So because half of my Pacific Rim special interest involves making aus, new au time!

I call this one the Ricochet AU. It's split into two parts, the prequel/prologue that I call Alter Eon, which is based on @/eeriedragone’s original au, and the aftermath. This au is a runoff/addendum to my Crestfallen Au, which is my canon-compliant au of Uprising. (I’ll add a link to Alter Eon when it's published) I'll give the summary for the aftermath below, though be aware it contains slight spoilers for Alter Eon.

In Pacific Rim: The Black, there is a Kaiju-human hybrid who simply goes by “Kaiju b0y”. I’ve decided to take my own spin on that concept. Some time after Alter Eon, Newton detected the presence of a kaiju along the southern coast of Japan, but it felt off as it seemed to be stationary. The PPDC investigate, and to their surprise, they find what appears to be an unconscious human boy. However, they quickly learn his DNA is far from human. He’s taken back to the Shatterdome where he is tested, and is given the nickname “George”. Scientists found he had DNA traits that matched both humans and Kaiju, though unlike Kaiju DNA, it was not cloned. The boy awakens sometime later, and when it's determined he is not a threat, he is questioned. George only has vague memory of originating from the Antverse, along with general human knowledge the Precursors “programmed” into him. He also has the ability to shift into a Kaiju form, which he willingly demonstrates in a test chamber. Shortly after, he is introduced to Newton, uniting the only known Kaiju-Human hybrids. They talk, and Newton, who has recently learned how to shift between forms, explains himself and his history. He notes that while they are both part Kaiju, they do not possess the “hive-mind”. Newton hypothesizes that if they drift, they should be able to recreate it, as he connected to the hive-mind when he drifted with a Kaiju. Additionally, they may be able to search into George’s psyche, and discover the truth of his origins. After developing a modified neural bridge, the two drift successfully. It is revealed George was created as a prototype of some kind, but they are not able to find out what for. Something went wrong in the process of George’s creation, and was discarded, explaining why he is not under the Precursor’s control. Afterwards, a neural link is established between the two. From there, the hybrids along with K-science work towards finding a breach to the Antverse in hopes of defeating the Precursors once and for all; before they regain control over Newton and George.

Like Kaiju b0y, George is able to control his human and Kaiju form with ease, and is skilled in terms of physical altercation. However, he doesn't immediately know everything about the human world, which Newton teaches him. Over time, he becomes something of a mentor figure to George as they work together. George’s Kaiju form is known as Ricochet (hence the au's name), and Newton’s is Kynmatik (mostly just because I wanted to give him his own Kaiju name hskgbakhg).

Also, I made a little picrew to give an idea on what George looks like.

Additionally, he's able to make certain parts of his body glow blue from his blood, such as his eyes

Hey, omegaverse people! Any ideas for terms for in-universe sexualities like an omega who is only attracted to other omegas or an alpha only attracted to other alphas? Or should I maybe just give up on trying to come up with in-universe terms and just go with real-world ones like gay, since attraction is based on secondary genders in this thing I'm working on, so a male alpha attracted to a male omega is technically straight, I fucking guess

a brief explanation of the origins of hiccup's real name (håkan) and how he came to accept it. it is believed that in old norse customs, the use of bynames was common; they could be praising or condescending, sometimes even used without one's given name, rewriting them. the collection of many bynames and honorary titles could indicate glory, fame and endless spirit.

ㅤhe was born a moon cycle too early, already too anxious to live. a wee thing, like his mother said: small, fragile, almost the size of a cat. he fought against his own little lungs, deafening all around the crib with his cries. his father was proud, for he squeezed his finger, and it hurt. he thought him a warrior, in a hurry to leave footsteps into the world. when stoick held him, he raised him to soak in dawning moonlight. as if smiling down on their family, thor sent thunder cutting through the skies... or was it a dragon roaring in the distance? the chronicles won't say for certain. blinded by promises only he could hear or perhaps projecting much of his own greens in his son's eyes, his father wanted to name him quickly, before the sun reached its peak. so soon, ausa vatni bathed his forehead, welcoming him in the arms of the chieftain, claiming him heir and part of the tribe. the storytellers sang the name chosen by the great and the vast: håkan, and the storytellers etched his runes so the gods would not forget his calling: ᛡᛆᚴᛆᚿ.

ㅤwhile some would call it arrogance, love was what made stoick not name his child ulf, bjørn, toke, arne, njal or any derivation from animals or fables. the name was a promise: his son was exalted by his father, the leader of the pack, and his mother, the queen, chosen by the very heavens, born to lead and rule, destined for greatness in all his might, a warrior in the making, strongest of them all. first of his name, his son was the mark of a better tomorrow to come, according to his father's speeches. a worthy heir for his legacy and tribe! no father could be more proud, more excited for grey days to come. his name, noble and princely, served to warn all others of his to-be imposing and towering presence. all expected him to be like stoick.

