I often think about this one time where I posted a video about Peter Parker having ADHD and someone commented:

"He can't have ADHD! He's too smart!"

Girl, what in the ableism is that-

i really feel like we don’t discuss enough just how deep jkr’s white supremacy goes

like it’s way more than just:

cho chang’s name

almost every black character being tall and sporty

kingley’s name

the goblins

the house elves

the only south asian thing about the patil twins being their names

there’s way more but those are the talking points that are usually discussed in the white supremacy context of jkr’s bigotry.

but there’s something else that i find to be particularly insidious which i don’t see that many conversations about.

so for context when i did my a level i had had to research late 19th century pseudoscience because i was studying gothic literature. and i came across things like phrenology and the criminal mind and honestly it feels like jkr discovered these theories and just ran with them.

as a quick explanation phrenology is the theory that by studying the shape of someone’s skull you can see if they’re predisposed to criminality and lombroso’s criminal mind is the theory that criminality is hereditary and you can tell by observing someone’s physical features. it’s also the general consensus in both these theories that someone with physical ‘defects’ or deformities’ will be predisposed to criminality which also makes them incredibly ableist.

both are incredibly eugenicist and white supremacist theories because they’re essentially saying that you can tell if someone is inherently good or bad and thereby whether they deserve to be alive/within society/treated as equals by looking at their physical features.

they are both complete bullshit pseudoscience with no real basis in fact.

now where this comes into hp and jkr is that the antagonists and the villains of the series are disproportionately described as having these very negative physical characteristics.

like the very obvious one is voldemort with no nose and being snakelike.

but also the way peter pettigrew is described.

“His thin, colourless hair was unkempt and there was a large bald patch on top. He had the shrunken appearance of a plump man who had lost a lot of weight in a short time. His skin looked grubby, almost like Scabbers’s fur, and something of the rat lingered around his pointed nose, his very small, watery eyes.” (poa ch 19)

like the man is literally being compared to an animal (yes i know it’s implied in the lore that the longer one stays in their animagus form the more traits they take on but the point still stands).

then there’s marcus flint who as far as i remember is literally just a minor antagonist.

“Marcus Flint was even larger than Wood. He had a look of trollish cunning on his face as he replied” (cos ch 7)

like she really has a thing for comparing people to animals which is a very common tool in white supremacy for dehumanising people.

and then there’s greyback

“a big, rangy man with matted grey hair and whiskers, whose black Death Eater’s robes looked uncomfortably tight. He had a voice like none that Harry had ever heard: a rasping bark of a voice. Harry could smell a powerful mixture of dirt, sweat and, unmistakeably, of blood coming from him. His filthy hands had long yellowish nails.” (hbp ch 27)

now admittedly it’s slightly different with greyback since jkr is very openly saying in the narrative that he’s less than human and too dangerous for society because jkr only believes in equality for muggleborns and no one else.

but as is stands there are so many examples some big some small of the physical descriptions of villains and antagonists having negative connotations. the reason that it’s so insidious is because this is a children’s book series. and children soak up information like sponges including the implication that the further you are from the beauty standards the worse of a person you are (something that is reinforced by society). then when you place that in the context of the west where hp is most popular then it becomes the further away you are from whiteness (the western beauty standard) the worse of a person you are.

it seems like a really small thing which is why i don’t think it gets discussed nearly as much as the more overt things but even the small pebbles can have large ripple effects. besides i think think it’s incredibly important to discuss every aspect of jkr’s bigotry.

I am literally disabled because of my learning disabilities, I have faced literal descrimnation because of it.

everytime you call us retarded or a retard you are ACTIVLY upholding the systems in which I am trapped in.

I take more offence in being called a retard than anything due to the literal DECADES of systematic abuse and descrimnation from the medical system, every single government resource, and almost all school alternatives.

Accommodating to myself when others aren't accommodating (part 1?? might talk more about this later??)

Okay, so. YA'LL- let me yap for a second cuz Im very excited about this era of my life hehe-

So I go to a kinda stuffy, small school where we're not allowed to have our phones out (like, at all ) during the school day and even though Im a senior and am allowed to use my laptop and stuff during study halls, it's just not portable enough.

