The Truth About Keeping Secrets

Wow. Honestly, this was one of the best books I have read in a while. I found it while looking for Maze Runner at Barnes and Nobles this weekend, and I finished it in less than 24 hours. It’s impossible to put down. Overall, every part of it was incredible, but I think what really made it different from most books of it’s kind is how even though it’s technically and LGBTQ book, that story line wasn’t the main focus. As a gay woman, I’ve seen way too many examples of LGBTQ novels and movies giving the audience nothing but a fantasy version of what they believe an LGBTQ relationship to look like, with a whole lot of homophobia sprinkled in. In this book, I didn’t even know the main character was gay until, what? Chapter 5? I mean, in the real world, we get patronized for ‘making our sexuality our only personality trait’. For that reason, I think this author took into account the real struggles members of this community face everyday, instead of creating a false narrative like the rest of the industry. I hope to see more books similar to this one, as there is much work to do to allow the LGBTQ community to become not-discriminated against. If you have access, this is definitely worth the read.
