that could happen as soon as next week!

i have been in daily contact with Bilal for a while now and connected him with some of my friends in germany. together, we are trying our utmost to make sure he can stay in the country. anyone who knows german bureaucracy knows what kind of hell it is. but we won't give up.

without his job, he was forced to dip into the money of his family’s evacuation fund to cover their daily expenses like food and shelter. this meant he had to raise his goal from €70,000 to €100,000. this was not an easy decision for him to make, he even asked for my advice on whether or not to do it, because he did not want anyone to think he was scamming people. 

even in such a desperate situation, Bilal does not want to be seen as someone who would ever take advantage of people's generosity

his family is comprised of 18 members, 10 of them are adults and 8 are children under 16 years old, some of them newborns who were born amidst the chaos of war and displacement.

Happy Public Domain Day 2025 to all who celebrate

In 1976, Congress set fire to the country's libraries; in 1998, they did it again. Today, in 2024, the flames have died down, and out of the ashes a new public domain is growing. Happy Public Domain Day 2025 to all who celebrate!

For most of US history, copyright was something you had to ask for. To copyright a work, you'd send a copy to the Library of Congress and they'd issue you a copyright. Not only did that let you display a copyright mark on your work – so people would know they weren't allowed to copy it without your permission – but if anyone wanted to figure out who to ask in order to get permission to copy or adapt a work, they could just go look up the paperwork at the LoC.

In 1976, Congress amended the Copyright Act to eliminate the "formality" of copyright registration. Now, all creative works of human authorship were copyrighted "at the moment of fixation" – the instant you drew, typed, wrote, filmed, or recorded them. From a toddler's nursery-school finger-painting to a graffiti mural on a subway car, every creative act suddenly became an article of property.

But whose property? That was on you to figure out, before you could copy, publish, perform, or preserve the work, because without registration, permissions had to start with a scavenger hunt for the person who could grant it. Congress simultaneously enacted a massive expansion of property rights, while abolishing the title registry that spelled out who owned what. As though this wasn't enough, Congress reached back in time and plopped an extra 20 years' onto the copyrights of existing works, even ones whose authors were unknown and unlocatable.

For the next 20 years, creative workers, archivists, educators and fans struggled in the face of this regime of unknowable property rights. After decades of well-documented problems, Congress acted again: they made it worse.

In 1998, Congress passed the Sonny Bono Copyright Act, AKA the Mickey Mouse Preservation Act, AKA the Copyright Term Extension Act. The 1998 Act tacked another 20 years onto copyright terms, but not just for works that were still in copyright. At the insistence of Disney, Congress actually yanked works out of the public domain – works that had been anthologized, adapted and re-issued – and put them back into copyright for two more decades. Copyright stretched to the century-plus "life plus 70 years" term. Nothing entered the public domain for the next 20 years.

So many of my comrades in the fight for the public domain were certain that this would happen again in 2018. In 2010, e-book inventor and Project Gutenberg founder Michael S Hart and I got into a friendly email argument because he was positive that in 2018, Congress would set fire to the public domain again. When I insisted that there was no way this could happen given the public bitterness over the 1998 Act, he told me I was being naive, but said he hoped that I was right.

Michael didn't live to see it, but in 2019, the public domain opened again. It was an incredible day:

No one has done a better job of chronicling the fortunes of our fragile, beautiful, bounteous public domain than Jennifer Jenkins and James Boyle of Duke University's Center for the Study of the Public Domain. Every year from 2010-2019, Boyle and Jenkins chronicled the works that weren't entering the public domain because of the 1998 Act, making sure we knew what had been stolen from our cultural commons. In so many cases, these works disappeared before their copyrights expired, for example, the majority of silent films are lost forever.

Then, in 2019, Jenkins and Boyle got to start cataloging the works that were entering the public domain, most of them from 1923 (copyright is complicated, so not everything that entered the public domain in 2019 was from that year):

Now, 2024 was a fantastic year for the public domain, but – as you'll see in the 2025 edition of the Public Domain Day post – 2025 is even better:

So what's entering the public domain this year? Well, for one thing, there's more of the stuff from last year, which makes sense: if Hemingway's first books entered the PD last year, then this year, we'll the books he wrote next (and this will continue every year until we catch up with Hemingway's tragic death).

