31st August 2024: Sea aster, Peregrine which it was exciting to see, views, Black-tailed Godwits, Dunlin and star bird today Little Stint I got some of my best ever views of this striking arctic looking wader one of my birds of the year, marsh mallow and young Shelduck on an amazing afternoon at Pennington.

Curlew Sandpiper, Spoonbills, Snipe, Avocet, Redshank, Lapwing, Oystercatcher, Ringed Plover, Pied Wagtail, Marsh Harrier, the first golden samphire I ever recall seeing a gorgeous plant, rock samphire, soapwort, bramble flower and blackberries, bindweed, teasel seed heads and rose hips were other highlights today with Woodpigeon and colourful scenes of Goldfinches on in flower buddleia at home.

this valentine’s day i would like to profess my undying, ardent love for the callistephus chinensis (china aster)! the flower that contributed to me giving myself my name!!

not only are they a part of the (superior in my opinion) family of asteraceae, but also the genus’ (callistephus) etymology is derived from the greek words “kalli-” meaning “beautiful” and “stephos” meaning crown. they have beautiful chrysanthemum-esque blooms and come in all sorts of colours (my favourites being purple and white).

straying away from taxonomy a bit, asters in general are one of the birth flowers for september (my birth month!). they symbolise hope, faith and wisdom. and according to greek mythology, astraea (“star maiden”: goddess of purity, justice and innocence) cried because there weren't enough stars in the sky and when her tears hit the earth, they caused asters to bloom! continuing to follow the greek myth, she was the last goddess to live amongst the humans after the golden age, symbolising the decline of hope for humanity along with the decline of the ages. she left and became the constellation virgo i believe!

some more fun fun facts, asters have a most frequently observed number of n = 9 haploid chromosomes (2n = 18 for diploid). the numerology of the word “aster” also happens to be nine and guess what! september is the 9th month of the year! is it obvious i really like the number 9? almost as much as i love asters <3

gifs and stimboards for palestine! 🇵🇸

hello everyone! in order to encourage donations to palestinian fundraisers, i'm taking requests for gifs and stimboards in exchange for proof of donation to any palestinian fundraiser or charity!

i usually make gifs of birds, but i can also do other animal species, or something else entirely. you can see gifs i've made here, and stimboards here!

you can get one original gif per 1 USD donated, one regular (3x3) stimboard per 5 USD donated, and/or one large (3x5) stimboard per 10 USD donated. requests can be made through DMs or asks.

feel free to mix and match these options, especially for large donations. for example, a request with a $50 donation could be 20 flamingo gifs, 15 white-throated sparrow gifs, a large rainbow fidget themed stimboard, and a regular deer themed stimboard.

depending on how many requests i get, i aim to have each request completed within a week of receiving it. however, the next few weeks are going to be hectic since i'm about to go to college, so please be patient with me.

the characterization of the goddesses from the brief glimpses we Have of them is so so so interesting to me.

aster's temple establishes her as pretty strict, what with smiting anyone who enters who has done wrong. in the same way that you might expect, RAFT, or at least the ferin family, seem very heavily tied to her, given the dreams that jay has (and drey and jayson, given how their eyes are also changed in a similar way. it's pretty safe to assume this is something that's common in the ferin bloodline).

the navy is very pro-structure, pro-government, etc, pushing for an agenda essentially under their watch, which line up pretty nicely with how the temple is structured. yet her answers to gillion about the pin, while lacking in any real tone due to the nature of the communication, feel open or in some ways hesitant (this is more specifically about the "not really" answer to the chosen one question).

in addition, the dreams jay has are about withstanding the heat, being strong enough to tough it out and find the freedom on the other side. the sun is something guiding and also that light. it's something hidden away from those in the undersea, something that draws them out and has them realize this is what the elders had been hiding from them? it's a source of warmth, comfort, familiarity, and yet it's orderly.
