Wrong use of plurals is probably my biggest linguistic pet peeve, this one included.
hi your local jew here reminding you that cherubim, seraphim, nephilim, and words of that nature ARE PLURAL and therefore should not be used to refer to a singular one of these creatures like i see every day of my g-dforsaken life
a single instance would be referred to as a cherub, a seraph, a nephil, et cetera
these words originated from hebrew, and in hebrew -im and -ot are our plural endings. so if you say, like, nephilim in order to refer to a single nephil, it’s like you’re saying “look, a dogs!” it just doesn’t match up and you look really silly
goyim you can reblog please do so to spare yourselves and your friends from this thing that i legitimately see everywhere i turn

Hey, hey! RnR not requested! (Patreon)
#Doodles#SCII#DAX#ZEX#Does anyone still use RnR lol#I think I was a little too late for that but in my brief stint on FF.net I did get a couple reviews so *shruggles*#ANYway lol#The topic of VUX poetry came up and it would not leave me alone#But at the same time it is so hard to English-phoneticize VUK ZIX into my preferred poetry method!#So I gave up and went with a playground chant lol#I also wasn't sure which direction it would be read in apart from bottom-up :0#Japanese is top-down right-to-left so maybe it's inverse?? I don't know!#That's what I went with this time anyhow lol#Also making up rules on the spot lol - ''a'' is always contextually inferred by its surroundings#Have I thought about the implications of inferred subject/singular vs. plural phrasing? No! Give me some time tho ♪#Lol#I have also pretty firmly come to the conclusion that -ing sounds just aren't a thing lol#At least not written and not comfortably spoken#You could force the sound but it's exactly what it says on the tin - forced#So the rhyme-scheme is a bit funny haha - that rhyme doesn't translate at all! But it is still fun to write a little ship-poem hehe#ZEX does not approve but it's not his poem is it! Tentacles to yourself! Don't stick your trunk where it's not wanted!#I do love when DAX is silly and lovestruck haha

no shade intended but it's honestly very hot that, despite Schaubach misusing the die(singular)/dice(plural) noun form in the game system bts earlier, 5 minutes into the episode Brennan is using the correct form
#die vs dice is a hill i'm going to die (singular) on#i will not rest until all of the ttrpg scene stops saying 'a dice' when they mean 'a die'#or the current definition of 'die' (meaning singular rolly rock) is deemed archaic by a dictionary i respect#die is my oxford comma. my whom. my less vs fewer#any pointless grammar rule that authority figures insist on you getting 'right'#but you know in your heart of hearts doesn't actually clarify speakers intent because the distinction is outdated?#i agree with you on ALL of those. except die vs dice#die is singular and dice is plural#never stop blowing up#dimension 20#di20

greetings unsuspecting followers and mutuals
it is time for me to info dump about the Latin language because if I had to learn how Latin declensions work
so must everyone else
@electronix-arts knowledge upon thee
Latin is what's called a highly inflected language, meaning that the endings of words will change a lot depending on its grammar
English does not do this nearly as much as language like Latin and German
for example, if you say: "the dog bit the cat" that sentence means that the dog was the one doing the biting, and the cat was the one receiving
but if you change it to: "the cat bit the dog" now the cat is the one doing the biting, and the dog is the one receiving the bite
in Latin you could translate that first sentence as: "canis felem momordi" whereas the second sentence would instead be: "canem feles momordi"
the word order is the same, but who is doing the biting has been flipped feles canem momordi canem momordi feles they all mean the same thing
there is a preferred word order, but it doesn't matter as much as in English for example, in my experience, a lot of sentences will end with "est" despite that being the word for "is" "the dog is white" "canis ablus est"
I'll use Ursus (bear) for this next example for a noun like "ursus" the ending changes depending on if it's nominative, genitive, dative, accusative, ablative, or vocative Latin is a gender language too, so it also changes depending on whether it's masculine or feminine is also changes depending on if it's singular or plural
there's also a neuter case, which in theory one could attempt to use if they don't know the gender to want to be vague on purpose
But it wasn't really used in this manner, typically a word would just be in 1 of 5 declensions each with its own endings, unless it's in first or third (masculine, feminine) in which case you could use either depending on the subject If it's a word that's in first or third and an unknown gender or a group of mixed gender, then you just default to first the word for friend is amicus/amica a group of all guy friends would be amici a group of all girl friends would be amicae a group of guy and girl friends would be amici
that's 24 possible endings for 1 noun
do not get me started on the fuckin verb declension I mean, just look at this:
#latin#I love languages they're funny#there's a couple inflections in English but not nearly as many#there's plurals of course [dog becomes dogs]#the genitive (possessive) case with 's [the cat's toy]#third-person singular also adds s to the end [I speak vs he/she speaks]#if something is negative [can vs can't]#past and present [mix mixed mixing]#and comparative and superlative [big bigger biggest]

We Czechs suffer the same pains every time someone says/writes "kolaches". The S is redundant, you fools!
I suppose I will have to think of it as "pocketses", that should calm down my linguistic seething somewhat...