There are some big hits from our returning champions, like Woolf's To the Lighthouse and A Farewell to Arms from Hemingway. Jenkins and Boyle call particular attention to one book: Faulkner's The Sound and the Fury, its title taken from a public domain work by Shakespeare. As they write, Faulkner spoke eloquently about the nature of posterity and culture:

[Humanity] is immortal, not because he alone among creatures has an inexhaustible voice, but because he has a soul, a spirit capable of compassion and sacrifice and endurance…The poet’s voice need not merely be the record of man, it can be one of the props, the pillars to help him endure and prevail.

The main attraction on last year's Public Domain Day was the entry of Steamboat Willie – the first Mickey Mouse cartoon – into the public domain. This year, we're getting a dozen new Mickey cartoons, including the first Mickey talkie:

Those 12 shorts represent a kind of creative explosion for the Disney Studios. Those early Mickey cartoons were, each and every one, a hybrid of new copyrighted works and the public domain. The backbone of each Mickey short was a beloved, public domain song, with Mickey's motion synched to the beat (animators came to call this "mickey mousing"). In 1929, there was a huge crop of public domain music that anyone could use this way:

Blue Danube, Pop Goes the Weasel, Yankee Doodle, Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush, Ach Du Lieber Augustin, Listen to the Mocking Bird, A-Hunting We Will Go, Dixie, The Girl I Left Behind Me, a tune known as the snake charmer song, Coming Thru the Rye, Mary Had a Little Lamb, Auld Lang Syne, Aloha ‘Oe, Turkey in the Straw, My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean, Habanera and Toreador Song from Carmen, Lizst’s Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2, and Goodnight, Ladies.

These were recent compositions, songs that were written and popularized in the lifetimes of the parents and grandparents who took their kids to the movies to see Mickey shorts like "The Barn Dance," "The Opry House" and "The Jazz Fool." The ability to plunder this music at will was key to the success of Mickey Mouse and Disney. Think of all the Mickeys and Disneys we've lost by locking up the public domain for the past half-century!

This year, we're getting some outstanding new old music for our public domain. The complexities of copyright terms mean that compositions from 1929 are entering the public domain, but we're only getting recordings from 1924. 1924's outstanding recordings include:

George Gershwin performing Rhapsody in Blue, Jelly Roll Morton playing Shreveport Stomp, and an early recording from contralto and civil rights icon Marian Anderson, who is famous for her 1939 performance to an integrated audience of over 75,000 people at the Lincoln Memorial. Anderson’s 1924 recording is of the spiritual Nobody Knows the Trouble I’ve Seen.

While the compositions include Singin' in the Rain, Ain't Misbehavin', An American in Paris, Bolero, (What Did I Do to Be So) Black and Blue, Tiptoe Through the Tulips, Happy Days Are Here Again, What Is This Thing Called, Love?, Am I Blue? and many, many more.

On the art front, we're getting Salvador Dali's earliest surrealist masterpieces, like Illumined Pleasures, The Accommodations of Desire, and The Great Masturbator. Dali's contemporaries are not so lucky: after a century, the early history of the works of Magritte are so muddy that it's impossible to say whether they are in or out of copyright.

But there's plenty of art with clearer provenance that we can welcome into the public domain this year, most notably, Popeye and Tintin. As the first Popeye and Tintin comics go PD, so too do those characters.

The idea that a fictional character can have a copyright separate from the stories they appear in is relatively new, and it's weird and very stupid. Courts have found that the Batmobile is a copyrightable character (Batman won't enter the public domain until 2035).

Copyright for characters is such a muddy, gross, weird idea. The clearest example of how stupid this gets comes from Sherlock Holmes, whose canon spans many years. The Doyle estate – a rent-seeking copyright troll – claimed that Holmes wouldn't enter the public domain until every Holmes story was in the public domain (that's this year, incidentally!).

This didn't fly, so their next gambit was to claim copyright over those aspects of Holmes's character that were developed later in the stories. For example, they claimed that Holmes didn't show compassion until the later stories, and, on that basis, sued the creators of the Enola Holmes TV show for depicting a gender-swapped Sherlock who wasn't a total dick:

As the Enola lawyers pointed out in their briefs, this was tantamount to a copyright over emotions: "Copyright law does not allow the ownership of generic concepts like warmth, kindness, empathy, or respect, even as expressed by a public domain character – which, of course, belongs to the public, not plaintiff."

When Mickey entered the public domain last year, Jenkins did an excellent deep dive into which aspects of Mickey's character and design emerged when:

Jenkins uses this year's entry of Tintin and Popeye into the public domain to further explore the subject of proprietary characters.

