growing up is reconvincing yourself that fairies, vampires, and dragons are/were actually real and that everybody who told you they weren't is just boring and lacks whimsy

Throwing a temper tantrum because it makes sense for cellphone equivalents to exist in sci-fi but I hate them.

#the real problem is that the hypothetical science in my story means they developed ftl communication /prior/ to ftl travel #so it makes absolutely no sense that communication wouldn’t be incredibly easy and fast and prevalent #but also. lame. boring. sucks. I don’t WANT everyone to be connected I WANT it to be like landlines.#I read some novel where the author did a Pony Express thing where you had data packets that had to be actually transported through space #that was really cool #but again. doesn’t work with my hypothetical science.#anyway my current fix is ‘yes there are cellphones but all of my characters are Luddites’

today in insane anti-intellectualism: I just saw a post about how aspiring healthcare practitioners shouldn't take classes in biology and chemistry because those subjects are useless and bad. ????

#the op was like “they should have to study literature and the human condition like ME”#and it's like. hmmmm. I can understand where you're coming from here buddy but maybe think for a hot second #about why aspiring doctors have to take biology 101 before they can jump right into microbial genetics and viral pathogenesis or whatever #like. these classes build on each other. you absolutely need a basic understanding of college-level bio and chem before you can do anything #as someone who is very passionate about both science and writing #(I am getting a degree in microbiology and medical HUMANITIES. because I LIKE HUMANITIES)#I hate the rhetoric that certain STEM subjects are lame boring loser classes for closed-minded idiots who can't see the beauty in the world #there is so much beauty in biology and chemistry and physics! the universe is so big and weird and fascinating #but you'll never see that if you have the mentality that YOUR favorite subjects are the Only Ones That Matter Ever #for the record (as someone who's taken a lot of STEM and humanities classes recently) both STEM and humanities majors do this #and it's obnoxious no matter where it's coming from

look, i know that i AM earning a real degree here and everything, but also the amount of discussion posts i do whose prompts are just “go to this website to learn a fact. restate the fact you learned. does that SURPRISE you????”

#SO tired of pretending to be surprised and/or justifying myself for not being surprised #NONE OF THIS IS SURPRISING #i may not know everything about the world but i was also not born under a rock - PLEASE ask me something more interesting #have to write three discussion posts today and they’re all VERY easy which is good #but they’re SO easy that they’re boring to me so it’s hard to make myself do it #honestly cannot WAIT until i’m done… these classes are so boring #i think i’d be having more fun if i were an arts major of some kind #but being an online science major is just lame #all the fun stuff is in-person only #i do think that the higher level courses will be more engaging #but i’m still fighting my way through the 200 levels right now #so we shall see

i havent been to the library in foreveeeerrrr (less than a month) im dying.... dyyyyiiiinnng.... neeeeedddd boooooookkkkkkssss.... (lives in a house thay contains more books than any other house on earth)

#admittedly most of the books in my house are lame #i need books about monsters ghosts curses trees bugs birds animals plants myths science comics and other similarly nerdy tomes #our house is mostly full of history (bleh) and theology (double bleh)#i wouldnt even complain about the religious stuff if it was more diverse than like 17 different books on the exact same topic about jesus #by mr. conservative cishet white dude number 327 #even the history books would be good if it wasnt just #rich landowning white guy did thing (a 399 book-long series)#bleh #anyway i might replace my birding walk with a library walk tomorrow #three pigeons in a trench coat
