Things the Naruto Fandom Don’t Talk About Nearly Enough Part 2: Sasori’s Puppet Body

I’ve already talked a little about this but I’m not ready to shut up about it.

I’m not gonna try explaining the confusing ass science/jutsu/bullshit that would make this remotely possible, but I am gonna mention the sheer amount and density of this redhead’s mental unwellness. I don’t even know where to start.

I guess I’ll start with the fact that it’s implied that Sasori was FIFTEEN when he did this. The idea that he was so young when he had skill to pull something that insane off successfully and he reached the mental breaking point to go through with it is crazy to me. Especially since this wouldn’t be something you’d do on impulse, it would be premeditated.

Building on that, we never get a moment where Sasori just snaps like most of the other antagonists we get a backstory for. Because of that, I’m led to believe that his breakdown was just him sitting in his own worsening mental state until it boiled over. So that leaves the question:

When did this process actually start?

As a (very important) side note, did somebody help Sasori? I’m sure anybody who has gone down the rabbit hole of Sasori’s anatomy has also wondered what in the hell this process would’ve looked like. It couldn’t have been Chiyo’s jutsu to bring a puppet to life. First, Sasori didn’t know that jutsu existed. Second, Sasori’s body has a biological core, he isn’t just possessing a puppet. To maintain that core, did he undergo some sort of surgery??? And if so, wouldn’t that imply that at least one person was there to perform the surgery? Or did Sasori perform the surgery himself without using anesthesia or pain killers? He just stubbornly underwent what was probably a few hours of self-inflicted torture.

Speaking of self-inflicted, the very few people I have seen delve into Sasori changing into his puppet body don’t delve into that fact that this is self-inflicted. Sasori didn’t snap and hurt others (I mean, he did, but that’s not what I’m talking about right now), he snapped hurt himself. I’ve read FMA, I know the silent hell that Alphonse went through living in a non-biological body. And whether he realized the full consequences of transforming his body into a puppet or not at the time, this still seems like a very unnatural/self-harm adjacent thing to do to yourself (at least from my perspective). Especially, again, with how this had to have been premeditated.

So, was it self harm to him? Did he hate himself? Did he hate some part of his body? The entirety of it? Was it out of a fear of death or deterioration like Orochimaru? (If so, how did that impact his relationship with Orochimaru?) Or did he not see it as harmful? Did he think he was fixing himself in some way? Or did he not consider his body a part of the equation at all and it was just a purely practical decision to turn his body into a weapon?

I don’t know which one is worse and I can see any of these aligning with his character.

But why have we not seen Sasori use Komushi's puppet? My theory is that Komushi's death was too sudden, the body too "fresh"...and it eventually decayed and fell apart. And so Sasori started developing new methods to "prepare" a body for his art.

Starting with small animals, like rodents and "lost pets", he experiments with different recipes until he finds one that works reliably, however the process is very slow. And so he basically gradually poisons Sandaime to death, who trusts and cares about him like his own son.

Sasori deserts the village while everyone is preoccupied with Sandaime’s declining health, so no one notices he is gone until it is far too late, and proceeds to raid nearby tribes and other satellite villages, finding victims to perfect his puppetry art and build his arsenal before returning to retrieve his magnum opus. 

The reason there was a whole year between Sandaime's disappearance from the Kazekage mantle and Rasa's ascension to the title, was not because the village was "searching" for him, but bc everyone hoped he would recover. When it became evident that he wouldn't, Rasa became Kazekage.

At this point, Sandaime was incredibly ill and essentially bed-bound. Sasori sneaks back into the village and finds him in his home to collect his ultimate prize. The next day, the bed is empty and the village is in a panic the Sandaime had vanished. No one knows what had happened...until decades later when the events of Shippuden occur.

Deidara, one of the youngest members of the Akatsuki, I would say he's closer to the "teenage romance," so to speak. I see him as the "sweetest," if you will.

Still, I view him as someone who manipulates emotions. He would use the classic "don't you love me anymore?" as his main weapon. He would never lay a hand on you, but he would play with your innocence and kindness towards others, especially towards him.

