Dr Tenma immediately after a mental breakdown wandering the streets of Shibuya/Metro city. Still drunk, sleep deprived and trying to fight back the immeasurable agony he feels by trying to double down and suppress all his emotions forever coded song.
"What are you talking about though? Is he bitter about losing his job and importance, watching everyone forget about him? Feeling guilt over selling Atom or driving Ochanomizu out of his life? Grieving Tobio and Hoshie?"
Yeah it can be all those.

Hidden Histories: Kyu Sakamoto, the last Asian soloist to reach No.1 on Billboard Hot 100 in 1963
We only had to wait 60 years for someone else from the region to reach the top spot.
"Ue o Muite Arukō" was written by lyricist Rokusuke Ei and composer Hachidai Nakamura. The song is kind of a bitter sweet metaphor for the emerging post World War II global expansion of Japan onto the world scene. Ei wrote the lyrics while walking home from participating in the 1960 Anpo protests against the U.S.-Japan Security Treaty, expressing his frustration and dejection at the failed efforts to stop the treaty.

In the West, it is best known as "Sukiyaki", the name of a Japanese hot-pot dish. The word has nothing to do with the song and was used because it was short, catchy and familiar to English speakers. A Newsweek columnist compared this to issuing "Moon River" in Japan under the title "Beef Stew".

Shawn Sage and Kyu Sakamoto
Shawn Sage is one of the few musicians I actually known. I first met him when he worked tables at the defunct Renaissance Cafe. I didn’t realize he was a musician until a week or so later when he did a set at one of many shows at the Cafe. So his cd ‘One Of The Good Guys’ is more than great music but also full of fine memories. His ‘She Don’t Want My Eyes on Her’ is one of the best country songs…

Billy Vaughn - Kyu Sakamoto - Sukiyaki
youtube
Area around Himeji Castle at cherry blossom time
Comment: One of my uncles worked for years as a civilian employee for a US military garrison in Mannheim, Germany. He even lived in a US barracks for a while and loved big band music, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Co. He not only gave me my first Beatles record - but also opened the door to this music for me as well. I liked listening to “Sukiyaki” played by the Billy Vaughn Orchestra - but it is originally a song (“Ue O Muite Arukou”) by Japanese singer Kyu Sakamoto. Since the actual title was hard to pronounce for Western tongues, it was renamed “Sukiyaki” (the name of a Japanese stew dish). The song grew to become one of the world's best-selling singles of all time, selling over 13 million copies worldwide.
The lyrics of the song give the impression of a sad love ballad - but the song has a “political background” that was mostly unknown to non-Japanese listeners: Rokusuke Ei wrote the song after attending a student protest against the US military presence in Japan that continued after World War II in the early 60ties. The text expresses frustration, but at the same time hope for a better future. Japanese communication is more „indirect“ - they often do not say directly what they think to maintain harmony, to prevent a loss of face or just to be polite. It is the principle of „Honne“ (what you really think) and „Tatemae“ (the mask you show in public):
„The first face, you show to the world. The second face, you show to your close friends, and your family. The third face, you never show anyone.“

EASIER SAID THAN DONE
EASIER SAID THAN DONE, One Hit Wonders, 1963. #Sukiyaki #More #Oldies
One Hit Wonders, 1963 Edition, by Rich Paschall When a group finally breaks through with a hit song, they may believe that hit songs will just continue to follow. Soon, however, they may find out that it is easier said than done. Even talented singers may never again reach the Top 40 on the Billboard charts. Here are my favorite “One hit wonders” from 1963. A few of these artists had successful…
