Zutara, romance novels, and the female gaze

Okay so I’ve been thinking about the female gaze a LOT so I checked out a subreddit about romance novels, despite never having read one. I came across this meme (which was initially a Tumblr post and then got posted to Instagram and then to Reddit and I’m now bringing back to Tumblr — Internet telephone, pls never change):

And…what is The Southern Raiders, if not a platonic grovel? Katara’s pain is central to the episode. It’s central to Zuko. Zuko asks Katara what he can do to make up for his betrayal; she demands the impossible. He reads between the lines, cockblocks her brother to get the necessary information, and then waits outside her door overnight (which he also did for Iroh, the one person we know for sure he loves). He basically makes himself a receptacle for her rage, and he holds space for her by coming with her on her revenge quest and carrying their bags and not saying a damn thing about what she should and should not do beyond like…asking her to rest. And obviously the grovel works! She forgives him and then they’re thick as thieves, bantering and fighting and saving each other’s lives, etc.

On a different note, I’ve been told that enemies to lovers is one of the biggest tropes in romance novels, similar to YA lit and fanfic. Here’s something else I found in the romance novel discourse:

And…yeah. In TSR, Katara really does show Zuko her worst self, because she doesn’t feel the need to perform for him. She doesn’t feel the need to perform moral perfection OR cold blooded vengeance. She bloodbends in front of him and he just goes with it. She doesn’t kill Yon Rha and he just goes with it. He doesn’t treat her any differently afterwards. Maybe they talk about it off screen, but I kind of like the idea that they don’t, because Katara doesn’t need to explain anything. And it’s so interesting, because some people in the ATLA fandom have a totally different read on TSR. They think Zuko was encouraging Katara to get revenge (by what, keeping his mouth shut?), and that Aang is the one who acts as her moral compass. I believe that either Bryan or Mike said in the DVD commentary that Aang is the angel on her shoulder the entire time. And this interpretation does make sense if you see it from the male gaze, where Katara as an object of affection is acting in an angry, irrational, threatening way. But if you see it from the female gaze, you recognize that actually it’s probably the most emotionally taxing experience Katara has to go through, and she doesn’t owe it to be nice or perfect to anybody. Katara’s formative trauma literally comes to a head, and she has to make a decision — no, a discovery — about who she is in relation to the tragedy that defines her life and even her identity (as a waterbender, as a parentified child who becomes the mom friend, as a genocide victim), and she’s accompanied by someone who trusts her judgement and validates her feelings.

I’m not saying TSR is explicitly romantically coded, but when it conforms so well to romance novel tropes…is it any wonder that so many people thought “yes this is her man?” And then he takes lightning in the heart for her and reaches for her when he’s literally dying, I will never be normal about that either

One Piece / Straw hats with a Reader who struggles with ASI (Autistic Self Injury)

Warnings: Self harm, primarily

ASI is sometimes referred to as Non-Suicidal Self Injury, and it's typically not done deliberately the way "standard" SH is. It can be because of both under or over-stimulation, or sometimes it can just be a form of stimming that happens to be physically harmful. This isn't exclusive to autism, it's also common w/ compulsion based disorders such as OCD.

Disclaimer: I'm not a professional of any sort I'm just a guy who has it. My experience is not universal and most of this will be based on how I experience and deal with these problems.

POST THAT CATERS TO ME BEFORE ANYBODY ELSE HERE WE GO!!!

In all honesty One Piece is so chock-full of quirky and frankly weird people that I don't think an autistic person would phase most characters all that much. Not saying ableism wouldn't exist at all, but like. Franky is here. I don't think most lower-support needs autistic people would even be noticed by anyone other than some of the doctor characters and I don't think high-support needs people would be treated badly (By the more... decent characters, anyway). I mean hell I will always go to bat for autistic Luffy hcs, as well as Robin and Usopp to a degree but ANYWAY!

Before everyone is used to it, the site of you doing it (while upset especially) has everyone scrambling to grab you and stop it from continuing. There is… a good chance this upsets you even more, having your new crewmates suddenly swarming you... it takes a bit of back and forth, explaining that this is just normal for you.

Luffy is the one I thought of first... I've always been a biter. Whether it's nails or biting open the skin on my hands it's one of the forms I personally struggle with a lot. Now I may think Luffy is autistic but this does NOT mean I think he'd immediately understand/get it. Obligatory "autism is a spectrum" spiel, a lot of us butt heads if we have conflicting symptoms/struggles. Luffy is sympathetic, and worried about you, but he's also very blunt and there's a good chance he'd argue with you over it. What are you upset about? Clearly something's wrong, if you're doing this. What do you mean you don't notice? You're bleeding. Doesn't it hurt? This is bad for you. He's worried, so just cut it out already!