"Do you want that nice guy to end up dead because of you?... Hmm, that's what I thought."

Gradually, you would see how your interaction with the outside world deteriorated. He hardly let you communicate with other members, always under his watchful eye.

He would hug and kiss you as much as possible, but only if you were obedient to his rules and commands. He tends to give the cold shoulder when you don't obey what he ordered.

His hands on your cheeks, squeezing lightly as your plump lips parted, he looked at you like a small and defenseless being, one who wouldn't harm a fly. He knew he had you under his control. Your teary eyes made him want to hug you tighter, so tight he could crush your ribs, but love was like his art, explosive, isn't it?

He does not have a heart, Sasori does not have that feeling of "love" like Deidara, he only feels obsession towards your body, your delicacy, and your sweet demeanor... the most innocent puppet in his collection.

He would always be by your side, protecting his next work of art, constantly admiring your eternal beauty, his eyes piercing your beautiful waist and hips, your beautiful hair and your bright eyes, but in his gaze, it is cold, only showing greed to have you there, just for him.

"No, I don't like you at all, you seem annoying to me, what I like is your body..."

He would be in your room all night, watching you sleep while he fixes his puppets, watching your chest rise and fall with your breaths, your body relaxed and stretched, he looks at you with desire, undoubtedly you will be part of his next collection.

He never kissed you, never touched your body, he saw you as so fragile, as if you were made of glass, he did not want to harm your perfectly cared for skin, it would be sacrilege for him...

His hands so close and yet so far from your body, with a destructive desire to strangle you and turn you into his next work of art, to him it seemed... exciting, imagining the way you writhed before him, it made him feel in some way, as if he had control of your life, he loved being able to possess you, to do whatever he wanted with you, like a puppet...

In addition to being aggressive as a partner, he is a crazy obsessed with his partner, and always forces you to be behind him, chasing him like a dog in search of some love, because he couldn't even provide that to you.

He always saw you as a fragile doll, that he really wanted to break, stain, just to satisfy his morbid fascination with you, he always wanted to destroy you, sees your tears as the most beautiful and adorable thing, even if they are from the pain he himself caused you.

His eyes always on you, watching every move, if you spoke too much, he would correct you when you got to his room, grabbing you tightly by the wrist, quickly dragging you to his room.

He won't really feel guilty about anything, just pretends to by bringing you some flowers and maybe some chocolate or candy he knows you like, so you feel a little loved, and then he will continue to be the same human trash as always.

A wet cloth on your cheek, he had hit you again for throwing a "tantrum", you were crying, in the darkness of the room, until he opened the door, with the same bouquet of flowers as always, throwing it beside you, as if that would make the bruise on your cheek disappear, he slowly approaches you, and places a hand on your injured part, and leans in to give you a kiss, a kiss that seemed sweet, but in reality, meant nothing to him.

A really tough man, very materialistic, not so jealous, he really doesn't care, what he doesn't want is for you to leave his mental control, he is very materialistic, he loves money, how far would he go for it?

I know it's hard to hear, but he prostitutes you, of course, only with the people he wants, he really has a fetish of seeing you surrounded by other men, it's something that actually increases his sexual desire, seeing you trembling and embarrassed is something he craves.

You really agreed to that "job" because he threatened to leave you if you didn't accept, really a manipulator, playing with your kindness and love for that man.

he watched the steam come out from under the door, while he was counting bills, going back to the raw memories of your tears running down your cheeks, really exciting to be honest, he stopped counting when he felt the water turn off, and saw you coming out of the shower with just a towel covering your intimacy it made him think of the beauty he had in front of him, too bad that beauty was not only defiled by the man…

Coupla Random Akatsuki Headcanons 🤷🏽‍♀️

Many of the Akatsuki members spent so many years camping on the ground or sleeping on floors that beds feel strange and foreign to them. Oftentimes in hotels with beds, a member will wake up in the middle of the night on the floor because at some point in their sleep they got up and moved themselves to a spot more familiar.

