2. Mom’s Quirks

       When I was a kid growing up, I certainly did have an amazing childhood. My mom is amazing, she is probably the best mom in the entire universe. Although it is not until when I was 10 years old I started to realize that my family is a little different than everyone else’s family. My family is fairly small, is it just me and my mother. It’s probably the smallest form of family you can get. I didn’t even know why other classmates would have such a family member of a man figure called “father” in their family. I just thought they are funny people sent down by the angels in heaven to entertain mothers and make people laugh. Linguistically, I just thought the word “dad” is just referring to a grown-up man and “mom” as a grown-up woman. The funny thing is before I know what those words really mean, I would sometimes call my teachers mom or dad. They would never correct me! I guess they just find it adorable because they would chuckle every time I say that. My mother is very lovely, however, she is always a little bit on the weird side of things. Every year during my birthday she would always make trayful of gingerbread cookies and bring to share with my classmates. She would give everyone a nicely decorated handwritten card to thank them for being my friend. It was weird for me because I am not even the popular kid in class, I only have a few friends but I was known to be the cheerful type. I don’t think she notices that embarrasses me a lot, but one thing I know for sure is her genuine love for me.

       Upon entering our house, everyone can clearly tell what I mean. She loves shopping at IKEA, but I always notice that she rarely buy house decorations. The walls from the kitchen room, living room, and even the bathroom you will see all of my entire life’s artwork plastered from top to bottom or framed. I got to the point where I would just throw my artwork away before I come home because I don’t want her to fossilize the house with my artworks. When I entered 10th grade my mom got a new job, so I switched high school and we have to move into a new house. I was really sad when I first heard the news. I thought I would be homesick because I really love our old place because that’s where I spend my childhood growing up. After I got back home from the first day at my new school, I surprisingly did not feel homesick at all. I walked into our new house and see the walls decorated with the same artwork that my mom kept from the old place. Then the following day my mom made gingerbread cookies for my new classmates and again thanked them for nothing. This is when I realize that home is wherever my mom is, along with her unconditional love. Most importantly it’s her quirky personality of random thank you cards and her obsession with my artwork is where it truly hits home.