Even though copyright extends to characters, it only covers the "copyrightable" parts of those characters. As the Enola lawyers wrote, the generic character traits (their age, emotional vibe, etc) are not protected. Neither is anything "trivial" or "minuscule" – for example, if a cartoonist makes a minor alteration to the way a character's pupils or eyes are drawn, that's a minor detail, not a copyrightable element.

The biggest impediment to using public domain characters isn't copyright, it's trademark. Trademark is very different from copyright: foundationally, trademark is the right to protect your customers from being deceived by your competitors. Coke can use trademark to stop Pepsi from selling its sugary drinks in Coke cans – not because it owns the word "Coke" or the Coke logo, but because it has been deputized to protect Coke drinkers from being tricked into buying not-Coke, thinking that they're getting the true Black Waters of American Imperialism.

Companies claim trademarks over cartoon characters all the time, and license those trademarks on food, clothing, toys, and more (remember Popeye candy cigarettes?).

Indeed, Hearst Holdings claims a trademark over Popeye in many traditional categories, like cartoons, amusement parks, ads and clothes. They're also in the midst of applying for a Popeye NFT trademark (lol).

Does that mean you can't use Popeye in any of those ways? Nope! All you need to do is prominently mention that your use of Popeye is unofficial, not associated with Hearst, and dispel any chance of confusion. A unanimous Supreme Court decision (in Dastar) affirm your right to do so. You can also use Popeye in the title of your unauthorized Popeye comic, thanks to a case called Rogers v Grimaldi.

This all applies to Tintin, too – a big deal, given that Tintin is managed by a notorious copyright bully who delights in cruelly terrorizing fan artists. Tintin is joined in the public domain by Buck Rogers, another old-timey character whose owners are scumbag rent-seekers.

Congress buried the public domain alive in 1976, and dumped a load of gravel over its grave in 1998, but miraculously, we've managed to exhume the PD, and it has been revived and is showing signs of rude health.

2024 saw the blockbuster film adaptation of Wicked, based on the public domain Oz books. It also saw the publication of James, a celebrated retelling of Twain's Huck Finn from the perspective of Huck's enslaved sidekick.

This is completely normal. It's how art was made since time immemorial. The 40 year experiment in life without a public domain is at an end, and not a minute too soon.

So I haven’t talked about this on main before, but the situation in South Gaza has gotten so horrifying that I’m p much throwing caution to the wind to desperately plead for eyes on this. I’m raising awareness about stories from activists in Gaza right now, including one of our own.

My lovely, wonderful friend Swin (aka tumblr user @combaticon) was deployed as a volunteer medic to a Gaza hospital on the 9th.

When the bloodshed started, she heard they needed extra hands in Gaza, she spoke Arabic and had the training, and she went.

I’ve been in contact with her throughout. She’s so incredibly brave it takes my breath away. My heart bleeds for these children she’s taking care of and how resilient they are is… astonishing.

Swin and these poor people have been under siege for so long, and they’re in desperate need of critical supplies. They have to filter water through their clothes, and it’s getting dangerously cold. Foods finally been getting through, but there’s not enough blankets and jackets to go around and there’s no fuel for the generators.

Their comrades in the West Bank have been completely pushed out by settler thugs. It’s incredibly unsafe to even be doing humanitarian work for Palestinians. Remember this the next time a Zionist tells you they’re doing this to ‘feel safe’. The IOF is arming lynch mobs.

On a personal note, this has been the most gut-wrenching week of my life. Every day when I wake up without a text from her I feel so much fear. I fight back the grief but I don’t know how to help or what to do. It’s terrifying.

Swin has asked for nothing, absolutely nothing other than something it can show the people around it to make them feel like they’re not going to be abandoned. To make sure they’re not forgotten in some pit praying Rafah opens before Israel decides to slaughter them all.

Today was a bad day. She’s alive but beyond worrying about her privacy now; she’s asked me to share this and to beg that we not lose steam and forget about them. Please share this, and please keep being fucking annoying and loud and digging your heels in with fury because we cannot let these people die silently.

Moataz, his wife Maryam, and their baby girl Maria were attempting to evacuate to Egypt following the destruction of their home and the siege of Al-Shifa Medical Complex that trapped them for weeks. They hoped to get to safety in Egypt, and find work so they could raise the funds needed to return to Gaza and rebuild their home. However, the day before they were set to travel, the occupation illegally seized control of Rafah crossing. The crossing is now closed and it is not known when it will reopen.

Moataz and his family are now trying to raise funds to rebuild their home after it was destroyed by lOF bombardment. They will not be able to raise the required funds on their own if they cannot reach Egypt, so they need our support in order to rebuild their home.