You tell him it's just an impulse you don't think about, like wiping your nose or tapping your foot. It doesn't really hurt until someone points it out, or if you accidentally do something really bad. His brows screw up, and he stares at you very intently. He says if you can't stop, then he WILL help you the next time it happens. You're a little put off, and have the suspicion that he doesn't really get it, but... well, he clearly means well. It's nice that he worries about you, and that even while ignorant in some aspects of his concern, he doesn't belittle or blame you for these behaviors... ultimately, you feel pretty okay about how things went.

Until the next time he sees you doing it, he launches across the ship to shove his nasty, grubby-ass hands into your mouth. "It doesn't hurt me!" he exclaims, while you try to cuss him out and avoid gagging on his stupid, rubbery fingers. "You need to bite, so bite me! This way hurts nobody, shishishi!" You shriek, the two of you toppling over onto the deck. Sanji or Nami smack him over the head to get him off of you. It wasn't what you'd call helpful, but... if he's out on deck or in the room with you, there's a little self-check you run through to make sure nothing your doing will warrant... that. So maybe it does sort of work?

Luffy has a similar approach to other forms of ASI too. Skin picking and hair pulling? Hitting yourself? Yeah he's going koala mode(animal that clings. Not the character) and wrapping himself around you, restraining your limbs. Which unfortunately has a high chance of making the urge worse, if it's compulsion based...

Now, Chopper has heard of this, and read about it, but he hasn't actually seen it in person yet. The first time he sees you doing it, it's shortly after you've joined. He goes to meet with you- every new member gets a check-up just to make sure everything's in working order! He finds you in the aquarium bar, absentmindedly gazing at the fish... but when he calls to you, you turn, and reveal the bloody mess of your hand- nails chewed far past the quick. He freaks out, which probably freaks you out, which attracts the attention of the others, and...

Yeah. That could've gone better. It takes a bit for you two to calm down. There's a chance he might think this is a more standard form of self-harm, and feel guilty because you're so unhappy you'd do this to yourself... when he learns the actual reason, he... still feels pretty guilty for not noticing or considering the possibility sooner. But he's the one who briefs everyone else on the details, possibly even you if you don't know you're autistic or why you do these things. I don't think these types of diagnoses or the terminology surrounding them are well known in the OP universe, so there's a good chance you don't have clue what your own problem is. Either way, everybody knows now.

Chopper lays down the basics. There's the passive SH you don't even notice, reflexive the way scratching an itch or brushing away hair is. Then there's the kind that you do because you're upset or overwhelmed in some way. It's not so simple as just stopping. You need other outlets when you feel the urges start up. He works with you to try and practice healthier grounding and coping strategies, and the others fall in line.

Nami isn't great about it if she sees it before Chopper tells everybody what's up... means well, but scolding you or grabbing you directly does not help the urges go away. She means well, but she's used to the other knuckleheads and their more... deliberate brand of dipshittery. Much more patient once she's been told the details, whether from you or Chopper.

If Nami catches you picking at your skin, it's pretty common for her to hand you a tangerine to peel. It's similar enough to skin, she reasons, it might be a good alternative. And then you can eat it afterward instead of chewing on yourself. It's a two-in-one solution! Both of you fail to consider how easily citrus juice gets inside a hand-wound though... after the first incident, it's a solution for picking at any other body parts. You can hang out in the map room with her for a little bit of peace and quiet, as long as you don't distract her. She might explain some of her work to you if you're interested.

She'll smack around any of the others if they upset/overwhelm you, whether it's actually enough to start up the sh. Her yelling might not help, but it is nice to feel supported... she'll get you jewelry to fidget with instead, and take you clothes shopping for things that don't set off sensory issues(AND look flattering, of course). Her and Robin will paint your nails. The dried polish is another better peeling/picking alternative to skin and hair. Nami adds the prices of the jewelry and nail polish to the debt of whoever accidentally sets you off.

Robin is a little better about it. If you hit yourself, or bang your head against another surface, she'll use her power to summon hands that cushion your blows. If she sees the scratching, hair pulling, etc. she asks you about it- the question usually enough to ground you and realize it's happening, if you aren't already.

She's good at redirecting you. Has you come relax somewhere quieter with her if you're overwhelmed. Works with Nami in regards to the clothes and nail polish, but also has good chapstick recommendations, since chapped lips are a big problem for lots of people with dermatillomania.

A relaxing person to be around in general (unless you're offput by her morbid comments) and is good to talk to. You admit you feel a bit ridiculous having these issues on a crew chock-full of such accomplished individuals. Childish, even. She chuckles, asking how you can say that living on the same boat as Luffy, of all people? You're hardly the only person here with self-destructive habits and it's far from your only defining trait. And though for differing reasons, both her and Brook commiserate with you regarding the loneliness and feelings of isolation a lot of autistic people face. The struggle of not understanding or being understood in turn...

Insists on you joining her and Nami while they relax, on occasion. Makes Sanji dote on you too, if you aren't a woman and he isn't already.

