While flipping through mdzs to verify some stray thoughts of mine, I happened to fall into a translation discrepancy that I feel really, really emphasizes how important it is to have a proper grasp on the language you are translating before translating for a public audience.
Now before we get too deep into this, I want to reiterate that I am someone who does not understand Mandarin in any form but has been reading translations (both by humans and machines) for a few years now. However, because I have been reading translations that tend to follow the Mandarin more closely in grammar and because I haven't shied away from reading machine-made or bad human translations, I have noticed some places where mistranslations from Mandarin to English are common: pronouns, verb-subject matching, negatives, prepositions, and conjunctions. For this post, we will be focusing on the latter two.
In the lead-up to the Wen invasion of Lotus Pier, we are given a scene where Madam Yu whips Wei Wuxian, and in this scene, we are given a glimpse as to Madam Yu's average punishments towards the young ward.
While Madam Yu always pelted him with hostile words, she’d never really hit him hard before—two or three lashes at most, or being made to kneel or confined indoors, and it never took Jiang Fengmian long to release him from that.
—Vol. 3, Chapt. 12: Sandu: The Three Poisons, 7seas
In the past, although Madam Yu had always come at him with harsh words, she had never truly been cruel to him. The most that he’d been through were two or three strikes and being grounded. He’d also be let out by Jiang FengMian soon later.
—Chapt. 57: Poisons, exr
Reading these back-to-back, it should be very clear that though the same section is being translated from the same exact source, these translations do not say the same thing. The official stresses that Madam Yu had never hit Wei Wuxian "that hard" before, as well as saying that his punishments were a few lashes OR being made to kneel OR being confined, three separate punishments never taken together according to this diction. The exr translation, however, states that Madam Yu had "never truly been cruel to him" (emphasis mine) and that him being whipped was in addition to being confined. The emphasis on the strength of her lashings is absent, but an emphasis on the intent behind her actions—that she never meant to be honestly cruel to her ward—is established in its stead. (While this section as translated by exr does not mention kneeling, later scenes reflecting on Wei Wuxian's childhood in Lotus Pier do.)
Both of these translations... are wrong.
If we give exr the benefit of the doubt by virtue of being the original completed English translation of mdzs, then the official 7seas release should automatically raise red flags for the ways it seems to directly contradict the narrative that has existed for a few years before the novel was licensed. It doesn't help that the official has been riddled with many mistranslations and omissions from the very first volume, lowering any credibility it would otherwise have to stand on. But if we were to examine the rest of the exr translation, then the emphasis on Madam Yu's intent also rings false given the fact that we are told over and over again in this same translation that 1) Madam Yu is, in fact, unnecessarily, illogically, and erratically mean-spirited and cruel, and 2) Wei Wuxian knows this even at this time in his life (shoutout to the Lotus Pod Seeds extra) and understands her actions as targeted cruelty. What does the actual text say, then?
Although Madam Yu always spoke ill of him before, her hand had never been this viciously cruel. At most, she whipped him two or three times and ordered him to kneel down and be confined to his room, and he would be released by Jiang Fengmian sometime later.
—@jiangwanyinscatmom (emphasis mine)
Madam Yu has never been "as cruel" as in that moment when whipping Wei Wuxian, because normally she only whips him 2-3 times. She would whip him a few times and send him to the ancestral hall to kneel and be in confinement, which matches up to the memories that Wei Wuxian reflects on in other parts of the novel. This translation gets rid of the character inconsistencies that the other two translations create. So how did we get here? Remember how I pointed out those common Mandarin-to-English translation mistakes? Well, both the exr and 7seas translations fall into the trap of confusing conjunctions and prepositions. That's how we get a list of punishments rather than an order of events for a singular punishment type. That's how we get "not truly cruel" instead of "not as cruel." That's how we get these sections contradicting what we know about Madam Yu's personality and behavior from the rest of the novel through those two translations. Unfortunately, both translation teams just happened to flub in the same area in slightly different ways, and while I'm willing to give a multi-lingual grade-school student translating in their spare time the benefit of the doubt, a paid translator with a translation team hired by a professional publishing house should have better quality control than a spare-time hobbyist.
Also, just in case anyone wants more proof on what mxtx meant for us to take away about Madam Yu's treatment of Wei Wuxian from this scene, it was also apparently so important to mxtx for readers to know that Madam Yu was truly cruel to Wei Wuxian during his childhood that the act of her routinely whipping him whenever he was in her presence was something that was added into the revised mdzs. It was not in the original unedited version of the novel.
