3.04 — Gwaine

Arthur & co getting transported to the time before magic was outlawed and preparing for a dark and scary world of bloodshed and horror only to find a world that shines and gleams with happy, smiling faces and magic flying free. Sorcerers are a natural part of daily life and are no different than the average citizen. Arthur is a bit stumped and Merlin is overjoyed, practically bursting with joy as he takes in the world around him. He keeps running off to perform magic openly but Arthur worries about him getting hurt bc he doesn’t trust this world so Merlin has to keep sneaking away but Arthur just keeps chasing after him and Merlin keeps running away and Arthur…eventually buys a child safety harness (cough a leash cough) to keep Merlin with him. Lancelot helps him break out. Arthur puts them both on a leash- I mean, child safety harness. Gwaine busts them out bc hes a slut for casual treason and pissing off Arthur

The funny thing is that Arthur is always portrayed as some popular jock in modern au fics, when in canon he is a friendless loser.. all his friends are just Merlin’s friends who just started accepting that Arthur was there and ordering them around because Merlin was busy giving Arthur cow eyes when he wasn’t giving big speeches about how great of a King Arthur would become/is

WIP - Sir Gwaine x Reader

Sir Gwaine x Reader: Born For This (working title, heavily inspired by the song by The Score)

However, with one hand, he let go of his sword and backhanded you in the face. Your eyes closed in reflex/response, and you were shoved backward, tripping over something unseen in the dark. He closed in as you tried to quickly regain your senses, sword defensively blocking/in front of you.

Then, the man stops with a jolt, the sound of a sword piercing behind him. In the next curious moment, he drops to the ground with wide lifeless eyes.

“No one hurts you/my lady while I’m around,” said the red cloaked knight.

“Gwaine!” You beamed, dropping the sword in time with him reaching his hand out for you. Pulling you up/to your feet, they embraced briefly.

“Maybe we should get you some chain-mail and armor if you’re going to make a habit of this,” he smiled/teased.

“All clear,” Sir Percival called out, a few others doing the same.

I started watching Merlin under the assumption that I’d get some fun history nerd moments and that Merthur was just another fannon mlm ship with little canonical basis but HOLY SHIT I’ve literally seen cannon straight couples with less sexual tension than whatever the fuck those two had going on.

New concepts of Merlin’s magical abilities I would love to see in fanfics and headcanons:

1. Any person who drinks a bit of Merlin’s blood gains the ability to use magic. The show states magic is learned, people study for years to learn how to practice magic, only some people are born with a natural aptitude towards it. By drinking Merlin’s blood anyone can suddenly use magic, even if they never studied it before, but they’ll still have to learn how to control it.

2. Merlin can’t die by drowning, he can breathe under water for a longer time than an average human, but if water gets inside his lungs and he can’t breathe he will go into a dormant state until his lungs are cleared again, it could be hours, days or years (or centuries), he will always regain consciousness once he can breathe again.

3. Merlin can only be killed by weapons forged by magic or by the complete destruction of his body (like burning), if there’s even the smallest possibility of his body being healed, it will heal. Merlin does die from other common factors, but he comes back again. For example, if he’s given a deadly poison or stabbed by a common weapon, his heart will stop and he’ll die, then in a few minutes his heart will restart and he’ll live again. But every time he dies and revives, he’s a little less himself, like some parts are chipped away.

4. Merlin can build resistance to poison. Once he comes in contact with a certain poison he’ll become immune to it’s effects. Based on the previous concept, once Merlin learns he won’t permanently die from poison, he starts experimenting with various ones, his heart stops but he eventually comes back to life and heals from it’s effects, from then on he’ll be unaffected by it if he ever comes in contact with the poison again.

5. Merlin can enter the mind of animals at will, perceive the world through their senses and control their actions (like warging from ASOIAF). For example, while camping outside, he could enter the mind of a owl during the night and keep watch through it’s eyes while his actual body rests.

