Screaming. Princess Luna is beloved in fandom because she represents the outcasted and the societally rejected. She represented the unorthodox, as the princess of the night in a world that revolves around the day. She represents inner desires and feelings, as the guardian of dreams. She represents being true to yourself even if it’s scary or weird to others. She’s an icon to alienated and demonised minorities.

Even in the show, the parts of her that herself and most of the world considers to be the worst, there is always that one child that connects with it. Just like how we relate and reclaim the idea of monstrosity being cool, ponies too celebrate her in their nightmare night festivals, as a symbol of the unconventional.

If fanon is filled with the rejected and outcasted and misunderstood, for those that find love in what others call cringe, then it makes sense that Luna is a fandom favourite.

The malice, whole concerning, is not the focal point of the lack of noticing women on screen. The malice in these situations is people too thick to realise They're not noticing women's stories and getting mad at bad writing for not having women's stories bc they don't comprehend that They are the one with the problem. Not noticing women's stories and not getting mad at it is doing Exactly the same thing as the first group and just having a different secondary reaction. You're not better than group A.

If you can only notice women having emotions and personalities when they're furiously screaming and rageful and/or (exuberantly) traumatized (or crying their eyes out, but 13 doesn't even get close to that) then like sorry but You are the problem. There are many people who noticed 13's personality and quirks and neurosis and bad behaviour in season eleven, people who clocked her accurately enough to make accurate predictions of where this would go because everything you need is there on screen if you deign to look.

I think one thing about erivris that is so important is the fact they made the weight on their shoulders a game. And, in some ways, Vriska hunting with Eridan meant that the trolls she would have to kill for her lusus were probably going to die anyway. Eridan's orphaning meant his kismesis would stay alive, and Vriska could help keep all trolls in general alive with him. But also. Fundamentally. They were playacting. It gave them a way to connect and cope through their trauma together. And while I'm not sure how much Vriska ever had pitch feelings for Eridan outside that make believe context, I do believe it was incredibly meaningful to both of them.

ngl it makes me want to die a little bit that it's so often trans people who feel that sex is mutable but oppression is always-forever based on asab in ways that allow them to demand that information from other trans people. like it feels fucking bad. it feels bad when it's people holding up someone who posts a lot of selfies as transition goals to a degree they have to clarify what they have or haven't done or what "direction" they're going in, it feels worse when people are out there like "caster semenya is not tma" or whatever the fuck. i am, as always, not a trans woman, but here's a sentiment echoed by many of the trans women around me who log the fuck off, quoted directly from one: "people who draw a clear line where they say that semenya or khelif are tme and then call me tma are just calling me male at this point".

like i get it. i really do. we seek community and shared experiences, and we feel betrayed when people have less in common with us than we thought they did. [*more on this later.] but that's not those people's faults and my god in the case i'm seeing play out on twitter rn this poor person did absolutely nothing to intentionally mislead people, just posted pictures of their actual kid self. who looks a lot like i did, because shockingly enough "we can always tell" doesn't fucking work for trans people either!

on the one hand i move in intersex circles which are unapologetically welcoming in cis "dyadic" people with pcos, because it serves nobody to draw a clear line where mutilation or genetics or some ineffable childhood suffering are what make somebody intersex, especially when most of us (esp in places like nz) have never been karyotyped and are being treated for symptoms without a pinned-down cause anyway. the more of us there are the stronger we are, the more pressure we can exert on a medical profession which doesn't like to consider how common outliers are, how uneasy sex is at all. and then on the other hand there's dyadic trans people on the internet who've yelled me out of spaces because a couple of traumatised incarcerated trans women i worked with as a prison abolitionist assumed i was also a trans woman and i didn't immediately tell them my entire csa-involved history of being sexed in varying ways as an infant and child and/or exactly how big my phallus was at birth or where in my junk config my urethra lives so they could decide i was tme or whatever.