In the past, although Lady Yu always insulted or patronized him, she never laid a hand on him. At worst, she’d make him kneel for prolonged periods of time, but he’d always get bailed out by Jiang FengMian after a while.
—Chapt. 57. Act 12: Sandu/Three Poisons, Part 2, qinghe-nie
#mdzs#human compares translations#fuck me i might as well make a translation comparison tag now#anyways i also love to see what mdzs adds or removed from revised versions of her novels#cause her adding in the whippings into this scene to emphasize madam yu's horribleness#reminds me of her removing mu qing's mother in tgcf as his excuse for his heinous betrayal#she's working to remove things that cause enough ambiguity that fans begin to argue for the virtue of egregious behavior#which she obviously does not want

Historical Fiction Recommendation
A bit of an unusual post, but I recently learned about the existence of the Desert Peach comic series created by Donna Barr and I need more people to know about it because it's a true gem. A big shoutout goes to @darksideoftwenty who introduced me to this comic, otherwise I may have never even knew that it existed!
To put it simple, the story is about Rommel's fictional gay younger brother called Pfirsich (sidenote, this is literally just the German word for peach and not actually used as a name, but it's still cute😅). He is the leader of a small support unit of the Afrika Korps, which consists mostly of people that are considered "misfits" in other parts of the army. The individual stories consist of all sorts of adventures and shenanigans but also have overarching plot points.
I think it's important to not let yourself fool by the potential first impression with this comic. At first glance, Pfirsich may seem like the absolute stereotype of the effeminate gay man, but there's actually so much more to him. This applies to the other characters too, as the story goes on and we get to know more about them, their personalities just become more and more well-rounded. At least since issue 3 I've been absolutely hooked.
For a comic that was written in the 80s and 90s, I was also extremely impressed how delicately it touches on and handles topics that are still relevant today, and manages to balance chaos and silliness with more serious and darker moments. Of course, not everything may be politically correct by today's standards and you should keep that in mind, but honestly I think there are pieces of media that are far more recent and still did things like this much worse.
The comic is available entirely for free on Webtoon, so if WW2 fiction is something you're into you should definitely give it a try. Apparently there was also a musical made back in the 90s that was based on the comics, but I could barely find anything related to it, I wish there existed recordings😭 Please note that although there aren't really depictions of sensitive content - injuries and (partial) nudity may occur but are usually quite simplified thanks to the art style - but due to the subject matter, it is targeted at adult audiences.
I'm currently at issue 18 and can't wait to continue reading! Here's just one small excerpt showing Pfirsich and Erwin (dancing together and I love how small it makes Erwin look xD), their brother relationship is hilarious and just absolutely adorable <3

ALL THIS TIME. YOU HAD A TATTOO???? 🎤🎤
zb1 reacts to reader having tattoos a/n: back on my random zb1 drabble bullshit (I'm struggling with a longer post + I have a test at 8 am tomorrow. yes this is my coping mechanism). this is also for a potentially very small target audience but shoutout to my tattooed zeroses I love y'all!!
jiwoong
"did they have accreditation?? was it a legit studio??" needs to know you're not going to get an infection, otherwise he kind of doesn't care. if it's not his style he will tell you but in a ~mature and nice way~ ("I wouldn't get it personally but it looks good on you").
zhang hao
"🤨🤨 you know that's going to be on your body for the rest of your life right?" he's not judging you for having tattoos, but he IS checking the lines and colouring to judge if you had a good tattoo artist or not. I feel like he will tell you you overpaid (doesn't matter how much you actually paid. he thinks it's too much).
hanbin
wants to see your artist's other work on their social media. starts discussing tattoo styles and designs he thinks are cool and/or wants to get. shows you the ones he has and wants your opinion on them. you guys are tattoo besties now.
matthew
kind of unfazed tbh. like he wants to see them and inspect to see the artistry but after that he doesn't really care. would ALSO ask about the price because he wants to know if you got a good deal. thinks his are cooler than yours but he doesn't tell you that.
taerae
loses his MIND. just stares at your tattoo in complete silence with his jaw on the ground. after the initial shock he has a million questions. tell him everything. he is equal parts intrigued, fascinated and terrified. he thinks you're 10 times cooler now.
ricky
congratulations- he thinks you're the coolest person ever. probably has some decent knowledge on tattoos in general but wants to know EVERYTHING about your design, when you got it, how it was. also immediately attracted to you probably but that's a can of worms for another day.
gyubin
congratulations- you broke his brain. ngl I think he is too scared of tattoos to ever consider getting one himself so he is v fascinated. wants to touch them but worries it will hurt youuu 💔 wants to know about the meaning of the design and all that jazz.
gunwook
"omg that must have really hurt :((" genuinely concerned, like isn't it dangerous?? what if it leaks out?? is it really in your skin forEVER?? they kind of scare him at first ngl but when he figures out they aren't going to attack him he wants to trace them all the time.