Speaking of Sanji, he's also good at redirecting you. The kitchen is his domain, but if you're in a rut and it'll help keep your hands busy without overwhelming you, he'll give you something to do. Help chop, help peel, here the eggs are done boiling so be a dear and help with the ice bath, won't you? Won't let you chop onions or chilis even if you insist you'll be fine.

And if you're a chewer/biter, he always has some sort of snack to give you. Finds you chewing your knuckles and shoves some Hors d'Oeuvres at you. Takes care to figure out which textures you like vs. can't handle as well. If you're hitting yourself, he sticks some thick oven mitts on your hands. It's not... perfect, by any means, but it's better.

Zoro hears the way you talk about some of it. The feeling of some sort of tense, uncomfortable energy that fills you, and the desperate need to get it out. Tearing at yourself, hitting yourself, banging your head against something to try and alleviate the feeling. He... thinks he sort of gets it, actually. Not in the same way but he gets antsy and weird if he doesn't get to do something active for too long. Is it something like that..? Passively mentions that weight training might help. It's worth a shot, and you're free to come join him if you'd like to try. And you think it over. Maybe the straining of your muscles would provide a similar and healthier form of relief, while also achieving something productive at the same time... so you make your way up to the crow's nest one day, and he's happy to see you there, truly!

But... Zoro has come a long way since he first joined. He knows he's stronger than you, but misjudged just how big the gap was. He walks you through the proper postures and stances for lifting, only for you both to face a bit of a rude awakening...

Usopp and Franky work together. Or, well, more like they both get the idea to design fidgety little devices for you, and Usopp nervously tells Franky that they probably shouldn't double as armable explosives or mini missile launchers. There should probably be a clearer line drawn between something you absentmindedly fiddle with and a weapon of mass destruction. He nods earnestly. That's a good point, bro... Guess they'll just make em both separately! SUUUPERRRR!!!!!!

If you have hair pulling issues, Usopp suggests some sort of bandana to cover and pull your hair back like his, just as an added barrier between your hands and your scalp. On top of that, he insists on wrapping bandaids on your fingertips to make picking of all sorts much harder, and makes little finger-caps with Franky when the bandaids also interfere with more regular tasks. For hitting, with Chopper's advice, they make padded gloves, vests/coats to wear that help cushion the blows. They make more covert options too, like chest guards that can be worn under normal clothes. They run their drafts by you, making sure they're not uncomfortable to wear.

Franky's "SUUUPEERRRR!!" is just as likely to become a stim as it is to be overwhelming, honestly. He fashions some noise-canceling headphones for you. When Nami learns about these, she wants her own pair, too.

Brook is always ready to help sooth you with music, but sometimes the elegant notes of a violin can become a pitchy whine to you if you're already overstimulated. It just depends on the situation. It can get to him if he accidentally makes things worse for you, but he tries not to take it personally.

But it often does work. If he's not adding to a racket and things have quieted down, sometimes starting up a song will have your hands fall to your sides without you realizing you were hurting yourself in the first place. He's very giddy about it when he pulls this off but tries not to be obvious. Subtlety isn't exactly his thing, though.

He makes a joke from a place of concern- that if you keep tearing at yourself like this, you'll end up a skeleton just like him. If it bothers you, he'll never make a joke like it again. He isn't trying to be cruel, he just likes to deal with things by being silly. If you do like it, and he gets a laugh out of you, it becomes a running gag. "You know, they say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. But as much as I would enjoy having another skeleton on board, this really isn't good for you..."

CUDDLING:

The fluff of his body makes for a very comfortable cuddling experience, just as long as you don't pull yourself too close.. enough to feel his body underneath it all. Boney, he's very thin. However asides that, cuddling is quite nice! I doubt you're going to be holding him in a death grip, aha! Pretty warm, too, so there's an added bonus in that. Similar to some points in the last post, a lot of cuddling might turn into something more... steamy... until he either learns boundaries, learns to not be fake around you, or better reads the difference between something innocent and something.. not... perhaps a mix of all three. Likes being little spoon, but won't protest if asked to be big spoon every now and then.

INJURY:

A part of his mask slips when one of you are injured. When it's you, you can see some of the worry in his eyes. He's going to try to play it cool, but there's still an urgency in his movements as he tries to stop the bleeding coming from a gushing wound.. Extra hands make things easier when you need to apply pressure. Tries to play it cool the entire time, during and after. Good luck trying to talk to him about it. Likewise, if he's the one injured it's going to be rather hard trying to bring it up with him and talking. In private he is miserable, but the second someone else is around he's putting on his act and pretending it doesn't bother him. Please ignore his wincing, at least until you two are alone...

