Historical Fiction Recommendation

A bit of an unusual post, but I recently learned about the existence of the Desert Peach comic series created by Donna Barr and I need more people to know about it because it's a true gem. A big shoutout goes to @darksideoftwenty who introduced me to this comic, otherwise I may have never even knew that it existed!

To put it simple, the story is about Rommel's fictional gay younger brother called Pfirsich (sidenote, this is literally just the German word for peach and not actually used as a name, but it's still cute😅). He is the leader of a small support unit of the Afrika Korps, which consists mostly of people that are considered "misfits" in other parts of the army. The individual stories consist of all sorts of adventures and shenanigans but also have overarching plot points.

I think it's important to not let yourself fool by the potential first impression with this comic. At first glance, Pfirsich may seem like the absolute stereotype of the effeminate gay man, but there's actually so much more to him. This applies to the other characters too, as the story goes on and we get to know more about them, their personalities just become more and more well-rounded. At least since issue 3 I've been absolutely hooked.

For a comic that was written in the 80s and 90s, I was also extremely impressed how delicately it touches on and handles topics that are still relevant today, and manages to balance chaos and silliness with more serious and darker moments. Of course, not everything may be politically correct by today's standards and you should keep that in mind, but honestly I think there are pieces of media that are far more recent and still did things like this much worse.

The comic is available entirely for free on Webtoon, so if WW2 fiction is something you're into you should definitely give it a try. Apparently there was also a musical made back in the 90s that was based on the comics, but I could barely find anything related to it, I wish there existed recordings😭 Please note that although there aren't really depictions of sensitive content - injuries and (partial) nudity may occur but are usually quite simplified thanks to the art style - but due to the subject matter, it is targeted at adult audiences.

I'm currently at issue 18 and can't wait to continue reading! Here's just one small excerpt showing Pfirsich and Erwin (dancing together and I love how small it makes Erwin look xD), their brother relationship is hilarious and just absolutely adorable <3

Remember when I said I wanted Daisy in the movie verse to be made into a more "nutty" character?

Well I will rephrase that a bit. I don't want Daisy to be "nutty" per say (like Lola in modern Looney Tunes, or Dee in Philly) I want her to be more "wild", more "feral".

I want Daisy to be outspoken - like a cat that can scratch your eyes out if you wrong in any way. The type that is so free spirited and ungrounded that it intimidates others. She's the type to be ferocious if you get too close. And no one has ever been able to do that.

Except...a man in green.

The Cardinal Directions In Mario Games

So something I've noticed people do on maps is place something like the Koopa Kingdom to the West instead of East. I have argued that when you head right in the majority of Mario games like to Dry Dry Desert you are heading East. However, some people have argued and said we don't know if you are heading East or West and it could be any direction. So with some details from the games I've found out the cardinal directions.

First off in Super Mario Bros. 4 Super Mario World you there is a detail about the positioning of Yoshi's Island that can be found on the back of the Japanese box. "One peaceful day Mario Luigi and Peach set off on a vacation in the southern island Dinosaur Land Yoshi's Island." Info pulled from Japanese Mario World is VERY Different - Region Break Yoshi's Island is a Southern Island according to the Japanese Box and if you were to place compass on the map of Dinosaur Land in game this shows it matches up in game. I believe we can infer this with most games when it comes to the cardinal directions. However, I do have a piece of concrete information backing it all up.

In Super Mario Odyssey you have a compass on screen that shows you the cardinal directions. Peach's Castle in the Central Mushroom Kingdom area of the Grasslands is North when standing in front of it. To the East is the Desert like in every game when you head right.

Mario Princesses

I've been drawing lots of different Mario characters in my own style with my headcannons and I wanted to add the Princesses to the mixture. So here are me doodles

Peach is a Star Child, blessed by the stars able to pray to them for her wishes to coms true and more. Summoning stars down to aid her in battle, having the stars gift down power to her to smite enemies or Throw them across the continent. So I wanted to add a Star like feeling to her attire

Also she has the living umbrella bc yes

Rosalina is lowkey a goddess- or a demi goddess, so I wanted to make her attire more galaxy-ish. More magical, giving her a magical girl vibe. She got the Heelies 💅 she has a bit of weight to her but is happy with herself. Long braided hair, and she has a tatoo of a luma on her right shoulder

I really like the fannon takes of Daisy where she has muscle and kicks the shit out of people. She has more formal attire but would prefur to have her limbs be free-er. Skirt, flowing sleeves that are short too. Fancy punching gloves, she has on dance shoes with metal bottoms kinda like a tapping shoe but w more metal- short hair and tattoos of flowers bc she thinks theyre cool

It was just a little ficlet but I figured I might as well expand on that little post. Daniel/Marius are so fun together, they just have a really solid relationship and I love them being playful and joking around even while they're being intimate.