thoughts on ksi’s new banger ?🔥🔥🔥
STOP IT BROTHER IT'S SO ADDICTIVE AHHAHAHAHAH
lemme give some NON SERIOUS, GOOFY THOUGHTS n then give some /srs thought-provokers for you.
So, what are my thoughts on this funny tune?:
It's just really funny.
It is so... discord and anime coded. It's giving "I picked up x and just... started - and it's been a whirlwind since then, and idk how i got here, but im a master of the craft now.." And it is so jokes, makes me wanna laugh at him + tell him to su because of how stupidly GOOFY IT IS
I go to skl still btw for those who don't know, and being among ppl my age who have a similar internet feed as me is HILARIOUS - BC THIS SONG IS EVERYWHERE.
Like bro - my skl is celebrating black history month (shoutout to black ppl + all POCs asw) and one thing the year-13-diversity-group have been doing is playing songs by black artists with speakers over the canteen every lunch.
So there's genuinely been a whole hall of people chanting FEIN this week at my school.
But not only that - thick of it was also played, and fuck me was it acc hilarious hearing a whole chorus of "THIS IS HOW THE STORY GOES!". Even at the end of assembly where the speakers blasted Thick Of It whilst everyone walked out as a fun lil treat. Too fucken funny bro.
The way me n friends will just burst into song asw with the: "From the screen, to the ring, to the pen to the king!" with anime characteristics asw is always such a little giggle for us
But now...
Serious thoughts about JJ n this music stuff?
I don't feel for JJ - because he's warranted all the hate or jokes upon himself - but I empathise. I feel sympathy for why he feels like shit... But I fear that he does deserve it.
Starting with: Lunchly.
Lunchly? It was always a stupid business venture for him. Great for Logan and MrBeast - but i fear jj just got roped along bc he's logan's business partner, now.
Because bffr- what the fuck reasoning does JJ have to be marketing a product to Americans?
Lunchables is almost solely for American Kiddies, but JJ's influence is prettttyyyyy UK n Europe based. Sure, he's got fans in America - but it's so stupid for KSI - a British celebrity - to be marketing and having to endorse and support a pretty primarily American product that isn't gonna touch the UK for a long time (god bless the EU health policies)
So, because he has everyone hating on him for releasing lunchly - a very poor quality food which is marketed as a "better as lunchables" product whilst having negligible differences....
KSI's ruined his credibility. Because he's becoming a joke.
Bro built up a fanbase for 10+ YEARS of people who followed him because they honestly liked him, and is ruining all that trust and relationship by using this same fanbase for money and hoping they buy into his quick money-grabs... It's got Logan Paul and American YouTube/business written all over it ibfr... But it's so saddening to see it happening to YouTubers I really did like..
So, everyone thinks KSI's a joke because he released a shit product and won't take DanTDM's thwack of reality, that says "JJ, what you're doing is immoral and unethical."
Aaaand then JJ drops a song.
Reason?
Well, it can either just be that JJ wants to post music again... Or to distract everyone from the fact that Lunchly and JJ's credibility is honestly fucking awful atm.
Problem now, is that instead of people eating up the new music as the KSI team probably expected - "YAY, KSI RELEASED NEW MUSIC!" - everyone's hating on it because:
a) no-one likes him because he beefed with DanTDM b) no-one likes him because he uses his audience's trust to make himself more money with no interest in the goodness of his fans c) it isn't a very.... hardman song.
JJ knows his audience. His target audience and who watches most of his content. Probably Middle-Older teen boys... So when you release a wet little song talking about your life and hardships you face with a cutesy lil beat and melody - THESE BOYS THAT YOUR FANBSE IS MADE OF THINK IT'S STUPID!!!!!!!! BECAUSE GUESS WHAT FANBASE YOU'VE CREATED!!!!!! ONE THAT'S COMPRISED OF PEOPLE WHO WOULDN'T ENJOY THIS MUSIC!!!