ㅤneedless, thus it is to say that, as his child grew, he did not seem to fit in the pledged shoes. he got sick often and was scrawny, body petit like a branch, trembling against harsh winds. clumsy he was on his feet, far too enamoured with stupid fables and childish wonders. he always let his prey escape and did poorly in sports. barely had a competitive spirit. he could not hold much of his drinking, either. sailors called him a bad luck charm, and gatherers avoided his son. he did not seem to have an ounce of charisma: he stuttered in shiness, fumbling on his words. his byname was soon fixed to be hixti inn (hiccup man, hiccup). so fitting it was that even his father adopted it. hence, ᛡᛆᚴᛆᚿ was replaced by ᛡᛁᚴᛍᛐᛁ ᛁᚿᚿ in young royal stories. hiccup embraced it, for he was hiccup, and not håkan. at least as a mere hiccup he did not feel so pressured. or that is what he believed, at least. sometimes, though, fate is a funny trickster thing.

ㅤ[ ... ]ㅤwhen the dragons were tamed and brought home, he showed himself bigger than hiccup or håkan, for he was both, neither and more. he stopped flinching or hesitating when someone called him by his given exalted name, and he smiled whenever his father would ruffle his hair in pride then. his chest was bigger now, heart more daring and outwards. thanks to his works and ambition, he collected other bynames so legends to prose: smiðr (ᛍᛘᛁᚦᛦ, great smith, metal maker), draig kyn (ᛑᚱᛆᛁᚵ ᚴᚤᚿ, dragon-kinned, of fire and scales) and hersir (ᛡᛂᚱᛍᛁƦ, chieftain and loved guardian). even the elders gave him honourary titles: first rider, cloud chaser, pride of berk, berk's shield, blade cutter, heart and soul of dragon. though ghosts of feeling unworthy still burdened his nightmares and shoulders, he carried himself tall like his father taught him: he needed to try and be that great, that brave and that selfless. for his father was proud at the table of the kings, smiling down on him, and he watched as every step of his son now left bold footsteps behind. for he was first of his name and unlike all before him.

Listening to the new episode of Vows and Vengeance, I think I finally settled on a concept that I'd like to play for a Taash romance

I was rotating a few different ones in my head (originally wanted another dwarfette, but.... including my Warden, that'd be my bloody fifth lol), but, it having been revealed that she hates the undead and the only background I don't yet have a character for being the Mourn Watch... it's like a dude just sprung from my head fully formed like fuckin Pallas Athene

Like, you know how somehow characters are less named, and more they just... kinda introduce themselves? So this guy is Marcus (which I think works quite well with "Ingellvar", it sounds nice- I think someone once said that "Ingellvar" means something like "guardian of Ing", pairing that with a Latin "dedicated to Mars" would work for the background I only just now read quite nicely) (speaking of, yet another foundling, putting a pin in that), and he'll be a tall and scrawny, young, accident-prone necromancer- his feelings on that matter would definitely take too long to detail lol.

Not only is he going to probably look like a kind of weird-looking Victorian street urchin you immediately want to feed warm soup upon meeting (or, on the other end, insufferably pretty and dainty but sopping wet nevertheless), I'm thinking that he'll also need to be pulled out of mortal danger pretty much constantly (in part because I always suck at mage gameplay and find it annoying, so I'm giving myself some room to fail there lol). He's definitely a guy they pulled as Rook more because of his academic prowess and magical knowledge, rather than his combat abilities.

But, he will take one look at Taash, and immediately fall ass over teakettle.

(I mean ffs, she's tall, she's strong, she's beautiful, she weighs at least twice as much as him, her biceps are the size of his head- what's not to love, honestly. Is he unsure whether he's scared or horny? Absolutely. But if there's one thing he's down for, it's finding out.)

(kind of laughing already at the thought of her needing to very patiently explain to her prettyboy magical savant that the reason they can't do cowgirl is that she would absolutely and inevitably snap his pelvis in half.)

(I also quite like that it would in no way be a "touch her and you'll be sorry" type of an MF ship, but rather a "touch me and she'll make you sorry". Very "you've hurt me? oh, you're so fucked. Oh man, RIP, I'm almost sorry about what's gonna happen to you. I can perform your last rites right now if you like, you'll need them".)

......... That gives me one character for each background, and the opportunity to double up on one, if I happen to think of something for Bellara after all, and just say that my Lords of Fortune character only uses Laidir as one of her many aliases. (I had been meaning to do that anyway, I want her to be Orzammar-born, and that name doesn't sound very dwarfy.)

tbh i might go ahead and put dungeons in as a part of the bellum x linebeck fic's plot since like. 1) struggling to actually figure out a main plot and having dungeons as sort of bit points to hit and be little bits of fitting exploration and bonding and 2) i do kinda want to do dungeons. i like thinking of them and again i do think its fitting.
