anyway, if you want to listen to an audiodrama version of dorian gray that amps up the gay power level to well over 9000, shadows at the door is here for you

HELLOOOOOOO MY DARLING FELLOW ADORERS OF SPOOKY AUDIOFICTION
Hello hi it's me I'm back on my bullshit! Remember a while back I talked a lot about how fantastic the podcast Shadows at the Door is? They're still amazing, they're in the middle of producing season 3, and they are working on a WHOLE-ASS MUSICAL.
As in, multiple songs, a fantastic cast, amazingly talented people writing and producing it, it's going to be phenomenal.
Fan of shows like Re: Dracula? David Ault (Re Drac's very own Friend Arthur!) voices the protagonist, beloved fan favourite Doctor Geoffrey Troughton.
Professor Elemental (Fighting Trousers, anyone?) is writing several songs and voicing the production's deeply creepy antagonist.
Did you like The Silt Verses or The Secret of St Kilda? Shadows has got Erika Sanderson and Michelle Kelly on the cast, as well as a slew of other phenomenally talented voice actors.
Please check out the production's kickstarter page for more details about this beastie, and if you're interested and can spare a few bucks to help get it off the ground, please consider doing so! Shadows is well-made queer media created by hugely talented queer people and will more than meet expectations if they can meet their funding goals.
THANK YOU I LOVE YOU MUAH

Hey Dracula fans! How do you feel about…musicals?
Tumblr media
Earworm is a ghostly audio drama musical, coming to you from the minds behind Shadows at the Door, namely Mark Nixon. Shadows at the Door is fantastic, by the way.
What’s it about?
From their website: “Geoffrey Troughton can’t sleep. Music bleeds through the walls at all hours interrupting his paranormal studies. But something has crawled its way from the other side, a sinister earworm eager to sink its hook into the right host. As Geoffrey’s weary yet curious mind is hoisted into the darkness, will he surface from the shadows? Or will he be cursed to play second fiddle within his own soul? …And who will be next?”
Hey, that sounds FANTASTIC.
Why does Re: Dracula care?
Because we love audio drama, we love musicals, and we share some actors! David Ault, our very own Arthur Holmwood, will be starring, along with Erika Sanderson and several other talents.
When can I listen?
Well first they have to finish their crowdfund! This is an all-or-nothing campaign, the show doesn’t happen without full funding, so if you can, toss them some cash! I’m personally pretty 👀 about those stretch goals.
Support our friends at Earworm!

do YOU like horror podcasts? do you like your horror podcasts queer? have you ever thought, I love this horror podcast, it'd be so cool if it had a musical episode?
Shadows at the Door is one of the best horror podcasts around, made by just the loveliest people - and they're currently crowdfunding for their musical episode, Earworm.
You can listen to the whole show right now, for free, in your podcatcher of choice. Meet Earworm's protagonist, sceptic Professor Troughton, in episode one, and listen on for the most distressing museum audio tour, a scheme against the Mona Lisa, a pair of video games podcasters making their worst last episode, and much more, including, one day soon, mothman. If you like what you hear, please consider supporting Earworm here.

Earworm - a ghostly audio drama musical
The Kickstarter for EARWORM is live!
A ghostly audio drama musical from Shadows at the Door featuring rap, hip hop, jazz and musical theatre, with the voice talents of David Ault, Professor Elemental, Ilana Charnelle, Erika Sanderson, Michelle Kelly, and Mark Nixon, with music by Tom Caruana.
Geoffrey Troughton can’t sleep. …And who will be next?

