I'm frankly so sick of the "Caleb was just sad" narrative, because it's such a reductive misreading of both his personality and his narrative. He is deeply self-destructive for much of the campaign, yes, but it's a by-product of guiltily smothering his righteous fury for as long as he has, and when he is not burning with that rage, he is simply tired with everything instead.

Fundamentally, he exists within the paradox of the fact that there is no end that he can see that would satisfy both the fury and the exhaustion. But at no point is he merely sad.

teia was recruited off the streets by the crows when she was eight by then-7th talon and head of house cantori, salvestro cantori.

she took quickly to crow life—an unusual trait for a recruit so young. however, living on the streets of treviso prepared her for the vicious lifestyle of the antivan crows.

she had seen death by age 4 and had plunged a knife into a man’s neck by age 7 in self defense. an orphan with only other street children as her family, teia was introduced to the crueler aspects of the world very young.

she was ten when she caught caterina’s eye. the first talon had been observing the training of the crows’ youngest recruits and was impressed by how teia seemed to outwit opponents both older and bigger than she was. caterina praised her, which completely altered the course of teia’s life. from that point on, she always kept teia in her periphery, and teia - more or less - imprinted on caterina like a duckling.

by age 12, caterina was actively involved in teia’s life and training. though she remained salvestro’s protégé in name, it was caterina who began to mold her to her liking.

teia was a tool—for the crows but also for caterina, who intended to use her against her grandsons. to teia, caterina became the mother she never had over night. there was nothing teia wouldn’t do for her, making her the perfect ward.

so, caterina began to instruct teia on manipulation—which, as teia entered her teenage years—evolved into manipulation through seduction. she taught her how to read people, how to dismantle them piece by piece, how to torment them psychologically until they were nothing but a husk come their death.

she challenged teia to hone these skills on various people, but her final test was always meant to be one person in particular: illario dellamorte.

by 18, caterina promised teia that she would want for nothing if she could pull this scheme off: seduce illario, make him fall in love with her over a period of years, and then pull the emotional rug out from under him.

all to prove that illario was too soft and too weak to distractions.

teia did not hesitate. she always did what nonna asked, even when she was hurt in the process (and she had been, at this point, several times).

she played her part with a surgical precision. it was almost too easy. she was beautiful and well-loved, and both of them enjoyed the attention.

two years in, caterina grew impatient. “commit to it, or be done with it.” a small part of teia was beginning to feel remorse for what she was about to do—

the sick feeling was replaced with one of devotion and satisfaction.

“this is why you are my favorite,” caterina told her. teia would do anything to hear those words from caterina.

over the years, she did. teia pushed herself to limits of psychological and physical exhaustion; she found her niche of killing ‘bad’ men. she became one of caterina’s personal weapons, as well as her eyes and ears among the guild.

when caterina called, she came. she did whatever she asked without hesitation.

any time someone spoke of caterina’s cruelty, she defended her. caterina had never laid a hand on teia, how could she ever do such a thing to anyone.

this was her nonna—her mother despite the term of endearment. nonna loved her. nonna would never hurt her. nonna would never hurt anyone.

except when she did (teia knew this; she was no fool). teia herself had been a victim of this hurt, however indirect.

still, love prevented her from seeing caterina for who she was (and still is).

if she tells herself the same lies over and over again, maybe she will continue to believe them.

i've been debating for a while now on whether i should make Yone half-chinese, half-japanese. given that he && yasuo have different mothers, and the fact that Ionia is very vague in the Eastern cultures that it comprises of, i think it could be very possible. i've been digging around a lot of Ionian history and making comparisions based on observations of like, skinlines and stuff, and how a lot of it seems to draw especially from more commonly known asian cultures ( japanese, chinese, korean, thai ) versus the less commonly known/spoken of ( laos, malaysia, nepal -- as some examples ) so i feel like it's possible? there are a LOT of motifs && symbolism drawn from China, Japan, and Korea ( ahri being a kumiho, also known as a jiǔwěihú ( or  húli jīng ) in chinese, and kitsune in japanese -- a nine-tailed fox that can transform into a beautiful woman. it's story slightly varies from culture to culture, but it's baseline remains the same: a fox spirit ) : Wukong being quite literally an inspiration from the actual Chinese historical figure Sun Wukong from the novel Journey To The West -- as just a couple examples of the cultural significances represented and drawn from to inspire Ionia.

i wanna do more digging and studying since i don't want to make any mis-representations or fall into racist stereotypes as a white person writing an asian character, but i do feel it could be a possibility for Yone, especially since he seems to share motifs between both Chinese and Japanese culture together. if anything, i like to think his mother was Chinese-native and died during childbirth, which is why he was raised solely by his father until he too, passed away. Yasuo's mother is also ambiguous and left up to debate, so she could've also been Japanese or from another culture. in modern day, i believe Yone's mother would've been a Chinese immigrant who met his and Yasuo's father ( a Japanese immigrant ) that got married in Japan and had Yone. she probably would've died when he was fairly young too, and his father remarried to Yasuo's mother who helped raise him and Yasuo.

but hey, if any of my asian moots, especially those who play league of legends have any input, i'm more than happy to hear it! i want to be respectful and accurate in my portrayals of characters that aren't white so i want to approach this with as much decorum as possible. i'm still doing a fuckton of research to educate myself and figure out where i wanna go with this :>