If you're a man that posts try not to laughs and reveal that your sense of humour and primary style of jokes is something that's racist or homophobic or misogynistic or targetting fat people - any minorities or group of people that face a lot of bullying...
You attract bullied; you attract what you put out into the world. Which in JJ's case, has been these insensitive mid-older teen boys that are also fans of racism, "dark humour", misogyny and these targetted jokes.
No-one (in his audience) likes his body. And it's depressing him, which feels so interesting to see. And his reaction (the sadness and crying over nobody liking his song) I've boiled down to being sourced from either one of three things.
a) Ego. Is he hurt because of his ego? Because he thought this'd be a good song, and he sees himself as some sort of impressive, incredible man - and seeing his song actively get memed as a whimsical little anime song hurt his ego? Because he feels as though he deserves respect and to be loved? b) Depression. Consider the Poppin' song released in lockdown; everyone online said it's shit. JJ could take it on the chest though, and could handle that feedback - smiling and laughing and content with knowing himself, that it was a good song - even if not everyone agreed. Here, JJ is so hurt by all the criticism. And that could be out of depression... After all, can you really be happy when the whole world seems to hate everything you do? I empathise - but I acknowledge that he's brought it all upon himself. All of his controversies are BUSINESS RELATED and caused by him wanting to manipulate his audience into buying his products, without caring about his fans. It's ruined his credibility, because people dislike him for it, and he gains a lot of negative responses for it. Everything negative we see and ourselves post online could very well be making JJ feel just truly hated. He might honestly just be depressed and in quite a vulnerable and raw state, whereby he can't handle the criticism because he's already so hurt he can't bounce back. It's like putting more and more weight on a broken bone; it won't recover and it's only getting worse. Is JJ so unenthused and flat in his reactions towards the criticisms towards the songs because of genuine depression? c) Marketing. The tough fact is that all these reactions and memes for his song gain media coverage and plays. Because this song is so shit that it's addictive. And JJ acting sad and playing into the fact that he doesn't like getting bullied does frankly make ppl run this joke even further, and mean that this song just spreads even further. For all we know, the sadness JJ shows in reactions to this song are literally all just an act meant to boost the song even further.
d) Manipulation. Issssssss JJ just manipulating you into feeling pity so that you start empathising n sympathising with him and brush his lunchly + poor-business-ethics-misdemeanours under the rug? Does he just want to manipulate you and evoke a sense of pity to rebuild a relationship and rust between you and "KSI", so that you'll forgive him for everything you condemned him for online? MAYBE!
I've just been analysing this guy in his reaction vids + online, and honestly, it's so interesting having a little contemplate between Biology and Chemistry and shitting Maths <3
Either ways, hope you enjoyed the big old psychiatric evaluation. Lmk your thoughts in the comments too my friends in the screen, ring, pen and king *blade swish noises*

How to Get More Twitch Channel Followers: Top Strategies for 2024
Twitch has become the go-to platform for live streaming, with millions of active streamers and viewers engaging in content every day. Whether you’re a gamer, musician, or content creator of any kind, growing your Twitch channel can be a challenging yet rewarding endeavor. If you're looking to increase your Twitch followers and expand your audience, this blog post will cover actionable strategies that will help you achieve that.
Consistent Streaming Schedule
One of the most important factors for growing your Twitch channel is consistency. If viewers know when you’ll be live, they’re more likely to tune in regularly.
Create a schedule: Set specific days and times for your streams and stick to them. Promote this schedule on your Twitch profile, social media, and any other platforms where your audience is active.
Stream frequently: While daily streaming isn’t always necessary, more frequent streams mean more chances for new viewers to find you.
Follow time zones: Make sure to consider the time zones of your target audience. Stream during peak hours when more potential followers are online.
Engage with Your Audience
Twitch is built on interaction. The more you engage with your audience, the more connected they’ll feel to your channel, increasing their likelihood of following and returning for future streams.
Chat with viewers: Always respond to comments and questions in chat. Make viewers feel welcomed by addressing them by name when possible.
Host Q&A sessions: Take time during your streams to have dedicated Q&A segments where viewers can ask you about anything related to the stream or your life.
Reward loyal viewers: Recognize your most active followers by calling them out or offering rewards like VIP badges or shoutouts. It helps foster community and encourages more engagement.