Sasori developed a mild case of agoraphobia following the death of his parents. When they passed, the outside world suddenly seemed too big, too bright, too threatening. He preferred to stay indoors as much as he could, reading, and later working on his puppets. When he travels he travels inside Hiroku not so much for protection but because the small, enclosed space puts his mind more at ease.

Along with his eyesight, Itachi has slowly been losing his sense of taste over the years. “You eat with your eyes�� is a very true saying, and because of Itachi’s worsening vision, all food looks (and eventually starts to taste) very bland to him.

Deidara takes a ton of vitamins every day because he dreads getting sick. When he’s ill, his hand-mouths become ill as well, meaning coughing and multiple bodily fluids are coming out of every place imaginable. When he does get sick, he’ll quarantine himself until he’s well again because he doesn’t want the others to see him in such a state.

Kakuzu is a secret lover of romance novels, as is Kisame. One will often buy a book, read it, and then lend it to the other to read so that they can talk it over with each other.

Everyone fights over who gets to go on missions with Kakuzu in late fall/winter. His five hearts make him run very warm, so warm that he doesn’t really need his cloak or anything when traveling. He throws off a great deal of warmth and just standing near him is like standing in front of a crackling fire, which feels very pleasant in cold weather.

Kisame didn’t learn how to swim or breathe underwater until he was nearly 20 years old. All his early life he was embarrassed of his half-shark genetics and refused to do or learn anything that would give him away as being more than human.

Konan is somewhat of a germaphobe. She keeps her distance from the other Akatsuki members and when she does have to have close interactions with anyone, afterwards she’ll sanitize and/or “power shower” herself as soon as she’s able. A large part of this has to do with Nagato; his actual body is very frail and his immune system is extremely weak. She’s constantly worried that she’ll unwittingly bring him something that might end up killing him.

Hidan needs to be reminded to eat, a lot. Especially after he’s through with a prayer ritual. When he does eat he prefers lots of meat; he’s somewhat anemic due to all the blood he’s constantly losing and his body seeks out ways to replace his depleted iron.

Although he doesn’t show it, Deidara actually really likes traveling with Tobi. Deidara thinks it’s nice to be around someone who doesn’t (seem to) take life so seriously, and he likes being the “senior partner”, as opposed to his time with Sasori when Deidara was constantly being given orders and “bossed around”.

In nice weather, Konan and Deidara like to fly together (she with her paper wings, him on his birds). Sometimes they race to see who can go faster, although Konan almost always wins due to being more lightweight.

With the exception of Itachi and Sasori (who doesn’t eat anymore), none of the Akatsuki really knows how to cook. They can make simple things like rice balls or porridge, but that’s about it. A great deal of the Akatsuki’s monthly bills comes from eating at inns or buying easy to eat foods at markets.

Zetsu became sensitive to the others complaining about how he smelled like “compost and corpses”, so to compensate, he started to wear cologne. Too much cologne, in fact. So much that the smell was over-powering and made it harder to be around him than before. After a talk with Obito, Zetsu agreed to stop with the sprays and just start showering more often, a compromise the others were happy to accept.

Deidara is hyper-sensitive to the textures of certain foods, and simply refuses to eat anything that doesn’t “feel” right to him. He also has a quirk where, if he’s having a meal with multiple things on a plate, none of those things can be touching each other in the slightest.

Itachi is pretty lauded as being the group’s resident insomniac, but Kakuzu is just as bad (if not worse) than him. They mostly give each other their own space during the long nights awake, but sometimes they’ll spend a couple of hours together talking or reading or going for a long walk (weather permitting).

Sasori has shown every member in the Akatsuki how to put him together should there ever be a situation when Sasori was too incapacitated to do it himself. The only one he hasn’t shared this information with was Hidan, because Sasori doesn’t trust Hidan to put him back incorrectly.

Hidan has extensively studied/looked into the major religions of the country, because he wanted to be sure that Jashinism was the correct one for him. Many years passed and he never found another set of beliefs that suited him like the way of Jashin did.