returning to the * for a related but not identical thought: i think presuming shared experiences leads to some fucked shit in general! "oh we all had a radfem phase" or "oh we all were channers" no we fucking weren't and it's particularly obnoxious when me & mine are trying to build trans community locally to organise and resist the growing wave of far-right backlash against our existence, and there's just white people in there on a spectrum from "straight up being antisemitic and trying to get the n-word pass" through "handwringing about how they need to make space for people who aren't politically correct" to "handwringing about how brown people are right to be mad at them but doing shit fuckall". and then the other fucking brown people in the space are on some identity politics shit where they're like "trans joy inherently excludes those of us who could get deported" or "big city white queers are killing us by being visible instead of going stealth bc it stirs up the discourse" or whatever the fuck i've heard pulled out this year. there's a bunch of reasons i primarily organise outside of trans spaces and that's one of them. i've never felt more alone in spaces where people claim we're all the same than being left as the brownest moderator or organiser in a space full of people to whom "this is a safe trans space" apparently means they get to abdicate all other responsibilities not to lapse into presumed shared patterns that are fucking racist or otherwise alienating. i've never felt more alone than surrounded by exclusively trans people who sort people into boxes and assume everyone in those boxes has the transition goals they have. like i was on cypro until it disagreed with me to the point of endocrine crisis and now i'm on t and at both those points people were so fucking presumptive or entitled to my reasons or journey or personal relationship w my body

literally just submitted on (and was invited to consult on) the nz law commission's review of the human rights act and like. it's straight up fucked how many nz trans people fully do not comprehend that any "sex assigned at birth" type definitions fundamentally exclude migrants who have no way of proving it and many intersex people who happen to have been reassigned later or many times or never assigned at all as a baby. we can't make law with this shit and that's why we have to have symmetrical protections for all genders/sexes/expressions/presentations, bc naming and defining a protected class here often leaves the people who already are left out from those shared experiences of marginalisation out in the cold when they face violence

Backstory

(abridged)

Auri is a bastard child born to Publius Calvisius Ruso, a Roman senator, and Livilla Bassa Drusus. By Roman naming conventions, she was named for her mother, as her father wanted nothing more to do with either of them. Her childhood was fairly normal as far as things go, until she turned 15 and was bitten by a vampire. She doesn’t remember exactly what happened, or even who did it, just that it was someone she trusted who took advantage of her. It made her incredibly jaded and she almost never opens up to anyone anymore. As a result of the bite, she was cursed to what was supposed to be an eternal sleep. Because of where she was at the time of the bite, she ended up buried beneath the rubble of Vesuvius until 1860, when something or someone broke her curse.

Upon awakening she was pseudo-adopted by a visiting British researcher (and wizard), who helped her adapt to the modern world, taught her English, discovered her magical ability, and treated her very much as a daughter until he mysteriously died in 1887. Auri is determined to find out what happened to him, and by extension, to her, as she firmly believes whoever was responsible for his death was the same person or creature who turned her.

In 1890 she got a Hogwarts letter, as her magical ability was finally powerful and developed enough for the book of admissions to let her in. Much of her story in that time follows the canon of the game.

She ages much slower than a human, and although she is immortal as a vampire she will continue to age until she is the human equivalent of 20. By the end of the game canon she has finally aged to the human equivalent of 16, after having spent almost 30 years as the mental and physical age of 15, despite having technically lived over 1000 years. (side note, during her period of cursed sleep she did not age at all.)

After both her adoptive father figure and Professor Fig died, Auri snapped. She’s been struggling still to adjust to living in a world she was never meant to live to see, she’s lost everyone she ever loved, and still has no answers as to why this happened to her. She completely abandons her moral compass in a desperate hunt for any kind of reason, and is not above killing those who stand in her path. Driven partially mad by grief, she hardly lets anyone get close to her, paranoid that they too will die and leave her alone.

I'm not sure if Rayla will ever feel like part of her family again after she gets her parents and Runaan out of the coins. She still loves them, but it was also a long time. She has been through a series of traumas and carries the consequences with her. Her parents are still the ones who abandoned her when she was little. Runaan basically disowned her in a way the moment she chose the option of peace over the mission. And Ethari? He ghosted her even though she was all he had left.

She was alone for so long.

Annie Cresta

There's not that much info about Annie, and not from Annie herself ... Which made her lots of fun to draw, just to figure her out.

On the left she's in her wedding dress which she got from Katniss. We know that it's green and has a very specific embroidery that makes it uniquely one of Cinna's works.... And wow, did I give it my all with the embroidery. (Never again!) It now has a very vintage flair to it which I think would have appealed to Annie.

In the middle, it's what I imagine her to wear during her Victor's Crowning ... if she even made it that far. Maybe she would still be in shock for a while until she was breaking down during her interview with Caesar? That's how everyone would know about her mental state after the Games. I imagine she would be forced to wear something sexy and very distinct for District 4 so it's mostly blue. The cape is a reminiscent of waves and a sea shell.

The upper right would be her after being freed and bright to District 13. She was described as "lovely, but bedraggled".