new pronunciation poll! this one is about everyone's favorite word, data. things to keep in mind:
this poll aims to capture your pronunciation of the word "data" when used to mean "information" or "facts". that is, don't answer based on how you pronounce the name of the Star Trek character!
don't overthink the phonetic spellings i've used. i'm really just looking for how you pronounce the first vowel sound - is it the vowel in 'day' or the vowel in 'cat'?
i am also interested to know whether, when "data" is the subject of a verb, you conjugate that verb in the singular or in the plural. examples:
the data is stored (singular) vs. the data are stored (plural)
the data was collected (singular) vs. the data were collected (plural)
the data says (singular) vs. the data say (plural)
the data looks like (singular) vs. the data look like (plural)
#would also love to know if people say 'this data' or 'these data'. and use 'it/its' vs. 'they/them/their' for the pronouns#but that does seem like a separate question to me than whether the verb is singular or plural so i left it out#and for people who use both pronunciations i wonder whether they are used in very specific contexts with no overlap#or are more or less randomly interchangeable#but there's only so much one can do with a one-question ten-option poll lol#fun with pronunciation#my posts

we need to bring back thee/thou or whatever cause whenever i'm calling my friend and they say 'you' i always think it's referring to the current fronter even though most of the time they are using it in a plural/collective sense
#i'm being silly its not really that big of a deal#but yeah it would definitely be nice to know if it was being used as a singular or a plural#kinda off-topic but same with the word 'we'#like i'm referring to 'we' including the listener vs 'we' not including the listener#okay i'm rambling now time to add actual tags#plural#plurality#pluralgang#plural community#endo safe#pro endo

I know I'm not posting much lately but I started a new job and--yeah
And it's not that I don't think abt Metallica, it's more like that my thoughts go like
"king nothing > memory. Which is not a unpopular opinion, per se, but like. Memory won the continuity live war till 2023. What a world we live in"
And
"WELCOME TO THIS LIFE
BORN INTO THE FIGHT
HERE TO CLAIM YOUR DREAM
Dreams..... No?
Dream SIGULAR. I forgot that it was singular, I sang it plural, here to claim your dreams. Usually in English don't you say "claim your dreamS"? Ohhhhhh, but it's singular bc for james it can't be anything else.
>>>>>'there was no plan b. Plan b, c, d was making plan a work'
This is autobiographical as UN1, which also starts with birth seen as something immediately difficult. But screaming Suicide is more Abt yourself -you, your voice- and something external giving you a hand; while UN1 is others, what others do to you-- till it transforms you"

Potentially unpopular opinion given that misspelling words is treated as a crime (and y'all know that it is)
But I would rather deal with a world of spelling errors than to have to constantly fight "auto correct" just to say what i want to say.
#and this isnt just about cussing#this is also about having to fight to have your name spelled correctly#or having to teach it regionalisms or goddamn singular vs plural!!#no i didnt mean bedsheets stop correcting bedsheet its right its right dammit!

Will Roland as Uncle Peenie as a Virgin Mary Dancer (from the 2015 8th annual show)
#i captioned with the utmost serenity as has always been surrounding the whole affair#i interpret having the orange aviators as still also specifically being uncle peenie#that along with the fact that the (on our) leftmost dancer is someone being Just a dancer vs the other three as preexisting roles#reflecting on how one supposes mister chestnut is technically in the buff. if you were anut is a shell your clothes. do you have Nudity#meanwhile naturally also the same other uncle peenie costume elements but the new york islanders jacket#can imagine it was there previously. and then imagine the choreo lmao#and maybe just outright wrecking that tank top like with my entire life in shambles now obviously lol. oh we have fun....#may have the budget for a handful of not so durable tanks for this business#will roland#uncle peenie#virgin mary dancer#would be plural but my angle is the Singular Wrole at any given moment#joe iconis christmas extravaganza#❤️

I say it because I’m a pedant who believes English should have a distinction between second person singular and plural. “You guys” is too clunky and gendered, thou/thee and exclusively plural you is never coming back, y’all is simple, elegant, well-known, understandable, unambiguous, and rolls off the tongue
Y’all should use y’all
If w’all use y’all, w’all will make English better
Reblog if you say "Y'all"
#y’all#better English#“all y'all” is reserved for very large groups#use y’all#second person plural vs singular

Singular vs. Plural Table Names in SQL Server: Best Practices.
A table naming convention is a systematic way of naming the tables in a database. The goal is to make the table’s purpose clear, concise, and easily understandable. There are two primary schools of thought when it comes to naming tables: using singular names (e.g., User, Order, Product) and using plural names (e.g., Users, Orders, Products). Each approach has its proponents and its…

As someone who's still learning English.
Why "they are" is still singular and nobody though about using "they is". Also "you is" could be singular and "you are" plural.
Am I the only one thinking it?

Very epic. Reblogging for others and potential future use.
Folks, friends, y’all…. esk*mo is a slur. I understand a lot of people don’t know that, I don’t want to be a dick about it, but I’ve been seeing it in fics. Wanna write “esk*mo kisses”? Just say “nuzzled noses” or something.
I’m not here to call anybody out, it’s been in multiple fics, I’m not vague posting. This is just a psa. 👍🏻
#i knew about the slur thing already#but i didnt know the plural vs singular. Cool!!#I wanna do more reasearch on various indigenous tribes.#culture is so cool#sorta off topic?? but 100% agree why not just say nuzzled nozes its cuter