He sleeps all sprawled out over the bed, he has probably stolen the blanket at least once or two... perhaps he's even forced you off the bed in his sleep.. his long limbs would make for good... means to push you.. yes that's worded right/j

Tosses and turns a lot, especially if he didn't use any sleeping aids that night (ex. sleeping meds). Perhaps you could invest in a weighted blanket to help him be more still in his sleep. Does not snore, though.

oh yeah another question abt intellectual disability: what do people with moderate id speak like? i assume they wouldnt be perfectly articulate but i know making them talk like cavemen would be bad too. i do want it to be clear that they have language difficulties, but im not sure how to do that realistically. so what kinds of grammar errors are actually common? would it make sense to have them mix up words with similar pronunciation, or have difficulty discerning the differences in implications between words with similar meanings (like "pretty" vs "attractive")? do people with id ever 'imagine context' the way people(well, me) do when half-asleep where the brain mishears a statement as something completely unrelated? would spatial and situational awareness be impaired? also this is kind of a different question but if you can give advice on what to do with game mechanics for an id character in an rpg, that would be nice! i already have the stats figured out for every character and theres no stat that i think would be strongly affected by id but in terms of depicted fighting style and other mechanics maybe thered be some stuff informed by it (i cant do anything too complex though, im using rpg maker vx ace). idk! im spitballing here. main thing i need to know is how to write dialogue for a character with id ^_^

Hey, we have a post somewhat about this that you might find useful, I'll try to go over the other questions below.

Keep in mind my ID is mild (and on the milder side of that) so my answer will be all second-hand knowledge from talking to people with moderate ID in my SPED years.

A lot of it will depend on what condition causes they have. People with Williams syndrome have very “normal” verbal skills majority of the time, and you can't really tell in my experience. On the other hand if they're autistic you can potentially guess from the tone of the voice e.g. they speak in a very loud and monotone way. People with Down syndrome are very likely to have a speech disorder, someone with cerebral palsy might slur their words, etc.

A lot of people with ID might be less talkative than your average person (there's definitely exceptions). So your character could use shorter sentences, simple sentences (in the grammar sense), prefer to use other forms of communication for things that don't require speech (e.g., nodding instead of saying “Yes, I agree”, or doing a thumbs up, etc.), or have to be prompted to actually answer/take part in the conversation.

I personally don't recall ever hearing the “mixing words with similar pronunciation” in someone's actual speech, maybe unless they learned the language from reading rather than hearing it. If that's the case, then ID could affect their speech more than if they didn't have it, otherwise I'd assume that the character might have brain damage or is maybe hard of hearing and simply mixes them up because they can't recognize/hear the difference between them.

Mixing words based on specific meaning makes much more sense in my opinion (probably because I do that myself). Synonyms or words that might make sense in one context but not the other are the worst. Your example here is great. When someone has ID they might take away the wrong meaning out of a word and use it incorrectly because of that. E.g., their parents used to take them camping to a forest with lots of bugs, they don't like bugs, they can later call something “foresty” to mean “with lots of bugs” even if it doesn't have much to do with an actual forest. This might make more sense for a character with more severe ID (or if they're just young) but using “attractive” when you'd normally say “pretty” makes sense for someone with moderate ID in my opinion.

Something that can also affect speech of someone with ID is word repetition. Not really in the echolalia sense (though it can be that too) but just using stock phrases that get repetitive over time. I try to edit it out from my posts, but you can still kinda see it. For some people it will be ending most sentences with the same word, for someone else it will be starting two paragraphs with the same three words without realizing even though they're right next to each other or overusing “maybe” and “if” to start sentences.

As for the “imagining context” while mishearing something, I'm not sure if I know what you mean by it, so I'm going to go out on a limb and say that I don't do it.

Situational awareness is definitely impacted for all people with ID but to different degrees. I don't know if it's part of the diagnostic criteria, but it might as well be. When the person's ID is mild it might look like someone who's just kinda unaware of what goes around them, maybe don't recognize that they're doing something that could end up badly. The more severe the intellectual disability the more obvious it is, the person might elope (wander off) and not be able to find their way back, not be able to use cooking utensils safely because they don't recognize the risks in real time (not really in the “not realizing that the knife is sharp” way if they have moderate ID, more like “not realizing that you need to be careful when putting things on hot oil, or you can get burned”), assuming that people are automatically safe to be around, things like that.

Spatial awareness doesn't affect everyone, but one of the biggest comorbidities of ID is dyspraxia, which does affect it a lot. There are people with mild ID with severe dyspraxia, and severely ID people with no dyspraxia. It varies.

Unfortunately I have never played any RPGS, and I'm not really familiar with the mechanics. Here's an old ask about intellectually disabled characters engaged in combat, hopefully it's useful?

If you want some real-life resources for hearing how intellectually disabled people talk, I really recommend this playlist. It's a bunch of interviews with people with Down syndrome and you can see that they're all very different from each other despite having the same disability.

Just saw your newest post (ouch-) and I was reading the comments and one talked about Titan Bi-Han, which got me thinking :

How do you think Kuai and Tomas would be around him? Whether it’s just sitting across from him or being in a convo, how’d you think they’d be like with someone so similar yet so different?

It would definitely be difficult. They'd be seeing Titan Bi-Han not long after Bi-Han's betrayal.