Use Eye-Catching Graphics and Overlays
Your Twitch stream’s visual presentation plays a crucial role in attracting new followers. High-quality overlays, alerts, and layouts give your stream a polished look, making it more appealing to viewers.
Custom overlays: Invest in or design overlays that reflect your channel's theme or personality. Make sure they're not too cluttered or distracting.
Alerts for new followers: Use alerts to celebrate new followers, donations, or subscribers. It’s a great way to show appreciation and encourage others to follow.
Webcam and stream quality: Ensure that your webcam and stream quality are sharp. Grainy or low-quality visuals can turn viewers away.
Collaborate with Other Streamers
Collaboration is an excellent way to introduce your channel to new audiences. Partnering with other Twitch streamers, especially those in your niche, can significantly boost your visibility.
Co-streaming: Play games or create content with other streamers to cross-promote each other’s channels. Co-streaming allows you to share audiences, benefiting both creators.
Shoutouts: Give shoutouts to other creators during your stream and encourage them to do the same for you.
Network: Engage in Twitch communities and Discord servers to network with fellow streamers and potential collaborators. Building relationships within the community can lead to meaningful partnerships.
Leverage Social Media for Promotion
Promoting your Twitch channel on platforms like Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok is essential for reaching new followers.
Create teaser content: Share clips or highlights from your Twitch streams on social media to entice viewers to check out your live content.
Post your schedule: Share your streaming schedule on all your social media channels, making it easy for people to know when you’re live.
Engage with your community: Stay active on social media by interacting with your followers. Ask for feedback, run polls, and respond to comments to build a sense of community across platforms.
Join and Engage with Twitch Communities
Twitch is home to various communities centered around specific games, genres, or hobbies. Joining these communities can help you connect with like-minded streamers and viewers.
Participate in Twitch Teams: Some streamers form Twitch Teams, which are groups of creators who collaborate and support each other. Joining a team can help increase your visibility and credibility on the platform.
Use Twitch Communities: You can also promote your streams in Twitch Communities or on community Reddit threads, provided you follow their promotion rules.
Chat in other streams: Be an active participant in other streamers’ chats. This helps build your name within the community, and viewers may check out your channel if they notice your involvement.
Provide Value and Entertainment
To gain and retain followers, you need to offer something unique. Whether it's gameplay skills, personality, humor, or expertise in a particular field, providing value to your audience keeps them coming back for more.
Find your niche: Whether it's a particular game, theme, or style of streaming, finding a niche will help differentiate your content from the sea of other streamers.
Create memorable moments: Entertain your audience with high-energy commentary, challenges, or special events like giveaways or milestone celebrations.
Educate: Some Twitch viewers are looking to learn—whether it’s gameplay strategies, how-tos, or tutorials. If you’re knowledgeable about something, use it to your advantage to draw in an audience.
Encourage Viewer Interaction with Bots and Commands
Twitch bots can enhance viewer engagement by adding fun and interactive features to your stream.
Use chatbots: Bots like Streamlabs or Nightbot can be set up to welcome new viewers, track loyalty points, or enable custom commands for viewers to engage with.
Loyalty rewards: Encourage viewers to return to your stream by offering rewards for followers who spend a lot of time watching your channel. These can include special privileges, VIP status, or custom emotes.
Run Twitch Giveaways
Hosting giveaways is an effective way to encourage viewers to follow your channel. Offer something valuable that’s relevant to your audience.
Set rules for followers: To enter the giveaway, viewers must follow your Twitch channel, which helps boost your follower count.
Promote your giveaway: Spread the word about your giveaway on social media and other platforms to attract new viewers to your stream.
Analyze Your Performance with Twitch Analytics
Twitch’s built-in analytics offer valuable insights into how your streams are performing, helping you fine-tune your strategies for attracting followers.
Check follower growth: Monitor your follower count over time to identify what types of content or strategies are working best.
Review peak times: Analyze when your streams get the most views and interactions, and adjust your schedule accordingly.
Engagement metrics: Look at how viewers are interacting with your stream—whether through chat, reactions, or follow-through on CTAs—and optimize based on these insights.
Conclusion
Building a following on Twitch takes time, consistency, and dedication. By engaging with your audience, promoting your channel across social media, collaborating with other streamers, and offering unique content, you can steadily grow your follower base. Remember to remain authentic and patient—over time, these strategies will help you increase your visibility and create a thriving Twitch community.