Kakuzu: Listen, child, I -- Deidara: I get it, just because you're both old and have a lot in common, you think you're better for each other than him and I are, right? Well you're wrong! We were thinking that perhaps we can lure very specific people to the hideout, and once we get them here, we kill them, I harvest their organs, which are currently going for all-time high prices on the black market, and afterwards he gets their bodies for his collection. Deidara: O-oh? That's -- wait. What do you mean, lure them here? How do you think you'll do that, hm? You and Danna don't exactly give off friendly vibes ... Kakuzu: Ah, see, that's where the benefit of having younger, objectively attractive partners comes in. Just how much DO you love your "Danna"? And how far are you willing to go to "help" him? Deidara: What do you mean? I -- *Hidan comes out of the bathroom, wearing a dress and makeup* Hidan: Oi, old fuck ... is this "sexy" enough for your stupid plan or what?? Deidara: ...

Do you have any headcanons regarding the akatsuki and cuddling?

Pein/Nagato: Uses his bodies to make a giant cuddle pile with his partner in the center. Without his other paths, though, he doesn’t give the best cuddles; his original body is very frail, so his partner may be wary of engaging in cuddles.

Konan: Loves to cuddle but doesn’t express it (you can’t really tell), so her partner just thinks she doesn’t like it. Prefers being the little spoon and having arms wrapped around her because it makes her feel safe.

Deidara: Gets bored quickly so he likes to cuddle while doing something, whether that’s talking his partner’s ear off about his art or watching TV. His partner must keep his attention or he might just fall asleep on them.

Sasori: Not much of a cuddler, but likes to run his hand through his partner’s hair as they lay on his lap (while he is simultaneously working on a puppet).

Itachi: Great cuddler and hug giver. Firm, but not tight. Soft, but not squishy. Gentle, but not weak. He prefers cuddling while in bed and is mostly silent through the whole thing (usually because he’s just content to lay there).

Kisame: Gives the best hugs/cuddles by far. He has very strong arms and is (probably) a lot bigger + taller than his partner so he completely engulfs them. Being the polite gentleman he is, he would keep checking in with his partner and adjust to their preference.

Hidan: Would cuddle all the time and always accepts if his partner wants to or initiates it. Be aware, though, that being covered in blood won’t stop him from cuddling; in fact, he thinks the warmth and slickness of the blood only adds to the experience.

Kakuzu: Stiff, but surprisingly comfortable. He’s not used to giving physical affection (the closest he gets is beating the shit out of Hidan), so his partner would have to bear through those first few seconds of him getting used to the idea.

Obito: Cuddles like this is the last time he’ll be able to do it, so he’s very possessive and reluctant to let his partner go for any reason once he’s wrapped them up in his arms. Warning: may activate his Sharingan in order to capture the memory, which could then result in his partner falling through him and suffering a heart attack.

Zetsu: Doesn’t know how to cuddle. After teaching him, he would be very awkward, uncoordinated, and stiff with it. He’d just wrap his arms around his partner and say “Like this?” then sit there for a few minutes until his partner gets tired of his ineptitude.

⭑ would love to clean the living room, the scene when he chases the chicken while trying to make food imagine that but he’s running around the living room vacuuming

⭑ he would despise having to clean the bathroom it would gross him out

⭑ he would have a bad habit of trying to do everything multiple times to ensure it’s clean. After his first time vacuuming he would walk around staring intensely at the carpet to make sure he didn’t miss a single thing, and then even tho he didn’t miss anything he would still go over it again just in case

⭑ he would be a psychopath and not listen to music while he cleans, however; when he cleans with you he dosnt mind when you put on a calm playlist (he definitely loves classical music) - If you did choose to put on a playlist then after his vacuuming and and ur dusting or organizing he would take ur hand and spin you to face him. He would start to slow dance pulling you in to follow his lead

⭑ after intensely running around the living room and giving the carpet a good stare down, he would make sure ur done as well and help if needed - then you both shower or bathe whichever you prefer - finally you both can relax in bed and watch a movie or simple hold each other as you both drift to sleep