At first the two would be ready for a fight and Liu Kang would have to tell them that this Bi-Han was different. Then they'd finally notice his clothes, how he carried himself and that his eyes were softer.

They both would try to react in a professional manner while keeping talk to a minimum but I do think their reactions would vary.

Kuai Liang would be keeping things to a minimum because it would hurt too much. Bi-Han betrayed them but that's still his brother and he cares about him. And yes, this Bi-Han is different but he sounds and looks the same. Talking with this Bi-Han would be difficult but he'd force himself too.

We don't know their relationship in the other timeline but assuming they're still brothers, Bi-Han would try to talk to them and Kuai Liang would keep things minimal as possible. In his mind, this Bi-Han will have to leave and he'll be back to dealing with his own Bi-Han so there's no point in talking and getting attached and obsessed with someone you cannot have.

Tomas would try and keep things minimal but for different reasons. I think he'd assume this Bi-Han would be equally as annoyed by him so he stays out the way. When Bi-Han actually starts talking to him, he'd probably be surprised. He'd especially be surprised if Bi-Han said he was Lin Kuei still, even if he wasn't by blood.

I can see Kuai Liang trying to avoid looking at this Bi-Han, but I think Tomas would do the opposite once he knows this Bi-Han isn't like his. I think he'd find himself staring at him and not breaking eye contact, which can make him seem a bit weird but in reality he's trying to memorize what Bi-Han with softer eyes looks like. His Bi-Han looks at him with annoyance, this one looks at him like he'd look at any other human. Tomas would wanna remember this, so when this Bi-Han leaves, he can still picture it and imagine what could've been.

And Bi-Han isn’t dumb so he knows something is up but he just assumes he died in this timeline. He’d only find out the truth if he asked about Kuai Liang’s scar I think. And honestly I can see Kuai Liang getting really defensive and kinda angry about it. He shouldn’t because this Bi-Han hasn’t done anything wrong but he’s in mourning. Whenever we saw Bi-Han, we saw Kuai Liang so we can assume they were close. Someone close to you betraying you will leave you with so many conflicted emotions. I wouldn’t be surprised if Kuai Liang is extremely angry and holding it in. Tomas is probably conflicted because Bi-Han isn’t nice to him but he still never wanted to lose another family.

When this Bi-Han leaves, they’d both think they made the right decision. Kuai Liang thinks he did the right thing by not speaking to him much and keeping to himself. He has bigger things to worry about and is becoming the Grandmaster of a new clan. Becoming attached to that Bi-Han (which he knows would happen) would make him plaster him on his current Bi-Han and get others hurt. Tomas on the other hand would be relieved he got to experience a Bi-Han that wasn’t critical of everything he did, even if it wasn’t for long. I think this Bi-Han would weirdly give him closure. Kinda like “if he wanted to, he would”. If Bi-Han wanted to treat him nicely and like a human, he would. Another version of him could. This would show that Tomas isn’t the problem. It’s Bi-Han. And that would help him sleep better.

It's set at Wammy's House, in which Matt gives Near advice on how to make Mello fall in love with him. The dynamic is insanely cute and I'm obsessed with the way Matt and Near's friendship is characterised here. Them scheming together is something I need more of in fics!!

One of the longest completed works I've ever read for Meronia and I have been DYING to find something like this ever since. It's a talent agent x singer AU, and it's literally everything I could have asked for in a longfic. A unique idea, compelling progression and a fun antagonistic dynamic that blossoms into a really sweet romance. It's a slowburn but it doesn't drag on at all, and the ending is SO well worth the wait.

x + 1 fics are a favourite trope of mine, as is the general concept of Mello and Near behaving inappropriately in the workplace, and this one combines both of those perfectly. The premise is 3 times Mello and Near got walked in on by one of the SPK members, and 1 time they were caught by the whole group. The writing is SO delightful and there are several lines in this that are permanently lodged in my brain. I find humour in writing immensely difficult to pull off so I'm always in awe of authors who can integrate it naturally, and squidish's writing is a great example of that! (Worth noting that this one is slightly more mature than the other T-rated fics here, so I've put it closer to the M & E section; however the smut scenes are not explicit)

You could read literally anything by neallo and it's guaranteed to be good, but to keep this list short, I've included one angsty fic and one lighthearted fic so you can pick the vibe. This one is more lighthearted, and it depicts a very tender moment in which Mello shows up at Near's door drunk and dances with him in the kitchen. This is a prequel to a bigger AU focusing on a casual relationship between them, but it also holds up as a standalone fic! It's unbearably sweet and there are many lines in there that made me audibly laugh.

The smut scene in this fic is so intimate and perfect, I'm melting just thinking about it. It's an established relationship fic in which Near has PTSD and has certain struggles with intimacy, and Mello guides him through it. It's quite slow-paced and takes its time to linger on the small details, which I absolutely adore, and the writing itself is vivid and beautiful. It also features demisexual Near!!

