comics as an art form make me insane. they’re so difficult to do well. there’s so many different ways to make sequential art work and most of them are deeply unintuitive. onomatopoeia that feels completely ridiculous to put down often reads seamlessly. panels on a page become a fractally nested image composition challenge that’s only possible to lose because if you do a good job no one will notice. you have to direct the readers’ eyes on a specific path across the page but also account for the fact that they won’t follow it. comic time isn’t linear. if the order of events isn’t crystal clear the story becomes incomprehensible. sometimes you need to do this on purpose. all this for a medium almost universally considered less effective than animation and less respectable than plain text. even its own name doesn’t take it seriously

#don’t mind me just chewing on drywall #some of the absolute best comics don’t look remotely impressive until you try to make one yourself #and some absolutely beautiful panel layouts and art combine to make a stunning visual that barely manages to get any meaning across #you have to emulate cinematography by cultural necessity at this point #but if you lean too hard in that direction your comics just become Worse Movies #there’s barely any standard practices for anything because people are just barely starting to look at comics seriously #mumbling

I don't get how critters aren't constantly on their hands and knees praying and giving tribute to Creative Director Marisha Ray daily, in fact I don't get how all of the constant hate she gets doesn't get immediately ratioed; the live shows the sets the production has jumped and improved to a level that is theatre stage quality and elevated the entirety of the show with it and while I understand there are a lot of talented artists are behind it, its marisha's vision that is constantly keeping shit in line and you can SEE it. wherever there is fun, magic, mystery and whimsy I always see her hand behind it. she deserves the world

#her getting constant hate is definitely a sexism thing that can't be fixed by just talking about it #but its seriously so impressive to me how HARD she goes. i love how in the first two seasons of doctor who, Mickey Smith, regular human guy who i am led to believe works as a car mechanic, has absolutely unparalleled hacking skills just whenever the plot requires it. first time it happened it was bc the doctor gave him the top secret UNIT password that lets any random dickhead with a laptop fire a missile out of a submarine directly at london. but all on his own he's casually clicked his way into high security military databases at least twice since then. if you were a character on a tv show in the 2000s, just knowing how to turn a computer on was enough to give you hacker superpowers.

#dw #what do you mean 'mickey the idiot'. can you keep it down back there he's trying to hack army records of ufo activity #i remember 2006 and the computer for me was a magical portal that allowed me to very slowly load neopets webpages #i am taking the implications of this plot contrivance 100% seriously btw #mickey is a computer programming prodigy and nobody realises it #bc he only hangs out with his girlfriend and his girlfriend's mum (don't know enough about computers to realise this is impressive)#and his girlfriend's weird alien boyfriend (probably used to hack high security websites as a prank in preschool)#jack has spent enough time in the 21st century that he MIGHT have the context to realise mickey's unusually good with computers #but it just never came up when they were hanging out :/

#kingdom hearts #kh1 #hollow bastion #scenery #my gif #creating this set helped me truly appreciate just how detailed this world is #i mean i always knew it was beautiful but i never actually slowed down long enough to REALLY look at it #seriously every single room is so varied and intricately designed it's so impressive #it was difficult to select only eight locations to showcase because this place is huge and each area is so memorable in its own way #i technically used two shots from the lift stops but c'mon i wasn't going to leave out those giant stained glass windows are you kidding me #they look amazing but can be easily missed since they're so high up #this world is so dark and moody with its elaborate architecture despite its soft peach toned skybox that's surprisingly calming to look at #she has the range