If anyone has other concepts and headcanons about Merlin’s magic and/or immortality I would love to know them too! Also english is not my first language, sorry if there’s any mistakes.

One of the first prophecies in Albion was of Emrys and the Once and Future King. Every Seer in the realm had similar visions of the two powerful, glorious beings that would one day walk the earth. The prophecies remained prophecies for a few centuries before it began to grow into a fairytale story. Children were told stories of Emrys and the Once and Future King that would one day bring peace to Albion. Then it grew more and more as a story that people began to forget it was once a prophecy. When Uther began his Purge, he changed the story he himself had grown up hearing. He made Emrys out to be a creature of pure evil. If Emrys was magic incarnate, he couldn’t be anything other than evil. Children still heard of Emrys after the Purge, but he was a boogeyman, a villain that would snatch disobeying children from their homes and feast of them in the woods.

Arthur grew up hearing tales of the horrible, fearsome Emrys. Uther used Emrys as a tool to get Arthur to behave and be a perfect prince. Merlin heard of the fairytale version of Emrys from his mother. The Druids continued to worship Emrys as their deity but people thought them mad, he’s nothing more than a character in a story, but the Druids never forgot the prophecy. And with their Sight, their ability to recognize Emrys on sight, Uther lumped Druids in with the evilness he had slapped on Emrys’ name. He said the Druids performed sacrifices and rituals in Emrys’ name to try and conjure the demon to steal children’s souls.

Anyways, post-magic reveal Mordred calls Merlin Emrys and Arthur just freezes bc he Knows that Mordred is a Druid, and he Knows that Druids worship Emrys and would not take his name in vain or call someone else the name of their deity, and he was brought up hearing stories of Emrys being a demon, pure evil. So he just kinda. Looks. At Merlin who just grumbles about being called that but responds as if it’s normal and Arthur is a bit terrified. He’s like “You’re Emrys?” To Merlin who shrugs and is like “I guess” (unaware of the horrifying stories Uther spun of Emrys, only knowing what his mother and Kilgharrah said and how the Druids worship him).

The other knights have heard of the Demon Emrys except Percival who grew up in Druid camps but doesn’t have their Sight so he didn’t know Merlin was Emrys until right now. Gwaine laughing a little uncomfortably to break the tension and is like “So…taste any good children lately?” Arthur slaps him up back the head. Merlin just looks disgusted and confused. Mordred and Percival are offended on his behalf. Lancelot is amused by it all and sits back to watch the chaos. Leon and Elyan are shaking their heads at Gwaine’s stupidity. Why the hell would he say something like that to a DEMON????

Modern Merlin Reincarnation Idea:

The knights, Gwen, and several other players from Merlin are reincarnated. Some more aware of their past lives than others.

Gwaine and Will, being two of them.

Long story short, both Gwaine and Will want their shit and their friends’ shit back from a museum and team up to steal it back, completely unaware that the other is also reincarnated up until the point Merlin and (an immortal) Leon catch them in the act of stealing from THEIR museum.

Would you read a fem!Merlin fanfiction? I just think it would be funny because of how many silly situations she'd get in as a girl who a lot of people mistake for a boy, all the while she's serving the clotpole of a prince.

While I would follow some of the plot, I plan on making it make sense. Hunith willingly sending Merlin to a place where magic is punishable by death? No. Merlin trying to help Morgana out? Yes. Arthur and Morgana having petty fights over who should Merlin work for? Yes. Morgana forcing Arthur to have a girl's nights with her, Merlin and Gwen (because he has no other friends by that point) and them annoying the shit out of him? Yes. Resetting Arthur's character development over and over again? No. And so on.

I plan on really working on the character's psyche and relationships with other characters because that part really fascinated me the most about BBC's Merlin.

Anyway, I plan on writing it in a way that even if people haven't watched the show or aren't familiar with Arthurian legends can still read and enjoy it.