This one is a PWP set mid-canon, immediately after the raid on the SPK. I'm a huge sucker for bold & bratty Near and that's EXACTLY what this fic serves. The way this introduces elements of rivalry and competition into their relationship is excellent and makes this fic feel faithful to their canon dynamic. It's a compelling push-pull with an open but hopeful ending that very succinctly captures the complexities of their relationship.

One of the first fanfics I read for Meronia and I'm not exaggerating when I say it changed my life. This fic has had SUCH a massive influence on the way I view and write the ship. It's a little glimpse into Mello and Near's relationship immediately after getting together. It's really cute and sweet in a way that feels authentic to the characters, and I'm incredibly impressed by the way it manages to give just enough backstory for their relationship to make sense without getting caught up in the details. Genuinely a masterpiece!

REGARDING MY CODES:

i have recently found out that some parts of my coding have been used on other commissions blog, this came to my attention because a customer came to hire my services and when i accessed their blog to check, normally, if i would like to accept the order or not, i noticed some similarities to my own creations, from fonts, animations, titles, etc, as you all may know i do commissions since 2018 and i have loved every part of it, since then i have improved a whole bunch but i have never stolen anything from anyone, so going through this experience is definitely a no no for me and makes me really sad, regardless i have approached the person behind the commissions blog and they did respond, positively so far and openly agreeing that they have been checking my codes for learning, in which case that would have been okay, sorts of, but that was not it, parts of my coding were included in themes they offered customers as commissions supposedly made on their own, of course there is no need for me to explain why this is not an okay behavior, even if you try to put it as inspiration, admiration, copying and pasting parts of coding is not okay.

i have heard yes that this person has been involved in these things previously, but it was not until now that i found out that yes it is true they have coding of mine. after contacting them they promised they would take the parts of my coding down, i have proof, names, blogs, everything but i will not be dropping that information so long the person behind the commission blog fulfils their word and takes the pieces of my work down off their own codings, hopefully they will, because i would hate to go through a callout etc etc, it's definitely not what i am looking for, actually i have spent my years here in silence mostly, doing my thing, not messing with anyone, just doing my work, because YES in my case, COMMISSIONS ARE MY FULLTIME JOB. as mentioned i will be keeping an eye open because i do have proof of them admitting they have parts of my code on their own, i write parts of my codes in my own language so its easy to know when someone copies it. please don't steal, copy, etc etc it's not cool, i sit in front of the laptop 9 to 12 hours a day to work on commissions, not only code but graphics too to deliver results in a matter of days, because again this is my job so it's really not nice knowing your work can be just copied you know, if you want to endure in this site as a creator just do your own and people will know you are legit, in fact i know some amazing creators out there that have been around for years too, so, do your thing, don't steal, it's not nice, it's not cool. thank you for taking the time to read this, i will be reblogging this post over @hyruleshop as well, please be mindful, what we make takes time, be respectful, and don't think that we are just blind to what is going on, we know, and even if we don't someone will tell us, it's that simple. have a good day or night friends, thank you for the support over the years, i really hope i get to be around for a bunch more years because this job makes me happy and knowing you all too!! --------- MARUJA / HYRULESHOP / HYRULESHOPCOMMS

in my original post i didn't wanna mention what this user points out because i was gonna end up writing even a longer wall of text... but yeah! this individualistic approach to not only rp and tumblr, but how we engage in other online spaces is a symptom of late-stage capitalism. even in non-rp spaces you will see people talking about the lack of engagement, how people used to talk to people on the dash or reblog stuff more. the anxiety excuse is also a good point that other people brought up in the tags. we all have anxiety, the world we live in is hell so it's expected and it's normal and it's fine! but i've noticed people use it as an excuse or a shield and that is not okay.

another super important point. threads fizzle out! sometimes our writing doesn't match the other parties! it happens!!! this is super common and i don't think any of us should feel overwhelmed by expectations. on most of people's rules i've seen that people will not say anything but kindly soft-block someone if they don't see themselves writing with someone and i think that's great. i personally don't think that we need to let the other person know we are dropping a thread UNLESS it's something that involved a lil more time and effort. like say, you plotted something out and agreed to write it out versus randomly replying to something on the tags where both people are going in blind. like the user above says, if it's something that has been plotted out, hitting up your partner is ideal, IMO! and yeah NEVER EVER EVER feel sorry about taking time to write stuff!! if someone or something makes you feel bad because you are not pumping out fast replies, RUN! that is a red flag. taking a few weeks to reply to stuff, especially multi-para threads, is normal because we are all busy people or we get sick or tired or just don't feel like writing.

This is an introduction post explaining this project and hopefully garnering some attention!

🥚 What's this about?

This is a fanzine by Shane fans, for Shane fans. It's a fan project to appreciate this character, his story, and his growth, and how much it means to a lot of us who have been through similar things.

🥚 How will this work?