The late (BST) Audiodrama Sunday
I have had a Woe.Begone hyperfocus for some time and I am only just now listening to other stuff!
Finally finished How it Ends after dipping in and out of it over several years - I was not expecting that ending! I guess the clue was in the name.
Caught up on the Hallowoods. I like this format of main story bookended by Jimmy Yamaguchi being unsettling and MAROLMAR CONTINUING TO FILL ME WITH THE WHITE HOT RAGE OF A THOUSAND SUNS. Nikignik darling you can do so much better. Although I realise your dating pool is limited… sorry babes.
Binged all of How I Died, which manages to neatly combine mystery, horror, ghosts and sci-fi with some engaging and sympathetic characters and cool twists.
Late to the Margaret's Garden party (don't tell my friends). Somehow it managed to be both beautiful and kind of.. wacky? Anyway I love Pasha.
Midst…wow, it really is everything people said it was. The story was fun, and touching, and amazing worldbuilding, but as with so many shows it was the music that made it for me. I cannot wax lyrical enough about the music. Just these amazing expansive synthwave soundscapes, like something out of Bladerunner.
Now, for some CROWDFUNDERS:
Do you like musicals? Do you like spooky stories that are kinda gay (of course you do this is tumblr)? Do you like pith-helmet sporting chap hop legend Professor Elemental? Well these three great tastes could be combined into a sort of weird spooky gay musical soup if you help Mark and David fund Earworm. Make David Ault sing more songs than me and Travis Vengroff put together by supporting the crowdfunder: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/330261639/earworm-a-ghostly-audio-drama-musical Do you like goblins? Do you like the Lads Meredith? Do you like the Lads Meredith playing goblins? Do you like specific local folklore cryptids that dwell in West Sussex bodies of water? Do you like hearing Amy Dickinson finally attaining her true form as a surprisingly tall vengeful and chaotic ghost? Do you want to see Ben Meredith toss his leonine locks like a L'Oreal Advert (Can confirm having seen it live, it's very flowy). OK that last one you can just watch this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8SRWi7ZTKbE) but for everything else there's the G.O.B.L.I.N.S crowdfunder:

Here are my completely honest thoughts on a bunch of audio dramas I've checked out. (Don't worry, nothing scathing, they're all reasonably good. But please proceed with caution, or don't proceed, if you're involved in creating any of these shows.)
In the order I first listened:
The Storage Papers: Nine episodes in. A little slow paced, but I've heard it picks up in the later seasons. My only real concern is that it seems like a lot of the horror revolves around "this thing looks sort of like a human but it's Wrong somehow. also it kills people (or cats)." I hope at some point we meet a creature that looks and acts as unsettling as the Grinner but is nice, or at least complicated.
The Cellar Letters: Seven episodes in. I LOVE it. I love the natural-feeling messiness of it, the way Nate and Steve talk in circles and go back and forth on what to believe. It's made me laugh out loud multiple times. I can't wait to learn more about that weird little room full of letters with that one random word written on the wall (I forget what).
400 Words a Horror: Three episodes in. I had to re-listen to the first episode because I hadn't been paying enough attention, but I think that particular episode rewards re-listening anyway. Also it is the only show on this list that genuinely frightens me so I have to pace myself. Very good.
Tin Can Audio Presents: Middle:Below: Two episodes in. I won't say I'm hooked, but I am somewhat interested. It's a lot more relaxing than the other podcasts on this list, so I keep thinking I'll save it for listening closer to bedtime, then not getting around to it.
The Grotto: Six episodes in. Very much enjoying. I was SO proud of myself for correctly guessing the twist in the second episode. I love the characters and am extremely intrigued by the mysteries. My only criticism is that the musical interludes drag on too long. And I'm saying that as a WOE.BEGONE fan.
Soul Operator: Three episodes in. It's good but there isn't any particular element that's drawing me in just yet. There's a lot I don't know about the world yet, though, so there is still plenty of time for me to fall in love with this show. (Irrelevant note: I always get "Smooth Operator" by Sade stuck in my head when I think about this show.)
Shadows at the Door: Listened to half of the first episode. It was somewhat interesting, but I decided I had higher priorities for my listening time than disconnected hour-long episodes that are only *somewhat* interesting.
Archive 81: Five episodes in. Quite possibly going to become a major obsession. It's got everything: playing with point of view; the Power of Storytelling but in a menacing way; vivid character voices; probably a cult. I particularly love the way conversations play out on this show--I don't know exactly how to explain it but there's a certain... friction that happens in real conversations but rarely in fictional ones outside cringe comedy. I don't usually enjoy that sort of thing when it's played for laughs, but for realism or suspense? I eat that up. It does make me a little tense so this is another show I pace myself with and I'm glad the episodes are short.
Alice Isn't Dead: Two episodes in. I'm not going to make it a priority--it's got a similar sort of surrealism to Night Vale, but with higher stakes and less humor, and I had enough trouble getting immersed in Night Vale. I could probably enjoy it if I gave it enough time, but for now I'd rather focus on *gestures at some of the shows above*
The Silt Verses: Listened to the first ten minutes of the first episode and got bored, which I think says as much about me as it does about the show. It does get off to a bit of a slow start and leaves more space between lines of dialogue than most of these shows do, but I could probably get into it with adequate time and sleep. Not prioritizing it, for similar reasons to Alice.