Not only that, but I have pretty...intense... parents (I have support from my therapist and I'm safe. dw.) who are pretty quick to take my devices a lot and if I'm spiraling a don't have a distraction to calm down, it leads to....unhealthy coping mechanisms. And while, I do have an Alexa and a CD player, I dont wanna plug headphones in a sit right next to the wall. Or if I need to go to the bathroom and be alone, I can't bring something that plugs into the wall cuz then my parents will be all weird. ANYWAYS-

I had found this walkman that I had gotten a couple years back after my mom's old one that I used to use broke. I thought that this new one had broken but it actually works!!

And I had just bought a Wicked movie CD and a Be More Chill CD so I was real excited.

(Excuse me switching verb tenses every five seconds lmao)

ANYWAYS-

I just bought some blank CDs for burning that are coming soon and I CD burner/DVD player for my computer and Im SO EXCITED cuz I can do so many cool stuff with these things hehehe

Cool stuff include:

-Burning Black Suits the Musical songs onto a CD and having my own Black Suits Album!!!

-Be able to watch my dvds of the Beetlejuice Cartoon Series in the privacy of my room with my computer ( I am a bedroom child and not a living room child. See previously mentioned "intense parents")

-Burn those, like, "ADHD just tones" audios onto a CD so that I can use it to focus when I don't have my phone

-Burn other goofy stuff onto a CD, like Will Roland singing "Teenage Dirtbag"

But yeah, Im doing this because Im frequently overwhelmed, having ADHD, Anxiety, Depression, and an HSP, and music and stimulation really calms me down. But unfortunately, having my intense parents and being at a small school that is run predominately by very strict and neurotypical people, my disorders aren't met with much understanding. So I am accomodating to myself in the best ways that I can. Just because many authority figures around me are not accomodating to my needs, doesn't mean I'm not worthy of those needs. My school has been making things difficult for me as a neurodivergent and mentally Ill student but, since I'm halfway through senior year, it'd be hard to transfer (not like my parents would let me, anyway) so I am working to fight for myself to the best of my ability and just hold on till' I'm in college and can drive and will have more independence.

Anyway, I'm gonna try to post more about mental health stuff cuz it's just good to be more honest and real about things and I hope that maybe I can be there for others that are facing challenges like mine.

I am taking one creative writing class in college and when I talked to the professor about how I can almost never pick up on symbolism or read glances in movies (autism), and asked for help to understand movie structure, the professor asked me if/why I was interested in creative writing in an extremely skeptical tone of voice.

And when I responded something like "...yeah I just usually write stuff to be read not watched" she was like "Wait...fiction? Not nonfiction? You want to write fiction?" like I had just told her the cure for cancer is french fries.

She asked me so many times it did honestly make me feel a little like shit.

Yes, I am on the spectrum. Yes, I enjoy writing fiction. Conversations are easier when you control both sides, you have infinite time to analyze each person involved, and no one actually gets hurt if your first draft of words is incorrect. Ironically the amount of time I've had to spend analyzing why people might act the way they do and drafting every style of Talking for a Situation may lend itself to creative writing. My fucking mistake I guess for taking a class about writing though, because apparently unless you can read "Meaningful Glance #47" in any given movie perfectly, you're a lost cause.

Anyway, now I return to my room to fume at write stuff (fanfic).

I was watching the newest episode with my friends to see if the episode would make up for the terrible writing and actually fucking develop her female characters until Viv literally made a ""joke"" about low functioning autistic people with that one new character in the sloth ring... Me and my friends had a sour taste in our mouths! I honestly thought Viv would've known better than to write shit like this this AFTER THE ACKNOWLEDGEMENT of the fans pointing out her bigotry time and time again! seeing viv and her writing staff come up with shit like that makes me believe Vivziepop definitely hates people who are autistic or neurodivergent and that's why she ALMOST used the r word! Also yes, ableism and any other bigotry is never ok even if the writers (not the fictional characters, this isn't about them, they dont exist!) try to frame the scene as "CUTE AND FUNNY!", comedy does not make bigotry exist in a vacuum. It's nasty no matter how much someone tries to show it as "CUTE!", and the episode being that ableist as you're saying (havent watched much of it, but from what ive heard it's just as bad.) is not ok in the slightest. Vivziepop and Adam (and Brandon!) arent "clever" or "fighting against the haters! >:)" for this. They are losing respect, they are losing money, they are losing viewers, they are losing dignity. They gain nothing from this long term, yes, people who are like them love them, but keeping up with this behavior will screw them over if this doesnt stop happening. This is just how life works.

It's literally a "talk shit and see what happens" situation.

Vivziepop's just messing up her own dream, and it's sad to watch.
