man I just read about the Helen Keller Plagiarism Incident

(long story short, 11 year old Helen wrote a short story as a birthday gift to a beloved mentor at Perkins School for the Blind, he published it, turns out it was very similar to a previously published story, they put poor Helen on blast for it and she lost her mentor's friendship and had to leave Perkins)

and I cannot believe the nerve. A little eleven year old girl writes a story to a trusted adult, HE makes the decision to publish it, and the child and Annie Sullivan are questioned and punished??? Disgraceful.

It's apparently also the reason Helen Keller never tried writing fiction again which is a damn shame. Not only is it bad to crush any child's fledgling creativity, but she also had such a unique perspective on the world. I think her contributions would have been very valuable and engrossing.

#the article described helen being taken into a room and questioned FOR HOURS about whether she had read the story or whether somone had read #it to her.#and people were accusing Annie Sullivan of being a fraud and of Helen being basically a mindless parrot which as you can imagine was deeply #upsetting to them both.#absolutely shameful behavior.#mark Twain wrote a letter to helen about it and he said in essence 'there are no original ideas drawn whole cloth and without inspiration #from other ideas' which is also very true #whole situation absolutely slaps of misogyny and ableism #like for real the MALE teacher published Helens story and yet apparently gets the LEAST flak????#she was a little girl!!! and if she did read the story taking inspiration from a story you forgot you read is not such a terrible sin!!!#she was ELEVEN

Man I don’t know if any official Doctor Who artists know Doctor Who like Alice X. Zhang knows Doctor Who. Like lots of people are technically skilled but hot damn Alice X. Zhang always understands the assignment.