Being ace, I'm used to not seeing myself represented in media with the wonderful exception of audio dramas/podcasts as it seems to be the one media ace characters thrive. Not only do I finally see myself but seeing different aspects of being ace covered under shows still amazes me
Seeing Jonathan Sims being in a loving relationship with another man (and also had a gf preshow) in The Magnus Archives
Listening to Prof Troughton talk about not feeling pride not having been with anyone so he dove into his career in Shadows At The Door
For Walter Pensive to not fully understand what being asexual means but figures that's what he is after Riot tells him the term in Hello From The Hallowoods
Rudyard Funn just being like of course isn't everyone because to him it makes perfect sense in Wooden Overcoats (even if he doesn't know the term asexual as confirmed by DKB)
For Red, who even fathered a child, to always be like, hey that's awesome you like stuff like that, just not for me in Dice Shame
Zolf TELLING Wilde he is his reason and Ben and Alex stating Z/W are queer platonic partners in a relationship and that though it's never said by the characters in the campaign, they love each other.
I know this isn't all ace characters in podcasts but these are the ones that radiate with me. Ace-spec is an umbrella and it's wonderful to see many different versions

So Re: Dracula ended and has left a horror-themed-audiofiction-shaped hole in your life? Please allow me to recommend Shadows At The Door as your next listen! Some reasons you may be interested:
David Ault (Judge Moneybags, aka Lord Arthur Godalming) is, for the first couple of seasons, almost literally the entire cast. There are jokes about it. So many jokes. I think there are even T-shirts.
Karim Kronfli- you know, that Dracula dude? Is also a recurring VA, including for SatD's PHENOMENAL dramatisation of The Picture of Dorian Gray.
Rahul Motherfucking Kohli - also a VA for SatD! Believe me when I say I screamed like a little girl and replayed the episode four times in a day.
Ever listened to The Magnus Archives? Did you like their sound design? Nico does the score for SatD as well and it's BREATHTAKING.
Jamie Flanagan wrote the script for an episode in the current season. Yes, THAT Jamie Flanagan. The Haunting of Bly Manor, Midnight Mass, The Fall of the House Of Usher, Jamie Flanagan. You're welcome.
Two podcasts in one! Each episode features not just the horror fiction, but a post-episode discussion that is every bit as entertaining as the stories themselves. Mark Nixon (the showrunner) and David (Ault, yes), occasionally joined by VAs or writers, chat together thoughtfully, irreverently, frequently filthily, always entertainingly, sometimes even about the episode itself, lol (digressions are frequent, and frequently hilarious).
Drunk. Ghost. Stories. Trust me. TRUST ME.
The sound design is exquisite. Mark has a fantastically talented ear for effective and atmospheric foley and a flawless editor's touch.
An engaging blend of classic stories and new authors.
QUEER REP IN QUEER MEDIA MADE BY QUEER PEOPLE!!!!
Genuinely, Shadows at the Door is one of my favourite podcasts, full stop, and I cannot recommend it highly enough. It's just *so damn good*. Please consider giving it a listen!

Troughton for scale.
Does this look like a man called Geoffrey? Idk I never met a guy called Geoffrey.
[ID: a digital drawing of Professor Troughton from Shadows at the door, drawn in a very simple, chibi style. He's a white man with short dark hair with grey streaks and oval glasses. He's wearing a dark sweater vest and trousers. /End ID]

Horrorcon UK
Ok, so a little rather late for an Audio Drama Sunday post, but I wanted to share what an epic weekend we had at Horrorcon UK in Sheffield 11-12th May.
Myself, Daivd Ault and James Cleveland (all from The NoSleep Podcast) were there promoting "Horror in Audio Fiction", trying to get more people to discover audio drama and fiction through podcasts, and not assuming all podcasts were two blokes talking about stuff into a mic.
Having worked on over a 100 shows between us, (with a lot of horror), it became a game of "Tell us what kind of horror you like, and we'll recommend a show for you to listen to".
From the big anthology shows like NoSleep, and the very British and queer Shadows at the the Door, we kept finding more shows to talk about and add to an ever-growing flow chart.
Shows we were flag waving for included:
The NoSleep Podcast Shadows at the Door @re-dracula @thekilda @woebegonepod Dark Dice Red Odyssey Audible Visions Drama Creepy Campfire Radio Theatre The Wicked Library Victoria's Lift The Dead @lessismorguepod The Hidden Frequencies
And it wasn't just horror! We gave shoutouts to @camlannpod and the sci-fi series Cyclone as well!
In all, a wonderful weekend introducing people to the incredible world of audio drama and fiction.
