Soldier, Poet, King

They say,

Do not bite at the hand that feeds you.

Do not slap at the hand that guides you.

Your body, Their sword,

They say.

You are nothing more than a shield.

The soldier is nothing more than a

puppet before their king.

As the poet writes,

and writes,

Sonnets and Soliloquies left

Unheard,

Unread,

Unwanted.

But the King knows all.

Do not betray him,

They say

For the whispers of the wind are not kind to you or yours,

The trees will not forgive easily,

They will reveal your secrets.

Spies among the crowd,

Unnoticed.

The king,

Oh the king,

With their sharp gaze,

Sitting on a throne built of blood,

lies.

Just as they lie to

Their soldiers,

Their people.

A society left unchecked,

Unbalanced,

Left in the hands of a child

who didn’t know what to make of it.

Left to ruin.

The only one left to save it nothing more than a faded memory,

Death’s greatest companion. The poet who spews the truth

Not knowing or fearing the wrath of the tyrant.

For all the poet knows is insanity.

And who would listen to him?

His songs lost to time,

Lost at sea as he dwindles and dissolves

Like paper in a fire.

His books burned,

Just like his reputation.

A traitor to his liege,

Nothing more than a turncoat

Against his people.

He has betrayed us,

They say.

He has betrayed everything we hold dear.

He deserves to burn.

He deserves this.