Like most other zines! The project will begin on a certain date, and artists and writers will have several months to complete a piece of their choosing for the fanzine. We will use discord to communicate, schedule, and smooth out any issues.

🥚 When is the projected release?

I think aiming for spring 2024 would be nice! It'd be nice to release the zine around when Shane's birthday would be.

This is a charity zine to raise money for the mental health charity Samaritans! Samaritans is a charity that operates free and confidential phone lines for people to reach out and talk to someone whenever they're having a difficult time. They provide a listening service for those who may be suffering from suicidal thoughts or otherwise unpleasant feelings. Donations will be raised via ko-fi during a certain fundraising period and after that's over, the zine will go free to download.

🥚What format is this zine in?

The zine will be formatted to A4 paper size, HOWEVER this zine will only run digitally and will not have a print release as things stand. (Mod honestly can't afford a print release as cool as that would be...)

🥚Who can join?

Almost anyone can join! There is no requirement on skill, online following, previous zine experience etc. If this is your first zine, that's awesome! We welcome you with open arms. This is a zine for anyone who has ever struggled with their mental health, and has felt comforted by a certain stardew valley character. I do require that contributors be at least 13+. Not only would it be against discord terms of service to have under 13s on the platform, but mod here, as a fully grown adult, would also be uncomfortable with it - sorry!

🥚Are there any other rules right now?

There are a few! Let's list them, and please read carefully.

We have a zero-tolerance policy for racism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, fatphobia, and anything else that falls into similar categories. ZERO. This is non-negotiable. This is a safe space and anyone displaying any of the above will be kicked off the project.

That said, proship, comship, darkship etc are not welcome on this zine. This is a safe space for everyone, including minors, survivors, and everyone else.

This is a SFW zine. There will be no NSFW art or writing included.

Every artist and writer is free to depict Shane as they like. If they choose to depict him as trans, POC, mlm, or anything else for the sake of representation, that is their choice and you must respect it. See the first bullet point about zero tolerance.

Ableism also extends to bigotry toward those suffering with mental illness, and addicts. We are trying to promote empathy and acceptance. Ableist comments will be warned (e.g. complaining about Shane's room being messy).

Your piece must include Shane as the focal point! That should be clear already, but just in case! So long as he's the focal point, you can draw or write anything! Ships are allowed.

Reading SVSSS: Chapter 19

Weird time for me to post this as I normally post at night- I know, but I am off work today. The reason for no tea, no work, and only water this morning is because I am getting tattooed this afternoon!

ah! Meng Mo did interfere with Qiu Haitang in the mausoleum. I was wondering what all was happening with her hysterics in there; but dang that was dark showing her SJ's memories. Poor girl had her entire worldview switched p208

I am not emotionally ready to know what SJ went through. Ugh, here we go anyways.

Okay but I kind of really feel bad for Qiu Haitang- the girl really didnt know what was happening. her own brother from the very first day hid the mistreatment. SJ was really treated so fucking awfully. :( p213

I am glad that the generational naming convention was explained! Similar to MDZS jin's, the Cang Qiong Mountain sect names generationally. I was really wondering why everyone had "Qing". yay for explanation. p229

What the heck. Liu Qingge is rude as fuck: Shen Jiu said mildly, "Good talent doesn't guarantee success." Liu Qingge didn't even grace him with a sideways glance. "But certainly more success than a nobody who only began proper cultivation at age sixteen." p230

I'm having complicated feelings about OG SJ. Like -> his story is fucked and he was very badly damaged as a child, HOWEVER him treating Luo Binghe the way he did and just creating a cycle of violence is not okay. :( p234

anselm vogelweide: absolutely younger. anselm is about 50 imo (though oscar was 43 at the time of the role). he has this whole corruption kink thing going on in my mind. it's even better if he gets to be a person's first sexually so he can be absolutely sure they get the best first time experience (and so he knows they'll never have anyone better 🤭🤭)

bud cooper: he likes being seen as the older and more knowledgable one in the relationship but only by a little. he's not a fan of much younger partners because he's found them to be a little needy but he enjoys the kind of energy a slightly younger person brings to the table

laurent leclaire: like anselm, laurent likes the idea of deflowering his partner and essentially 'ruining' every other man for them because he's just so damn confident that he's the best (pre-depression ofc). though post-depression; he probably prefers someone the same age to him just because they'll hopefully have the maturity to help him cope with everything that's happened but that's not necessarily dictated by age

leto atreides i: this man is a natural paternal figure and he enjoys seeing people blossom and thrive under his charge. a partner for him isn't just someone who shares his bed; it's someone he can guide and hold and comfort. again, he has a bit more of a saviour complex in my mind so he'd prefer someone younger (who's possibly been mistreated) so he can nurse them back to health and show them what it's like to be in a healthy and loving relationship (but now we're getting into oc territory so i'll shut up)

orestes: he prefers someone younger who still has that same whimsy that he used to have as a young man. he wants someone to help him tap into that again; someone spontaneous and energetic who he go skinny-dipping with and serenade late at night. he likes younger partners because they give him a chance to be a young man again without the weight of alexandria on his shoulders

santiago garcia: santi prefers being with younger partners who look up to him and respect him. he also just loves being called papí

teddy sullivan (oc): i haven't gone into much detail around teddy as he's technically an oc for @bludpudding's little project; sandman genesis. i might go on to do a profile and loredump about him if people are interested but i'll leave it here for now. anyway, teddy prefers younger partners who he can nurture, support and guide

william tell: after his time travelling with cirk, bill realised how nice it was to be a paternal/mentor figure to a younger companion and he also likes that in a partner. he likes someone who he can support and treat but also someone who respects him and can take a firm punishment when they step out of line

abel morales: he likes his partner and himself to be on the same level so to speak so they have similar interests and can have mature conversations

bassam: despite being a government agent, bassam still likes to have fun and this might be more of a personality thing but he finds that slightly younger partners are more in tune with how he has fun and unwinds after work; cracking open some beers and chatting shit

cecil dennis: cecil needs someone who can keep up with his immaturity and wild antics. if you really want to connect with cecil, you should be able to have fun but it's even better if you can also pull him back when he's getting in over his head. he needs a little bit of guidance from time to time but he doesn't want a party-pooper!

david castillo outcome 3: david is in his late 30s/early 40s in my mind (though oscar was 33 at the time of the role). he likes having someone young enough to keep up with him but old enough to fend for themself when he goes on missions and has to take long periods away

evgeni kolpakov: ev usually goes for someone the same age as him if not a little younger though he's not exactly picky. he has a bit of a saviour complex (due to his own trauma) and likes when someone has enough whimsy to enjoy the kind of silly dates and gestures of affection that he sometimes performs

jonathan levy: jon likes the whole idea of student/professor roleplay but dating someone significantly younger than him is unnerving. he'd rather just date someone of a similar age with the maturity to carry a relationship and leave the age gap to fantasies and roleplay

nathan bateman: he prefers someone the same age who he can have intelligent conversations with but also have a drink and boogie down. that being said, he's not overly picky; as long as you're hot and not a bore

poe dameron: poe prefers partners the same age if not a little younger who he can take out on wild joyrides and who can accompany him on missions. he loves partners who can keep up with him and banter with him but also have the experience needed to understand and support the general of the resistance

john i of england: more of a need than a preference honestly. i've said it before and i'll say it again; john 👏 is 👏 a 👏 brat 👏 he needs someone older, more mature (and probably more physically fit) to teach and guide him and give him a little punishment when he needs it. he needs someone who can bring him back down to earth when he's being petulant and he's less likely to respect someone when they're younger, thinking 'how could they know more than me, they're younger than me!'

detective marco 'fartman' cruz: again, marco needs someone more mature to bring him back down to earth. he isn't as bratty as john but he still needs to be kept on a short leash as he can be quite silly goofy sometimes

mikael boghosian: mikael doesn't need someone older but he prefers someone with life experience who can sympathise with what he's gone through and they can kind of have a mutual understanding of previous struggles. this doesn't have to come strictly from being older as it can come in the form of abuse, chronic illness, etc. he just prefers someone who understands pain and can empathise with his experiences and sensitivities

robbie paulson: robbie needs a hand taking care of himself, especially as he probably has some deep-seated trauma after being coerced into killing two girls. that being said, he's not like john who just takes and takes and takes. robbie absolutely gives back with unflinching loyalty and little gestures of affection (usually giving gifts or unprompted snuggles)

vasily 'shiv' shivkov: shiv needs someone with maturity and life experience, someone who can stop him from making stupid mistakes and patch him up when he gets in over his head. he likes having people who can hang around with him and be silly but, in most cases, that's just ended up with people taking advantage of him and his immaturity. he finds comfort in the more mature and level-headed individuals who can give him a reality check and have his best interests at heart

misc.

blue jones:

with the kind of man he is, he likes to hold the upper hand on any and all counts. and, if his partner is younger, he can claim seniority and keep that upper hand

that being said, if he's with said partner because he actually likes them, he'll probably go for someone the same age or older so he feels like he can trust them more (and so he can sub a little if he wants to, feeling safe that they've got experience)

moon boys:

marc prefers someone the same age (if not a little younger) as he feels like he can connect with them easier. if they're a little younger, he has a bit of a saviour complex going on where he hopes he can give his partner the love and compassion that he was never given when he was younger, giving them a safe space where he can protect them

steven prefers someone the same age if not a little older who he can take on dates to the museum and the library. someone who enjoys quiet nights in watching documentaries, drinking hot drinks and listening to him infodump about ancient egypt. again, that doesn't necessarily mean age is the main factor but it's usually who he goes for as they seem to have the same interests and likes

jake prefers them younger. he likes being the big, strong papí that his partner needs; firm but fair
